Cecilia, look up the Berkey standalone water filters! It's what people in the US use when they're in off-grid cabins and farms. You could take muddy street water, pour it into the Berkey and within 20 minutes have perfectly safe drinking water. I can completely relate to having to be very aware of water usage. We have a well, so our water supply is essentially unlimited...but... every drop of water we use flows into underground holding tanks, which have to be pumped out by a guy in a tanker truck and hauled away. And it’s expensive, the tanks fill up in about 3 weeks. (And the basement floods if the tanks get too full). So, like you, we’ve learned to be very water conscious. Great job and it’s all in your head, when you are used to a such a thing that you dont have a proper system than you are using what you have. During the War Sarajevo 1992-96 we didn’t have water, electricity, heating, sometimes also not enough food( at least we had a proper pluming 😂), but we used to that for over a 4 years, heat the house ass much as possible ( at one point we didn’t have enough wood for heating we used it just for preparing a food), heat the water, put it in a bucket and get a shower, that’s it, when you don’t have something, you get alternative system and it’s working❤

It was so funny not to see him shake himself but stand there waiting for you to dry him. So he is definitely a dog who needs you to have the dryer ready to dry him once he steps out of the shower.
This is so interesting! It’s a different perspective of every day life, things we take for granted and also conscientiously use of water. ❤️ Of course the dogs shower is the cutest thing! They are so expressive! Greetings from Greece. Love your content!
Years ago we lived completely off the grid and my husband used to go and get water in the same type of a large container that you two use. We were lucky to have a hill on which our water tank stood so our water was all gravity fed with lovely water pressure. I am still very frugal with water even though we haven’t lived that way in years. It’s a good habit to have!
I understand the monumental change and appreciate the stages that brought you there. When living on an island, we had a lined well with pump. Every drop mattered. Could not fill above a level to avoid freezing the pipes in our cold winter's. We now live on mainland and only use $12 a month in water but pay $75 to use. We purchased a bottom feeder cooler and use RO for drinking and cooking. Six containers rotate enough to avoid running out, especially when roads dangerous to get refilled. Amazing system you created and the toilet is very smart. Our dogs get 1 bath this time of year and regular brushing. They clean themselves in the snow and one dive bombs and makes snow angles. Appreciate your sharing. Winter will be easier this year for you. Hug the boys!!
Here in the Caribbean, we have a cistern underground and not a water tank for the water. But one thing we do since it rains here plenty, we have put a trench-like curve at the end of the roof which leads into the cistern. When it rains the water runs off the roof, runs into the trench and goes into the cistern or tank.
Greetings from Nova Scotia!🇨🇦. Love your “cabin”- it is beautiful, functional and respectful to our environment! I really enjoy learning about everyday life in your part of the world.🌍
I'm so happy you have water now. I'm from Australia and lived off-grid for almost ten years. We had a composting toilet that was outside, solar power and tank water. You have to be really mindful of how much water and power you use. Our solar system wasn't very big so I couldn't use an iron (I never iron anyway hehe). We also had a gas fridge and stove and a wood heater.
This was a particularly interesting video! You and Christopher have created a very practical, efficient water system for your home. I’d love to see content about how you haul all those gallons of water from the source and into your tank. The dog showers were hilarious! Thanks for sharing the doggie spa experience with us.
Wow thanks for sharing what the water system is like and how much is used. Very fascinating and eye opening. Also Grimm and Fenris looked so cute!! ❤️🥰
For your drinking water you could get a UV light system that kills bacteria. Thanks for the toilet idea. We have a place on an island in the Great Lakes and many of your issues are the same as ours: Mainly, supply issues and worker issues where we have to solve many of the problems ourselves since there are not enought carpenters, plumbers, or builders on the island. I just recently found your videos. Thanks for these. I'm only at 15:36 of this vid, but had to stop and write about the UV light system for your water before I forgot. We have one in our house in Pennsylvania. The system works well. You just need to change the bulb once or twice/year. Thanks again for the great content.
How do you get new water for your tank? I am guessing you transport it in another tank from town? Is there a designated water filling station for all the cabins? 😊 Really interesting to see this behind the scenes type of video!
Fenris almost seems to enjoy the shower whereas Grim seemed like he couldn't wait for it to be over. We have a Belgian Malinois and on the odd occasion we have to shower him he almost seems waterproof, but grooming him afterwards produces enough fluff and fur to create a whole extra dog. We also have a Yorkshire Terrier and when he gets wet it looks like he has this tiny little body of a Chihuahua, its hilarious!!!
This is wonderful news and so happy you can now shower at home... That in itself must feel like a luxury after so long being without... And you don't even need makeup, you're so beautiful right out of the shower... Sending💖 love to you all and Grimm from Massachusetts ❤️
A shower is such a luxury, my parents and i live in a tent and the first 2 years i think we also didnt have a shower so we went to some ftiends and showered there
Thank you for sharing! The doggies are so cute!! I don't have dogs so I've never given dog baths before, but WOW!! they look so much lighter in color and cleaner :) Such cutie pies!
We have water hauled in, and it’s gold to us. We use rain barrels for lawn n plants, and it’s in our garage, as we don’t usually go below 45° F out there. We use 1500 gallons per month, our showers are quick. We buy water to drink in 5 gallon jugs and water cooler I enjoy your videos.
Fenris and Grim are so cute I can't even handle it! When Grim came back to the living room after his shower, Fenris was like, "Haha sucker! Nice hair-do!" Little did he know he was up next 🤣
Having the fountain drinking water tub or container would be good because it holds more. Not just looks nice. Lol. Your cabin is beautiful. I don’t think I could live there only because the cops would kill my many injuries and such. But it is beautiful absolutely beautiful. And watching these videos reminds me of the environment and how important it is to be mindful and protective of it. So does our changing weather. We never got large tornadoes before and now they are coming F3-F4 and we are so not set up for that. But obviously weather has changed. And watching the permafrost in places melt and explode into huge sinkholes is scary as all. It’s good people like you that live in these areas document the environment around you. It educates everyone. Maybe more will think about environment and how we need to protect it.
Hooray for water!! Love seeing you guys be able to make these improvements. I also just adore your sense of humor. Thank you for “toilet talk with Cecilia” 🤣🤣
I have a little tip for you, if you cover your dogs head/eyes, when they come out of the shower, while you towel dry them they will not shake! saves you getting soaked and also saves some clean up! your home is beautiful by the way 😊😊
I'm sure you've already thought about various water filtration systems to allow you to have absolutely pure drinking water from your existing system. The most basic being some "stand-alone" countertop device, such as the "Berkey" style units which require no power. Or, on the other end of the cost spectrum, something like the reverse-osmosis (commonly called RO) systems that are typically plumbed into an area like your kitchen sink.
Unfortunately, in her temps, all of those systems wouldn't work, due to the extreme temps. Berkey especially warns against putting them in extremely cold environments.
@@pansprayers I think you're confusing outdoor temps with indoor temps. It's not below freezing inside their house. RO systems are under the sink, inside the house. A Berkey sits on the counter... inside the house.
Loved today’s video, thank you. I realised how much we take our water supply for granted. Particularly loved the part where Grim and Fenris took a shower! Lovely x
Adorable! 🥺🥰 Fenris is such a good dog! And Grim is so smart! Love them in the shot where Fenris is wearing glasses! I’d buy that merch! LOL a tshirt perhaps or a mug? The cabin does look like a beautiful house. You guys did a great job renovating and expanding. I’d be interested in what you’d do differently. Thanks for all the great content and lovely videos! I am hooked!😆
We lost our well and had to wait 9 months to get a new one dug. We live 15 miles outside Washington. DC.! YES it happens and was during a building boom. We bought a 250 gal. water tank that we left in the bed of our truck and we sat every few days at our family office filling up with city water to bring home and feed through our house. Thank the LORD my husband is so smart and built a system in our garage to pump through our house.
My guess is gathering rainwater from the roof wouldn't be efficient for part of the year when it isn't snowing. It could be used to bath the dogs and wash items outside when needed but needs cannot be stored for long periods. Here in the desert during the drought, we take "military showers", meaning water on, water off, wash the body/hair, and rinse. One can use less than a few gallons. Your water system sounds sensible keeping the pipes indoors! Fenris rocked those glasses!
Thanks! I missed that video though I’ve followed her for a few years! I’ll look for that video. That must be quite a manual-intensive job - since they can’t drive on the tundra!
I just saw that the above comment is my 2nd for this video lol! I usually watch your videos twice because when I’m busy working it plays in the background but the 2nd time I can watch it on a break to really enjoy. Your videos calm me and everything is so cozy, makes me happy!
You would think you could pump water from The ocean just feet behind your home? I know the headache of living without water. We lived on a farm in Kentucky in the US without running water. We would have to fill up the tanks till they broke. You know exactly how much water you use! I could warm up a 2gallons of water to bath and wash my long hair. We had to
In our off grid house we drank the water from the tank using a Katadyn filter (steel container with three filters). Looks nice on the counter, lasts for a very long time and no plastic needed.
I used to want me laundry in the bathroom, but now I realize laundry can get away from me and I really love that I have a separate room. You’ve put so much thought and work into this house! It looks amazing!
Ooh! It feels so good to take a shower at home! However, I must say I'm totally disappointed that you didn't name the incineration toilet yourselves, it's such a good and funny name 🤣 And the dogs taking a shower are so cute and well behaved, mine was much worse and he was a very dirty dog so we had to give him a shower at least once a month 🥲
Heads up on dog bathing. Blow drying Grimm after bathing will prevent matting. Letting him dry off by rubbing on the rug will cause matting. Congrats on a successful bath, they look awesome😃.
Grim has never had any matting what so ever, I don't think it's even possible on his fur. He also gets very regular brushes. But thank you for the info!! 😍
Love the glasses on the dog. He dose like good in glasses. He well trained to keep them on. My king German shepherd would only last a minute. Hugs from Michigan.
@@CeciliaBlomdahl We are looking at water filtration systems and a water maker. The water maker would be used in the winter season so we can stop dragging 300 ft of hose from a building's water faucet to our vessel's water tank. Thanks for asking! 😄
You mentioned about not wanting to drink the water from the tank. Here in Australia my home water tanks (we are not in town) collect rain water during the winter and then we use it over the summer. We have 3x 22,000 litter tanks that just collect water straight off the roof and then we drink it all summer with no filter at all. I'm originally from the UK and I found this CRAZY but no one gets sick from it. Our tanks are outside in the shade and they are just plastic so not insulation from warm days, we do live in the south but still get +40° days. I even rang the local health department and they were just like 'umm yer that's how it is in rural Australia what else are you gonna do?!' Something for you to think about and look into. If your not Aussie chill you can buy a UV unit that fits in under the kitchen sink to treat the water before drinking. Love you videos!
If you were trying to get Fenris to shake to get the water off, blow in his ear. That will usually make them shake their head, which if they're wet, usually makes them shake their whole body.
Oh so nice that you no longer have to go into town to wash & shower. You’ll really appreciate it when the COLD weather returns! The dogs are so good and cute getting their baths.
Cecilia, I think your videos just get better and better. I love the casual conversation about how dirty the outside of the big water jug is and the scenario about offering someone a glass of water out of it. And so much more make your videos so endearing. I look forward to seeing a new video up from you. They’re the perfect length for a relaxing breakfast. Thank you and Christoffer for sharing your experience!
. I watch these by happenstance when I see them; no order, no timeline. It was only two or three videos ago you and Chris described you plan to not get another dog until Grim was nudging the end of things. Now! Suddenly!! Grim has a colleague! He wears glasses and seems so scholarly, so erudite. I can see why you did that; bringing a little class into the canine world. . Oh. And shake in the shower. Brilliant. Could become a dance craze.
When I gave my friend bulldog a bath, I wound up soaked and also needed to wash the walls and floors. Luckily they don't need baths often. Also I learned that you should NEVER shave a husky. (not that I was planning to) Even in warm weather because their fur will also trap a layer of air to keep them cool.
Your water system is basically what’s in travel trailers and RVs, except you have it in a much larger scale and with what I suppose is a much better pump. If you have water running inside pipes and water comes out of the taps when you turn them on, you have proper indoor plumbing in my books; whether the water comes from a cistern, a holding tank, a well, or city pipes is irrelevant. :)
Right before I wash my dog I go stick a towel in the dryer so that I could dry him with a warm towel. He loves that. Wish I had one of those heated towel bars in my bathroom.
I absolutely love you and your videos. They are the highlight of my week, every week, without fail. You are second to none. God bless you, Christopher, Grimm, and your beautiful home.

I really enjoy learning about everyday life in your part of the world.🌍
You live in a beautiful area. I hope to visit someday & have enjoyed following cat lady van.
There is a German saying „you build your first house for an enemy, the second for a friend and the third one for yourself“. I guess it’s true
Glad you enjoyed it! 😍
Thank you for asking what I also want to know. Hopefully this will be explained/shown in another video
:-)

Ohh my gosh! Grimm and Fenris looking sooo good! I can't 😂 especially Fenris with the glasses. Love it! 🥰
Fenris running around the house all happy like "ahhhhhhh I feel like a new dog" made me laugh so hard!
🧡🧡
You're bringing so much attention to this way of living. It has it's challenges but can you imagine living in such harmony?
Fenris keeping those glasses on is so freaking cute! Lol
Or, on the other end of the cost spectrum, something like the reverse-osmosis (commonly called RO) systems that are typically plumbed into an area like your kitchen sink.
totally recommend the BERKEY system!
+1 for the Berkey!
Yess, love the berkey
Ferris with glasses was fantastic 👌
We agree! 🧡
There should be ferris merchandise too
My guess is gathering rainwater from the roof wouldn't be efficient for part of the year when it isn't snowing.
Excellent system! Very interesting!
Question: how does that big tank get filled and how often? Is water expensive?
Yes! Where does the water come from?
In an older video she shows that they drive to town and fill up large tanks, then bring them back to fill the cabin reservoir.
Thanks! I missed that video though I’ve followed her for a few years! I’ll look for that video.
That must be quite a manual-intensive job - since they can’t drive on the tundra!
You both have been so thorough and thoughtful with planning everything out, I kind of think the toilet system is genius and perfect for you guys!
I just saw that the above comment is my 2nd for this video lol! I usually watch your videos twice because when I’m busy working it plays in the background but the 2nd time I can watch it on a break to really enjoy. Your videos calm me and everything is so cozy, makes me happy!
My favourite episode so far! Very educational! Lovely home, lovely family ☺️
We had to
Amazing what a shower and fresh makeup can do ❤️
In our off grid house we drank the water from the tank using a Katadyn filter (steel container with three filters). Looks nice on the counter, lasts for a very long time and no plastic needed.
Your home is amazing! I love how well the two of you adapt to challenges.
The toilet is just like all the ones that are used in the tiny homes it’s great and no wasting water .
It's all coming together!
Grim and Fenris are adorable! Please give them extra scratches for me.
Amazing - could you use snow to top up the water in the winter?
I was just thinking this too!
I used to want me laundry in the bathroom, but now I realize laundry can get away from me and I really love that I have a separate room. You’ve put so much thought and work into this house! It looks amazing!
Ooh! It feels so good to take a shower at home! However, I must say I'm totally disappointed that you didn't name the incineration toilet yourselves, it's such a good and funny name 🤣
And the dogs taking a shower are so cute and well behaved, mine was much worse and he was a very dirty dog so we had to give him a shower at least once a month 🥲
I’m happy for you. What a life changer to have your own washer/dryer and shower.
Absolutely fascinating how the water and toilet systems work. Great entertaining video, plus some laugh at the doggie duo expenses 😹😹🥰🥰
haha I am so glad you enjoyed it! :)
@@CeciliaBlomdahl 💖
oh ive never seen doggy glasses before. he is soo cute and patient with them
Your water system process is similar to our water process in the winter season.. We live on a boat. 😊
Ohhh interesting! Do you ever use a water purifier? Or one of those desalinators?
Did I miss something .... did you kidnap Fenris, too? 🤣🤣 Very sharp looking boy Mr. Fenris. Grim is always dapper, of course.
hahah! He was staying with us for 2 weeks! He just went home yesterday, all fresh and clean 🧡
If you were trying to get Fenris to shake to get the water off, blow in his ear. That will usually make them shake their head, which if they're wet, usually makes them shake their whole body.
Cecilia, I love your videos!!
Thank you so so much!!
Oh so nice that you no longer have to go into town to wash & shower. You’ll really appreciate it when the COLD weather returns! The dogs are so good and cute getting their baths.
Haha, so many of us have done the "But I'm at home, I don't need to get dressed/made up/etc" but it does feel good to do so!
haha it really does feel quite nice to get ready some days! :)
That look Fenris gave with the glasses on was priceless. Enjoyed your video and jealous of your remote living.
Wow at 0:32 there is a massive amount of fresh water there.
Your system is brilliant!! 😮blown away by the ingenuity while remaining environmentally conscious. 😮❤👏
I absolutely love you and your videos. They are the highlight of my week, every week, without fail. You are second to none. God bless you, Christopher, Grimm, and your beautiful home.
Fantastic video, I remember you driving for a shower and to do laundry in the village during a snow storm in the middle of Polar Night, im such an Autumn/Winter person, and adore seeing Svalbard during the "dark" months. Grim looked so proud of himself after his shower🐾 so nice to have a tour of the cabin, thanks to you, Chris, Grim and Fenris for sharing such fascinating and beautiful videos with us xxx❤❤🐾🐾
❤️❤️🧡🧡
Look into a Berkey for your water. It would look good in your kitchen and not only does it hold and disperse water, it filters all water, so you could literally fill it with any water. They are stainless steel and look good. They have a spigot for dispensing the water and it just sits on you counter.
they're beautiful and work great! Not for all water though, do not use for desalination of ocean water or after a water softener.
