I worked in the parts department of a Vauxhall dealership in the seventies. The Saturday morning brigade would came in for their weekend service items but they would call it a chevette hunchback, to which I would reply, a lunch pack and they would nod yes. A lot of parts in those days were exchange and people would come in for a windscreen after a stone strike or something. One weekend we put up a sign saying windscreens were now exchange. Some old bloke came in, pondered the sign for a few minutes and walked out moaning to himself. An hour later he came back in with a box of broken glass. He said it took him ages to sweep up the glass from the side of the road. We didn’t have the heart to tell him it was a joke. Another Saturday club regular would come in and we would stand at the counter opening and closing our mouths like fish. Mrs Carp never got the joke.
If you got one of the run out models in 1983 you got a cheap no frills motor than was more fun and reliable than some of its rivals of the day. The 1256 engine was good and reliable if it was maintained. Many of these were driving school and fleet so Derek must have come across a few of these in his 45k doom speech.
My first car was a 'B' reg 4-door saloon, one of the last. Loved it, olivine starfire metallic green. Mono radio with the speaker in the middle of the dash, had the clips on the headlight lenses to stop them falling off.. Fantastic car.
Mine (HB) caught fire on the way home from work in 1989 it took 2 fire engines to put the fire out 💪
Beautifully finished in Orange Tan. I had a HC Viva in this colour, then sold it to buy a Chevette in the same colour.......no one noticed it was a different car.
So much better to drive than the woefully under powered MK2 escort 1100
Love a 'Shove-it'. I had a W reg one about 15 years ago which was immaculate with a genuine 18,000 miles only on it.
The challenge on the saloon is find the fuel filler cap!
It's in fantastic condition then Derek drops the bomb the engine will be toast after 45k miles, that's in just 18k for this - I think he then realised what he'd said and tried to salvage it. What a salesman, love him.
The Vauxhall 1256cc engine isn't that bad. Many say they don't need rebuilding til 100k.
What post war engine needs a rebuild at 45k
@@paulhunter123 Derek obviously meaning the 45k milers that did a secretive extra 100k but we don’t talk about that shhhhh
They still very popular here in south american, myself i drive a 86 one with a 1600 OHC engine
I used to see a few Chevette's in the 90's mostly saloons. Not far from me there is a super rare Bedford Chevanne that's been parked outside someone's house for decades. It's rotten as a pear and surrounded by bushes but the interior is still good.
These always seemed old fashioned to me as a kid
Top man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
My Canadian relatives called it the shove it greetings from Scotland 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
My parents had a white estate in the late 80s. NAP 272W
never very popular in the day but this one is exceptional
Great stuff 👏 👍
Its the one to have coz hes got it as ever im seeing a pattern
Always had 'mayo' in the oil cap...😆
Crankcase breather issues I seem to remember. That in fact came back to haunt the ecotech twin cam engines in the late 90,s ie the petrol vectras.Terrible engines that replaced the great 8 valve ohc lunps of the 80,s.Made no sense.
I ex Vauxhall partsman. Easy to solve the mayo. Four inch ally plate with two holes in the bottom corners which matched the two top bolts holding on the water pump. Bolts out, drill the plate to match the bolt holes, bolt plate in place, problem solved. Rocker cover ran a lot hotter, result no mayo. I remember charging a couple of quid for a patternto make the plate. Coustomers would be over the moon once they had fitted one. Happy days.
Like any other car, if its looked after it will be a "Guddun", I never had any problems with either my HA van, HB and HC saloons or my Chevettes (x2), ran very well and certainly were not "Asmatic" 🧐🧐🧐
I actually prefer the saloons, their isn't many cars that I can say that about. My dad had a red one on rostyles
Takes me back next door neighbours had a light blue 4 door saloon on a A Reg late Registered model
Banged together by scallies in the Port!
The 💺 seats look high mileage
I had a brand new Chevette in the late 1970s it was a pile of junk it came with rust at no extra cost when i first opened the bonnet there was a film of red rust over the wheel arshes.Build quality was dreadful.A box of dead frogs are more desirable than that car.Had it for 3 months only sold it for new Volkswagen Polo which had just been released which was like chalk and cheese compared to the pile of junk that Vauxhall were making.never bought a cheap UK built car ever again.
At least it won't be made into a HSR lookalike.
To think that the 8 valve ohc engines yet to come were so good compared to these asmatic ohv set ups.Mind you Its in bloody good nick.Amazed any are still left.
Pride of Ellesmere Port
@ARI Red Steer and the British Marques were better ?
Prone to "dropped valves".
My folks had one of these. Automatic. Awful car.
Yes they should have made the auto with a 1500 or 1600 cc engines & fitted a Borg Warner box instead of the poor GM Strasbourg box.
worst car we ever had
More a shame it wasn't a HS terrible car one of the most ugliest cars in there time typical retired factory workers car
horrible
And secondly its a vauxhall 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
