"A man of conscience can never be a consensus leader, he does not take a stand in order to search for consensus, he's ultimately a molder of consensus"~ Just brilliant!
As a person of faith I must say - other than Christ Himself - Dr King is the wisest human being in the long and often unwise history of humanity. I believe - unequivocally - Dr King was - and will forever be - the greatest american to live. I became enthralled with his life and work at the age of 8. I am continuously amazed - year after year, decade after decade - at the increasing relevancy of his words, principles, and beliefs when juxtaposed with the present day. Christ said narrow is the path to righteousness and there are FEW that find it. This is a man that found it and he has been my guide in trying to find and stay on that narrow path for 36 years.
Hard to believe there was actually a time in this country when it was possible to have an intelligent political discourse, without the parties concerned hurling childish, stupid verbal abuse at one another.
You're going to find this hard to believe, but Roger Ailes was the executive producer of the Mike Douglas Show in 1967. Can we imagine Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity having an intelligent discourse with MLK, if he were a guest on Fox? Or would it be easier to imagine MLK being summarily dismissed and disrespected by the type of clowns who were hired by Roger Ailes, after he created Fox News? 1967 seems like it was a long time ago.
What's most amazing about this great interview--BY FAR--is the simple fact that a rational person can speak actual full-length sentences and not be interrupted or edited. MLK was a great man of history, surely one of the greatest Americans, and hopefully an inspiration for our future (?)
We have lost a brilliant leader of all times. I sure Pray God send us another leader like Dr. King and restore times when we can at least agree to disagree. Thanks for loading this interview.
The last statement Dr. King said was the most brilliant. That it is more important for him to maintain truth and commitment to his principles rather than to maintain approval from a person who does not support his position with those principles.
It's so easy to answer every question when you come from a place of true peace and forgiveness. "Peace must not only be a goal that we talk about and seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal." SO TRUE!
I teach black history and often show my students clips like this. Please seek out more of hte actual unedited writings and speeches of MLK, it will give you much food for thought.
“I will not loose favor with the principles of truth and what is right” As one of the most powerful countries in the world - we are an example. Maybe we should start acting like a good one.
"...bitterness at the slow pace of progress...The impatience is very deep and the discontent is very broad..." We have "sunken into darker nights of social disruption" "...it is necessary to have these moments of dissent in order to challenge something that may be leading the whole nation down the wrong path."
He was prophetic in his analogy of the Vietnam War. Dr. King was a visionary. He had the power to really bring attention to the injustice of this conflict and he had to be removed.
I had no idea that the following quote was from this interview : The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. That's my favorite quote of all time, its awesome to see where it came from.
When asked if he cares about his relationship with Johnson, King explains he is more concerned about not losing sight of his principles and morals. I find we should all adopt this ideology of prioritizing our values. In times where we lust for multiple partners or material possessions we allow our emotions to affect our decisions, therefore harming possibilities of peace in this world.
@GodBlesstheGrass: I agree. But look at what is so striking here: unlike O'Reilly and many of his guests, Dr. King's pace of speech is slow and deliberate. Its almost like he really takes the time to thinks about each and every word he articulates. He never interrupts other people, even when they interrupt him (5:26). . By conducting himself with class and thoughtfulness, its as if he has taken the venom out of the snake's bite.
durban they Actually, they killed Dr. King one year to the day from his speech at Riverside Church in Harlem when he first came out publicly against the war.
One thing about MLK is he had a quiet strength about him. He didn’t have to be the loudest, or prove he was the loudest. All he had to do is be present, and his strength showed
I LOVE YOU DR. KING THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR INTEGRITY,GRACE,AND YOUR SELF-LESS SACRIFICE TO ASSURE GENERATIONS THAT FOLLOWED YOURS WOULD NOT FACE THE OPEN STENCH OF JIM CROW THANK YOU RIP
When Martin Luther King says it's unfortunate that it is a tragic period in our nation where "dissent is equated with disloyalty" (paraphrasing) i think that the same thing is true today, it's almost as if when you disagree with American politics, religion, etc that you insult America's ego and more times than not, will receive a reaction derivative of that mind state.
@katyakana An amazing virtue of a real contemporary prophet, I just want to say ...please give us a couple of these men God !! World should be a better place to be for everyone...
Marvelous Martin Luther King 👑! His character and obligation to truth and justice was too much for America 🇺🇸! He was never afraid of standing up for truth, and speaking truth, which convicted and pricked the conscience of the powers that be! That’s why they killed him! He is truly one of a kind!
My son was born at M.L.K hospital a assume Hospital back then. Until humans distroyed it with greed. But lm am still proud of him being born there!! May GOD BLESS U All!! Please us human beings let's stop judging 😍😍!! & LOVE each other PLEASE!!
Most passive men stand afar from anything that requires effort on their behalf to invoke change for a whole. Most people have a individual mindset. Or even their circle of relationships. Some people just can’t fathom a international leadership for a cause to see everyone in a liberated state.
@Arron413 That's why his questions always got tougher. People tried to challenge him, and he always had a very good reply, regardless if certain people refused to hear it. As people all too often do today.
After sitting in my room watching so many inspirational people talk, it is clear to see that both martin luther king and the rapper Tupac were easily on the same level on thought and action on changing society. It is just so sad to see that Tupacs messages are not heard enough, most likely due to the fact that his words were more 'street wise' and harsh, but he spoke the truth all the same. To all those that admire King, i suggest looking at any of tupacs interviews and see how amazing he was
Part of that "taking the venom out of the snake's bite" is evident in the fact he had no problem with that singer poking his finger at his face, which would've IRKED me!
King is so good, he makes these two stooges look like the intelligentsia. Their agenda seems to be to split the Civil Rights movement by their deep concern for its unity.
Dissent is not disloyalty... I'm more concerned with "losing favor" with principles, not a person.... I wonder if these men who conducted the interview feel any guilt of conscience now many years later knowing they willingly (and perhaps knowingly) tried to unjustifiably put Dr. King in a negative light..
You've got to be kidding. Did you actually watch this whole interview? How could you possibly say that Mike Douglas and that other guy "tried to unjustifiably put Dr. King in a negative light"? Mike Douglas could not have been more gracious and respectful of King and the other guy conducted himself the same way. Is it that they asked pointed and tough questions? Are you so thin skinned and childish that you equate a tough question with disrespect and an attempt to put someone in a negative light? Did it ever occur to you that the tough questions were an attempt to let Dr. King speak and thereby reveal the righteousness of what he was trying to accomplish? What I saw was two men being naturally respectful and gracious to a man who they obviously respected and even possibly agreed with on most points. Your post reveals a frightening social disconnect at best and a host of ill conceived uninformed judgments and assumptions at worst. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was obviously a man pf great intellect and social awareness as well as being highly educated while Mike Douglas was a household name in the US in the 1960s and 70s. If you seriously believe that Dr. King would put himself in a position to make himself look stupid or to negatively affect or otherwise jeopardize the social movement the he led and that the whole country considered to be synonymous with him than your an uneducated, ignorant fool and you have learned nothing about the man. Not everybody who wasn't black was against black people or Dr. King or the civil rights movement and in fact I contend that the majority of Americans who weren't black eventually saw the justice of what he tried to accomplish. And in case you're wondering, I'm a middle aged white man who was alive and aware of Dr. Kings life as it played out and sadly ended that 4th day of April in 1968. You've got a hell of a lot to learn... including your own biases.
Despite your self-righteous and condescending, negative response, I sincerely thank you for your honesty. I could respond in the same thoughtless fashion but how could I try and tear you down without first making the attempt to understand you, if I am truly after truth and understanding and not something else? You should really practice what Dr. King preaches. I normally don't bother with attempts at trolling (look it up) so I'll make this quick: "Is it that they asked pointed and tough questions? Are you so thin skinned and childish that you equate a tough question with disrespect and an attempt to put someone in a negative light? Did it ever occur to you that the tough questions were an attempt to let Dr. King speak and thereby reveal the righteousness of what he was trying to accomplish?" - Tough questions are okay, it was the way they asked and how they responded to him. But it really boils down to a question of perception, so going back and forth with you will get us no where. In fact, unless you grew up a certain way, you will probably never get it. "Your post reveals a frightening social disconnect at best and a host of ill conceived uninformed judgments and assumptions at worst." - Yeesh. "If you seriously believe that Dr. King would put himself in a position to make himself look stupid or to negatively affect or otherwise jeopardize the social movement the he led and that the whole country considered to be synonymous with him than your an uneducated, ignorant fool and you have learned nothing about the man." -For the first half of your statement: He wouldn't jeopardize anything since he was a formidable opponent for anyone. And for the Second half: More dribble. "Not everybody who wasn't black was against black people or Dr. King or the civil rights movement and in fact I contend that the majority of Americans who weren't black eventually saw the justice of what he tried to accomplish. And in case you're wondering, I'm a middle aged white man who was alive and aware of Dr. Kings life as it played out and sadly ended that 4th day of April in 1968." -This would have been a better approach. "You've got a hell of a lot to learn... including your own biases." - We all have them, including you believe it or not. Well, I hope you have a better day and please find someone else to bother.
You could say that Dr. King and Malcolm were opposite sides of the same coin, but the last person you mentioned should not be compared in the same breath with Dr. King.
Only1MrGreen his statement about consensus & conscience, & his last statement about "truth & principles" is exactly what separates politicians from "great" men. Anytime you have a leader that is willing to bend or break his or her principles, just to accommodate or be accepted by others..then he is the worst kind of leader, because he doesn't even know where he is going himself or what he even stands for.
true enough....what i find remarkable is the fact. that what he spoke about with blacks not having fair wages, etc. is true to most of all of america. we make under 25 thousand a year. yet we have no one to protect or fight for us today. no matter what color we are...sad how history sunk...yet again. into .the have and most likely..have not
It's interesting when he points out that before he came out publicly against the Vietnam War, most Americans were in favor of it (2:30). But after he condemned U.S. involvement, the situation dramatically changed with the vast majority of Americans turning against it. That said, it's easy to understand why he was assassinated.
Karl Rove former ambassador of Finland. Karl Rove Bush cheerleader. This man has been a thorn in our side for decades. Five deferments. Never did any military service. Love people who love war but play armchair general.
this right here is a smart man. People like Amiri Baraka, Malcolm X, and even Al Sharpton cant hold a candle to this man. this man wants peace. This man believes that people are good and bad by what their character is not by what their skin color is. The three men mentioned before label entire races as good or bad people. to me that is sick and Dr. King would greatly oppose them! RIP MLK! END HATRED NOW!
Dr. King gets criticized by the US Ambassador to Finland……I’m surprised he didn’t yawn or lean over and fart. Hell, the president at the time probably would have had to ask somebody who our ambassador to Finland was. That was one of their burning interview questions….???…..that he ticked off a US ambassador to a country that is smaller than the state of California???? Interviewer: “you have pissed off our ambassador to Finland!”. Dr. King: “And? Most of your viewers wouldn’t even be able to point out Finland on a map kinda like……..VIETNAM”.
I think Dr king would be disappointed at most blacks today with black on black crime, Rap music lyrics, and the incarceration of blacks in general. RIP MLK
he was a classy man..hands down. do i think that it was people in his own race that killed him..yes. he was too good. too heart felt. the world at the time wanted unrest. maclom x...jesse jackson..was not mr. king. research shows that. sad, when you have education and strength..is so soon destroyed..sad to loose such a great man..with so much to give...
In 1967 Martin was at the Riverside Church in New York. He said our soldiers in Vietnam were "like Nazis." You honor this man after denegrating our servicemen? In 2027 they will release the tapes on him that were ordered by Robert Kennedy in October 1963. Coretta had them sealed for 50 years because if the people knew what he was about, she said. "it would destroy his reputation."
Read Nick Turse's Book "Kill Anything That Moves". Seriously. Unless you are a troll, or don't have any compassion for humanity you'll certainly temper your snipes.
alsdyall With Martin you see the decay of religion in his immoral degenerate behavior. Orgies, thievery, and lying on his college papers, are some of the odious behavior of this false prophet. His vulgar worship of sex. His shameless seduction of a lower uneducated race provided him with funds for his immoral behavior. 2027 is going to rip the mask off the believers face. They will see Martin's deception and falsehoods. All that his actions have brought to his people are misery upon misery and failure upon failure. His people are ground down as they are filled with the cultural manure of rap music, hookers, drugs, perverted sex, low achievement in school and the workplace. Nature is the cruel queen of all wisdom. Even their half black president doesn't care about them.
"In 1967 Martin was at the Riverside Church in New York. He said our soldiers in Vietnam were "like Nazis." Produce the evidence of this claim so that if it were said the context can be ascertained; Otherwise, your comment is meaningless.

Agreed.

Yeah....what happened...
Daren Redman This was before the media had an agenda. There's not place for "intelligent" conversation on TV today....
so true.

I have such a strong sense of pride. He was truly a treasure.
"The man of conscience can never be a consensus leader..." Wow, Dr. King was an endangered species!
Unfortunately for the world, you are right.
Very sadly, yes😔😢
I’m just glad James Earl Ray the guy who shot him is gone for good.

Dr. King shows his intellect during this interview. He was prepared and the guest seems to be asking the same questions.
When asked if he cares about his relationship with Johnson, King explains he is more concerned about not losing sight of his principles and morals. In times where we lust for multiple partners or material possessions we allow our emotions to affect our decisions, therefore harming possibilities of peace in this world.

I'm not one to quote people but when he said "darker nights for social disruption" that sounded poetic.
Whatever he stood for, he stuck with it. He was not running for popularity, he was seeking righteousness. His credibility was beyond reproach .
That’s not the most important thing losing favor with a president. He said; losing faith with truth is what he’s protecting
Dissent is not disloyalty... I'm more concerned with "losing favor" with principles, not a person.... dear god bring us back martin luther king in return will give u barack obama !!!
Nixon spoke of peace with honor but eventually stopped Vietnam War.
I have yet to disagree with anything this man says.
SuperBrutus12 So, you don't like black people and don't see any good in MLK? That's cool.
"Coretta had them sealed for 50 years"
Coretta would have no power to do this. I think you're in error.
