Woodturning - You Won't Believe This Firewood Transformation!

- Опубликовано: 11 авг 2022
- The third video of my EPIC Summer playlist. This was an experimental project with a summer theme.
As I said at the end of the video, the pattern is inspired by my local beach, the bottom royal blue being the sea, and the top lighter blue the sky.
I also wanted to try out using the CROWN CRYO CAPTIVE RING TOOL, it was good fun. Link below if you wanted to get yourself one. www.tagserve.c...
This is quite possibly the weirdest bottle opener you've every seen... but I kinda like it
Let me know what you think 😁

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.
Do you like wood dyes? Or do you want me to keep it natural in future videos?! 😁👍
I love the dyes, but it's probably because of how well you used them on this project. The light wood took it well and it seemed to complement the grain rather than hide it.
I would love to see both- Surprise us! ❤
What ever best serves the piece. You are the artist.
Keep it natural
Sorry, really really don't like the colours . . . liked the turning 👍looks like Ash ?
Anything that knocks the top off a beer gets my vote. Cheers

The wood dyed are so cool! I like the transformation of them into each other. You never cease to amaze me! The free circles left me speechless. You make it look so easy and I know it isn't. Beautiful!!!💝
I like everything you do! You be you. You’re a real turner…thanks for sharing.
Hi Bob thanks so much for the feedback, I do like to experiment and mix it up and the strong colours can be like Marmite to wood turners. What did you think of the captive rings? ... 😃🪵👍
@@HarrySmithShorts Captive allways mystify me and it's something I've never tried. It's probably time to get brave and give it a try.

I hope it didn't disappoint Frank. Physicodelic... 🪵😃👍
Nice, kept me wondering till the end..👍
Many thanks for the feedback Greg, did you like the captive rings? ... 😃🪵👍
The captive rings are a nice added feature to the handle. You appear to have a well equipped tool chest, so it was nice to see you using some smaller chisels as well as the curved ring cutter..Blessings and good fortune moving forward..
@@gregdagg9305 thanks Greg, I am very lucky to be supported by Axminster and have a lot of new tools ... 🪵😃👍

😮wow - Simple & Perfect, Color choices cheery as well. Great job! 😍

I love it it looks like the dye, and I’m a huge fan of the dye I wear it almost daily, also a neat shape and like the captive rings too.
Thanks Pickle I'm really pleased that it was a favourite of yours! It seems to have pushed all your buttons with the inclusion of tie dye .... 🪵😃👍
Very nice 👍
Many thanks for your comment Mountain View ... 😃🪵👍
Both are beautiful and have their places.
Totally agree Big Unk, vivid colours on wood can be like Marmite to some ... 😃🪵👍
Very nice. I love the colours.

Natural, and the odd wood dyes would be nice 😊
Thanks Angela - 50%, half and half all noted ✅ Did you like the captive rings? ... 😃🪵👍
Great turning Harry. I normally open beer bottles with my teeth but this is a superb alternative. I'm currently helping a friend who has just begun turning. He recently came back with a piece which included a captive ring so I was so pleased for him. I like colouring in wood as it often accentuates a piece.
Many thanks Alan, ouch you must have steel teeth 😬 you need to turn a bottle opener! Hope all is well ... 🪵😃👍
love it

What a great bottle opener it is really cool yet another lovely awesome piece. I like the blue and red stain it's nice and I liked the natural colour as well. Congratulations on a fabulous piece

@@HarrySmithShorts yes I liked them
I love it Harry!
The dye brings out the natural grain in the wood, although you have to be careful not to get it everywhere.
Many thanks Lisa, there's a funny story about that ..... 🪵😃👍

Many thanks for the feedback John, I know vivid colours can be a bit Marmite to wood turners. Did you like the captive rings? ... 😃🪵👍
I've used food coloring for wood dye, it works well and costs pennies. Not everything should be dyed though. You should consider making an entire chess set with captive rings....
Thanks for sharing the tip Pp Ss.
I do need to start some chess pieces ... 🪵😃👍
That is the most fancy bottle opener I have ever seen Harry.
Great video mate and I like the colours.
Take care Harry.
Cheers, Huw
Thanks so much Huw, I'm so pleased that you liked it. I am planning more projects with captive rings, I really enjoyed creating them ... 🪵😃👍
Nicely done brother
Many thanks Tree Forge, appreciate the comment... 😃🪵👍
The colors worked on this piece of wood and utensil.
Many thanks Lee, glad it worked for you ... 🪵😃👍
Looking good pal I think you should make a chess piece.
Thanks for your comment Connor, a chess piece is on the project list ... 😃🪵👍
Nice work Harry.
When you do the captured rings again, put with some tape a piece of sandingpaper on the can opener. It is very easy then to sand the rings on the inner side.
Many thanks for your comment and tips Joost ... 🪵😃👍
I prefer natural wood color but the wood dye adds a new dimension to the art of wood cutting. I love the bottle opener - The colors suit this kitchen tool.
To finish the rings on inside surfaces use a band of sandpaper fixed on the shaft and sand them carefully keeping in hand. :-)
Many thanks Willie I'm glad you liked the technique. What did you think of the wood dye colours? ... 🪵😃👍
Natural.
Someone likes to, in my opinion, waste a lot of time playing with his fancy fence and slide system on his bandsaw. A way to justify the purchase I’m guessing 😜
Hi Leefy, I've had to cope with old equipment for a while now. It's just so good and a real pleasure to work with excellent tools! ... 😃🪵👍

Thank you for your comment. I prefer to let the wood speak for itself and allow the tools to tell their own story as they make their changes. However I did speak at the end of this video ... 🪵😃👍
I love the dye! It’s translucent so you can still see the grain. It’s really pretty! Thanks for sharing!

I love captive rings. I have made baby rattles and I put them on flower vases. My next goal is a captive ring in an inside out turned vase.
@@suepetty5453 wow! I love the sound of that Sue, let me know how that goes ... 😃🪵👍
I did a thing with firewood once. To decorate my parents fireplace, I took a nice square piece of their oak firewood out to the barn. There I squared up the sides in the bandsaw, leaving the bark on one side, though it was almost perfect to start. Then I made them nice and square on the line sander and further polished them with a vibe sander all the way to 6000 grit. A bit of wax and elbow grease and now we call it art. I could open a beer with the sharp edge of it but tha would damage it. I have better tools for that.
Thanks for sharing your story Big Bird ... 🪵😃👍
You amaze me mostly, but confused me thoroughly with this one. Or had me guessing right to the end, if you prefer that...
I like the dye. Maybe mix it up from week to week
Good idea Jennifer, keep everyone happy. Did you like the captive rings? ... 😃🪵👍
what type of sanding sealer do you use? water or lacquer based?
Hi Jim, it's an acrylic based sanding sealer ... 🪵😃👍

Horses for courses.
I turn little bitty bowls from oak and pecan the bowls I turn are about 1-2 inches in diameter
I actually have a wood lathe my self but I’ve never turned something like this
its funny i thought for sure it was a baby rattle..........
I can see what you mean Greg, its another project ... 😃🪵👍
Hello Harry I love your bottle opener. I don't suppose you sell them. If yes will you ship internationally? Specifically Anchorage Alaska USA.
I thought it was going to be a kids rattle!
Totally see where you are coming from, so I thought I'd turn it on its head ... 😃🪵👍
I prefer less vibrant colours. But as far as the craftsmanship and application of the colours are concerned - top notch.

Hello, what is the brand and model of your band saw?
who wants to tell him his parting tool was upside down?
A capa é só pra enganar. Tchau!
I hate to see a gloved hand anywhere near a powered machine, I lost 3 fingers and half a thumb when a glove got entangled and pulled my hand in. Without the glove I would have felt the pinch and natural reaction would have been to pull away.
Lovely work, however, sat watching you use sand paper whilst wearing gloves on a spinning lathe made me cringe!
Worthless high speed does not show your skills
Thanks Jingles I'll have to make a longer, slower video ...😃🪵👍
I t is EXTREMELY bad practise to wear gloves when using machiery. Do you really want to rip your fingers off? And, Yes, I can show you pictures of the engineer who had that happen - not nice when it happened nor now watching him try to do things one handed.
I thought the same thing.
Not so amazing, kinda stupid actually. I would not have watched had I known you were just gonna make a handle for some Rockler screw in product.
I know Woodglut has the best woodworking plans.
