Thanks man. I was taking forever doing the surround outside a new patio door and thought I might be doing something inefficiently. After watching this involving a minimum of 3 guys talking days for a whole house, I feel a lot better about myself
Hello Sheila, you're hunches or gut feelings are correct. No exterior is as maintenance free as stucco especially in hot weather areas. You will more than likely do well with your first home purchase as your research is showing. Kirk Giordano
My dad was a plasterer for about 40 years (1948-1988) and I worked as a hod carrier for him for a good 20 years. Much of what I did consisted of shoveling the mud onto the board, and moving the scaffolding around the house. And also mix all the mud using the gasoline-powered mixer. I did do some floating, but I regret that I never learned to spread, which I think would have been a good skill to pick up. We worked on many brand new houses going up in Southern California. I would work the entire summer vacation while in college, and end up making more money (adjusted for inflation) back in 1978 than I ever did in my later years working a more “regular” job.
Howdy Ernie, we all have regrets, unfortunately, those who say they don't haven't met them yet. Hopefully, they never will, but that's not being practical. Practical is if they live long enough, they will meet them. We're supposed to learn from those regrets, it's tough but it can be done as I do it sometimes. 🍻
I permanently framed in an old bathroom window and I need to stucco the gap on the outside to make it blend in with the old stucco. Going to give this a try next summer, your video was very informative thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Good for you my friend. Will keep learning. I'm 55 ready to retired from trucking because of a cancer treatment I'm under, but still eager to learn. Man I am going back into time to watch and learn, Kirk still Kirk....beautiful work of art. You to good to smart...as for your boys they are great kids.....Good tree produce good fruits.
I've been in the trade at least 16 years, a solid 9 years, lol. I didn't come up in the Union, but my Uncle did, here in Cali the Local 200, and in Las Vegas. Everything I know I learned from him, including lath, which is actually an entirely different union and a skill the Plaster Union doesn't train most plastereres. I have worked on a Union job and I am a union card holder having completed OSHA 30 and scaffold certs through Local 200. My entire experience tells me that everything stated in this video is absolutely kosher. I am impressed with this level of instruction. One question, though, you use the darby which is great, more and more companies are using only a rod, but I was trained to use the darby to make the wall and the rod to shave it. Do you shave the walls or only on Santa Barbra Mission finish maybe?
Howdy Jared, my fellow skilled master craftsman, thank you. I worked with the Union for many years. Then, in 1985, I got my C-35 plastering license and had a crew of about 10 to 15 men for nearly 20 years. So I have seen and done it all and then some. As far as rodding versus Darbying, it's a no-brainer. Why shave or waste good mud or stucco when, If one is skilled with a darby, that same mud is now used to strengthen the wall while keeping it true and plumb. Keep in mind, I worked as the front Darby man for a union crew that shot on average 10 houses per day, every day for years on end, 8 hours a day, every day. Thus, I have thousands of hours using a darby. All that being said, if a man prefers a wet two-by-four, a rod, or a stucco Darby, that's their choice.🍾
@@StuccoPlastering thats a lot of experience. I'm not sure why I think I can do stucco after watching a few videos, even if they are excellent! Looks like you're sharing some of the fun with family too. Thanks for sharing as always :)
Howdy Jared, a rod is okay if you're going to place thin bricks or tile on banks for example. However, this is only 1 out of 1,000 jobs if that. In the real world, a darby keeps the mud on the wall and distributes it evenly. For a Smooth finish any rod can be used, serrated or smooth. The two coats of finish hide any darby lines.🍾

Howdy DTOM, not sure why your question does not have a reply button under the comment, No worries I'll try to answer here. Your comment is based probably on your area in the country, but such is life. 1. Most states in this country use Galvanized weep or drip screed as they are better and stronger, when you galvanize the screeds it make them rust proof unless you scratch them. 2. I am using two ply paper which is spot glued to keep the sheets from separating, this is code countrywide since 1975. A third coat of paper is not necessary. 3. Technically only 7/8 of the staple leg has to go into the studs, when I was a lather we didn't have the luxury of lathing over plywood sheathing in the late 70's. On this project we used inch and a quarter crown staples to accommodate the plywood or in this case the T one -eleven siding. 4. We install J-trim here in California to commercial projects only, unless otherwise specked out in special plans, see some of our commercial plastering videos. 5. Does not apply here in california. 6. Expansion joints should be installed on any vertical or horizontal wall where there is no interruption of a window or door as these create the expansion needed here in Ca. 7. N/A read above codes based in Ca. Best wishes from Calif. Kirk and family

@@StuccoPlastering Hi Kirk, thank you for your response. I thought you might be using natural hydraulic lime (NHL) plus sand because of the way you are keeping the render hydrated. NHL needs to be kept hydrated to set, and results in a covering which is more sympathetic to the original structure of most UK houses (pre-WW2, relatively weak brick and lime/sand mortar) unlike cement which will crack with movement. However, unfortunately, the people who built those houses are now long gone and the use of lime is a dying art, resulting in accelerated deterioration ... Keep up the good work.
Evening Pritpal, indeed lime is dying here in the U.S.A. it was used much more In the UK where it originated. Evening lucky dowwg,, thank you brother, You first do the sill flashing, preferably with DuPont's FlexWrap it's a self adhered butyl flashing what helps prevent water intrusion at window and door sills, you would have to google this product to see how it works or some of my videos showing how we apply it, Can't or don't wish to go this superior method, no worries, this is in my opinion the best you do, however, you can still use either a paper membrane or a peel and stick at the bottom, then do the sides going over the bottom by a few inches, next install the window or door and use preferably a Z flashing on top and you're done. Best wishes, Kirk and family

Thats a nice finish, It's similar to our float and sponge finish here in the UK except we don't need 3 coats as its mostly masonary background's we have here. If i asked a customer to hose down their walls for two weeks they'd more than likely not bother continuing with the work tho.
Hello eagle empire music (EgEm), if its on a cinder block, brick or concrete walls we don't ask to hydrate the walls either, on wood homes the studs and sheer wall or plywood has a tendency to expand on hot days or when the extra weight is placed on wood homes this can cause additional settling, so hydrating is only necessary on wood homes. cheers, my fellow plasterers from the UK, Kirk Giordano

hi Kirk I love your videos they have given me the confidence to have a go at stucco and im pretty happy with my results. That said my projects to date have been covering up some unsightly cinder block walls as part of landscaping. Now i am about to tackle a painted cinderblock wall. My main problem is the painted wall has pinprick holes and when we have wind driven rain the water gets into the block and there are damp spots inside the house. I am trying to decide best course of action. either A. skim coat wall to float finish and then repaint - would i need a metal lath for this option or would i just need to waterblast painted wall remove loose paint and then apply bonding agent ? or B. do i need to lath the wall and complete 3 coat system ??? Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks John
Hi John McCarthym, easy question, apply an acrylic color finish. First Pressure wash the wall well, then roll on the primer, next hand apply the acrylic finish coat, these tend to last up to 20 years for being water resistant. I initially put some rubbery flex tape to cover the space and am planning to nail on the metal lathe (mesh) and add 2 layers of stucco and one layer of paint. I also plan to chaulk the outside edge next to the old stucco. My question: should I use the rubber flex tape, or do I need replace it some felt paper?

Kirk and family, greetings! Never get bored, never don't learn something new. Didnt know it is code to stucco over existing wood siding... so the staple must be about 2" long on the studs? Thank you for your videos. All the best to you and your family!
Evening Sung Joo Um, thank you, yes, you can go over most existing wood clad sidings including T One Eleven as long as it's in decent shape, of course any wood rot must first be removed and replaced . As far as the staple depth, way back when shear wall was not a code we had to use 7/8 staples, the fact still remains however thick the wood siding weather it's new plywood or existing wood 7/8 of the leg of the staple still has to go into a stud, staple lengths come in 7/8 to 2 inches. Hi Guys, your videos are extremely inspiring me. I've been struggling to find the right person to plaster couple of outdoor walls in a remote area in Eastern Europe. The walls are a mix of red bricks and dry mud bricks (old technique), but are solid walls. Since I am foreigner, I got ridiculous prices from the local builders. As usual they try to work 10 days per year and get the rest of the year doing nothing, in this part of the world. If I had the money they want I would give deposit for house in Uk instead of moving abroad. Anyway... I am little bit confused by so many techniques and materials and the fact I watched so many videos. I was thinking to use the galvanized mesh, no ply paper. Do you think is it the correct approach ? What kind of mortar mix would you suggest ? Sorry if the questions are dumb, but I really cannot afford any builder at the moment and I need to do the works before next winter. Thanks for your patience ! Really much appreciated all your hard job.
Howdy Walter Cista, no worries, you have the good and bad everywhere in the world not just your area. The paper ins necessary in order to waterproof, the stucco netting to hold the stucco, so unfortunately there are no shortcuts to a complete stucco system . My cement plaster is 3 times as much sand to 1 part cement plaster. Best wishes, kirk giordano plastering
Evening 11green11, sometimes a weep or drip screed to high which exposes the bottom of the plywood to moister, thus causing the wood to swell then rot. Or it can be no weep or drip screed, (different words same thing) and the home settles as this is quite normal, however the buckling is ugly as sin, Cheers, kirk giordano plastering

+geno melena vening Geno dude the fellow who said "he can water power wash and them roll on a bonding agent and then skim coat a smooth coat" is accurate, I go a step further and tell folks I can do this, then apply a santa barbara smooth mission finish on top of that skim coat. Some vinyl windows have a track around all four sides. The track is recessed lower than the rest of the main part of the vinyl window. Do you ever fill in that edge track with finish mud? It seems to me that the design is to cover the window with tape and leave the track open to accept the finish mud, however there are the drain holes which must not be plugged. If you do not fill in the track, then are you bringing your wall flush with the meat of the window and cleaning out the track or are you bringing the wall flush with the recessed line of the window track? Thoughts?
Morning Farmer Dude, weep holes on all windows must never be buried or plugged. I have found almost all have the water exit on the front, however I have seen a few with them under the bottom flange in these rare cases they still allow the proper depth of stucco without interfering. cheers, kirk & Jason’s home improvement teaching videos

Was thinking about using wood for a guide and covering that with chicken wire? What do you think that will turn out to look like? Ive never worked with stucco lol
This is such a wonderfully thorough video. Quick question - when you say to hydrate 2 days before second coat, then 28 days before color coat, does that mean that every single day (both 2 day and 28 day period) the entire wall needs to be saturated every single day then also right before applying the next coat? You guys are awesome, thanks!
@@Linneaandakela Hello Linnea, excellent question, the idea is when you saturate new stucco with water, it expands then when dryer conditions return it shrinks or develops hairline cracking. This is normal, then the second coat covers the first. Now when you hydrate that coat a few times, it may do the same or sometimes it does not as the first coat has added the structural and lateral strength. Now, your question, how much more should you hydrate the brown or second coat before you wait the two weeks or longer before the color coat? I recommend at least two more times, why? So that you add weight and hydrate the base coat professionally. Why? What happens if you don’t hydrate the base coat that is so critical? Good question. Say for example you apply the color coat and love the finish and don’t notice any hairline cracking. This would be normal. However time goes by and now it’s winter, the rain are heavy and saturate your brand new colored wall surface’s when that rain now drys, this will cause cracking in the base coat which will telegraph through you color finish, thus creat the expanding and constricting before the rains. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano Plastering.
Kirk, Thanks for the Vids. Very informative! Would you recommend control joints on a two story gable wall say 25ft by 25ft? I'm getting my exterior wall redone. I hear it's good to put a horizontal joint at the second floor and generally do them every 10 feet. With that said none of the houses around here ever have them and the house is 95 years old. It does take practice and involves a few folks. I won't try and do it myself either.

You can do it! 👨🏻🏫
Good for you my friend. Will keep learning. I'm 55 ready to retired from trucking because of a cancer treatment I'm under, but still eager to learn. Who knows, I might need to do something on my house later :) and still eager to live!!! I'm giving a good fight to this rare type of cancer. They called it Urachal Cancer. First God, I'll be here for a while. The first Doctor gave me a month to live, that was on march of 2016. Thank God I'm still here. And will be till God desires something else. Be safe. Live longer and enjoy what you do and enjoy your family!!!!
Thank you, we become what we think about most, best wishes
I worked one summer in LA doing this with my brother, I went in the Marine Corps because it wasn’t as much work. This was almost as bad as chopping cotton or pulling Tobacco. I can tell you doing this work is difficult and he makes it look easy.
Good day, Abby, I hear you brother, I think accountants have a tough job as they have to sit down all day and work with numbers. Little oxygen is delivered to the brain and usually in a closed up stuffy building.

Kirk, is the BEST IN THE WEST! I give him five stars!
Howdy Edsel, man, I like your style, thank you.
@@PaulHitchingsWorks Howdy Paul, we too can have some fun while working. 🥳

Bringing Plastering tips to the world, via RUclips Video
I did do a video on lime plastering, When done it was 4 hours long so we had to edit it to an hour or no one would have watched it, even an hour is a long time.

Chica Romero my dad is black and is a mason
Evening lucky dowwg,, thank you brother, You first do the sill flashing, preferably with DuPont's FlexWrap it's a self adhered butyl flashing what helps prevent water intrusion at window and door sills, you would have to google this product to see how it works or some of my videos showing how we apply it, Can't or don't wish to go this superior method, no worries, this is in my opinion the best you do, however, you can still use either a paper membrane or a peel and stick at the bottom, then do the sides going over the bottom by a few inches, next install the window or door and use preferably a Z flashing on top and you're done.

Thats a nice finish, It's similar to our float and sponge finish here in the UK except we don't need 3 coats as its mostly masonary background's we have here. If i asked a customer to hose down their walls for two weeks they'd more than likely not bother continuing with the work tho.
Hello eagle empire music (EgEm), if its on a cinder block, brick or concrete walls we don't ask to hydrate the walls either, on wood homes the studs and sheer wall or plywood has a tendency to expand on hot days or when the extra weight is placed on wood homes this can cause additional settling, so hydrating is only necessary on wood homes.

hi Kirk
I love your videos they have given me the confidence to have a go at stucco and im pretty happy with my results.
Plus they don't require being painted for 30 or more years.
Best wishes and have a Fantastic New Year!

Great video. Thanks. I have to stucco about 3 inches around some newly installed windows, because the existing stucco was removed in order to install the windows. It is mostly wood around the window.

Evening Sung Joo Um, thank you,
yes, you can go over most existing wood clad sidings including T One Eleven as long as it's in decent shape, of course any wood rot must first be removed and replaced .

Nice advertising tho and the videos are really educational i suppose. You seem like a nice boss for real. And ive never heard of union pay lol. Most people around my way in this line of work are ex cons and were not offered scale pay.
Kay Schmitt Hi Kay, this trade is not for everyone, If a fella does not like working hard or getting filthy, plus investing a bit of time, they won't enjoy plastering.
thanks for watching and have a fantastic day!

your a good teacher of your skill thank you and god speed
Howdy Lincoln, thank you my friend.🍻

Tnx mate !
no worries,

Thank you for your thorough video ! I have a quick question. What causes the stucco at the bottom of a wall to bulge out over say, 3o years or so ?
Evening 11green11, sometimes a weep or drip screed to high which exposes the bottom of the plywood to moister, thus causing the wood to swell then rot.
Or it can be no weep or drip screed, (different words same thing) and the home settles as this is quite normal, however the buckling is ugly as sin,

hello Sir you helped me once before on some advice and it really helped out..
I have another question.
I am hire a stucco contractor to redo my stucco on my house. right now my current house has a knocked down finish of stucco and I want to put a super smooth finish on it place..
can they go over it or do they have to sandblast it and then go over it?
one stucco guy said he can water power wash and them roll on a bonding agent and then skim coat a smooth coat
another stucco guy said he has to sandblast it then skim coat
+geno melena vening Geno dude the fellow who said "he can water power wash and them roll on a bonding agent and then skim coat a smooth coat" is accurate, I go a step further and tell folks I can do this, then apply a santa barbara smooth mission finish on top of that skim coat.
Best wishes,
Kirk Giordano
I have found almost all have the water exit on the front, however I have seen a few with them under the bottom flange in these rare cases they still allow the proper depth of stucco without interfering.

weird question, I am designing a lizard enclosure and want to make a stucco "rock" ledge. I want it to look natural with large ledges and crevices for hiding. Any tips? Was thinking about using wood for a guide and covering that with chicken wire? What do you think that will turn out to look like? Ive never worked with stucco lol
Howdy, this would work you're only limited by your imagination,

Kirk,
Thanks for the Vids. The other walls are in pretty decent shape considering they are so old but they are smaller and better protected from the weather. I'm in northeast US.
Also, have you ever used that drainage mesh material between paper and lathe? Thanks again for the great videos!
Howdy Kevin, it's a good idea to add the expansion joints.
no, I have not used the rain screen.

Great job guys!
Hello, thanks for sharing your video. I'm in the process of buying a home in south Florida. I saw a 1926 spanish wood/stucco house. it's not a ground level home.Is it worth buying this kind of house?? I'm a little confused because I like the house but don't know if this type of house will require a lot of maintenance in the future, and the termites? I need some advice!! I just don't want to end up putting a lot of money into this home.
Hi Peace dude, based on what you wrote, I have no clue if it's a solid or crappy investment, sorry.
Best wishes and have a Fantastic day!

Hey Giordano, great videos love them and I am learning a lot. We have a 50 year old house with stucco on the top part and wood siding in the middle down to the parging. What i would like to do is take off the wood siding, apply a skim coat to the entire wall(s) and then apply a finish coat. Could you please give me some advice as to how to go about the steps.
Thank you appreciate any input.
Joe Saccomanno
Evening Joe,
the word parge is similar to stucco more it's more like concrete.
I believe what you're asking is how to feather in or tie in stucco to whatever material in on you wall?
The video below may help show how this can be done.
If not I would have to see what you have to work with.
Best wishes,
kirk and family

I enjoy watching professionals in the building trades who have the experience and skill to make a job look easy. A question though; I noticed the vents as you were applying the brown coat and I wonder if it might have been a good idea to have them taped over or covered somehow
Evening Pat, not necessary or worth the time it takes as they wipe clean quickly when the stucco is dryed, as stucco does not set to this type of metal unless etched by many coats left on them.

+Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. Thanks. I have some experience painting, which caused me to raise the question. Better just to watch and learn. There is no substitute for experience and I'm sure that plenty of RUclipsrs get all fired up and enthused about tackling such projects and other projects in the building trades themselves, only to find that the reality of the labor involved and their inexperience is a harsh awakening. Nevertheless, the temptation to proceed is great and I can't help but think that a methodical, well prepared approach might yield acceptable results. If the results are disastrous, well then one could always call the professionals on RUclips for a rescue.
You my friend speak like a poet instead of a painter well said my educated friend.
