The Beatles version of this is my favourite song of ever. But I really REALLY love this as well! Both bands will live on forever whether the Libertines re-unite or not.
sure, carl was the main voice etc but they were together the heart of the band! they are the two best and most brilliant songwriters and indie musicans on earth! pete finds his own way in this crazy world miss u libs, and thanx for the music!
i love the beatles but there aint nothing wrong with this cover, i mean you aint gonna sing it like lennon are ya? Thats why he is john lennon, if everyone had his unique talent then everyone would be doing it. It aint easy to take on a beatles tune and i think they done it well and still sounded like the libs...one of the best songwriting teams of the noughties btw.
No, actually, it's more than sweet - the vocal bit in the middle done by Carl ... it just makes it... this is one fine cover. Thanks again so much for putting this up hun.
Words escape me...more friendship vocally than John and Paul......peter sings like he means every 1....and Carlos pulls off the almost theatrical delivery.......love it.....always will
@paulgad Hi! HUGE FAN here in Maryland, USA!!! I have noticed more and more posts from folks in the US. How we missed out on the LIBERTINES in the beginning is beyond me. My excuse - I had a hubby in the hospital the first few years during the first rise and fall of the LIBS. But once I found them.... I've been addicted to everything they've done... and how about that REUNION! ? WOO HOOO!!!
this is a fantastic version, and brave to take on a beatles clssic, i think they have dun a good job. pete doherty is just as talented as anyone who is currently or has ever been in the rock an roll world, u can put him down for his behaviour but not the talent, song writing genius and very inspiring
this song was part of the celebration of the album the song was from (which i think is st pepper...) They got loads of diferent bands to record songs from the album using the studio and same equipment as the beatles used at the time, so its supposed to sound the same
i love covers in general for few reasons... first, sometimes people hear the song for the 1st time and discover the original; if it is a good cover (like this one) its a great tribute to the band; and if it bad, u can laugh!!!
You're right. But from the start it was always about Pete and Carl. They even signed a media contract which said it would be Pete and Carl in the spotlight.
old video i know.. but ive come bk for another listen to some old stuff, missing the libs! and been reading the comments and yes, his 'lifestyle' aside, pete is amazing! but no one seems to mention or appreciate Carl.. (tho i havent been through all comments) and how amazing he is, he is sooo underated..his guitar playing and his vocals are epic.. his solo album is brilliant imo as well.. ahh long live the libs music, we can hope for another reunion if pete can pull his shit together i guess!
The Libs (and specially Pete) became very popular here in Italy thank to the face that he was engaged to Kate Moss. Unless most of the people wouldn't hav known of them..
@WillDrache They both sing lennon's part. Barat starts the song I thing, then Doherty begins the "he blew his mind out" part, then Barat again. The part "wake up ..." is Barat's. And then Doherty closes the song. That is what I am hearing though...
If i'm honest I expected this to be crap... no one touches the beatles in my opinion.... But this is really good, it's different and has its own slant, but still manages to capture the good stuff from the first song. I like it big thumbs up... Oh and the Libs... and BabyS are Fuckin great...
@ROPERBOYUK I'm American and I know the Libertines well...they were quite popular with a group of "hipster" kids at my high school back in like 2003 but outside that they are way underrated in the states.
@goodtaxidriver It's your way of seeing things and not a truth. The Libertines, okay haven't many technical, but they have this deconstructed thing, their personality, which gives a soul to the group. The fact that they have built this group from scratch, when they were in misery... Not for nothing thet they have been so successful, and that we're always talking about them today. Pete and Carl are also excellent songwritter. ;)
@harryspoonpotter yes, i'm aware of this. I believe pete has good range particularly, and to my judgement they both sing in tune as well. i actually agree with your comment mostly though.
@paulgad Another American here, and you're right; there are definitely not enough people in the US who know about Doherty (and many other bands for that matter). Hopefully they'll catch on eventually...
@paulgad Thats sooooooooo true i found out who they were randomly sometime in high school and ever since then ive met only one other person that knew who they were ....ive become such a huge fan of them....even of carl barat's not so successful band....i do wish and hope they get back together...would love to seem them together again. I try my best to get my friends to listen to them
its funny I was just thinking that they have the same thing that I like about some Beatles songs where they are the most cheerful tunes but the lyrics are actually dealing with rather dark themes. Always loved that about some of the Beatles songs and same w/ Libs
@kmylo4 I play in several bands and in those bands I have a beatles cover band. We play in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Italia and in september, we go to China and Japan.
they were asked to do it to comemorate the album. loads of other bands did other songs an i think they released it as a album cover by various artists. dont think of it as a cover , more of a tribute.
yer, i agree , i dont think people should do covers like this . but as i said the producer of the orginal album asked various artists to do a cover of the 40th aniversary an i think the idea was to use the same equipment as the beatles did and try and do it exactly the same, hence it sounds the same...like all the other artists versions ... i dont think they were even allowed to put thier own slant on it. as i said its not really a cover , more or a tribute to the beatles.
first i wanna say that I LOVE your video...great work...I love the cover they did...do you know where one can get the cd with all the sgt.peppers lonely hearts club band covers? I've been looking for it since I saw a documentary on BBC once, but was unable to find it so far...
i don't mean the libertines specifically, i mean in that industry, even the people who don't do it are still 'in it' as it were. the boys at razorlight don't grass johnny be goode up when he rakes in a line as long as leicester square
If you don't like them fair enough lol. Even if the critics say they're the best band ever, musical taste is all down to what does it for you. It's not ignorance if a supposedly great band doesn't do it for you. Anyway nice cover, great song!
@paulgad really...? then who am i? but i do know what you are saying. I'm a huge fan, turned out a girl at my high school was a big fan as well though- had it in her music favorites on facebook!
lol u said u saw a picture in your post below of liam that says I wanna be lennon, and that it was from the new tour, unless u typed it wrong, or i'm misreading it.
This was easily the best of the Pepper anniversary covers, when it was probably the easiest song to mess up. Good job Libs Still not a patch on the original though.
WOW! I Just heard of these guys for the first time today (1-9-9). Its 3am and I'm still up, looking fro more of their songs.
Brings tears to my eyes! Come back boys, everyone misses you
The Beatles version of this is my favourite song of ever. But I really REALLY love this as well! Both bands will live on forever whether the Libertines re-unite or not.
♥
People! Each band is unique in its own way, please stop comparing them!
This was pretty awsome. But I was expecting libertines version of it. Seems more like they're trying to do an exact cover.
This is amazing, very hard to do The Beatles justice but this cover definitely does.
Really love these old songs, just the best..!
sure, carl was the main voice etc but they were together the heart of the band!
they are the two best and most brilliant songwriters and indie musicans on earth!
pete finds his own way in this crazy world
miss u libs, and thanx for the music!
Beautiful cover....I was trying to imagine that this was an original by Carl and Pete and I was hearing it for the first time, I'd be blown away.

Really great tribute! The Beatles will live forever ...

i love the beatles but there aint nothing wrong with this cover, i mean you aint gonna sing it like lennon are ya? Thats why he is john lennon, if everyone had his unique talent then everyone would be doing it. It aint easy to take on a beatles tune and i think they done it well and still sounded like the libs...one of the best songwriting teams of the noughties btw.
I agree. I see we both have something in common. We both love the Beatles.
Definitely the best songwriting teams of the 00s. Paul Mcartney and Pete Doherty interviewed each other in the Observer on Sunday.

What a class. Love it 😻😻
This shows perfectly how good peter and carl are its a hard thing too cover a already perfect song but they have amazingly
...it's really good for a cover...I didn't even know they covered it and I didn't expect such an amazingly good result, either...good job!
i think it sounds beautiful
and at 2:41 is where it makes my heart melt
i LOVE carl's voice
Salute!!! they are the new generation of john and paul..
Yes, always and everywhere.
i'm a beatles fan,and this cover is just awesome!!!the bass line is exactly the same!
Well, it doesn't compare to the original, but if I'd heard this version first, I'd still be in love with it. This is great!
My god, you really LOVE Pete Doherthy. That's dedication...
Biggles has it all in this sincere effort...even though im a Doherty fanatic....the good ship A !!
Wow !
This is really good !
this is a fantastic version, and brave to take on a beatles clssic, i think they have dun a good job. pete doherty is just as talented as anyone who is currently or has ever been in the rock an roll world, u can put him down for his behaviour but not the talent, song writing genius and very inspiring
Actually sounds incredibly close, great job!
this is definatly the best of the 40th aniversary covers
this song was part of the celebration of the album the song was from (which i think is st pepper...) They got loads of diferent bands to record songs from the album using the studio and same equipment as the beatles used at the time, so its supposed to sound the same
Haha, cute pics of carl and pete :)
oh this is so lovley!
Nobody can do this cover beter than the libertines!!!!!!!
I think they did this song incredible justice
i love covers in general for few reasons... first, sometimes people hear the song for the 1st time and discover the original; if it is a good cover (like this one) its a great tribute to the band; and if it bad, u can laugh!!!
they do this song quite well... in fact, exceptionally well...
@Wisconsin222 good mention friend....Brandon and the K,s diff class, but never forget the generosity of the Libs,,free albums, free gigs and more!
Best cover ever!
You're right. But from the start it was always about Pete and Carl. They even signed a media contract which said it would be Pete and Carl in the spotlight.

i really think they should have good morning instead! pete and carl wudda nailed it, but whatever they do fills me with joy haha
i adore pete's voice
Great cover to the greatest band ever
if anything, the pete's voice is more romantic than the carl's that for me
but in this,
the first 10 seconds fascinated me!!!
@WillDrache

Guys, the great thing about music is that its very subjective, so no one can really say who is the "BEST"
Don't i feel like an idiot, thanx for clearing that up.
I understand that completely and agree, but please tell me where u saw a picture of the new from the new tour that hasn't even started yet.
i like the way you put that
@LIBERTINEPARANOIC i agree, british rock is simply brilliant
Mi Banda Fav Solo despues de The Beatles ❤
@goodtaxidriver It's your way of seeing things and not a truth. yes it tis! sgt peppers covers on bbc radio 1
Is it carl singing Pauls bit he is very good !
@harryspoonpotter yes, i'm aware of this. I believe pete has good range particularly, and to my judgement they both sing in tune as well. i actually agree with your comment mostly though.
great cover!
shivers
Ahh, sweet! Thanks so much for sharing this! Carlos singin the I'd love to turn you on line turns me on no end... haha ... I
@paulgad Another American here, and you're right; there are definitely not enough people in the US who know about Doherty (and many other bands for that matter). Hopefully they'll catch on eventually...

The whole point is that it is an anniversary tribute and it's supposed to stick close to the original
@kmylo4 I play in several bands and in those bands I have a beatles cover band. We play in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Italia and in september, we go to China and Japan.

awsome..!
Yeah so after listening to it again, i can fully recognise him.
first i wanna say that I LOVE your video...great work...I love the cover they did...do you know where one can get the cd with all the sgt.peppers lonely hearts club band covers? I've been looking for it since I saw a documentary on BBC once, but was unable to find it so far...
Pete for ever.
great cover
The Libertines have often, controversially, been compared to The Beatles. I mean, they are good, but they're no Libertines.
All back again full circle.
i don't mean the libertines specifically, i mean in that industry, even the people who don't do it are still 'in it' as it were. the boys at razorlight don't grass johnny be goode up when he rakes in a line as long as leicester square
I just had a feeling, that pete would do lennons part. It felt right. I knew it before even listening
If you don't like them fair enough lol. Even if the critics say they're the best band ever, musical taste is all down to what does it for you. It's not ignorance if a supposedly great band doesn't do it for you. Anyway nice cover, great song!
they're some singers! and carl sounds v.v.v.good n pete sounds like....well, Pete :]
Gran cover....
@paulgad really...? then who am i? but i do know what you are saying. I'm a huge fan, turned out a girl at my high school was a big fan as well though- had it in her music favorites on facebook!
lol good shout..... still like this one...
Carl Barât 💙
its mostly carl...
lol u said u saw a picture in your post below of liam that says I wanna be lennon, and that it was from the new tour, unless u typed it wrong, or i'm misreading it.
Love the shout after "English army had just won the war"
I don't think anything can beat the original (obviously) but this version is pretty fucken sweet.
This was easily the best of the Pepper anniversary covers, when it was probably the easiest song to mess up. Good job Libs
Still not a patch on the original though.
THE BESSSSSST!!!!!!!!!!
wow, carl's voice is so like.. the rendition is almost the same :)
Fair point. All the same, a great cover. Probably one of the few decent ones.
And me who thought this song was uncovorable ... My god I'm foolish I'm talkin bout Pete and Carl ,normal it's great !
i quite like it
@harryspoonpotter the singing is actually not quite poor. pete has a very unique voice and pretty nice range really
Les anglais sont vraiment forts pour la musique....Beatles, Doherty, Alt-j...
Je suis colombienne et je pense le meme sur les anglais
@skint0n0minted no, but you would instantly realise how good the beatles are at constantly producing great songs.
