A very informative insight on a highly influential album, at least for me. The nods to the Kosmische where very clear to me. however I never knew how much of a commercial failure this album was. It makes me appreciate Slowdive and respect them even more. Great video. Sharing w my mates.
I love that this video was made of the great Pygmalion! Thank you! For reference I would say, keep in mind that music journalists are not democratic representatives of the listening audience. Countless times I recall reading the snarky dismissive reviews of bands/albums that I and my friends/scene were in love with. Often the printed reviews did not reflect what the street & club were reacting to. I was a fan of all these bands back in the day when these records were new & being released. The scene that is called Shoegaze was also just seen to us young listeners as just "new, awesome bands". We never expected these bands to be as big and commercial as Oasis or Nirvana. No insult to these latter bands, which we also loved, but it is clear to hear that Oasis is a far more exploitable band than MBV, Slowdive, Acetone, or Sharkboy. An album like Pygmalion was never going to be a big hit, but that's ok because it's an introspective, isolationist type of art. It is the type of album that slowly burns its way into pop/music culture. There are many albums that fall into this genus. So much of what we know of music history today relies on the printed reviews of yesterdays' journalists that we take it as the total accurate truth. The record of the fans' reviews would bring a better balanced account of music history sometimes.
I’m so glad media isn’t beholden to Ivy League-educated journalists anymore, who in their own narcissism declare what is and isn’t culturally relevant based on on their own class guilt. Imagine some dude from Yale or Oxford telling the world what is and isn’t working class. Working class kids can day dream, too.
The music is a high in itself, man. Chemical dependency has no correlation with taste… well maybe if you’re a RUclips comment section troll it does. Be kind to yourself.
Before Loveless, My Bloody Valentine was a goth band. Check out the story of their early days next 👉 ruclips.net/video/yuWq-VPD7JA/видео.html
