I have the pleasure of attending Schipas farewell recital in1965 at Geary theatre. What a wonderful pure voice with power. After singing at opera house in the 1920's, he was noted for going to North Beach (SF)& singing all the popular songs in Italian & Spanish too, as he was half Spanish. My uncle heard him in different restaurants. He said Schipa just loved to do this!!!🙏
A voice need not be powerful; the power comes from the ability of the singer to capture the spirit of the song. Schipa excels in every way possible. Let's just sit back and enjoy. You don't hear this kind of singing today.
+Shlomo Hoffert I agree Schipa did not have a large voice, but Gobbi said one could hear his finest pianissimo right at the back of the Opera House. Henry Webb
I'm doing a wedding this weekend and the great mother is a 95 year young italian woman. So I thought I would surprise her with this video compalation. Best her soul ;-)
hi!, I didn't know these songs. these napolitanas are very beautiful. I like Tosti's compositions. Schipa is not much known to me, so thank you for sending it to me!! : )
Tenors like him (tenore di gracia) don't exist anymore. The technique simply got lost in time. It's a singing that comes from the heart. It requires sensibility and taste that are impossible to spawn in modern times. A pity, because you can find lots of singers with more technique and more powerful voices then Schipa or Gigli, but only them can lift you by the soul.
Someone sometimes reminds me of Schipa, although he is no opera singer. It is Fado legend Fernando Machado Soares, whose heartfelt singing is akin to the great Tito's, in a different genre.
Thanks for the tip. Personally, I grew up listening to Schipa as he was a favourite with my elders in Argentina. The most refined of all the tenors, so they said.
Spot on. Technique is of course not optional. It is necessary before one can do what is required for art songs. Pop singers need not apply. But technique must serve the song. The role of technique is to enable the singer to express the emotions latent in the lyrics and melody. Otherwise, why bother? For example, a midi version of any song is flawless by any quantifiable measure. Pitch, tempo, whatever. But who the hell wants to listen to it?

I suggest you try Claudio Villa's version. He has less voice yet, but is to my ear much better - sweeter and more expressive. Gigli however was a different kind tenor altogether. Toward the end he sounded a lot like Del Monaco. Really. Gigli was in another category. He was a famous Lohengrin.

Tito Schipa sings Tosti's work, Wow, what else needed!!! All cloudy days turn into fine beautiful times...

What wonderful, effortless clarity of tone. And he adds the emotion and passion to these beautiful songs. (And he is handsome in addition).
Magnifico Tito Schipa, splendidi versi, celestiale musica!
