When shops go straight to remanufactured engines only and cut out the used engine parts places... They will be forced to drop their prices. You're almost better off buying the whole salvaged car for those prices and parting them out to recop some of the cost!
I did fleet work for some years. Got a reman engine from NAPA once that lasted only a year. All the junkyard engines I’ve got are still going even if they needed work like seals and whatnot
@@Iamthestig42069you’re basing this off of one reman experience? Before my dads repair was lost in a massive wildfire, he quit using salvage ones. For the reason you cited for the reman. He used local machine shop engines for over 10 years, in that time there was maybe 3-4 that had issues. It depends on who’s doing the machine work or assembling them.
I needed a new motor for a 2005 corolla about 6 weeks ago i couldn't find anything with under a 100k miles for less than 2500$. I found a totaled 2006 5 speed with 55 thousand miles for 500 dollars in a ladies driveway, it was all rear crash damage.
No, its because people saw there was actually a market for these...so they got to a junkyard and rip as many out as they can and sell them for crazy prices.

Agreed, same situation here in south Texas region with salvage yards. I can understand like HEMI-Hellcat engines and high performance salvage parts but the smaller displacement motors it’s like cmon.
Not always, I bought a spare motor/trans with harness and ecu for my project car. cost 1,500 last year now the same combo is 3,800. It's not even a very popular motor
100% Correct. I got caught up putting salvage motors in one of these for carshield warranty. They refused to put new chains in the used engines, we are on 4th engine.
Almost like something happened in the last 3 years that absolutely trashed the economy, and now everything from gas to groceries to car parts costs 50% more...

A lot of the places selling salvaged engines want the one you're replacing as a core as well, which tells me they may be reselling your broken engine on that same salvage site.
Trying to recoup max value from the payout. I tried to buy back a Acadia after total from hail damage. The insurance wanted $8k for it but only paid me 11k which didn't even cover the loan. Because you can't buy one for $11k... 😠

I remember not too long ago, I bought a 3.5 V6 out of a Ford Edge with low mileage for $650.00. It was so cheap I had to ask why. He said he had ten of them and was going to scrap them if he couldn't get something for them.
What sucks is that there was a salvage yard close to a house I used to live in, 6cyl engine that I pulled was like 300 bucks for the engine and most of the dressing I believe. But that yard closed during covid.
Exactly the same in the UK, value of older cars has gone up as people soldier on with them instead of scrapping them, and salvage parts have also gone stupid. Salvage yards will drop their prices when people start fixing their engines instead.
My local area we had to go used years ago because all the experienced machinists retired and the newbies couldn't read a micrometer. Both major rebuilders in the Fresno area assigned 2 guys for full time warranty work. I got a beautifully painted long block that poured water into the pan because of a giant crack in the block. Another had the head gaskets upside down and swapped left/right, blocking water flow and overheating. It was roulette buying from them.

i priced a salvage engine for my sierra. 2500 plus shipping for a salvage engine. One month warranty. 4000 for a reman with warranty, covering the engine, tow, and rental. 8 months later the timing chain broke and they stood behind their warranty, paid my mechanic to do the work again. covered to tow, and paid for the rental for the week I was out of a vehicle. Didn't want it to happen, but they did their part to the best of their abilities. Haven't had a problem since. Knock on wood.

So I instead looked for a cavalier engine, found one for $300, told them I didn't want the warranty so they knocked it down to $250. I then rebuilt that whole engine and assembled it for the S10. Got over 6,000 miles on it and still running strong. I work that truck hard too

Even 4l60e transmissions are getting more expensive. I used to regularly find $400-500 trans. Now it's $700-900 regularly. I guess I get to learn how to rebuild mine for $300.
I don't think you will be able to get a kit for it for $300 anymore. I run a transmission shop and our cost for most kits are over $300. Good luck though it's a good skill to have.
I've wondered about buying a new vehicle, the most popular make and model in the most common color and selling every bit of it for parts. A $40k car might part out for $100k. It would help to have a friend in the dealer parts department though.
Ran into the same thing with the transfer case for my 06 Ram 2500. Salvage yard wanted $1200 with no warranty for one with over 100k on it. Parts store wanted $1000 for a reman with a 2yr 20,000 mile warranty included... when I told the salvage yard i could get a reman for less than them, they said "ok" and hung up the phone on me 😕
I won't even bother buying a salvage engine anymore. We were looking for a 5.9L Magnum engine for my brother's 2000 Durango. They wanted $1400 for a supposedly 150k mileage engine. Bought it,ended up returning it because the main & rod bearings were shot. They were down to the copper layer on most of them. Ended up picking up a remanufactured engine at Auto Zone for $2300. At least it came with a 3yr 70k mile warranty for some peice of mind. It even came with a gasket kit and oil pump. While I had it all apart, I upgraded to the optional HD cooling system radiator, water pump, and clutch fan. I picked that stuff up online. The parts are much cheaper online vs. the auto parts store. After everything was all finished and it was back on the road,he was into it less than $3k,I know that. I ended up getting paid, too, but not by my brother. He bought it from one of my other relatives less than a month prior to the engine blowing up. They felt bad about that and talked me into fixing it for him. I did that job way too cheap 😂 it was a lot of work. Everything was difficult on that truck. I even ended up removing the inner fenders so I could cut the exhaust pipe bolts. They were rusted and seized. They wouldn't come loose. Somebody worked on it sometime in the distant past and used red lock tight on some stuff. Anyway,...it went back together, way easier than it came apart. Took me/us 4 straight days to finish the job. Mostly me,because he doesn't know much about fixing...anything. But he knows everything about baseball. 🤣
Buddy of mine built his 5.3 ls had $5430.00 in it. You could call jeggs and get a reman 450 horse drop in weekend job for $6000.00. You can't really find parts stores now that will have everything and all the machine shops around here are a bust. Sad times
At this point doing a rebuild is cost effective and you know what you have when its back together. Havent had a used engine that I havent torn down and found issues with anyway in a long time..
I haven't bought a used engine for some time now but f*** that's outrageous i remember getting used engines all the time for anywhere from 500 to 1500 bucks depending on what it was and the mileage on it.
salvage yards are raking it in on EBay Motors. Ebay gives the platform but raised the sale percentage. My hats off to you as there is no way to know for sure if the mileage is correct. Not all motors come from insurance pay offs where there may be some traceability but nobody is really looking..
It's because of your region, those engines in the Tennessee area range from $900 to around $2,600. What I do when I'm looking for an engine is expand my search radius on that site. And as someone else stated, yes sometimes you're better off buying a wrecked vehicle with a good engine. I was looking for parts for an RX300, they wanted $350 for one headlight assembly and $400 for the hood. I ended up buying an entire vehicle for $800, scavenged the parts I needed, and then sold the rest for scrap. I actually made a small profit.
The auto salvage yards are definitely not the money savings deal they used to be. In most cases, they pay $300.00 to $500.00 for a car or truck if that. Some of my mechanic friends buy cars from people who don't want to replace the engine or transmission. They have pretty much stop doing it because the prices are just stupid.
I noticed the same here. I used to order engines for $500 to $1000 now $1800 to $2700, for $500 more I can order it directly from manufacturer new 0 miles. There is no short supply on engines is just pure greed.
I bought a New 3.6 for a Buick enclave at the Chevy dealership for $3900 AND the wrecking yard wanted $3400 and this is an engine that basically needs new timing chains when they reach 70k!!! Because of chain stretching!!!
09 odyssey. Spent 3200 on a 97k mile 3.5 and another 400 on t belt water pump and such. New gaskets and all. Glad I own a shop. The labor would have made it extremely expensive
When a gaggle of idiots running the government start printing money by the trillions, devaluing every dollar already out there, then it takes many, many more of those dollars to buy what used to be more affordable. It's called inflation.
ha- I bought a Ford 2.3 salvage for $863 .... the pull and replace, new fluids, new carb, new headers, new exhaust.... 1500 total for an 800 1984 field find truck. year - 1999.
Yeah junkyards are getting crazy with they’re prices like wtf we need to stop buying parts from them till they come back to reality same way we did with bud light
when i was looking for an engine, i didnt bother with salvage of just the engine, i bought a whole car from market place and another from craigslist. then i worked for a scrap yard where lots of perfectly good working cars that were impounded and never claimed were dumped. boss would sell the whole care for a few hundred. worth a look. im sure you know all this already tho.
It’s because those era of ecotecs are phased out but all those have oil consumption issues when they have that many miles, a reman would be the way to go
I picked up a 2010 traverse a few years back ,immaculate!! It did traverse stuff and needed an engine. The fucking engine USED was the same price as another running and driving traverse could be bought for . A new crate engine was only 500 more than the used !! And thats no labor !!! It pained me to crush such a clean suv , But that was the only way i could make any money with it.
We all need to come together and stop being ok with everything this is out of control now gas shouldn't be 4 dollars a gallon and food is absolutely ridiculous as a diesel technician myself of 26 years I can't afford anything anymore it's time we step up and try to put these people in there place and say we are not going to take this anymore
Change the oil at 50% on the EcoTec engines. Gas can mix with the oil easily and in time causes engine failure. If you check the oil regularly you will notice on the dipstick the oil level going up...thats the gas getting added
I blame companies like LKQ and Bessler. They buy up the cheap engines to raise prices. Plus it's worse on engines that are known to be problematic like Hyundai/Kia engines and the 2.4 ecotec
I never sell salvage motors because if they are bad then I am stuck on my dollar for the replacement of a new motor. Even though most salvage yards cover warranty on the engine itself it does not warranty the additional parts needed such as gaskets and fluids and most do not cover labor unless another warranty was purchased with the motor and even then they do not pay full labor rate, most pay 50% labor rate or $40/hr whichever is lower. This is the sole reason I will only install remans or crate motors, if something goes wrong they foot the entire bill. If a customer wants to install a salvage motor I require them to purchase the motor themselves and if it is bad it is on their dollar and not mine. My employees do not work for free and neither do I.
I guess the question is how bad are the Engines in the Equinox? When I was in the salvage business 10 or so years ago...the price was determined by how hard it was to get a good engine. If the engines are easy to get ahold of good then there cheap...because you can't give them away.....but say an engine is hard to get ahold of good and you get ahold of one thats a verified runner? They get expensive....I remember how expensive the old GM quad fours got in thoes Cavalier/Grand Ams Got...cause you couldn't find any good ones
That's why when I was looking for an engine for my 87 Chevy. Because my original engine, the crank chef catwalked. I saw the prices in my note. I'll just go get a three fifty engine block and build it from scratch my Self
Ok, but for the remanufactured engines, what's the wait time looking like? I heard (granted, this was several months ago) that the wait time for some of them (especially the GM I4s) was *years* long.
Yep just went thru this on a 2012 chrysler 200 2.4 called local junkyard few options between 1800 to 2200 dollars 160t miles to 90t miles. Found on at u pull from smashed in the back car with 160 on it runs great
You know I've watched a ton of this guy's videos. I can't recall ever seeing a forerunner. As a matter of fact I watch a lot of these car tech guys shorts. I don't think I've ever seen a forerunner. Which makes me feel really great about owning one. Though I'm terrified for the day, one does come in because you know it's going to be bad
A 10 equinox....... Not only needs timing chains, it needs pistons and rings too. This was the first year of direct injection. They had the wrong rings and pistons for direct injection. Best to evaluate the worth of the vehicle and then buy the best thing for it. Used may still need the update pistons, rings, and chains
Yeah… Back around 2018/19! Last (and only) $500 engine I did was a 3.4 in my nieces Equinox with 130k The broad bought an engine with damn near 200k on it and I think that engine had more issues that the original
since you said equinox, what was the deal with their piston rings? My wife had one and I urged her to get rid of it about 100k when I heard about the issue, but I never found out what exactly it was that GM screwed up.

Sad times
I suspect the quality of most reman companies are making salvage units way more valuable.
Any engine is $350 CAD ($266 USD) at Pick and Pull Calgary. You could buy and have it shipped cheaper than the cost shown here.
Considering you can buy whole cars for that price. Hell I bought my 97 cobra for 4500, and while it has some issues it still runs and drives fine.
salvage yards are raking it in on EBay Motors. Ebay gives the platform but raised the sale percentage. My hats off to you as there is no way to know for sure if the mileage is correct. Not all motors come from insurance pay offs where there may be some traceability but nobody is really looking..
We have pull your own parts salvage yards here in Charleston South Carolina, engines sell for between $300‐$600
It's because of your region, those engines in the Tennessee area range from $900 to around $2,600.
I'm with you! I work on Subarus only and used engines are about at 50% success rate
I bought a New 3.6 for a Buick enclave at the Chevy dealership for $3900 AND the wrecking yard wanted $3400 and this is an engine that basically needs new timing chains when they reach 70k!!! Because of chain stretching!!!
Im in MN/ND. Same thing here.
If it's common but expensive why buy what you already have. Reman for the win👍
09 odyssey. Spent 3200 on a 97k mile 3.5 and another 400 on t belt water pump and such. New gaskets and all. Glad I own a shop. The labor would have made it extremely expensive
🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧Seems like they are price gouging?
That's how the "free" market works.
When a gaggle of idiots running the government start printing money by the trillions, devaluing every dollar already out there, then it takes many, many more of those dollars to buy what used to be more affordable. It's called inflation.
Pick up an economics book, flip to the supply and demand section.
Remanufactured engines come with one year unlimited mileage warranty w/o extra cost. Definitely buy the long block!
ha- I bought a Ford 2.3 salvage for $863 .... the pull and replace, new fluids, new carb, new headers, new exhaust.... 1500 total for an 800 1984 field find truck. year - 1999.
Yeah junkyards are getting crazy with they’re prices like wtf we need to stop buying parts from them till they come back to reality same way we did with bud light
Wait... you're buying Bud Light? LOL
@@Dosbomber no reread it saying boycott junkyards like everyone did with bud light
when i was looking for an engine, i didnt bother with salvage of just the engine, i bought a whole car from market place and another from craigslist. then i worked for a scrap yard where lots of perfectly good working cars that were impounded and never claimed were dumped. boss would sell the whole care for a few hundred. worth a look. im sure you know all this already tho.
It’s because those era of ecotecs are phased out but all those have oil consumption issues when they have that many miles, a reman would be the way to go
Yeah my last one was only. $500.00 4 years ago.
Most I ever paid was 750 ever and I do it frequently
Wonder why everything was so much better 4 years ago....? ;)
I picked up a 2010 traverse a few years back ,immaculate!!
It did traverse stuff and needed an engine.
The fucking engine USED was the same price as another running and driving traverse could be bought for .
A new crate engine was only 500 more than the used !!
And thats no labor !!!
It pained me to crush such a clean suv ,
But that was the only way i could make any money with it.
Damn, no wonder my aunt got $4500 from the insurance for her totaled shitbox!
Literally have 3 Equa”nuts” at our shop with the same problems.
They started taking the motors out of the scrap yard in ocala florida… new to me
I never sell salvage motors because if they are bad then I am stuck on my dollar for the replacement of a new motor.
What would be the cost of a partial or full rebuild on the existing engine.
gotta be why people are pulling engines etc from upicks but LKQ has jacked their prices up
And then you might need to add shipping to that. Unless you have a good scrap yard close by, that has a big inventory and good pricing.
At that price piece of mind with the re-manufactured for 500 more
Yep just went thru this on a 2012 chrysler 200 2.4 called local junkyard few options between 1800 to 2200 dollars 160t miles to 90t miles.
Love his honesty.
😳 Engines were like $500 last I remember
Yeah… Back around 2018/19! Last (and only) $500 engine I did was a 3.4 in my nieces Equinox with 130k
The broad bought an engine with damn near 200k on it and I think that engine had more issues that the original
That’s absurd. Plus it’s one of the most common engines. I just bought from a scrapyard I know for 1500$
Sad part is I've been rebuilding them just because of this. Plus out the door for price of a reman
since you said equinox, what was the deal with their piston rings? My wife had one and I urged her to get rid of it about 100k when I heard about the issue, but I never found out what exactly it was that GM screwed up.
They've always seemed high to me. Reman is definitely the way to go.
Prices for everything is ridiculous now a days.
I can't even find a salvage Vortec 350 anymore where I live. It's reman or rebuild it.
It’s the insurance companies that made these crazy prices on used parts most JY that don’t advertise have them a bit cheaper if not quite a bit less
I just bought a reman. 5 year unlimited mile no fault warranty for less than a used one. For my Chevy Cruze.
