Hi Brent great video, I'm struggling with having motivation to study better and pass my college classes (beginning prerequisite classes) since I feel there is not really anything else to pursue. But I keep thinking of how this might just because I want approval from parents and people around me or security. Part of me wants to just work hard but at the same time I know it won't make me happy. but if I don't do something I will fail and get even less out of it just like I have in the past. I feel it's necessary but I know I won't be healed or feel too much better at the end. Maybe I should work harder but also accept that it's not the one thing I need?
I clicked on this vid for the exact same reason. Kinda reassuring because for a moment it felt like out of the people I knew I was the only one that felt this way. I’m a college freshman and just can’t seem to get up in the mornings anymore even though I don’t want to fail. I will see if things change after trying out this exercise.
I think you're answering your own quesiton very well. An alternative way of approaching this is to simply ask: What's the wisest choice for me to make in these circumstances? It might simply make sense to see your degree through. If so, then commit to it completely. If you feel called to do something else, then do that. The key is to get off the fence and be in commitment with what you're doing.
Please let us know how it works. Here's something to consider. When you say "i just can't seemt o get up in the mornings, even though I don't want to fail" it suggests to me that you're unwilling to fail, and so therefore you'll sleep in as much as you can until you have no choice BUT to get to work. In other words you won't do any work until you HAVE TO. Isn't this so? You sleep in, in the mornings, because you don't really believe it's necessary to get out of bed early. Imagine there were a $10,000 prize available for you if you got out of bed by 6am... would you get out of bed? Yes. So just be honest that when you sleep in, you do so because you feel you can do this AND achieve your aims. You're probably right. The price that you're paying is that everything is left last-minute, it's disorganized, chaotic, and your final scores will be lower than they otherwise would be. Is this acceptable for you? If yes, then continue as you were. If no, then establish WHY it's unacceptable. Establish THAT IT IS unacceptable. Do this successfully and then it will be necessary to get out of bed earlier. See?
necessity is an interesting concept
I love how it recontextualizes our understanding of motivation
Great stuff, love it
