Surprised you didn’t like the libertines’ older stuff, up the bracket is a masterpiece - the new album is great too though and Pete and Carl have always been huge romantics

I think, there are too many people out there, who kind of avoid the Libertines, only because of their lifestyle. Not listening to to their music, because of their punchable faces is just ignorance. Peter Doherty is in my opinion one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years.

I was put off by Pete's drug addiction stuff in the 2000s, felt like he was more about the junk than the music, glad he's got his shit together now 🤘

@@NickCinoMusicfrom their first album onwards, their music has been filled with romantic poetry. Not to mention all the romantic ballads Pete wrote either solo or with Babyshambles

New subscriber here. What did you think of Babyshambles?
Not my proudest moment, and i have never repeated it. But i was in HMP Wandsworth with Pete Doherty. I'd not heard of the Libertines and it was my first (and only) time in prison. I was in reception getting my stuff taken off me, prison uniform issued etc. This bloke sitting next to me taps me on the shoulder and says "you know you can get a smokers pack from them" (a smokers pack had a small pouch of tobacco, HMP branded lighter and HMP branded rizlas). Said thanks and asked for my smokers pack. On the way to the wing with another new comer, he says to me, "d'you know who that was you were talking to?" Obviously i didn't so he tells me, "that was Pete Doherty".....fast forward a year into my sentence and i got into the Libertines. So yeah, I've met Pete, but didnt have a clue who he was 😂

I dont know a ton of Babyshambles but "Fuck Forever" is a good track! Very cool that you met Pete! 🤘

@@NickCinoMusic Killamangiro is another belter too. Their first album is a bit up and down, second one (shotters nation) is brilliant same with the third (sequel to the prequel) isn't bad either. Didn't really rate Carl Barats post Libertines band, dirty pretty things (though 'bang bang your dead' is a wicked tune, said to be a Fk you to Pete) but Doherty did much better with Babyshambles.
If you like this Libertines album you'll like Babyshambles. I do recommend going back to the first two Libertines albums again. Up the Bracket is quite raw and gritty, their second album, after the success of the first is a bit more polished.

I can tell you've paid no attention to them at all, because one of the MAIN draws of The Libertines is the romance and the poetry. The chemistry between Carl and Peter with their shared worldviews, and love of theatre of the mind, and nostalgia for the past married with knowledge that the past is a bloody and painful place...it's all in there, and it carries through into their solo work. They both leave coded messages to one another in their solo songs. There is a deep lore of personal history in their discographies, and it's always interesting to find new connections between songs published sometimes decades apart, as well as obscure literary and film references. And that's no even bringing up John and Gary, who have always been very solid performers in their own rights.
I hate hate HATE that people reduce them to Peter's tabloid appearances and substance issues, and act as if they were somehow chosen to be famous by the NME at random, without having some serious talent behind them.

Yeah only 4th album because despite being around for 20 years, they’ve been apart for more years than together. Pete has done solo and the band Babyshambles, Carl did his things too
They’re not that big in the UK. Not a household name
like Oasis for example. People might recognise a couple of songs but are more famous because of Pete’s antics than their music
Great band though, I always love their lyrics

There wasn't only Pete and Carl singing, there was also John and Gary in Man With The Melody. It's down to the production that you couldn't easily recognise where Pete and where Carl sing, this is something I don't like about the production.
Peter is a massive Smiths fan, so the inspiration and influence would make sense.
Merry is a perfectly English word to say in this context, there isn't a fixed phrase for this. The word isn't used in the literal meaning the way you used it, you'd say things like that metaphorically in the UK. And especially for the Libertines the word merry implies nostalgia and melancholy rather than pure and simple joy.
I like the fact that you like the songs written by Carl (they were supposed to be on a solo record initially) because people in the UK have a tendency to slag off everything Carl does and glorify everything that Pete does which I think is a pretty crappy attitude.
I can't agree that Oasis were obnoxious in an "endearing" way. They were just obnoxious and still are, especially Liam. But I really like their music.
Oh dear, the Libertines is a synonym for romantic, I don't know how that could go unnoticed... The drugs are actually something that overshadows their work and it really shouldn't.
    Peter sings Baron's Claw.

I am the biggest fan of all their previous albums. I saw Babyshambles 9 times and think Pete is the lyricist of our generation, BUT I hated this album, it's like an album mimicking The Libertines. To me it sounds boring and dated. Go listen to Pete's solo stuff and you will hear more musical variety. Very disappointing.
