    Hello Dave, good vlog, thnx. Just wondering: "Shooting in Aperture, Expose to the right, and then exposure compensation to left"? Why not shoot in Manual mode, you don't need Exposure compensation but you can dial directly to ETTR? Or am i wrong. BTW: with the D850 and the 70-200 F4, i always shoot F13. Way sharper than F8 or F9.

      Thanks for watching. Good question. Because manual is an inefficient shooting mode for landscape photography when there is enough light for the camera to meter the scene. Here's why ruclips.net/video/zGvhWeSiXeA/видео.html

    Dave, thanks for this video. Very good. I have a question...I purchased your video course where you setup the buttons on a Nikon D810 (I think that's correct). I purchased a D850 and want the same functions. Could you refer me to the video you prepared? --can't find it. Thanks in advance.

    Amazing photos and excellent tips.
    Man, I will be doing a road trip up in Oregon and Washington in July.
    I really want to see the Olympic National Park and the coastline. Heard some awesome cliffs there. You know of any good spots there I should stop by?

    Dave, have loved your tips and videos for several years. With RUclips there is an option for donating with Thanks $/Share the Love, where someone can donate to you. I know that your classes are the means by which you get $ for the hiking adventures you do, but I think a lot of people would be willing to do a one time donation (or more often.). Just a thought.

    I'm really looking forward to Tamron and Sigma getting the Z mount protocols; the Tamron 70-300mm is incredible. For those who want to avoid cropping. But yeah, that Nikkor Z 24-200mm is a real winner for adventure shoots in general!

    Hi Dave. I liked how you talked about your previous climb of Glacier Peak. Taking telephotos of previous routes and searching for new ones is how I got into landscape photography in the first place. I love fully exploring a certain area, like you said, so that each time you go opens new possibilities. "Oh . . . look at that ridge! I gotta go there!"

      Hey Gary, I answer questions each week for Pr Plus members of my Landscape Photography School. www.davemorrowphotography.com/upgrade-membership/ Otherwise, you're welcome to ask here & I may answer in it in a Q&A video. I don't answer questions via email. I would end up answering emails all day every day & no one else can learn if I answer via email.

      @@DaveMorrow I understand completely. Real quick. Have a canon 60d. I feel it is very soft focusing camera. Using a Tamron 16-300 as walkaround. I feel to get good focus I am going to have to use Live view and use the 10x button to enlarge to achieve good focus or should I just try hyper focal and see how that works. Tripod broken and at this point can't afford one. Do you have any suggestions on how to hand hold(ha ha) in live view and keep camera steady to get the focus i want. Really enjoy your videos and very jealous of your trips.

    Nice, thanks! Ps: You almost said it, but mirrorless cameras auto-focus better when the subject is brighter, so it’s worth setting your optimal exposure after you set your focus...I hope you tolerate fans making suggestions?

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  2 года назад +2

      Anytime! I partially agree. I think it has more to do with contrast. If the scene was pure white, zero autofocus. Pure black, none either. When there are contrasted details the algorithm can "see" those much easier and lock in. ETTR helps a ton with this. Like you said, the correct exposure helps with focus.

    Nice ! I've successfully photographed a lighthouse 8,3km away from me at 400mm and 1/10s on full frame DSLR. I got 1 sharp photo out of 7 attempts. Mirror lock-up, shutter on timer, IS off, tripod (of course) and I was leaning with my arm over the lens to further stabilize the setup

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! Wish there was a super light weight 400mm. I'd love to carry one. They are super fun to shoot. 1/7 is pretty good at that focal length.

Truly love your approach and your educational. Thank you!!

    You can go to around 300mm if you change to DX mode, will probably finish up with a similar result. Might be an interesting comparison.

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  2 года назад +2

      It effectively does the same thing, except the camera does the digital crop for you. I prefer to keep the FX version because then I have the outside edges if I need them... The results from the FX are actually a little bit better. Not sure why!

    One nice thing about Fujifilm X series cameras is that they have all the color channels in the histogram visible in live view before you take the picture.

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  2 года назад +1

      that's solid! Not sure why every camera doesn't have that. It's not like it's a hard thing to create.

    Yet another educational and entertaining video, Dave...NICELY done!
    What are your overall impressions of that 24-200 lens? Ever wish you'd gotten the 2.8 (ouch...spendy!) version for better low-light performance?
    Cheers!

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  2 года назад

      Thanks Neil. No I don't recommend a 2.8 telephoto for landscape photography. It's heavy, expensive and you really don't need below f/4. Might consider it for a wide angle for night sky stuff.

    • @neilmackey9626
      @neilmackey9626 2 года назад

      @@DaveMorrow Thanks, Dave...kind of what I thought. I have that same 24-200 and it suits almost all my purposes, at least on the landscape side of the aisle. But, you know some folks...they slam the "all-in-one" lenses as always missing something!
      Limited budget and currently exploring some F-mount lenses on an FTZii adapter for those more close-up low light situations.
      BTW...if you ever find yourself down Bend, Oregon way and you need anything...place to crash, logistical support, lol...roadside assistance...give me a shout. Be a pleasure to met you and give you a hand. VERY small payback for all the great stuff I've gotten from you over the years...

    • @neilmackey9626
      @neilmackey9626 2 года назад

      Hey, kind of a semi-related question...you ever use / recommend Auto-ISO? I turn it off (as well as VR) when shooting from a tripod but turn both back on when shooting handheld. Just curious as to your experience...

  • @draughonc
    @draughonc 2 года назад

    Always enjoy Dave. I find I have to overcome the atmosphere on my long lens. Increasing the shutter speed as much as possible, even on a tripod/ Given the distance you were at, couldn't you have shot at a wider aperture and still had your frame in focus? That would help get the shutter faster.

    • @DaveMorrow
      @DaveMorrow  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Chris. Good to hear from you! Took a few at f/8, f/11 & f/16. 16 Ended up being the best in this case for that focal length.
