Corruption is killing AFRICA
If corruption is killing your country and Africa at large, rebel... The citizens must stop being a cohort of the elites... just accepting the crumbs on the table is diabolical on the citizens.
Correction, corruption has killed Africa
Africans killed Africa. Better if the Chinese take over.
It's also killing China.
What corruption you need to learn your lesson if you still call what europeans are doing corruption.
Stop scapegoating, the chinese property developers would have not done this without the goverment's approval. Poor planning and an incompetent government is the issue.
Louder.
She said the government so what you talking about
Your point being ??
My thoughts exactly! China China China....when will we as Africans take responsibility for our actions and take our leadership to account?
Then Chinese developers are part of the problem. They are using the corrupt system to exploit Africans. They are part and parcel of the "poor planning" process. They bribe those corrupt government officials to get a favorable bid. Make no mistakes any business has a social responsibility to the community. The main problem may lie on the government but the property developers have their share of issues. Are trying to tell us if the company/developers dumps hazardous waste it is the "incompetent government". Chinese developers and companies are breading corruption and destroying communities across the developing countries.
Thats not the problem of the Chinese.
The residents should instead go and arrest the corrupt staff at Nairobi municipality's or sue them.
they should move to runda. they don't like skyscrapers blocking their sun
@@DotiVirtuoso Running away from a problem is never a solution to a problem. You solve problems where you are. Otherwise by running away to Runda, you will just be injecting another "let's run away" mindset into Runda and very soon Runda will also end up being another concrete jungle. No, don't run away from challenges around you. Learn to set about solving them. The malaise affecting Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Lavington, etc has its origins in the high levels of corruption at City Hall and other development approving agencies and regulatory authorities.
Is there law and order in Kenya? Has the state collapsed to a point where residents of an estate should make it their business to arrest corrupt city hall officials? What's EACC for? What's DCI for?
@@georgeodhiambo598 Very good question !
They should arrest all of them too for not doing their jobs.
They increased the limit to 20 floors. They just yapping. @@georgeodhiambo598
A building construction company cannot solve the city's infrastructure problem. The government shall be responsible for basic needs; a company is doing what it can do to make money.
Very poor reasoning. They are adding to the infrastructure mess by interfering with sewer lines, straining water resources, affecting neighboring buildings. All you developers especially those who bribed the county will be jailed very soon
@@kop23982 Unfortunately, the system we have is that contractors do their job and then the government complements their work by providing infrastructure. The Nairobi political elite could care less about Kilimani residents.
What garbage. Even in the US, before building a house or apartment, the builder is charged impact fees to fund schools and safety plus front foot fees for water and sewer.
I completely agree with you the buildings are not owned by Chinese
Only a fool builds a house on sand or instability...
what the hell do you mean by ''Chinese'' ? as if they are the problem. they are just contractors paid by rich Kenyans and given the permit to build by the county Governmen
Yeah, that is just a red herring.

Why should the Chinese contractors respond?? This is a corrupt government issue...scapegoating will not solve the issue
Yes a government issue exacerbated by developer bribery
@@chrisg9125 Wachana na developers. You didn't elect them and they are not accountable to you. It is the corrupt individuals we elect that stand accused. We pay they hefty salaries and allowances to look after our interests, but they change their colours and start dining with corrupt individuals to circumvent the law.
VOA is owned by Americans ofcourse they will see Chinese in everything
Kilimani became from being one of the best places in Nairobi before 2016 to the worst place... if you're renting or buying an apartment in Kilimani, it's best to stay away from those those chinese apartments. The ceiling is too short, and the rooms are very small. Look for older African owned buildings. We moved out of Kilimani in 2018 to somewhere more accommodating to our family's needs.
Bro. Speak for yourself. Kilimani is a very big place. I live in Kilimani, love my apt and the conveniences and would not want to live anywhere else. E.g a 10m apt cannot be compared to a 50m apt, and these could be next to each other in Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Lavington or any other place.
I am one young engineer very satisfied owner of a two bedroom apartment in the same neighbourhood. A hidden agenda on this VOA piece. The Chinese contractors are assisting citizens own quality homes where they would not have managed.
@@johngitau7438Bro. I may need to talk to you. You may assist me, maybe pliz.
@@johngitau7438 Of course, you are satisfied because you are among the "invaders" into Kilimani who are contributing towards its degradation and sluminization. Those who were enjoying the tranquil, green and airy life before cannot comment the way you do. You and your ilk have taken away the comfort of others in order to have your comfort. That's scarcity mentality premised upon belief that in order for you to have, someone else must loose. Next time, develop abundance mentality, go and acquire a "greenfield" land and create you green and tranquil Kilimani there.
America has issues with anthing Chinese...im Kenyan,
the problem are the corrupt govt officials
And Nigerians.
Only corrupt individuals can support unplanned development
Blame it on Governor Sakaja, not the Chinese investors
EXACTLY.
ALL the 47 'Governors' main job title is to look out for illegal projects that will land huge BRIBES, in their secret Accounts!
Greeeeeeed
This kind of construction should be done in Konza city ... Nairobi is Saturated
Exactly. We need more green spaces here.
Nairobi was not designed to hold over 5 million people. The city is overcrowded; the solution is to spread commerce to other cities so that people can have an incentive to move out. Adding taller buildings does not fix the problem. The government should work to secure Northern Kenya so new cities can be established there.
Same thing to addis. Its overcrowded
Unplanned construction must stop it's not safe
SAKAJA is to BLAME!
SAKAJA is taking HUGE BRIBES from Developers to allow HIGH RISES that ALL DUMP SEWEAGE into the GROUND WATER TABLE!
RUTO needs to take ACTION, NOW!
Sakaja is the biggest let down.
I hope he reads this so it is said to his face how dissapointed we are in him. But such people really don't care.
Agree that not all this started on his watch but its the person who can stop it but does not who should carry the biggest blame!!
The problem is local government, stop the propaganda.
99.9% of those supporting the construction of these buildings cannot even afford to buy them.
Is it Chinese of Nairobi city council?
Hopefully the canalisation is sufficient in this area, otherwise, especially when there is heavy rain, it might get unpleasant. Problems Dubai has also: The Burji al Arab is not connected to a canalisation. Every morning dozens if not hundreds of tanker trucks transport the excrements into the desert...
No more houses should be built in Nairobi Cba and its environs. Building in konza
Nairobi is going to be like Bangladesh soon at this rate with overcrowded poor urban planning
Where is sewage area for all those highrise constructions?Even no public schools/hospital in that area!
Blame your government not construction company
Complaining about the chinese in your own country , the incompetence of african governments is a disgrace
You have to link your stories to the Chinese.
Yikes! Important to get these things done well for everyone!
Who said all the buildings belong to the Chinese?
The areas close to the city center should be high-rise buildings so that the people who don't want such a neighborhood should move to suburbia.
Sorry but this sounds like a problem with City council not Chinese or foreign or Kenyan developers.
That's like saying corruption in America is not the fault of the business owners but only the sleazy politicians accepting the bribes. Yes, obviously all political leaders should enforce the laws and not accept bribes but to pretend like the problem isn't businesses offering bribes for a profit making scheme is absolute bullsh!t. They could just follow the existing laws and build according to the regulatory codes.
This is terrible and I hope the citizens stand up-City Hall officials should be ashamed! They are letting down their fellow citizens for their own greed!
The City is in charge of planning. The builders are in charge of building. If the city fails to plan then that is 100% the city's fault.
First of all, I'm surprised that a western media house would accept posting something about Africa without showing poverty or flies flying in someone's face. I guess the Chinese angle trumped the poverty angle.
2nd, The Chinese are involved as constructing companies, those projects that the Chinese companies are building belong to locals in Kenya who have hired and paid the Chinese contractors to build, they are not responsible for the city's masterplan.
There haven't been any flies on anyone's face unless these unwelcome invaders have brought along with them, lots of flies on their faces.
These are few Kenyans who feel that should live seclusively and Americans who don't want Africa to grow yet how many high-rise buildings are in USA. Yet poor Kenyans are supporting selfish individuals who want to see us in slums are circulate videos of dilapidated infrastructure. Let those who feel should not indulge with others to move to farther suburbs away from the CBD
And why can't the people who are keen on moving into those areas move further outwards to the areas you are pointing and asking Kilimanians to move to? Is Kilimani the only place these invaders can move to?
A ridiculous statement; The reason people want to move to these areas is because they want greenery, security and the cleanliness. All of which is now being eroded in the name of development. The government is effectively turning the whole city into one giant slum. The best solution is to build new cities away from Nairobi and get people to move there.
with your thinking, you want nairobi to be constructed bila adequate infrastructure then ikae like an upright slum.
If the Voice of America wants to broadcast stories that focus on "for freedom around the globe today," it doesn't have to leave the U.S. There's plenty of stories in the U.S that would highlight this. Housing, really? You want to discuss housing issues of another country halfway around the world? There are homeless encampments in every major city.
The fact that it happens in America doesn't mean they can't report from somewhere else.
Chinese watamaliza Kenya ngonjeeni mtaona, Wanakunja Kenya na dollars in maize bags at zero interest from their government and they pay our ill rotten brainless corrupt Kenyan leaders that are money hungry at every level. Shame on our leadership, very very wrong practices.
Lol. This kind of construction happens everywhere including here in the usa. Here in California they're building apartment blocks like crazy without really updating infrastructure. This is an issue all over the world not just in Kenya.
Those earings though😮!!!
Most African countries wish for this kind of rapid constructions and some Kenyans are here complaining of these developments. People will never stop from complaining.
I wish it were factories we were talking about. This is money laundering and such an economic model will come to a halt or already has....
@@Pmooli Very good point. If you have noticed, the Chinese are building elite legacy projects like the flooded roads or fake rich housing in Kilimani. Wherever they build, you know some level of corruption is involved.
Your idiocy must be certified 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😮
Have you ever heard of a concept called urban planning? The challenge facing most African countries is inability to plan and where there are plans, it is their I ability to resist the temptation of corruption. When you combine all that with the fact that most African bureaucrats and technocrats gave not lived in urban centres for more than a generation, then you end up with a bunch of educated but useless, corrupt fellows to run Govt programmes.
Even when they know what needs to be done, they still lack the culture and ethics to do it.
People are literally dying due to poor planning and you're busy posting ignorant comments like this? You are the people with a problem. There is nothing wrong with buildings and infrastructure, but even vitamins will poison you if you take too much of them.
Leave Chinese alone,if you don't see the beautiful changes we have in Nairobi, then you should plan to evacuate to any country who's standard of living matches your thinking!
Chinese don’t have a problem call ruto and his crownies
And so it goes on........
The Chinese companies are helping solve the problem of housing.
The issue of housing problems is everywhere.
Instead of blaming the developer they should engage the government and developers to find solutions to some of the issues they are facing.
Kenya needs the Chinese developers like any other African country.
After all the Chinese are investing in any country including the west
You misunderstand the problem. They have laws like any country regarding building regulations and infrastructure, which is always the responsibility of the developers who are making the profits. They are bribing politicians to not enforce those laws so they can make more money. They are preying on the widespread corruption and the people's inability to oust their politicians in order to ignore the laws that already exist. They could just follow the law and make a profit, but they know they can bribe and get away with it, so that's what they do to make even more money. Yes the government is responsible for its corruption, which is what is said in the clip, but you seem to not only want to absolve the bribers for the laws they are breaking but praise them as somehow helping the local population. That's bizarre, and I wonder if you would apply the same reasoning to companies that bribe politicians in the West to dump toxins into the water or construct buildings not up to code.
Power plants, sewage system, roads hospital, schools should be first then apartments
SEWAGE AND WATER PROVISION MUST BE PREREQUISITE IF WE ALLOW CHINESE TO BUILD HIGH RISE SES LIKE THAT.
Fake news
We need to rethink strategies of concerving the environment.I think the rate of construction in Nairobi will continue to pose dangers of sinking houses, earthquakes, flood disasters. It is high time we rethink city construction strategies. Otherwise the next 20 years we will wail and we will have nothing to savage. The mother earth is angry with us, we have failed her by our scrupulous means of geting rich and failing to understand the power it has in our livelihood.
She 100% right we are fed up whit building whit no plans
This is why journalism is a highly degraded profession. Any way to denigrate the Chinese gets a pass. The complaints in this video should be directed to the city administration, not to the contractors that are putting up the buildings. Chinese high-rise construction, or any construction around the world is stellar. A new low for VOA.
The construction is NOT the problem but those who are complaining. These people hate competition. The flooding did not start today. The blockage of drainage did not start today. It has always been there even before the Chinese came.
How can those who are complaining be a problem? They are complaining about a problem, unless you elaborate on how what they are complaining about is not a problem.
And, yes, I agree with you on one point. Developers are business people whose primary motive in being in business is to make money. The problem lies with the approving and regulatory authorities. They are corrupt.
@@georgeodhiambo598 the flooding and poor planning did not start today. These constructions did NOT start recently. They have always kept quiet. It is now the middle and upper class feeling their effects that they are now coming out. when we have had bad governments, these people have always kept away. Hon Raila Amolo had said this before but they always have been dismissing him as lord of poverty.
True they are complaining coz they are jealous, they don't have money to put those high-rise, and that's where the jealous is coming from, instead move out and leave those with money to develop Nairobi.
This, dear Kenyans, must be the ones that voted in Ruto.... tethered thinking 😢
@@abisaiamatalo2769 Who said they started today? We are not living in the past. The past is an encyclopedia for reference. It tells us where we did well, where we did badly and what we must stop doing as well as what we can do better.

To change our conditions, we must change our mindset. The mindset that has brought us into the present chaos cannot be the mindset that will get us out of it.
lol voice of America?? Colour me surprised 💀
That lady is stunning! ❤
She is right 👍
How can you build these kinds of buildings with no drainage or sewer systems? CORRUPTION IS THE MAJOR PROBLEM. GREED IS A MAJOR ISSUE.
Africa has enough land & countries should avoid the too many very tall residential high Chinese apartments for safety reasons.
Blame the government for not putting those amenities not the developer
OH NO corruption in Kenya! Please make documentaries of things we DON'T know
Let our Nairobi grow
Ask president and governor sakaja....live China out of this shit
Well, there are Kenyans waiting to buy the property and are very excited
The fact that there are Kenyans who are waiting to buy the properties and that they are very excited does not justify the process. Even a night mugger gets very excited when he spots his next victim walking towards him in some dark street.
What are you complaining about with those mud houses at Kariobangi south, Dandora and Njiru being residential accommodations for residents?
Voice of America of course😏
But developers must not only build but investigate on available environments to ensure health care and safety of residents! How do you develop large buildings without water sewage security roads services etc unless corruption is rampant norm?
But an Indian and Kikuyu contractors stole alot of cement and etc, etc, etc, until many buildings in Kenya had to collapse because of higher % of only sand used in concretes mixter
China is awesome.
The Chinese can't build anything without the APPROVAL of the Kenyan government. Kenyans should vote for different politicians.
Blame your country's government.
America propaganda against chinese is also in Africa !!!! while chinese are building solid infrastructures US is busy installing military bases in Africa as if this is what Africa want instead of solid infrasructures !!! Where are the US built infrastructures ? show me the buildings or airports ?
True
nothing is going to stop in fact 75 storey buildings coming soon.
Address your issues to the building authorities and the built environment experts not politicians and lobbyists.
I'm just looking at the woman.
POOR MANAGEMENT IN NAIROBI COUNTY
ROAD IS BAD TOO
It's amazing how many people don't even know how their government works but want to criticize someone else's. It's the responsibility of the private business owners, in this case the builders, to also build the infrastructure to accommodate their profit making venture, hence the need to BRIBE local officials to look the other way. If they weren't doing anything wrong they wouldn't have to bribe anyone for their ILLEGAL construction. Duh. The bulk of the blame, not ALL of the blame, always goes to the one making the most money in any criminal enterprise, except for maybe prostitution.
But even in that case they blame the Johns because they often have more money than the wh0res they are paying. On second thought, that's EXACTLY the same scenario as presented in this clip.
Chinese are okay. They are just playing by our actual rules.
She Should Be Calling Kenyan Government Corruption
Once saw a documentary on the Chinese in Africa. A Chinese man told a Africa guy to his face that his people were extremely lazy. 😂
But why bother, you will enoy decent accomodation, just do these 1,change your eating habbits to accomodate the sawage system in the area, 2,dicard cars and walk to work to accomodate narrow roads 3, take children to boarding schools to avoid rush hours during schools days with those above you will enjoy decent accomodation
Do you have to drag china to get a headline
Its stupid to say the chinese are building yet the owners of those projects are kenyans

The Chinese are property developers complying with your local guidelines! You don’t like see your local major in charge of planning n development
Let's not blame the Chinese someone gave the approval from the county government period, what we have in this current administration are gluttons.
This has nothing to do with the chinese but government
However anything involving the chinese will get exerggerated attention from western media
In Uganda the world Bank funded the construction of a channel that has caused an environmental catastrophe in parts of lake Victoria

The Chinese are just contractors. Who are the clients?
Put drainage and shut up.
Drainage is not the only factor to be considered in urban planning under a densification programme. You know nothing.
Putting and maintaining drainage and providing all the requisite services is the job of the government. The Chinese or any other developer has nothing to do with this. A city must grow and develop. Are we going to keep living in a city with old bungalows forever? I think not. Modern high-rise is the only way to go.
