The world would be a better place if all videos were as concise and accurate as this one. Many thanks!
Thank your for the concise video! our issue was intermittent, turns out there was a nice coating of dog hair on the filter. Your guide was super easy to follow, took 15 minutes!
It's a bra pad and that's exactly what was causing my issue too, Thank you for helping this single mama fix her washer!
Odd I found the same thing
I just found the samething. Thats the second bra pad for me in 6 months.
I'm a single mama too and this video helped me tremendously. All I could think of was, "Lord! Not now! I don't need this now!", when my machine died the same error codes. I found loose change, hair twisties, bra pads, and a Bobby pin. I thank GOD for you and this video. Keep 'em coming and GOD bless you and yours!
Add us to the list of victims of AWOL bra pads stuck in the filter. Also found two pennies, one of which must have been in there for years because it had eroded down so that it was a tiny bit smaller than a dime! Thank you for the excellent video! How do I donate to your channel?
Thank you so much! I was able to do this myself and it seems to be working now. I can't help but think this trap should have been designed with easier access, though.
This video is 1. completely accurate, 2 simple to do, 3. makes the person fixing it look like a hero.
Thank you so much!
Nice video. Saved me . Mine was a covid cloth mask
Thanks a lot for this video. Saved me a ton of money. The whirlpool service wanted me to replace the washer
Can anyone be ever tire of receiving grateful praise? Your video saved me! Since mine machine sits on a drawer, I had 2x4 rectangular “stilts” to slide it out on and could easily access it from underneath. Thanks again❤️
THANK YOU!!! You saved us a huge hassle of trying to figure this out. Very detailed and thorough explanation. Great job and well done!!
You’re welcome, thank you for the kind comment 👍
Super helpful and fixed my problem. One additional item, I took off the drain hose and cleaned that out first, hoping it would solve the problem. It didn't, but lots of gross stuff came out of the hose so may be worth adding that to your list of potential fixes.
Thank you so much! You are a life saver! You saved my clothes from molding. They were stuck in there for a day and a half and I was almost running out of underwear 😂. You saved me so much time and a heachache. Much love bro.
Future generations may call you Lifesaver. I don’t know how much money you saved this household, but you saved me from a weekend of frustration, hurt feelings and unecessary anger.
I caused the damage, twas a guitar pick that brought on the fault.
Your video may not qualify you for sainthood, but you are a superhero in my book.
Two things i would add: Wear workgloves, the backplate cuts like a knife. (Not really an issue unless you are working in tight quarters like i was, still…)
The machine will drain for 8-10 minutes after cleaning, be patient. (I wasn’t…)
Jesse, the Maytag Repairman, had another day of solitaire at the office thanks to you dude. (Mixing metaphors?)
Thank you!
Happy to help. Guitar pick, that’s a new one. Sounds like it’s mostly bra pads and washable facemasks causing the issues these days.
I’ll remind my wife and kids that I’m a superhero, at least in some households.😀
Have a great day.
Thank you for this DIY! We had not one, but FOUR bra pads stuffed in there. Your video was simple to follow and I did it in about 25 min total. (including the copious water clean up - I recommend having the salad bowl like you did and a larger bucket nearby to continually dump into, with a towel under)
4 bra pads for me too!
My daughter told me to take the bra pads out when you wash them...kind of annoying every time, but it also make the pads last longer. lol
We had a breastfeeding bra pad in there too. I had chocked it up the the mysterious disappearance of laundry but now I think we blonde what’s possible.
Two things:
1.) baby socks - LOTS of baby socks (I was wondering where they were going 😂)
2.) Thank you so much!! My day was ruined because I thought I had to buy a new washer but you made it better! This was so easy to do!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Thank you for posting this DIY video...it saved me time and money waiting for a service call. Did it myself in 30 minutes, found 2 face masks. Definitely do not forget the shallow bowl(s) to catch the water coming out and tons of towels rags!
Thank you for posting this video. It fixed the problem and prevented me from paying $100 fee to my warranty company. Only took me about 25 mins from start to finish.
You’re welcome, happy to help.👍
Awesome, this fixed mine. I had error code F03 E01. Door lock light was flashing and machine was humming. Went in and clicked power button (which evidently clears the error code). Couldn't power back on and lock light still flashed. Tried unplugging, leaving, and plugging back in. It instantly went back to humming and lock light flashing. Performed the steps in this video and cleaned out a very hairy trap and lint filled trap. Put everything back to rights and plugged back in. Still humming and door locked. Left on and humming (which is actually the drain cycle) for about 10 minutes and it eventually stopped and shut off. Went to machine, was able to power it on with the power button, and everything worked as expected. All in all this was relatively easy (30 minutes of work) and everything was fixed. Thank you for putting out the video.
Hey just would like to say quick word. Thanks for the awesome video! Did it to mine last night and it worked. Ours was full of water so it took a little to drain it before pulling that screen out. But just wanted to say thanks for making the video !
THANK YOU SO MUCH to the online advisors !! My experience with a Maytag washing machine:
( which I love btw) Got F09 and E01 error codes. Machine stopped spinning/draining mid-cycle. Door was locked and error codes flashing. Called repair guy who told me I need a new drain pump.
After he left, I started looking online for help (b/c I had a feeling it might JUST be an easy fix.) WISH I HAD DONE THAT FIRST b/c I could have saved $150 service call.
I cleared the error codes with your help. But then I got new codes: F03 and E01 ( water level sensor error)
SO got more help ONLINE !! The fellow said to do this: 1) Plug the machine back in. I did that and could hear the drain pump humming but not doing anything--and I could not start a new cycle b/c the panel still had errors. 2) he said let the pump run ( He said NO it won't hurt the pump ) until it shuts off. it will be ABOUT 8 MINUTES. The pump needs to run through a full error cycle uninterrupted.
BINGO !!! All error codes gone. Door open. Control panel normal. Ran two wash cycles to test and the drain pump works FINE.
I sent Maytag a message that they need to include more information about error codes and possible fixes. IF IT WASN"T FOR YOU AND YOUR HELP.... I'D BE PAYING FOR A NEW DRAIN PUMP.
Sorry this was a long message but I hope it helps someone else.
Thank you! Followed your instructions and got my washer working again! Now off to do my laundry 😊
Great job!
I had this error message tonight, watched your video, and had the problem solved in 20 minutes. The cleanup took the longest. Our block was a little kid sock. Thanks so much for the really informative video!
Thanks for this! Just as described. One pointer: If your load is full, don't force drain it (obviously) but it takes a long time to let the water drain into the bowl. Don't pull out the plug--just unscrew it till the water drains. It took 15-20 bowls of water before I could remove the trap. Had I removed the trap right off, we'd have had a deluge.
You were right but I was in a hurry and just did it before reading comments. I had a small bucket handy in case I could use it but it was 1/2" too high to stick in there. So I made a small flood that I've cleaned up but the water got under the floor boards and who knows if it will dry ok or cause more problems.
Can't thank you enough for this video. Those were the codes I was reading on our washer, and had not idea about the filter inside the back of the washer. All good now!!
You are welcome!
thank you! Just spent five minutes saving myself chunk of money. A bra pad was the main clogger of my drain. Plus several hairbands, $.47 in change and a hair ball from hell. Again, thank you for making a simple, easy to follow video.
You’re welcome, so happy that you were able to fix it👍 bra pads and washable masks seem to be the main culprits these days...
I think I’m ready to be a home owner. 😉
I was able to fix my parent’s washer, by watching this video.
Thank you so much!!
I fixed my washer quickly and easy thanks to the accurate and detailed video. I learned to appreciate power tools too :D Thank you so much for posting!!
Thank you! This video saved me a service call to my local appliance repair shop! Best of all I was able to get our machine up and running quickly. I found similar debris in my trap: 4 color catcher sheets (I HATE those things even more now), some weed whacker cord, a nasty hairball and two pennies! Yes, I made money doing this repair! :-))
Thank you so much for the tip. Serviceman wanted to charge just to take a look. Fixed it after work within 15 minutes. Thanks again
You're welcome!
This is an excellent video!!! So well done. All the little things mentioned. Solved my problem entirely. I have dogs. My clogged with dog hair.
Really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. Meant I didn't have to call a S=service technician. THANK YOU !!!
The cycle had stopped in the middle of a cycle, so there was a *huge* amount of water on the hardwood floor. It was tough getting it up. I would suggest that people put more than a shallow bowl as they remove it if it is mid cycle. I would put as large a pan as I could below the drain as it is removed. That still may not be enough if it is mid-cycle, but it's something. I like the suggestion someone made about a tote. In any case, do not underestimate the amount of water that might be inside the machine ready to come out of that drain.
When I buy a washing machine again, it is absolutely essential that there is a front access door for this filter. The Maytag 5500 washer I have got high Consumer Reports ratings. What do they know about dog hair and drains? I had gone three or four years without cleaning mine. Now I'm going to have to clean it every year at least. I don't want this problem again. This model was designed to meet a price point not for serviceability.
Was wearing smelly clothes for 3 weeks because I couldn’t get my washer working. Thank you so much for the video!
Thank you so much! Fixed! Found a youth tube sock in there! The only problem I encountered as a 52 year old woman with arthritis was opening the counter clockwise lid and also getting it back to tight. Thanks again!
Seems we were on "Team Tammy", I also did it myself, 52yr old with Rheumatoid arthritis. The cap was hard, plus my washer isn't up on a riser so I had to lay down to get to it. But, did it! Great gideo
Thank you for the walk through. Saved me a call to the repair man. I appreciate it.
Happy to help 👍
Just finished following the steps described in your great video.
The knob was hard to turn by hand but I used small channel lock pliers and gently turned it counter clockwise. Once it was loose I could turn it by hand and remove the filter. Two quarters and two pennies later I was able to tighten everything back up and try the washer. It seems to be working again and we’re so thankful for your video.
Best regards!
Happy it worked!
Omg I was worried I was the only one struggling with this. Thank you!
Except now I’ve cracked the lid.
Saved me money. Bra pads, baby socks and gunk. Cleaned it all works like a champ! Thank you!
You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind comment!👍😎
Thanks for posting this video. It was exactly what we needed to do. We were a little worried when all we found was a quarter 2 pennies, a small safety pin and a hearing aid battery. But it worked. Definitely worth the time and energy. Note, I wasn't strong enough to unscrew the trap, my husband had to do that part.
Lmao all I found was a dollars worth of change and that’s what clogged it up. Thankfully I found this video and avoided buying a new washer lol
Thanks brother we were having the same problem I seen this video did as u said and now it’s running again …. I thought we were gana have to pay someone to fix it … thanks again
Bro! Thank you so much for sharing! This was exactly what I needed. I cleaned this trap out (it was super-clogged) and now I'm running great. The smell is gone too!!!
Thank you so much for this, I pulled out 5 of my wife's makeup pads from there, back to working again. I even had a repairman out and he didn't mention this, very frustrating. He said pour drano down the drain and cut the drainage hose because it was too long. You saved me a lot of hassle
Thank you!! At first I couldn’t figure out where the filter was located! Lol! But when I took the filter out, it was full of junk! I hope this fixes my problem!
You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind comment!👍😎
Thank you for this video. I was able to fix our washer. Perfectly detailed description of what to do.
Thank you - this is exactly the video I needed! Fixed my washer in about 20 minutes.
watched the video and 30 minutes later the job was done. The only difference was my screws were not 1/4 inch. I couldn't find one that fit so I ended up having to us a hex driver bit on my drill.
Thank you so much for your video. You are truly a life saver.
Awesome! I’m glad it worked👍
Great solution to the problem. It turns out we had the exact same item stuck in ours, not one but two! Lovely
Thank you for this video! It’s saved me twice now from calling a repair service. Love it!
Thank you so much for this helpful and easy to follow video! I was able to get my washing machine back up and running during nap time with plenty of time to spare. Now I don't have to pay someone to do it for me!
Wow!! Damn.... I followed this video exactly every step and it was PERFECT. I even had the thing that looks like a shoulder pad for women's shirt or bra pad... plus an eye mask (for sleeping) plus a quarter and 2 dimes.... and all that was encased in what looked like sand!!! Taking the filter out was like pulling out a brick of playdoh. Ewwww.
Thank you so very much for this video! Greatly appreciated. 👍
Worked! Thank you so much! We had two bra pads and two masks, it's amazing the washer didn't quite sooner.

Maytag Direct Drive
Model: MHW 5500 FW0
Your video saved me a call to a repair shop! Thanks!
Besides the E01-F09 code, I also had E01-F03 & cleaning the trap took care of both issues.
😎🔔
Super easy fix. As simple as the video shows. I had two of those pad thingys in mine. I would love to know how they get in to the drain system.
“What is THIS!?!?” 😂. 2:54
I found 3 of them!
Excellent video. Took me less than 30min to get it fixed!
Thank you so much for this video! Bra pads were also our culprit (x3!) easy fix and your video was spot on!
Thank you, this was the exact problem I had… saved me money and time.
Like everyone else this worked and saved me some money! I found a rusty box cutter, $1 Gold Coin and a whole bunch of nastiness. Thank you.
I really appreciate you making this vid. You saved me a costly repair bill. The culprit in my trap like a previous poster said was a stupid Covid mask. My trap didn't lefty loosey by hand so I needed channel locks to unscrew and a boat load of rags underneath.
Worked like a charm! Thanks dude...had gunk, coins AND an old face mask in the filter... I owe you a beer!...
Great job!
This worked! Thank you! I only had a screw and twist tie in the drain but those 2 were enough to trigger the error code. I wasn't able to use a Phillips screwdriver but my Ring doorbell screwdriver worked in a pinch.
Thank you for the amazing video it was exactly my problem. Your video made my night much easier! Thank you
Tip: you can slowly remove the filter by opening slightly and reclosing, use a shallow bowl (pet food bowl) to catch water and dump into a bucket repeatedly to avoid a big mess of water. Also reach up into the drain while the filter is out to remove any other items that may be backlogged. Thank you for the video!!!
This video was fantastic, and it really helped solve a potentially big problem with a simple solution. Thank you very much. I just completed the drain clean out and it seems to be working just as you indicated.
Happy to help👍
Followed your instructions step by step and worked like a charm! Thanks so much
Happy to help!👍
Awesome help. Having a medium size mixing bowl handy to catch the water will be an asset. We had trouble putting the plug back in afterwards because it kept wanting to cross-thread. With a whole family in the trades we ended up with a tray full of long drywall screws, 7 screw tips, coins..etc. Thank again
Awesome. Thanks for the video. Hardest part was moving the washer/dryer (stacked), and they're in a flood pan per code. Took more time to move it than to fix it!
Found a cotton wrapped bandaid and that is it. Fingers crossed as I run a cycle. Thanks for this video!
Fix worked for me. One detail which I gathered from the comments below is that after opening back of the machine I had to use a plier to turn the filter counter clockwise.
Thanks for this informative video, found a sock blocking the drain pump. Great instructions.
Thanks! Success. Cleaning that trap worked like a charm. It's working now.
Good info. I have a Maytag MHW8200FC and the steps were the same. I found 3 bra pads, 1 pendant, and misc small debris.
Another, potentially easier way to get at the strainer is to pull the washer forward, then rock it backwards exposing the bottom. Then take off the bottom plate (mine has two screws and two plastic retention plugs). The strainer is then nicely exposed and I can get a fairly large tote under it. I just did mine and didn’t spill a drop. I contemplated not re-installing the bottom plate to make it easier the next time, but I did re-install it. And like the content creator stated, my drain strainer was clogged (with a plastic label from a new pair of jeans). Thanks for the video man!
Thanks! Excellent video instruction for the exact washer we have. Saved us a service call.
Thanks, your video was exactly what I needed to repair my machine.
Thank you! Easy to do and saved us money for a repairman.
Thank you for posting this was really helpful! Fixed the issue right away!
Great video! Also the water alarms would be great under the aquarium!
You’re welcome, thank you for the kind comment 👍
Bra pad from swimsuit! Mine went missing and low and behold that's exactly what was plugging mine up! Thanks for this video!
Great video! Thanks!
Unfortunately, I was not so lucky....
Although my trap was quite filthy, not as bad as yours, I had to remove the whole drain assembly and clean it thoroughly.
Plugged the drain pump back in without the rest of the assembly, the motor reluctantly started spinning, but once it was under pressure with water and fully installed again, it was clear the motor was dead, or dying enough not to work and throw the code.
This was a used unit that came with the house we purchased. So here’s an additional tip: maintain your trap, before you start seeing codes, it’s very easy to do, even easier before you get stuck with a locked door and tub full of water.
Another tip: don’t be lazy about laundry! Empty all pockets, shake off excess dirt, remove pet hair as much as possible and you should be 👌. Two minutes checking clothes before every load will save you an entire night assessing a problem, ordering parts and waiting for parts to show, then installing parts a few days later, or more costly, waiting for the repair guy to fix it for you.
So easy, so simple, clean the trap before you burn out the pump motor.
Good luck out there.
Edit: Also, if you plan to do this repair/maintenance yourself, and the door to the washer is locked, be sure to have a wet vac handy, and as mentioned in the video, plenty of towels. ESPECIALLY if you’re doing this on finished floors. There will be a LOT of water leftover in the tub. I was lucky enough that my washer was in the utility room with a sloped concrete flooor straight to the drain, so I just let it go. You will want to take extra precautions to protect as many things from water damage as possible.
How much did you pay for a new pump motor?
@@bford066
I can’t remember exactly,
But I want to say in the $90-$120 range.
That’s Canadian dollars as well. Just call around to local parts dealers, you’ll get a good idea that way.
Laughing cause no one mentioned a locked door until your comment. I think my tub is full and it's gonna be a pain sliding it out from the wall. Good tip for the shop vac. Thanks. Wish we could gain access from you front.
Hey, I hope you see this. I had the code come up on my identical Maytag to the one seen in the video. I followed the steps and cleaned the trap two weeks ago. The code has come back on. Tried cleaning the trap again and there was a little junk but not much. Then the code came back on, the door won’t unlock.
Wondering two questions.
1.) do you know if there’s a way to clean the pump?
2.) is replacing the pump the best next step if cleaning the trap isn’t extinguishing the code?
Thank you. Anyone can answer this, but I replied to you, sir, because every other comment I have read has been a success with a simple trap clean.
I realize I will need a more integrated approach. I hope someone who knows the right answer can help me out. Wishing you all the best.
@@ryansutt
I posted this comment 3 years ago, and I’ve since moved on to a new house with new appliance issues.
I’ll do my best to answer your questions, with the fact that I’m not an appliance technician. I do like to tinker and take things apart, I consider myself moderately handy to fix certain issues.
Is there a way to clean the pump? Probably. If memory serves me, I didn’t think it was possible or practical because I knew the motor was dying or dead. A lot of these units have plastic assemblies that don’t come apart easily or at all.
Replacing the pump if cleaning the trap didn’t work for clearing codes? It worked for me. But only because between me and my father, we knew the motor was bad. Unfortunately I think we put too many computers in too many things. So just because you have the same code, doesn’t mean you have the same problem.
If you consider yourself relatively handy and have some basic tools, it was a pain in the ass but relatively easy repair to replace the pump. If you can do it yourself, also somewhat inexpensive compared to having a technician do it or replacing the unit.
Replacing the pump saved me a lot of money, and the machine worked for the next year before we sold the house with no issues.
When you work on your own appliances, be 100% sure you know what you’re doing though. Otherwise, call a licensed professional to do the job for you.
Best of luck and stay safe.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video! Mine did not have bra parts in the trap but I needed cleaned just the same and fixed the problem. The only thing not mentioned in the video is that you'll have to continue to empty the shallow pan until the washer empties. I used a pan from a indoor house plant and it took about 2 gallons to fully drain. You can loosen the trap, allow water to pour into the shallow pan then tighten it while you empty the pan into a bucket. Thanks again!
You’re welcome! Consider a donation to my Super Thanks. If not, that’s totally okay!👍😎
Hilarious! Your mystery item is the nip pad from a ladies swimsuit top or sports bra! :) Hahaha Thanks for the vid help!!
😂😂😂
Thanks you for the informative and detailed video. I found 4 face masks, 2 hair elastics, a Bobby pin and a bunch of lint in mine. Better here than in the pump I guess! Thanks again!
Fixing my washer was as easy as it looked in the video. Thanks!
Worked perfectly and saved me the cost of a service call. Thanks !
Worked like a charm. Thanks for the Vid on this easy DIY fix!!
Excellent video. To catch the water, I used a basin that fit under the trap, and siphoned the water into a larger recepticle. No mess. Turning the trap cover was impossible without a tool. I used an Angle Nose Slip Joint Pliers, not to grip, but to twist like my fingers would.
Thank you for this. Mine was also full of junk. There were 3 color catchers in the trap. Washer works like a charm now.
Happy to help, glad it worked!
So don't let the gentle removal fool you. When I removed the filter off of mine, Niagara falls poured on me. "Shallow bowl & paper towels?" More like a bucket and towels.
Youre a genius thanks, you just saved my entire weekend
I checked the trap, nothing. I replaced the pump, same problem. I replaced the air valve, same problem. I replaced the check valve, same problem. My wife then got the bright idea to change the spin cycle Medium on every wash load. So far, it has been 6 months without a problem. I think sometimes the spin cycle doesn't let the water drain causing the problem. Change the spin rate to medium or slow and see if it helps!
Thank you so much! I pulled out 6 1/2 masks and running it again to see if it pushes anything else into the trap! I’ll be putting my masks into garment bags only from now on! I feel like McGiver after that💪
HA! Nice job!
THANK YOU! I pulled a whole entire sock out of mine! And so much gross stuff!
You are AMAZING thank you!!! You saved me a repair bill!!
You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind comment!👍😎
Saved me a couple hundred dollars, thank you so much
You’re welcome. Happy to help👍😎
We cleaned out the drain pump trap and there was a mask in there. We thought that was the reason for the error code since most of the time it doesn't error out at all, but we put it all back together and it gave the code again later that day after another load of laundry. What next? Could the pump really need replacing if it doesn't code every time we use it? @checkitout
Wondering the same.
Thanks! Here's a few bucks to say thanks!
Thanks so much. Washer was SOOOO clogged with pet hair, candy wrappers, dryer sheets.
This was a big help, couple old facemasks stuck in there . Thank you
I have a Maytag that is very similar to the one in the video. One important thing not mentioned in the video is that once you have cleaned the drain, the machine may not want to power up and the Door Lock button will flash. That's because there is still some moisture in the pump. Leave it plugged in for a few minutes and the issue should resolve itself.
This helped me a ton! Thank you 100 times over.
Thank you! You helped me fixed my grandparents washer 💖✨🫶🏻
You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind comment!👍😎
Ok, I was convinced our blockage had to be a face mask because my bras don't have loose pads but my bikinis do. However, I "almost" always wash both swimsuits and bras in lingerie bags....well it was definitely a bikini pad 🙄 Thank you so much for the video! We did have to refer to another video to see that our particular model needed to be accessed from underneath the machine but your video showed us how simple the fix would be. Now waiting to see if the code resets so we can open the door!
If I am not mistaken some of the Maxima Models have to be accessed from the front
Thank you very much for this information! Just saved me a bunch of money being able to do this myself. The unidentified item in the video is a bra pad!! I found the same thing clogging my washer! 😂
You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind comment!👍😎
Great help, thanks! By the way, that piece of material is the padding from a sports bra or swim suit.😄
