If you really wanna know why it’s so popular is because it’s the only garbage left in the thrift shops after all the sweaty grailed incels dig through the bins at 3AM
I’ve been seeing this most heavily on kids up to like 21-22 years old in my area. It’s like they started to all dress in the exact same “ironic” style at some point, but sometimes I get the sense that they don’t even know it was supposed to be ironic because they’re so far removed from the original look that they couldn’t even really understand that? It’s like they all showed up one day wearing short shorts, faded tank tops, and bass pro shop hats, then all got mullets, then just kept going deeper and deeper and now they all are just 19 year old kids that look like undercover DEA agents from Florida in the 1970s and that’s just who they are. But they aren’t. But they are. There’s no bit here honestly, I feel like it’s just this phenomenon where kids in their teens and early 20s are so starved for new ideas because styles and trends cycle so quickly now that they end up mining from the weirdest shit from the past and lean into it full force , and it’s just getting weirder because there’s like nothing else left for them to mine from. I dunno I’m fucking lost
I think ironic fashion is becoming popular because we're becoming more and more afraid of being honest with ourselves. it's much easier to mock something that's ugly and act as if it isn't or to delve into post-irony and actually try to make it work. the problem is you can't "ironically" wear something, you're gonna feel the drain of your bank account when you buy 500 dollar crocs and strangers are gonna look at you funny because you dress funny. if nobody gets the joke, then there's no point in saying it. it's all fun and games to go "haha, isn't this shirt so dumb, wouldn't it be funny if i wore it", but if you consistently wear that shirt for over 4 hours a day, then you're no longer being ironic, you're being sincere. you're sincerely dressing up in a stupid way.
I started wearing shit ironically because I was tired of the fashion scene and how saturated it was so I wanted to make fun of it. And now it’s a trend. I can’t escape.
Now my new wave is to look like I just threw the fit together with no correlation but still aware of fashion nuances. Not even trying to be ironic anymore just tired of fashion period.
Bruhhh the other day I was browsing through Walmart’s clothes for the first time in probably 10 years and I came across this graphic tee with a Rottweiler and Doberman in front of all these lightning bolts with the words “Back Off” in AC/DC font and I’ve never impulsively purchased something so quick in my life. Ironically enough, I’m literally wearing that shirt rn…

My dad has recently found his old "Game Over" t-shirt and has been wearing it non-stop around the house along with his other ironic shirts combined with his 2 pairs of crocs I think my dad gets ironic fashion more than I do
@@yungturonsauce nah I think the early 2000s is the most trendy rn. It's like all the fashion kids are wearing predominantly y2k/mcbling stuff out in public. Even the ironic stuff is a callback to the mid 2000s/2010s. That's just what I pick up from seeing irl fadhion people tho, so I might be wrong.
Definitely, plus they miss how they felt about themselves/life when that stuff was originally popular - when people say “I miss the old ____” it’s almost always about how much they loved their own life at that time and how they had a lot less adulting to do then
@@yungturonsauce that's not exactly true everything is just going much faster. Like trends instead of lasting a season they last 1 month, which is barely enough for people to aknowledge it and get on board .
I use to wear a lot of ironic clothes (especially shirts) years ago because I was able to find them for cheap and it was kind of fun finding something tasteful, funny and nostalgic, but the quality to those shirts were usually garbage and they looked like trash fast & would shrink after a few washes (I wash cold and hang dry by the way) either that or rip and fall apart easily. These days I am way more interest in the quality of the materials, the stitching, where it's made & how it's made, then I examine the fit & silhouette as well as the colour and design. I gravitate towards work wear, skater inspired clothes (not necessarily skate brands because a lot of those are made shitty too) and casual mens dress wear, because I'm skater who works construction and performs music live. I'll take cohesiveness, fit, functionality and style over bullshit trends any day of the week.
I have a core memory. Back in 2019 my parents took me to a crocs store. I so desperately wanted the lighting mc queen crocs that I was willing to fit my feet into the shoes that only came in younger child sizes because that’s the only sizes they had (I was 16). I told them they fit perfectly (they didn’t). I walked out of that store feeling like a king until we got to the car and they realized I was struggling to take them off. They had to walk my happy ass back into that store and I was forced to switch to a croc size that fit but wasn’t cool. No lighting Mc queen crocs. I was heartbroken
As someone who frequents thrift stores, I think part of the reason for this rise in “ironic fashion” is definitely the thrift effect. Whenever I go to the local Goodwill looking for something to actually style, I just end up flipping through the funny t-shirt aisle and buying some goofy printed shirts I find because they’re so cheap and so funny. My favorite is a navy blue shirt with the words “THERE’S NO CRYING IN KICKBALL” printed in bold on the front. I think a lot of other people are starting to catch on to this trend as well. I mean, look at how thrift stores came into popularity in the first place. There’s a sense of half-way irony in trying to create genuinely fashionable outfits from inexpensive finds at a thrift store. But people soon realized that the “irony” trend of shopping at the thrift store actually has longevity. And then, as all things do in fashion, the trend is drawn out to the highest extreme, thus leaving us with Balenciaga Crocs and Minecraft shirts intertwined into the genuine fashion scale of today.
Definitely, also because of the pandemic If you notice theres been along of "aesthetic" categories now like the twilightcore, kidcore, cottagecore, ect. Compared back then when theres literally only like goth, emo, tomboy, girly, ect. I think where in this point where the trend cycle is super fast now which is bad because it can lead to overconsumption.
