In my experience its always been the valve that leaks where the 2 pieces of fabric meets the plastic. I cant find a nice solution to fix it, I'm sick of waking up on a flat mat but not ready to throw a £120 sleeping mat away. Certainly not in the market to buy another with the same design either.
It would have been interesting to see him do the soap test again after the repair. Patching fabric is very finicky and a larger leak simply gets reduced to a slow leak. It will just take a little longer for the mattress to collapse.
We need a mattress that can easily be field repaired. Polyurethane coated nylon fabric like on Alpackarafts would be great for this. I patch my packraft with gorilla tape, and it sticks all season long without leaking.
I bought your self-inflating mat, hardly used it, after a year and a half I inflated it and it swelled, the inner part came unstuck from the outer, is it possible to fix this somehow, thank you.
I have a SIM that self inflates when the air is vully expelled and the valve is closed. It turns out I have lots of fine holes in the top panel. It looks like general degradation. Can I do anything to seal the entire mat?
The problem with this is that I've never had a puncture like this. Mine is used indoors and is left with the valve open when I'm away and not using it. I've had a normal inflatable mattress and now an Outwell Deepsleep. The inflatable leaked around the join between two pockets and the repair just kept breaking. The Outwell is on the seam next to the valve so it's on a corner as well. I'm hoping it can be repaired successfully as it's only about a year old and I really like it.
@@johnbaker1643 It's a while ago now and I don't need to use it now but this is what I did. I used a repair kit, or maybe 2 different ones. Some are just self adhesive others have glue with them. I think I put just a little contact adhesive on the actual hole but I'm not sure. After putting the patch on the problem is, as it not a nice flat area the patch obviously doesn't lay flat either. I then put adhesive around the edge to stop it lifting. It's not neat and tidy but it did work. Unfortunately I got another puncture but I couldn't find where it was. If you have an idea where it might be then a small bowl of water will show it up. If not then spraying it all over or putting it in water is the best option. Not so easy in a small flat with a shower.
Exactly and I have an Outwell Matt..... with a leaky valve..... it worked great the first three days then all of a sudden the Matt looses pressure..... and mine was a new matt... I tried putting a piece of rubber band inside the valve cap to seal it properly when closing it ( I did this on the go in the field... without having an actual rubber seal ) .... didn’t work though!

"how to patch a self-inflating mat: use a patch"
And how do you fix the valve?!
But what if it IS the fabric attached to the valve. Vango have a history of this.
have the same problem, have you found a solution for this?
what is the sticker? And how long will just a sticker last vs a perm solution/patch?
This isn't much use .. where do I get one of those patches? Why would you not mention that key bit of info ?!!!
Indeed!
What if it is the valve?
How to repair the seam on the side of the matress??? Glue? Ducktape?? Or have it sealed? If so: how & where?
What patch did you use for the patch to the fabric?

I have outwell sleeping double 3.0 cm and it has a leaky valve. it's brand new . Don't know how to fix this

surely just as easy to use a spray bottle with soapy water?
Your valves are a joke!!!
That doesn't make sense. The problem with a self inflating mat is that it is taking in air when not in use, not losing it
That's why he says you need to over inflate it. You can then find the hole as air will be on its way out rather than in.
