Great video. It was a pleasure working along side you at the workshop. The blocks form a fairly light insulating substructure (well light is relative I guess-the blocks weighed about 10lb each, but it is a LOT of blocks). Most of the strength comes from the skins. I think one shot hints at this - in this case there was fiberglass mesh lath in the first coat of plaster. That was installed as the walls of the dome went up (after we cleared about 5', we lathed and plastered the first 4' for additional strength before we continued higher). That said, the finished structure is quite strong. One thing I will add - While I still love the concept after the workshop, the workshop did show us it is labor intensive. But that is to be expected when you are building something out of about 1k blocks, virtually all of which need to be to fitted. The workshop was well worth the experience, and most of us look forward to working on more domes in the future.

I did a workshop with Dome Gaia back in 2019 in Baja, Mexico. What a fantastic experience. Dome Gaia is a very conscious and spiritual based company. The instructors are awesome. I worked with Rafa and Iggy who were amazing. Our group was well balanced (men and women) and we all bonded beautifully. Some of us are still in touch. Currently I am looking for land in NC and envisioning my dome house and future retreat with mini domes for lodging and retreats. Glad you had a great experience and what a beautiful dome!

So cool!!! I am actually going to be taking up Welding. The classes are from Feb to May. I want to be able to make certain things on my van without paying a fortune to someone else. For example, I want to turn my under-mounted spare tire area into a hidden lock box with access from inside the van...and a custom roof rack and swing-away basket rack I can hitch to...oh...and still thinking about how I want to attach a winch. My only fear is the problem I have with my hands. I have to atleast try and adjust as needed😊.

Hi Dee , even though the building of Dome Houses with Aircrete is an exciting concept , here in the UK buildings that have been built with Aircrete have been found to have structural damage and are having to be demolished . Aircrete has a relatively shorter life span than other building materials , with this in mind just be careful if you are considering investing .

Greetings from Panama. I actually was looking to build with aircrete. But I got a “NO! No!” from the municipal office. I was only allowed to use local products to get a building permit. I still build a circular 2 level house. The local call it already “De Castillo” because they think I’m building a German castle. Even on the delivery papers it says: Calle de Castillo….. We don’t have road names yet where I’m building. I do all by myself. 😂 - Nice video. When I talked 5 or 6 years ago about Domgaia, my friends were thinking that I was stupid. One of my buddies, a Mexican who lived in Canada, returned to Mexico to build his retirement house. He always thought that I was nuts. Guess what he was building? Right. A dome house. I was shocked and jealous at the same time. Well. He said he didn’t apply for a permit. Go figure it out.

@LadyBugout Still need to finish the walls on the second floor. I'm an old handicapped guy, and it gets really hot after 1pm, I just work 6 hours a day on it. This month all will be finished with the walls, I hope. (Rain season 🫣) Next months or the following month, the roof. I am not in a hurry. Still waiting for power to be put into the area. The power company says always that they are behind. But soon. What ever that means in Panama.

You are an adventurous woman! I did a brain retraining program hosted in Austin about 10 years ago that had a restaurant with garden food prepared fresh daily on site. I was wishing I could go back and eat there daily, it felt good on the body! Texas girl not in Texas anymore but I have traversed those outback’s a few times in boots with fishing rods stepping over longhorn steer patties. Some interesting characters for sure 😊
Covered in concrete mix everyday had to be a bit taxing. I’m more than a bit sensitive to the building products being used, but if I wasn’t that would be cool to play with on a small scale model board mice size for a season before taking on a full scale project 🤷‍♀️

In Baja Mexico they make homes from recycled tires covered with cement and painted mostly for women in shelters victims of domestic abuse and their children. They have to do some light work like making handcrafts etc and help to build it in order to earn them as they’re given/ leased to them free. The institution is called Women with Dignity. You’d be surprised how pretty and cool they look after they’re finished and painted, but the women and children have to keep being productive members of society to keep them.

good day lady bugout my name is edward ,new to your channel found it while checking out other van build videos , i watched several of your videos and came across the one where you camped in the hiawatha , i moved to the u.p. two years ago thought it would be a great idea to live off grid so i purchased a cabin with 35 acres in the middle of the hiawatha , it needed a lot of work , it was late august when i started work on it and by september it was already below 32 at night and still had no heat source so had to leave and find an apartment , ended up in iron mountain it was the only place i could find that would except my pets , planned on getting back at it in spring but decided to sell instead, just being out there 1 hour drive away from escanaba and munising was a bit much , so i purchased a van and started my build , so far the walls and ceiling are insulated with havelock wool a moisture barrier and paneling i used owens corning pink board for the floor insulation . it's a little to cold to work outside now but look forward to spring and finishing build , plan on exploring everything the u.p. has to offer love it up here . i have a red van as well if you see me out there camping , riding dirt bikes , mountain bikes , hiking stop and say hello you have an amazing personality and would love to meet you . safe travels

Hello again....the aircrete weighs 10lbs, very close to what a gallon jug of water weighs which is 8.33lbs, but a cinder block weighs 35lbs, so yeah, aircrete will save your back for sure. Have you heard of an earthbag dome ? I like hempcrete myself, but then you have to do framing. Kirstin Dirksen's channel has a round house made of hempcrete, its amazing, check it out. @donnahibbard1774 that was built on an already eroding Island in the 80s. Multiple hurricanes damaged it and it had been abandoned since 91. Please research more than what pops up in the first 10 articles, and at least read about it before you use an example of a dome home destroyed by hurricane Ian.

This is intriguing. I wonder if this construction is appropriate for the north country. I know people who have made straw bale homes, which seems chancy with the humidity we get and chance of rain while building. I like the idea of masonry mass for cooling in the summer and holding heat in the winter.
