Just spent the last 11.03 minutes nodding uncontrollably. The man is an absolute professor of life, in addition to his multitude of musical talents. What a lucky band of followers we are.
This should have hundreds of thousands of views ... the fact that it only has 26k a year after release is a painful reflection on humanity. Come on people! :D
This album comes along at a pivotal time in my life, having just turned 50, and the diagnosis of my mother having colon cancer the day before its release. I have essentially listened to this non stop and again it is so MEANINGFUL, impactful, and will no doubt help many through this beautiful, dark and scary world we live and all of its emotions. Thank you! I hope to see you live someday.
I fucking adore listening to this man talk about his music and his art. He puts SO MUCH thought and soul and heart into his music. And you can feel it so hard. Like the song WHY? on Empath. It's basically a damned musical. But it's epic as shit. And I love that Devin can make me, as a preferred metalhead, find so much joy and happiness in a song like that. I love everything this man does. I can't wait to see his acoustic show in May. So pumped to see him live for the first time. 🤟🏻😁🖤
So we rise Receive the pain, but this isn’t where this ends Don’t you forget that you are perfect Don’t you forget just who we are We’re strong enough!!!!
Since I was a child I am in love with music, and the more time passes the more difficult it is to find quality music. I thought that regarding progressive rock Dream Theater was difficult to overcome, technically and compositionally speaking, but thanks to this man his compositions one hopes that there will always be wonderful music. The piece "Singularity" is a masterpiece. Thanks Devin, thanks the Dream Theather, the Pink Floyd etc etc ... Thanks for shining for all of us.
I am obsessed with this album, especially Evermore. That song is so different and caught my ear right away (just like all the others.) It is just so different. This album literally has so many different homes intwined to every song and it is mesmerizing. Devin, please never stop making music. Your talent and obsession to detail, stressful as I know it is, made this album so worth it and it is a masterpiece.
God I love this man! I wish he could be my friend, I know that we could have sooooo great talks! His way to think is so close to mine, love Devin, yesterday, now and foreverer ! Greetings from Finland man! 💞
Hi Devin my name is Steven from Australia I love all your music you have a beautiful Creative Mind Love what you do in your music I would love to see your music hopefully in the top 10 charts and win awards because you deserve it I don't know if you think this is your best album that you have created but I think it is your music is so spiritual and uplifting the kids of today and need to hear your music but typically the kids are going in the dark place like some adults I'm just wondering are you already thinking of another album to create and god bless you you Devin Townsend and your family keep creating beautiful music and we all love you Devin for your music and your family 🤘😘😍🙏👏
The level that Devin writes and thinks at is just amazing! I haven't bought the album yet but I'm going to and hope to get it tomorrow. From what I've heard so far, it will be off the scale great! As his usual level of quality is. I'm almost 64. Don't quite know why I'm saying this but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that as I age, I'm finding more and more that I need music that is pushing the boundaries and I find this in Devin's music. It pushes boundaries and makes you think. Not only that though. It has a beauty that surpasses so much other music that is out there. It's not pop. It's not rock. It's in a class all of it's own. Somebody else said He's created a genre unto himself, called "Devin". And I concur!
im about the same age as Devin. A lot of what he says and this album , connects in the same ways, echoes some of mine and probably many mens middle age period. thank you for this album , and to share this insight. your sharing this with us, but we can share, that your not alone in your thinking. you echo all of us. its your creativity in turning that into musical form that separates you and makes your individuality. forever metal devin pal.
Rarely do I listen to an album and get chills every minute and this also made me cry which I rarely do, Thank you Devy your music gets me through the worse things in life.
This album is amazing from start to finish, since it came out I've listened every day and I already ordered a limited edition copy, please keep making amazing music Mr. Townsend
I love when Devy does this on each album. Always look forward to hearing his thoughts over the years. Love You Devy..."Gotta Pee" Over the Beastie Boys. Now let's sell out Radio City Music Hall or Carnegie...
Even if you don't see yourself as enlightened, you definitely help enlighten others - just like you say, it's not all about positivity and cheering others up, but your words and musical works without a doubt help channel thoughts and feelings, of both dark and light places, of aspects of one's mind and of the world, the universe. It may sound like hyperbole, but I do firmly believe that music has a way of helping many understand themselves and their thoughts and feelings, and I also believe that I am not alone in feeling more calm and collected (headbanging will count as the latter ^^) when listening to your works, all the while they're also provoking thought and an urge to understand the self and the environment. Sometimes it's abstract but tangible, like feeling an urge to headbang to a heavy song, other times it's more sublime and thought-provoking. Rambling aside - your works help others deal with their lives, and I hope you feel equally content in channeling your life and thoughts through your works, it means a lot to many. :)
5:31 - 5:58 wow Devy, speaking some solid truth there. Im still hung up on some things in my past, and how cruel the world can be, but analysing those negative factors accepting them for what they are and channelling it into something positive and releasing from the pain it caused is amazing, the way you said it hit me hard and I replayed it a few times
When I noticed that Empath is mixed quieter and definitely exhibits stunning dynamics, I could not believe at first. Then read a thread on reddit on that. This is just awesome! I recall some experiments even with crescendo/diminuendo (first Ziltoid, if not wrong), so why would I get surprised? Thanks a lot, Devin!
No homo, i love ya devin. This album is sublime! I've been going through some tough times here and your album is giving me a clarity to get through. I've been posting everywhere for people to purchase and support this album. Best wishes...
For RUclips you want a few days between uploads to not take away from your own reach and views. It's a weird thing with the algorithm. Be patient, it'll come :)
The track "Why?" is what I crave in your music. Your clean vocals at reaching full scale with epic progression. Any time you don't sing like this I feel like you're hiding/limiting your unique talents. :) This track makes the album for me.
I felt that one is a direct response to Hear Me. The juxtaposition of them really makes Why? shine. I hear it as Dev/the main character, speaking to his wife/SO, after the face melting in the song before. Hear Me is about accepting and listening to the beast within. Then after its exposure - He's saying "why run away?" and the choir is all "I want to go home"
a masterpiece folks - owning this album - will give you a huge return on investment - this album is literally like being in the afterglow of great sex - the wall of sounds, the ambient, the hard /soft formulas, the musical journeys - I love this album so much and I highly recomend you listen to: Why? Spirits will Collide, Genesis (youtube if you can't find it) ***THEN*** go out and buy it and you will find that the rest of the album is very strong as well and it is the only thing you will want to listen to for the next 2 weeks --not kidding - Devin I think by allowing yourself to be vulnerable like this you have given us the best version of yourself
I really like the song "Hear Me". Sounds like a mix of SYL, Deconstruction and Physicist... I'd love to hear more songs like that, compiled on a record with another band name lets say strapping young lad
I'd like to hear this opinion more often, compiled on a record called "People Who Won't Stop Whining About SYL That Can't Grasp That It's Done Forever".

Luke Neufeld angry no. Disappointed? Depends on the movie. If it’s a movie that’s not metaphorical or very deep I don’t care and welcome to be open to the process. Luke Neufeld others may like to be lazy and be spoon fed information but that’s the precise problem with commercial art these days. People want art to be readily accessible. They don’t wanna think for themselves. I wish Devin took a page outta david Lynch’s book and made his audience figure out his works on their own. The fact that their is college courses out there attempting to educate people on the understanding of art just reinforces my opinion. Stop spoon-feeding people your art so they buy it.
My introduction to Devin Townsend was transcendence...what a a god dam great album. Strong, powerful, emotive and uplifting at times.
'Spirits Will Collide' might be the most important song that's ever entered my life. I've kept relistening to that and 'Why?' for a week.
Quoting "Princess Bride" is one more reason why this dude is one of my favorite musician.
"Where does one find hope?"
In your music, of course.
that was beautiful

My family is sick and tired of hearing me talk about how brilliant Devin is and this album is the reason for that
Devin Townsend is a very talented, creative, intelligent, and interesting individual. I happy to have him on the planet.

When you said (paraphrasing) seeking the immortality of a work is just another way of holding onto it, I took that to heart quite deeply.
Empath is Devin's 9th Symphony.
Unlike Beethoven or Mahler though, Devin has much more to come :-)

Let's be real here, the true soul of the entire album is condensed into Middle Aged Man!
I was slowest to appreciate that of all the songs on the album. But I got there! And it's great!
I have to have at least a dozen runs so far and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon!
😂😂😂
Empath is a masterpiece, the music, the concept, musicians, production, even the artwork is beautiful! Thx Dev!

Enlightenment involves being conscious about the shadows one's light cast.
So yeah, I would say Devin is enlightened, in a way :)
Truth. Enlightenment isn't about 'being at peace' or any of those kinds of concepts. It's simply awareness, 'good and bad.'
Thank you for your honesty, Dev. It's good to know that no one knows exactly where their life is going, or what will happen next.
