yeah, but people are also fucking idiots who only seem to hear parts and leap to conclusions.
literally, over a hundred people i've talked to, didn't get that the planet situation was no man's sky ish, that the whole planet was viable.
and there's also plenty of people that seemed to think this was going to be more like no man's sky or minecraft, just a lot of creative space with no bethesda charm, instead of basically having more handcrafted stuff than skyrim and fallout 4, but then also nms kind of space on top of that, so it's not one or the other.

What they showed was not good. Procedural generation is capable of so much more especially on a PC. However, to be fair what they showed was a long time ago. I've seen much better concept art for alien planets so wasn't impressed at all in the overall design choices. But as I said it was quite awhile ago so hoping they wow us at launch.

tbf they didn't have 1000 big ass planets worth of space to try to cover, too.
there just isn't a good way to do that with the kind of saturation of content bethesda's usually good for.
and imo, that's fine - make a lot of shit, and have that with the nms freedom.

My biggest question about Starfield is, we know we can land and explore anywhere on a planet, so does that include the oceans? And If its only land exploration then what about the planets that are over 70% coverd in water? You see, I believe there might be underwater exploration in Starfield. If they are procedurally generating entire planets then they probably have to generate entire Oceans too on oceanic planets. Below are a few reasons why I believe this is the case(I could be totally wrong)....
    1. 'Neon' one of the major cities in Starfield is right in the middle of an ocean. It will feel pretty weird if we are not able to explore the outskirts of a major city in a BGS game. A game which is all about exploration.
    2. If you remember, in Fallout 4, one third of the map was all water for no reason at all on which BGS later confirmed that there were a lot of underwater cut content including a BioShock style underwater vault with a giant mutant octopus lurking in its vicinity, and whole lot more which were later data mined. All of it went to the cutting floor for reasons not disclosed (probably because of technical or time limitations back then). So, they tried to do a lot of underwater content in Fallout 4 back then and they were clearly interested. Naturally, this makes me wonder.

One of the big things that modders need to start begging Bethesda I think in the future, especially when ESVI comes out in the future with its mod tools, is they needs to give us better Procedural Generation Tools (that looks like its handcrafted) for building landscapes, dungeons, etc. from scratch. The tools we got in the past were not the best out there so most of the work has to be done by hand still, which frankly takes way too much time for community based projects (look at Skyblivion, Skywind, Beyond Skyrim for example, those projects have been in the works for over 10 years now and nowhere near done yet) and using AI for creating the 3D assets for making the worlds and NPCs. At this point, those mods should be full on standalone games frankly. The reason I point this out, is the community going to have the same patience once those projects ever finish to do another community mod remake of Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and 4 etc., to take 10-15 years for another remake? So far we do have the patience right now because we never got substantial remakes of these games before or significant mod content to play these but I think in the future, we definitely need to be looking into Procedural Generation more to creating massive landscapes and then go in and tweak them by hand. The way they are going about making these landscapes takes far too much time (I know the handcrafted is the best, but people don't have years and years they want to wait for one big mod to come out, we need to consider making these kinds of mods in far less time than it takes right now so that so much backbreaking work doesn't need to be done and can be a simple process to get it done in say 2-3 years). I fear a second go around of these kinds of remakes, we'll be stretching in the 2040s by the time these things even see the light of day, do you really want to wait that long?

Not expecting plants as I'm sure Goldilock planets are rare but they could have had interesting mineral planets and hazardous planets with lava or corrosive atmosphere. The planets need to be interesting even the dead ones. Save barren landscapes for most moons. They need to get some real SciFi concept artists to show them what alien planets can look like with interesting natural architecture. Oh, and atmosphere and weather effects should be interesting too. Tornados, dust storms, electrical storms, electro magnetic storms, ice storms. Maybe strange aurora lights, ball lightning, gas fires, etc. There are so many things you can implement procedurally into the planets. Witcher 3 did it much better. Whiterun has like 10 houses and it's supposed to be a big city. Same for Solitude. Or any other city in Skyrim. The way BGS like to make their games creates certain strings in some aspects and game mechanics. Plenty of loading screens (every city in Skyrim is basically split in 2 - LOD/world cell) and problematic implementation of any vehicles.
Skyrim came out more or less at the same time as Battlefield 3. It was outdated in everything before it even came out. But they managed to create an atmosphere and theme exactly as it should be for that game to succeed.
Radiant AI has become a meme over the years. In Oblivion it was funny at least. In Skyrim less so but in Fallout 4 it was a complete disaster (try to build settlements in F4 and assign your settlers to any job/bed)
But of course the only game better than TES V will be TES VI. It's impossible to compare TES to any other game. Same as the only game better than W3 will be W4 imo.

Because I still remember seeing leaked images of concept art for TES V and pictures of new races and such and waiting for TES V to come out only to find out that it's many times better than expected. Frankly I don't believe that any game deserves the title ''best game ever made'' because its always about preferences. We are all different and what is a great game for me might be less interesting to others.
It would be a different story if we compare games by their tech and accomplishments achieved by maxing out potential of current tech. But even that would have different titles to be crowned with different years of release. TES V is being supported by the modding community to this date almost 12 years later with several tens of thousands mods and mod downloads counting in billions .

Let's not forget the power of Bethesda's Radiant Systems to give life to these thousand worlds. Will Shen has said that they can populate a radiant location with entire *structures* and major events, which means that over time there could be an *accretion* of various radiant locations on the same planet.
So think of like this: when your character is level 1, every planet starts as a blank slate with maybe only a few permanent locations, say the average is 3 -- exploring into the dark would certainly feel rather lonely. But then everytime you initiate a quest, some planet somewhere gets populated with a Radiant Location. You then visit that planet, and other random locations and events begin populating as you explore it. Say you establish an Outpost, which then produces its own local radiant quests for things like rescuing kidnapped Settlers or whatever.
By the time you've fully explored the planet, it's gone from a barren wasteland with only 3 locations, to a bustling hive of activity with more than a dozen locations, filled with skirmishes and hidden bases and all sorts of intrigue.
Then multiply that by a thousand.

Especially around downtown.
Few of the most popular small mods (Scrap Everything/Spring Cleaning) are causing so many issues that creators of sim settlements even advised against using them even without use of SS mod.
Basically any mod that disables precombines can and will break worldcells and LODs (you might have seen this if you ever modded F4 and had weird 2D buildings popping out)
SF will suffer similar issues I am afraid since Bethesda didn't move on from Creation Engine.
And what's even worse is that this time it may not even take any mod to create a mess in world cells. I mean planets ? 1000 planets ? I hope I am wrong about this but I have a bad feeling....
I am not sure what would be worse - having some ground vehicles in a Bethesda game where most probably it would cause a lot of CTD while driving it or no ground vehicles at all so the game won't crash but you as a player walking the entire planet on foot.

@@andreassk I don't see how any of this pertains to Starfield. F4 is 8 years and a major engine overhaul ago. I think the fact that Creation 2 can render 1000 planets is a testament to its optimization.
As for drivable vehicles: horses, dragons, and Vertibirds don't go significantly faster than sprinting, so I don't expect Starfield to break the mold. Slower character speeds are simply less taxing on the engine. Do more with less.

@@botmes4044 It would take a lot of optimism for me to believe that any Creation Engine overhaul will make any difference. It is still a Gamebryo engine, the same as it was in TES 3. You might think that 8 years is a lot for a game developer and its tools to evolve but sadly Bethesda didn't. IDK for what reason they wont swap to a proper next gen engine. It's not about money I am sure.
Look what Unreal engine can do. Or unity. Look at what CIG managed to create in Star Citizen....those are some proper tools imo. BGS isn't even hiding these facts. AS Todd said - no loading free landing and game most probably being locked at 30 FPS for consoles.
My goal is not hating the game but to calm the hype that often leads to disappointment. Don't expect it to be the ultimate game of the games because it simply won't be. Though I am sure it will be a great game and if there isn't any major disaster (like with F76) it will be played for years to come and supported by countless mods. (hope its gonna be mods drama free this time)

@@andreassk No offense it's no just gamebryo, also ANY who says "move on from CE" doesn't know tech nor games.. If CE is so replaceable why hasn't ANYONE made a FO OR TES competitor??? Name another engine not named SlipSpace (343 industries engine which is only MP maps) that can do mods on console??
You guys seem to not understand UE is OLDER than CE by like 6 years, and YES let's look at what UE can do?? Not make a TES or FO competitor while being free and older... It LOOKS nice but has VERY limited interactivity, RPG ability even to this day is Mass Effect one.. I was hoping Avowed would do it but they actually use UE but it's with a in house engine plug in for the RPG mechanics so that doesn't count.. Yes besides visuals what CAN it do better than CE??? Do tell??
CIG took TWELVE YEAR'S to get the game to simply be stable and it STILL doesn't have a game let alone a game with a console version that's modable.. The fact your trying to criticize Bethesda yet show ANY type of praise for a company that's lied more than Todd Howard has in 5 games over 25 years.. Vs thier ONE game in a decade is honestly baffling.. Thier engines terrible, and basically sacrificed a game trying BUILD UP to the creation engine.. Why do you think NO companys made a "AAA RPG" to scale as they do?? Cause without CE the best RPG you'll get is Witcher 3.. Which is yes or no replies, no depth on NPCs, set characters, basically a Action Adventure game with "RPG elements"..

My guess is that Will Shen was speaking imprecisely. I believe that every planet is first procedurally generated. Then the planets are procedurally populated with various POIs. Then each planet is given special attention by the artists to handcraft them as needed. I highly doubt that your Kreet and my Kreet will be different. That would be very strange. Now the sim could be reactive. For example, if I join the Crimson Fleet and successfully do missions for them in a non-aligned area of space, then a byproduct of that could be a dynamically populated presence of the Crimson Fleet. That could be in the form of a pirate base appearing somewhere or maybe some shady characters appearing where there were none previously. But I doubt that Space FedEx is going to give you a mission to deliver medicine to some space orphanage on a desolate world and some village suddenly gets created on the fly where non had existed previously.
