I very much appreciated Jamie’s take on the character and the metamorphosis of the box through its various forms was a neat twist. The original, however, could never be topped. Doug’s performance was beyond memorable. It was iconic. Most importantly though, the entire original cast, as well as the story, were perfect. Clare Higgins’ performance was as good as it gets for playing a cold-hearted bitch-on-wheels. Hellraiser 1 and 2 aren’t simply great horror movies. They are great movies, period. The music, the practical effects, the editing, the casting, everything. It’s pretty much impossible to top something like that, but I’m glad that they tried.
"Cold-hearted bitch-on-wheels" hahaha perfect description. But yes, very well said overall. It is why I'm glad they opted to go the reboot route; a direct remake would have been an absolute disaster.
The sex scenes in the original Hellraiser between Claire and Frank were a lot longer. It was an affair and she was obviously in love with her husband's brother, so the sex scenes were both intense, and affectionate at the same time which made sense. I saw the script for it online. I'm not sure if it's still available. The internet used to have so much backwater information available. Likewise with the original script for Purple Rain and why Prince's character was wearing a large earring in the film. Now it's just opinionated blog posts and RUclips videos that don't back up information they're spewing.
@@p-jaywade1333 Clare’s performance is one of my all-time favorites in all of cinema. The subtlety was the key to it. We know she is the stepmother that Kirsty isn’t cozy with but when we first meet her, Julia seems more distant and shallow than evil. Clare let the character breathe and evolve into something truly hideous over the course of both films. A phenomenal performance.
My problem with the latest one was they keep holding back on gore.. I understand when Hulu did it on Prey because it has the same amount of gore as the first Predator movie but they absolutely should've gone all out with Hellraiser, otherwise what's the point...
That is true, and something that I didn't really realise until I was editing the review. I was swept up in my enjoyment of the new Cenobite scenes that I didn't notice, though I could tell something was 'off'. But that is exactly it. Gore is not everybody's cup of tea, of course, but this is Hellraiser; nobody can deny that such excess and brutality isn't built into the franchise's DNA. Even against a lot of other modern horror films, the new Hellraiser feels tame, which is a problem.
Jamie Clayton does a very good job in the role but the reality is she isn't intimidating, doesn't have that presence or charisma and delivery that Doug Bradley had. He was terrifying like a formidable force, the new Hellraiser looked like someone I'd fancy my chances in a fight. Fragile looking if you like.
I get what you mean, yeah. When photographed from afar, she and the cenobites were creepy, but up close, Clayton's version doesn't carry that sense of gravitas that Bradley's did. That's not entirely on her, of course, it is a combined failing of the soundtrack and directing etc. Given another sequel or two though, I think they could really mine something great from her performance and style.
I love the original, however the new one was brilliant. i loved the box and the idea there is more to it. giving more meaning to the box having wonders.. born 1980 so these movies were our things lol..
@@HauntedBlowfish I agree. the way they went about it, in my opinion was brilliant because, even though they changed things, it did not change the original lore. by making the box (not the shapes it changed too, even though yes loved it) into a way of getting an audience with Leviathan, if you collect 5-6 souls. i think it was a stroke of genius. the blade cutting you and just taking you straight off, kept the 1st movie or 2 ok.. thank you for your reply. have subbed!! checking out your other work...

I hated the reboot. It was boring and had undeveloped and annoying characters. The only things it did right was special effects and cool looking cenobites. This is coming from someone who prefers hellraiser 2 over hellraiser 1.
Fair points. It was definitely slower paced than I expect or want from my Hellraiser films. I liked Riley (despite her troubles) but the rest of the good guys were a bit flat. On your last point, I really need to watch Hellraiser 2 again, it has been a very long time since I've watched but all this reboot talk has got me eager to revisit it (and the 3rd film, I remember having a fun time with that one too)
@@HauntedBlowfish I recently rewatched hellraiser 1 and 2 uncut, and inferno before watching the reboot . Upon rewatching I preferred 2 over 1 because it had more story, lore, gore, kirsty, and it didn't just focus purely on the reskinning aspect of someone coming back (in the first it dwelled on Frank coming back and getting skin to the point not much else happens). We also see personal hells in the 2nd film as well.

I get the love of Doug Bradley (me too) but I really liked Jamie Clayton's version, there was something deeply sinister and sadistic in her performance and even her just staring was a lot more unnerving than the classic bass-y bbeg villain of Doug. Yes it was darker in tone but also better about lore and world building. I think both of them have a high place in the canon.
Glad to read some differing opinions! Definitely agree on Clayton's staring game though, I felt she was more commanding as a silent presence than when she was speaking. But then, I am a sucker for that classic bass voice of Doug, and other villains. Interesting point on the lore and world building. I do agree that they did well to expand on and play with the rules of the Lament Configuration and all that, but those aspects don't matter much to me when the characters aren't as equally interesting, if that makes sense.
I know what you mean. I think it's the lack of truly bloody or creatively weird scenes that the early films especially reveled in. It leaves the new film feeling a bit empty or cold, despite many other positive aspects.
That is an interesting point. I made the review the very weekend the reboot released, and looking back now, not even a year later, I barely hear people discussing the reboot at all.
