Best 1.4 TFSi TSi Mods & Upgrades [Seat, Audi, VW, Skoda Tuning Guide]

  • After redesigning the EA111, the VAG group released the successful but occasionally problematic twincharged 1.4 TFSi engine.
    Recent 1.4 TSi and TFSi are gorgeous engines that perform exceptionally well.
    As I gain more experience with my new A3, which is powered by the EA211 1.4 TFSi engine, I will add to this page with my observations and suggestions and will put up a new video for the EA111 EA211 and EA211 EVO versions when I have established the best tuning mods for them each.
    The EA211 engine is the result of extensive development and testing; it is significantly lighter than its predecessors thanks to extensive weight reduction measures and features only a single IHI turbocharger. The later EA211 was further revised and this gen3 engine has quite a few revisions, many of which are not covered in this video including a cam which is factory pressed into the head so this makes cam upgrades near impossible.
    Aluminium is used for the block and cylinder head, whereas cast iron is used for the liners. By opting for a die-forged crankshaft and connecting rods, we were able to expand the stroke to 80 mm while decreasing the cylinder bore by 2 mm, resulting in an engine that is more torquey and can handle the stresses of forced induction.
    Although its power output is lower than its predecessor's, the car's responsiveness and sense of power are greatly enhanced by its light weight (just over 100 kilograms).
    The EA211's digital inputs have replaced the analogue ones, and the engine is controlled by a Bosh MED17 ECU powered by an Infineon Tricore CPU.
    EA211 Engine Upgrades That Really Work
    When it comes to cost effective mods then for the money, remapping is the best option, however aftermarket ECUs and piggyback ECUs are also viable substitutes.
    While fast road cams are one of the most noticeable mechanical upgrades, they are also one of the most difficult to obtain; nevertheless, you may be able to find a local company that will regrind your factory camshaft.
    Note that intake and exhaust mods, by themselves, will NOT ADD POWER in most circumstances, but can aid boost power after other mods have been applied by removing the restriction.
    Forced induction, which may be achieved by upgrading turbochargers and superchargers, is the most effective method of increasing air supply, so allowing you to use more fuel and produce more power. It's a high-priced addition but well worth it because of the benefits you'll reap.
    Porting and flowing the head are two methods used to increase the flow of air into the engine and decrease the amount of resistance to that air's passage.
    Improvements to the intercooler will have a number of positive effects, especially on turbocharged engines that benefit from having the intercooler placed near the front of the vehicle.

    2019 VW Jetta in Canada 1.4 CZTA.
    I got the APR stage one tune (remap) in the summer of 2022.
    APR claims 171 wheel hp and 255 ft/lbs of wheel torque. Up from 147whp - 185wtq
    I believe it, the car pulls a lot more! I am very happy with the improvement. As an aside my fuel economy has remained the same unless I thrash it.
    Cost me 500 CAN all in.
    Best of luck.

    Good info good video. Got 7yo ibiza FR with 1.2 TSI EA211 - only regular oil changes and map sensor cleaned as it was throwing car in to limp mode on 4th on full throttle.
    Remap by local reputable tuner to 140@210Nm - after remap it flies like hell and eats even less fuel (ofc until you trash it ). In general i went from 6.3l average to 5.8l. Best thing about remap is fact that now i can use car on much lower RPMs having now same power than before on higher RPM. Internal inter cooler is very nice touch that can be enhanced by external one, swapping turbo to hybrid + a bit intake tweaks (less restrictive air filter can do a lot in this charge system) you can easily hit 180-200+ hp on this small engine.
    My only recommendation for all ea211 is to keep higher viscosity oil in car and do not switch to 0W-20 - if you are not living in very specific climate. Engine is running much better on 5W-30 or 0w-30 oils. And ofc change it 10-15k OR 1 year and you are good to go even with those tunes.
    We use it as daily car and its awesome. Does not ask for money, runs cheap as hell and withing legal limits, its pretty quick. Strongly recommending also for beginner tuners.
    Enjoy!

    I myself bought my Seat Leon SC 1.4TSI ACT new back in 2015. VAG engine codes EA211/CZEA. My "mods":
    - K&N panel air filter
    - Silicone intake piping (MST Performance) between filter housing and turbo
    - Intake behind grille opened up directly in front of the filter housing feeding tube
    All the above make for even less turbo lag, significantly cooler intake temps, and letting off the gas makes the car almost sound like it's a dragon breathing down your neck from the outside.
    - Milltek resonated catback system
    - Catch can installed in between the cylinder head breather tube
    - Stage 1 engine remap done @±97.000km --> 193bhp / 327Nm
    - Stage 2+ DSG remap for healthier, stronger shifts, better response, and nicer driveability
    Car now has 110.000km and healthy as ever.

    czca is 125 hp version not 122 hp.
    czca is with belt.
    second thing.
    upgrading intake is must go option. even for stg 1.
    i got 125 czca engine.
    my setup mst turbo elbow, k&n panel, oem box with custom pipe to mst elbow. cover for hot country and open second intake on oem intake plastic.and i isolate air box under where is hot temps from engine.
    i got leon fr so i open al restrictions on front bumper and add hg motorsport air baflles.
    with monitoring temps on vcds i gain 10-15 degre lower intake temps in mainfold, and faster spol of turbo. and some noise.
    i remove resonator and go with 55mm till back box. oem is 50mm from resonator to back box.
    i try bolt on 150hp czda turbo and i got lot lag. so bigger turbo is no go for that engine. better to buy rtmg hybrid of smaler 125 hp turbo and go with it.
    or option is to stay on smaler turbo, 200cell downpipe and u will see 200hp+
    air intercooler is also no go becouse of lag.
    alternative option is vmi meth injection like i got or separate oem wather ic from water engine loop.
    use oil ic mounted in front of bumper separate water pump (like oem electric pump. and conect to oem ic in mainfold)
    clutch on 125 can handle up to 310nm becouse is mq200 gearbox.
    150hp got mq250 gearbox and can handle up to 370 nm max.
    sachs got clutch that can add up to 15-20% tourq depend of gearbox.
    im now on tvs stg 3 with aem wmi meth. 50/50 mix
    biger 150 turbo. but im loking to get rtmg 240rs turbo, hjs 200 cel downpipe and sachs performance clutch. becouse in colder temps i got sliping in 4, 5, 6 gears. im ower 300nm.

      Great advice and thank you so much for the feedback. I have a few questions I'm currently grappling with you might be able to add your experience here.
      Which model did your water IC upgrade come from? Did it make a big difference? Was it easy to install?
      What do you think the power limits are for the standard fuel system on these? The dual VVT spools up the larger turbos better so it makes sense you'll get lag, I never appreciated this but this is the sort of thing someone needs to try out.
      I have made a few updates to the article now, but will revisit this, I'm investigating exhausts and cats at the moment and a few other things which I need to verify. I'll also rewrite the section on intercoolers but still have some questions I'm grappling with.

      98/100 octane is a must for 150hp+ anything less WILL destroy your OEM pistons....
      K03 turbo will push to 200 hp easily(1.2bar max) for more you need hybrid
      Simple KN (open/closed or panel) air filter along with proper tune on dyno (rich AFR to reduce knock etc) you can get to 147kw(200hp) no problem
      Main issue are pistons since they are made with wrong silicone amount in them they will crack when pushed past 200hp or runnin on low octane.(more power-more heat-pistons material start to crack-End)

    Mine has an EA211 CZTA, but it has a double warranty because of the TDI programming. So in May 2024 I can start playing with the engine. Am considering the stage 1 maybe stage 1+ software. I am not a wannabe racer, and I like the car and may want to keep it longer. Should I get the heads de-carboned before warranty ends? I have mostly run ethanol-free premium gasoline in this (used some e-10 premium for a couple of months).

      I’m in a 16 plate octavia estate so pre facelift and a 1.4 but still has 150hp. Although it feels like there’s more. If you really want the extra power then I would go for a re map. Find a good garage local to you with a dyno. For £300 you should get to 180 easily depending on your car.
      However maybe running higher fuel has been known to get the car to make 160hp.
      I ended up not getting the remap as I felt the car is fast enough for uk roads. In 3rd gear you can keep up with a gti. Golf r estate owner was very surprised the other day. He though I was in a vrs. Above 100 then the 200hp plus cars pull ahead but I want to keep my license.
      In the end I got my stock wheels painted black, got some wind deflectors, tinted windows rear only, and a good set of tires on the front.
      Next would be door mirrors and front grille in black and then I’m done.
      If you want speed I would maybe suggest you consider though the superb estate 220 or 280? 220hp front wheel drive basically a gti or 280hp 4x4 basically a golf r.

      I wasn't actually aware of this fact on the EA221, I thought the cams could be changed. There will be a dedicated EA211 and EA221 video coming up when I've got all of the options sorted and facts narrowed down. I really appreciate your input.
      I do want a performance cam in mine EA211 so I guess my only option if I cant get one is to swap the head. I wonder if the EA111 head will fit.... Or did this change only on the EA221?
      By the way for those wondering RTMG, Piper and Kent offer regrind services for the EA111 cams.

    Hey man. Nice video. I’ve got a question I wonder if you can answer. I’ve had a 1.4tsi Touran 2014. I think it’s 148bhp. Petrol. I imported it from cyprus to uk when I moved back here. The mpg in colder weather has really dropped (38mpg has gone down to 30 on a highway, and 34mpg has gone down to 23 around town!). I was wondering what advice you could give aside from my light driving style, if there was anything I could do that would increase mpg. I got such a good deal on the car and generally love it so don’t want to switch to diesel if I can avoid it.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  6 месяцев назад +1

      Drop a gear when cruising to make sure the engine is at least 1400rpm for the 2 cylinder mode if you have it to cut in and this really adds economy.
      Then try to use a max of 2000rpm most of the time, this seems to give me the best economy.
      Is the EGR working properly? Do you have an economy mode on your dashboard controls, this will add a little.
      Tire air pressures can make a big difference so make sure these are up to the correct levels, and I get better fuel economy from premium fuel, I use Shell Vpower as much as possible.
      Run some BG fuel cleaner through and make sure the injectors are as clean as possible.
      If the mileage is creeping up you might have carbon build up on the intake which will sap some fuel economy.

    • @NasserAlazzawiTV
      @NasserAlazzawiTV 6 месяцев назад

      @@torquecars thanks so much for the reply! EGR is fine. Its a 1.4tsi DSG which I forgot to mention and I just use it in D mode. It does often hover between 1400 and 1900 on its own as I'm not putting my foot down. There does not appear to be an Economy mode available to this model (however there is on my 2014 Golf 1.6tdi DSG).
      I will check out the tyre pressures for sure and try premium unleaded.
      Question 1. I've ran the Fuel Cleaner through and have more in the boot. Should this be multiple times in a row, or should it be once every few months for example? (am I wasting my money repeating it on every fill?)
      Question 2. Should I consider a remap for MPG or is it only worth it on Diesels?

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  6 месяцев назад +1

      Ah I'm in the UK so assume everything is a manual!
      Some cleaners have very little active ingredients, the one I'm happiest with is BG, this works well and for me is a 20-30,000 mile only requirement. Good quality fuel should already have a fuel injector cleaner in it so that keeps the worst at bay.
      A remap will not do much for fuel economy on these engines, it will give a nice power bump and make the car more fun to drive. The gearboxes on those do change at the best point for economy unless you use sport mode, it is hard IMO to improve that.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Год назад +2

      They just got better and better with each revision IMHO. I am currently working on videos specific to the EA211 onwards. I find that most people search for "1.4 TFSi" which is annoying when there are so many revisions and versions, so the first videos I have put up (this Mods one & the Problems one) were primarily aimed at the early ones, but still 80% relevant to later ones. The early models included the EA111 twincharger which was groundbraking but had a fair few issues.
      I personally have a 2015 1.4 TFSi and have had no problems at all with it. It is fair to say upgrades are somewhat limited on the newer revisions as camshafts were pressed into the head and I don't think the aftermarket turbos have caught up with it yet.

    Hello, I am planning to but a 2014 Audi A3, which has been driven 98000 KM. I am confused as the badge on the says 1.4T and not 1.4 TSI or TFSI. Is this a different engine ? Also are the Cod engines different or all the TSI and TFSI engine comes with Cylinder on Demand ? Would really appreciate the help as this is first car.

    • @torquecars
      @torquecars  Год назад +1

      The engines all use direct injection or stratified cylinder injection, so the modernTurbo is assumed to be direct injection and the Stratified Injection SI or Fuel Stratified Injection are just different names for the same thing. VW tend to use TSi and Audi tend to use TFSi.
      Not all engines came with Cylinder on Demand. This was mainly on those with a 150hp output and from around 2014 onwards, there are some regional differences. VW call this Cylinder Activation Technology or something like that. At 1400rpm at low load in economy mode the dashboard will show "2 Cylinder Mode" when it cuts in and you might notice the subtle purr from the engine whilst it is running on 2 cylinders.
