    I'm always surprised, when the cost of operating a ship is so high, why shipping companies tend to be such skinflints when it comes to crew comforts like decent and free WiFi. It must be a practically insignificant cost in the scheme of things.

    • @notroll1279
      @notroll1279 2 года назад +3

      Until very recently ago, charter rates were below the full cost to maintain a ship. Many cargo ships were therefore scrapped, which lead to a reduction of the supply. Ship owners who survived that period financially are doing fine again now but it is a hugely cyclical business that can go sour again in a few years. I'd keep a lid on costs if I were in that business...

    The ones running Suez and Panama canals know pretty much the cost of going all the way around, and set their prices accordingly. Fuel goes up, fees follow. They know they have the worlds ocean traffic in a solid grip. You think it's too expensive? Oh, you are welcome to take another route.
    If the north west passage will be ice free every summer in the future and considered a free or low cost water way, they might have to adjust the fees.

      Letting the Egyptians and the Panamanians nationalize the canals was an incredibly large mistake. Letting two unstable countries - in possible war zones - control the two biggest trade bottlenecks is beyond risky.

    A few years back, I took a cruise from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale via the Panama Canal. They said that the cost was $500,000 approximately using the old Panamax locks. The shorter route saves fuel and 10 days time. The ship is then available to load cargo and be under way about 10 days earlier. By now a ship taking the longer route is a week from arriving in port. The canal allows the ship to work harder in a year and make more trips and more money.

    Eleven days of time saved for a container ship is time lost not carrying other loads. That has a price too.

    • @wxlidfnb
      @wxlidfnb 2 года назад

      That's basically what the charter price accounts for no?

    • @BradHouser
      @BradHouser 2 года назад +4

      @@wxlidfnb No. It is more than that. As an example. Let's say you make $10 million profit per trip from A to B and it takes 2 months. So in a year, you make 6 trips or $60 Million. If you could cut the time in half, you could make twice as many trips with the same ship, and make $120 million a year. That is like having a free ship. The charter cost for a year for one ship is the same, but the returns are higher. By taking the shorter route you increase your capacity.

    • @wxlidfnb
      @wxlidfnb 2 года назад +1

      @@BradHouser I guess you can look at any operational savings as a reinvestment opportunity, which makes it potentially worth more. Any money not spent on something (anything) could be spent chartering more boats and thus increase capacity without increasing the amount of working capital.

    Time is money isn’t it Chief? I used to drive 18 wheelers in the US for a few years. When I had my own truck, I did trip planning the same way, especially if I was running from North Carolina to Boston. The North East corridor can get pricey with road tolls, especially NJ&NY. Back 20 years ago, it cost $20 to cross one bridge. I usually took a little longer route but came out way cheaper than forking out 60-70 per trip (2 a week) just for tolls. My loss in time and fuel consumption was no where near the loss of money just in tolls. Much love to you Chief.

    As always, Capt, love your videos! Simple economics. While in the Navy as a nuclear power plant operator, we left Livorno, Italy, out the Straights of Gibraltar, south along Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, north along Africa to the Indian Ocean in 18 days. Being nuclear, we ran flank 24/7. We then basically putted in circles until we went off the coast near Iran in support of Operation Eagle Claw (Iranian Hostage rescue attempt). We were a refueling platform via HIFR-Helo In Flight Refueling, for the RH-53's the Nimitz took in as we left Italy that went in, but didn't make it back. I was on the USS Texas (CGN-39).

      @@Odin029 I'm from Canada and I really hope that it won't happen. However, there's international pressure to take away the environmental control of the passage from Canada and make it "free for all".

      The challenges are ice and also a lack of detailed underwater charting through much of the passage, meaning ships could easily run aground. It would cut the transit time from Asia to northern Europe dramatically. The primary environmental concerns are the effects of black carbon coating the ice, decreasing the albedo, leading to increase ice melting and less sunlight being reflected from Earth, and also the complete lack of equipment to handle emergency situations such as spills.
      Some ships are already transiting the Arctic along the Russian coast during late summer and early fall, which saves over a week of sailing. While it saves Suez fees, and avoids piracy around the Horn of Africa and the Straits of Malacca, I do believe the Russians charge a fee for the nuclear ice breakers that escort the ships.

      @@durgan5668 Sorry to disappoint. Penguins are only found south of the equator and most around the Southern Ocean, neighboring land and Antarctica with the Galápagos penguins being the biggest outlier.

    could you give us a calculation of what it is costing a shipping company to sit at anchor in CA. There must be a cost to have their generators running, plus their lost time due to no new cargo on the ship. So how much do they loose if they can't move along and take on a new cargo? (sitting still mean no profit I would think) They must also have to pay their crew while sitting there.

    While I was on a Destroyer on the US Navy we passed through the Panama Canal 3 times. Just before Granada was invaded we waited on the west side just in case we were needed and could have started through without waiting in line. We were not needed so as soon as the Students were evacuated we headed north to San Diego, CA which was our home port. If we had gone through I would have ended up going through 5 time's in 2 years.

    • @joncalon7508
      @joncalon7508 2 года назад +1

      Frankly, given the state of the environment, I hope that rate is never calculated, and passages are denied. Canada does not have the resources in the arctic to accommodate vessels passing through the Northwest Passage in case of emergencies, fuel spills, ports, etc.
