The speed at which you demonstrate crafting a sound, and the fact I could keep up while you were doing it, is testimony to great synth design. It’s all good to have depth in a synth engine, but here you have access to it all and have done the task by the time you finish saying what you want to do. Everything seems so accessible.

Rotary = Rotary Speaker, for example a Leslie speaker. A Leslie speaker (cabinet) is an amplified speaker cab where the speaker cone is motorized and spins around in 360deg. The result is both an amplitude modulation (as the speaker moves from pointed at you, to away from you) as well as a subtle pitch shift due to the Doppler effect. They were most commonly used attached to a Hammond organ.
The "lo/hi" (I assume, not used this synth) probably refers to the fact that on a Hammond there's a switch that allows you to adjust the speed of the Leslie speaker's rotation. Players would often use this as an effect -- you can hear it a lot on jazz organ type stuff -- resulting in an acceleration or deceleration of the speaker. For example, you could have it set to High and the speaker is spinning fast (so the rate of the amplitude change is quite fast, and the Doppler effect is more pronounced) and then, whilst playing, switch it to Low and the speaker would slowly decelerate, the amplitude change would be at a slower rate and the Doppler effect would be less pronounced. It's quite a common thing once you know what you're listening for. No idea if the the lo/hi parameter on this machine actually refers to that, but it would make sense!
Anyway, thanks for the vid. Really impressed with the sounds from this lil box.

    • @ianeye68
      @ianeye68 5 лет назад +21

lo/hi could also refer to the fact that there were two different speakers rotating in a Leslie cabinet. one for the high frequencies, and one for the low frequencies. One could spin clockwise, while the other spun counterclockwise, and as you mention, at different rates of speed: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_speaker#/media/File:Lesliebox_Animation.gif

Correction: as far as I know, the speaker itself stays in place and fire the sound up to the cone, that collects the sound into the short tube, and this tube is the axis on wich two horns rotate and radiate the sound to the sides.

    • @uhoh007
      @uhoh007 5 лет назад +5

No cones move, except in the regular way. The sound from the cones is channeled into the "treble horn" on top, and the "bass rotor" on the bottom, which are essentially 3 speed or two speed, and one of those speeds may be "stop". Even at stop there is variation, as the horn may be pointed away. The real magic is the speed change itself, which is why you see Hammond players hit the switch so often. The electronic vibratos, which the Hammond has 6, do not allow a smooth change of speed. Essentially the Leslie was an "acoustic LFO", or mechanical LFO, and obviously the last effect in any chain.

You're correct that the Rotary affects pitch too, it is like a doppler effect. The speaker spins around and as it does the pitch, volume and EQ are modulated. Imagine a speaker facing you, then turn it away, so the volume and EQ/tone will change as the speaker goes off axis, and even you get a bit of phase cancellation to boot! The pitch modulation kicks in more as you speed up the rotation, much like a plane flying by overhead as it approaches the pitch goes up, and as it passes and goes away from you the pitch goes down. This is the same thing with a rotary speaker. Because of the effect there are usually tone knobs for bass and high on really leslies, those are EQ to emphasise or compensate for what is happening psychoacoutically.

Rotary is when they place a speaker in a cabinet and spin it around with a mic inside. It creates a whirring sound or flutter. Commonly used in organs to give it the “wah wahs”. It creates a small Doppler when the mic spins away.

I've been on the fence on whether I should buy a ASM Hydrasynth (the version with the keyboard) or possibly a Sub 37.
Someone for the love of god *PLEASE* help me finally make the choice! If it's helpful, I own an MPC X and use my X
as the brain of my operation. I use the MPC X for sampling, drums/percussion etc. and it's also the sequencer in my
setup. This is exactly why I've been on the market to buy a synth for quite some time. I've been producing music for
20 years now, but up until purchasing the MPC X 4 years ago 99.9% of my experience has been working within a DAW.
I have 20 years experience working within FL Studio. However, the MPC has really got me leaning more into hardware
and that's why I'm on the market for a synth. I want something to pair up with my MPC X that gives me a ton of options
for producing melodies, counter melodies, awesome basslines etc. I think the Hydrasynth would probably be better for
what I'm looking for, but I'm not 100% sure because I've seen plenty of Sub 37 videos that had me drooling!

    Little info here ;)
    - In Pre/Post FX pages, Slots 3 & 4 refer to Param 1-2 in Mod Dest, so you made the Rotary modulation right.
    - You can actually do both filters by having Filter Controls access one filter while accessing the other filter on Master Control.
    (Besides Macro)
    - The Drive/Morph knob acts as Morph only when it selects Filter 2.

12:40 The rotary is a Leslie speaker effect. In a Leslie the tweeter horn and the woofer cone rotate on the same axis, in opposite directions. A Leslie has a fast and slow setting, with a ramp up and down time, depending on the condition of the motor. The way a Leslie projects sounds into a room is infinitely complex and makes some seriously trippy psychoacoustic effects. The pitch warble you mentioned is one of them. Because the speakers are rotating, there's a constant doppler-effect.
It's mostly used in conjunction with a hammond organ, but it's great on guitar and Fender Rhodes as well. And on synths of course!

Yeah, I was surprised to hear Ricky say that. I still don't have a phone. People have a stunned reaction, "How can you possibly exist without a phone?" I do have a land line, though, but I lived for about ten years without even that. Who ever thought that would be such a thing? to have to have a phone.

I just happened to see this come up on my feed as I was noodling around creating patches on my Knifonium. I stopped and clicked on your presentation. You have a great way of presenting and you make it feel like we are discovering things with you. I totally forgot what I was doing. It’s problematic to know that it is more interesting to watch you virtually explore the possibilities in a synth, than to do it myself.

12:30 When I hear the word Rotary in the context of a sound effect, I think of an amplifier cabinet from last century. I believe it was referred to as a Leslie. This cabinet had rotating speakers in it that would throw the sound out of the cabinet in different directions. is this a digital simulation of that physical amplifier cabinet?

with the envelope delays it seems like you could really do some really rhythmic filter sounds with a quick decay and resonance and some fast sequences, timed to the BPM/milliseconds

    • @paulmapp8306
      @paulmapp8306 4 года назад +3

totally different synths - they will complement each other but arnt really comparable. They do different things, in different ways. I have a peak, and will add either a Hydra or Argon.

    • @MilesAwayOfficial

Peak sounds more warm and organic, Hydra sounds more digital (good digital not bad digital)
Both great but totally different sounds!

Ingmar Kappers I did. I got the Hydra and mine was jacked. Super low volume, no bass...I had to have master volume full, all the OSC at full and I was still half the level of my other gear that were at half volume. So now I have a Peak. SOLID. I lost $800 in the end :(

Awesome! Love how you can see the time of the envelopes. That way you can calculate the timing for perfect on the beat attacks and stuff. How many seconds can you go up in the envelopes? Thnx for this vid. It is awesome and definitely put this on the GAS list. Next to the Zoia!

Got my Hydrasynth on the way and considering pairing it with a Euroburo for enhanced CV modulation/sequencing and better effects.. I think my OT MK2 is the only thing that can handle such a hot signal though, so I need to find a cheap solution to ensure it’s safe to go into my PC interface. (I’m new to modular gear)

  • @johnpenguin9188

That wave shape modulation looks a lot like what Waverazor was trying to do.
But this synth seems a lot simpler to manage

How do you get at the missing knobs(parameters) on the desktop...
LFO, ENV knobs and the Arps tempo, ratchet, chance, gate.
And...do you think you miss having those on the desktop, as well as the ribbon, keys, chord/glide and wheels
    Thanks

A little tbh. It definitely felt a little bit more divey with this one, but it’s barely a few pages deep, and once you get used to it, as is with most things, it’s not that bad

Love the video. Great demo and great channel! I have the module version preordered myself and I can’t wait. Even more so now. Question: is there a way to set the grid layout to a chromatic keyboard similar to the Digitone/Takt and play it that way?

    • @RickyTinez

    • @mitsanut5869

I share your opinion. Just to expand on it, I would say that most demonstrations concentrate on how unfriendly and distorted the sound can be made instead of how cool and warm can it generate.
Almost every vid I come across never shows the power of harmonics and colors of sounds that are choreographed into some comprehensive melody.
How many of these sounds are you gonna use in your track, actually, unless you are J. Michell Jarre?
Pads instead of keyboard (I know it has a keyboard version)...
The more I see new demostrations of new synths, the less of an actual playing I see.
Show me you can actually be a musician - not a laboratory rat technician.
Compose some music with it that makes some sense.
I am really growing weary of these demonstrations
