Universal's Forgotten Wolf-Woman Movie
Following in the gender-swapping shoes of The Bride of Frankenstein and Dracula's Daughter, She-Wolf of London (1946) acts as a female-led counterpart to Universal's popular Wolf Man character.
The film is full of grisly gaslighting in grand mansions and suspense in foggy London parks, but does it deliver the monster action that audiences craved at the time?

The True Story Behind The Exorcist (aka When 007 Battled The Devil)
Просмотров 384Месяц назад
Released in the year 2000, Possessed features James Bond star Timothy Dalton as a priest tasked with performing the only exorcism sanctioned by the Catholic Church on American soil. It is based on the alleged real event, which also served as the direct inspiration for The Exorcist. But how does Possesed compare against that classic horror, and does the 'real' nature of the story ring true?
Klaus Kinski's Weird OTHER Nosferatu Movie
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 месяца назад
Nearly a decade after starring in the 1979 remake of Nosferatu, Klaus Kinski reprised the role for a strange Italian production, which saw the vampire somehow surviving the events of the original film and relocating to Venice. Joined by an esteemed cast including Donald Pleasance and Christopher Plummer, the film may have had a chance at being a fine little gothic piece, but as always, Klaus Ki...

Back in 1969, whilst still a student at USC, John Carpenter wrote and directed a darkly comedic short titled Captain Voyeur. Following the nocturnal exploits of a serial peeper, Captain Voyeur displays a variety of thematic and technical tropes that Carpenter would employ in his iconic filmography.

Bela Lugosi and Tod Browning's Mysterious First Collaboration
Просмотров 5114 месяца назад
Before director Tod Browning and star Bela Lugosi would partner up on two of the most distinctive horror films of the 1930s (Dracula, and Mark of the Vampire), they collaborated on a much lesser-known movie: an old-dark-house mystery released in 1929, titled The 13th Chair. But is it a notable entry in the filmography of either Lugosi or Browning?
The Failed Omen TV Show - What Went Wrong?
Просмотров 4534 месяца назад
In 1995, shortly after the fourth Omen film faltered, NBC attempted to revive The Omen franchise yet again. But this time, they tried to adapt it as a television series. A pilot was filmed and aired a single time on TV, but was never picked up for a full run. This is the story of that failed show, and the narrative troubles that face all the Omen sequels.

Ranking Every Story from TORTURE GARDEN
always thought this movie was a horror paradoy
I can see that. I wouldn't call it an outright parody myself, but it's definitely knowingly playing with the genre tropes and mining humour from them.
I thought I was pretty good with my horror movie history, but I’d never heard of this!
Haha same, I only found it relatively recently, and only because Universal lumped it onto the Wolfman bluray set!
So... who did commit the attacks in that permanently foggy park then?
The permanently shifty aunt!
Ah, of course.
I never thought of this movie as any sequel to 1979 movie.
That's probably for the best!
Nicholis Cage is one of my favorite actors. Always over the top and entertaining. Loved his take on Dracula. Renfield actor was very good too.
Indeed, and a shout-out to his performance in Longlegs, one of the most memorable roles of recent times!
Music name you used?
All the music used in the videos are my own creations - just little unnamed tracks to throw behind the visuals for atmosphere!
@@HauntedBlowfish you should release it! I'm a producer and i think you're doing a great job! This background track made me feel stuff😉
@@Unhxlydk I assure you they sound a lot worse when isolated away from the narration and what not, but thank you!
@@HauntedBlowfish sure bud ;)
Nice video - some variations - this classical period did have a transforming ape-woman franchise starring Acquanetta (tho I think she's more a Moreau-style ape reverting to original form) - and there's a 1976 Italian film, Legend of Wolf Woman, that's fairly similar to this 46 film in premise, but way more satisfying in gruesome thrills - then the female-centered werewolf movie came into its own IMO when it started using lycanthropy to examine adolescence and the onset of adulthood, as in Company of Wolves and Ginger Snaps
Thanks! I hadn't heard of the 1976 film but looks interesting, adding to my watchlist! And I never delved into the Acquanetta stuff as I thought it was all more adventure/Tarzan style... but I probably should give them a chance!
@@HauntedBlowfish 1940s horror has a thing about apes and mad scientists, and humans turning into apes lol
Hello to June Lockhart. Beautiful and cute. 🥰
But sadly a bit wasted in this role!
Brilliant. Karloff looks just like Werner Krauss as Dr. Caligari.
He does indeed, it's a great look!
This sounds like they reused the original idea for the Wolfman. Because they originally planned on keeping it ambiguous as to was there a real Werewolf or was it all in Talbot's head.
That's interesting - very glad they didn't go that route with Larry though! The crossovers of the 40s may have never occurred.
I personally loved the she-wolf of London, but I went in without any expectation.
I think expectations were half of my issues with the film, true, especially because it was included in their Wolfman boxset when it probably shouldn't be.
Where on Earth did the picture on the right of the thumbnail come from? It looks so weird.
It's a promotional image for the 1990 TV show that was also titled She-Wolf of London. It is... one way to advertise your show I guess!
Its Fletch Keilman here....great video as always....and CONGRATS BUDDY!! I'll be back on my own soon when my phone is fixed
Thank you Fletch! :)
June Lockhart, didn't recognise her.
Indeed, this was still quite early in her career
I know that there are people who like this movie, but i've never cared for it. Such a cheat to promise us a neat werewolf movie and give us a predictable gaslighting movie. No surprise as to who rhe villain was either, at least not for me. Nice seeing the beautiful young June Lockhart though, and Miss Haden gave a terrific performance.
I could even forgive not being given an actual werewolf if the mystery/story had some intrigue to it. As you say, it's very predictable, which just makes it a disappointing watch.
@HauntedBlowfish I totally agree!
5:16 to be fair, that was a *great* pratfall. For like...a one-off joke or a mid movie kill. As the climactic death of the villain, boy that sure is a choice! I guess that's one way to keep the audience from being worried the villain is an actual threat: oh phew, she can be defeated by a flight of stairs! It so often feels like Universal horror movies - even the good ones - all had some fella looking over everyone's shoulder going "okay now lets make sure this isn't TOO scary"
Agreed, the stunt is good but just a little anticlimactic in context. A fitting end for a Renfield type, but not a Dracula, so to speak. True about Universal's films holding back a little, especially in that wartime/post-war era. Even their non-horrors, like the Sherlock films always ending with a clunky rousing monologues to put you at ease after all the mystery and villainy.
I lost my shit at “Drop the bass, Priestess!”
Haha can't be committing endless interdimensional torture without some fine quality speakers for ambiance
A hairy handed bint who ran amok in Kent?
And suddenly my head was filled with the sound Awooooooo
Still waiting for the sequel American She-Wolf in London
A wild John Landis has appeared
@@benderbendingrodriguez420 Why not a London She-wolf in America? Jk 😋 😉 😁
Putting "She" in front of anything and everything was such a funny trend.
Surely the era where creativity peaked! Still waiting on She-Hunchback of Notre She-Dame, mind you
Why?
So not only do the actresses flop, but the movie flopped.
Ha that's right
Werewolves sure like going to London. 😁
They must really like the red buses.
@@HauntedBlowfish lol
ohhh you cut me off twice i was like oh, well maybe it's a cat person alike and good, oh nope you mentioned it, oh he directed 47 films...(oh like in that year) innn the 40's. ohhh youuuuu!
Haha apologies!
I’ll be honest. I love a fake jump scare, like a hand on the shoulder or a cat jumping at a character. It’s fun and a good release of tension.
They can work, especially if the touching hand comes from a bullying/clowning character. But I guess like anything, it's how the trope is executed. Lazy versions of the trope where there's no reason the character should or would creep on the victim, that's what becomes old quickly when consuming so many of these films lol
Such an underrated channel
Thank you!
I’ve always felt this film was Universal’s attempt to emulate Val Lewton’s psychological approach to horror-almost like their version of Cat People, where the true villain might be the viewer’s own imagination.
That was the conclusion I came to as well. Unfortunately She-Wolf doesn't come close to that quality.
"She-Wolf on London" does sound like one of those titles that Val Lewton would turn it into a gripping psychological noir-horror classic.
Indeed, if only Universal had managed to poach him over to their studio. Great things could have occurred!
It weird how they talked about a Nosferatu sequel because a sequel to the story dont exist
Nosferatu In Venice is a sequel. Just an unofficial... and rather unnecessary sequel!
@HauntedBlowfish what the hell would it be about
@@NoahBehlmaier The video explains that. But it basically amounts to a lot of Klaus Kinski walking around looking sad and angry.
The only reason it is called "Werewolf" is because money? A very cheap trick to promote a bad movie with the name of a box office success? I am shocked and chagrined! Mortified and stupefied!
I really should have known better
Post more often.
I would love to, there are so many films/topics I want to cover. But the reality is quite the opposite for now; with a second child arriving imminently I need to take a bit of a break from the channel to focus on domestic life. And then I shall hopefully return with a vengeance!
Vrhunski film
dogovoreno!
Always have such fun doing these! Happy new year all horor fans
Thanks for continuing to play along! Happy new year to you too
I just saw it on Amazon and it says it’s leaving tomorrow so I was considering watching it. So I looked up the trailer and it says it’s made in 2023 but it looks more like lower budget 2003.. lmao 😂 so I just decided to watch a critique of the movie rather than subject myself to what looks so bad it might be made by the state department to torture terrorists.. 😂
You absolutely made the right choice. It may legitimately be the worst film I've ever sat through!
No ! How could they "Blow it" ?
Haven't you heard, every single film apparently needs to be a franchise these days!
Congratulations on the baby!
Thank you! :)
TBC= to be canceled in todays Hollywood corporate climate
Oh I swear if they snatch GDT's Frankenstein away from us now... at least Warner Bros and their trigger-happy Delete button are nowhere near most of these movies!
the 90's was not a good decade for horror and that seems where we're at in nostalgia remakes, but maybe it will force them to make some new original stories
I do think the 2020s so far have been unexpectedly strong in terms of horror films, and if it can keep up some of that momentum, it will easily surpass the 90s - which as you say, yeah, not the best decade despite a handful of stone cold classics
Poor old man. I guess its the british version of the hoa. :(
Those poor blind people. But damn they sure got their revenge
Revenge is indeed a dish best served with elaborate razorblade hallways.
@HauntedBlowfish note to self: never EVER make haunted blowfish seriously angry
I guess mall santas are bound to snap eventually
I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often honestly
Tales from the crypt has been around that long?
Since the 50s yeah, and thus greatly influential on many of our favourite horror filmmakers and writers who then grew up with them - it's no wonder they were able to amass such talent for the eventual TV show, they all already loved the stories!
@HauntedBlowfish Damn, it's been around since the 50s? Learned something new. Twice even!
Congrats on your little one. 🍻
Thank you! About a month to go... this is where the excitement and utter terror really combine hahaha
@HauntedBlowfish Aww. 🥰
Oh my daughter likes their movies, lika studios i mean.
She has good taste!
The back rooms huh? Interesting. I don't understand how the liminal thing is scary, but that's alright
If nothing else, hopefully it will produce something a little different! And that is always welcome
@@HauntedBlowfish true
I cracked up at your little jab at apple tv screening
I won't forgive them until they give my beloved Killers of the Flower Moon a physical release
I actually couldn't stand it follows. It was so boring.
I don't love it as much as most seem to, but I will give it some credit. The concept is delightfully simple and there's wonderful little snippets peppered throughout (the really tall guy creeping through the doorway scared the crap outta me!)
I loved it ❤
Ohhh no more Saaaaw
Lol I used to feel that way by the time the original run ended... but if I'm honest I've come full circle on it all (and I even enjoyed Spiral well enough)
I'm surprised it took them so long to do Fear Street book adaptations?
True, given how often Goosebumps has been recycled over the last 30 years
@@HauntedBlowfish FS is a good book series. Are there any you wish they would adapt?
