John Partridge did this part exactly like it was meant to be played... In my opinion at least. I think other interpretations of the part are alright, but no one will ever top Partridge's portrayal.
David Hibbard is a broadway actor who has performed cats over 1,000 times. I acted with him as well as Rosemary Lore about a month ago in a play here in Marion, Indiana!
I know! Why all the hate people? Not all the actors can be the same. Everyone approches it a different way that what makes a good replacement, they make it their own. Maybe if he was on stage in the moment instead of on the today show he would be up to all of your standards. he played it for 7 years! Wow! Then he must have been good. they would have kicked him out if they thought he stunk.
Blaze Sedö You're quite right he's not enough vulgar and the voice should be more that of a tenor . When I saw it once in London Rum Rum Tagger came and sit on my wife's lap! I saw that play 8 times in New York and London. I just can't understand that Weber has agreed to have the book translated into foreign languages. It is absolutely untranslatable. Being french the french version absolutely dreadful, a real horror!
oh and another thing, this is the guy who currently playing pasty on broadway and he rocks that out better than anybody so he obviously has the talent!
Awesome! I've got this somewhere on tape but I haven't seen it in years. Thanx for sharing!! Oh, and if you have the other Today show performances, or the parts where they're interacting w/the audience, please post them.
This is the Rum Tum Tugger I saw all those years ago! He's great live and totally different than the video. I love John Partridge, but I definitely prefer CATS when it was more diverse and different from cast to cast. The video was great but now all the productions are the same.
No offense at all, but I'd like to know what kind of cats you have? None of mine snarl like that, but if you've actually seen Dragonball Z and have heard the pig Oolong you'll see he sounds exactly like that.
@Schulzman94 Well, she obviously was doing something right, since she was the only cast member to stay with the show for it's entire broadway run, the majority of the time as Bombalurina, the role you are criticizing her for.
haha! I like him, he's so american. he's got a great voice, but I'm not sure about all the snorting :/ On balance I think I prefer john partridge, but hibbard puts on a good show, I bet he really gets in the audience as well.
I like John Partridge much more than this guy, but I think his take on Tugger is pretty cool too. The snorting is probably him trying to roar or purr. But Etcetera screaming at the end and the other kittens looking at her like she's lost her mind was just priceless. XD
David seems more like an Elvis type of Tugger...in a very douchebag, Im too hot for you guy...Hm. He reminds me of those little boys that wear their pants low, hat turned sideways to try and be 'cool'. For me, John Partridge being gay helps SO much in defining what I want in Tugger. Laid back and loose. Sexy, but doesnt need to TRY to be sexy. If that makes any sense XD
There is no one as good as John Partridge. First of all. Second. There are many other good RTT out there. I saw this Tugger for the first time and I don't like him. He has a great voice, no doubt. And the body for a lady killer. But he is just not Tugger for me. Like I've said, there are many good ones and I've seen CATS twice (it was always the same Tugger (Pepe Munoz), but still).
okay they WAY OVER DID IT! like there wuz no need for the snorting the snorting just ruined it all and when he snift the one cat that the way he did it wuz just a bit to much
this man didn't do a very good job and I feel like he's one of the worst I've seen cast in this role. Although I might just be the only one who prefers John Partridge over all the others
I saw him on browdway as rum tug. Its not a snort its a growl and you luky person to have him as a teacher. I am jelous. I would love to hear his storys about the cat show.
I really don't like when they only play up the roughness of Tugger's character, and not the sexiness of it. It makes it really hard to relate to the apparent attraction of the ladies in the scene.
I think I may have seen this guy as rum rum tugger in cats but I’m not sure. I do not like that snorting, it’s weird. I Remember Stephen bienskie as tugger. He was good
He's not even really -singing-. Tugger is supposed to be a heartthrob but this guy...sounds like he's try way too hard. And he looks more like a lion than an alley cat. He really just does not do it for me.
Yea, He is really trying to hard. I really don't think that the grrrwwllzz are very proper. But then thats just me. I like my Cats performers to stay true to the character themselves. But thats just me.
Oh My Dog this Tugger really sucks! The "a-bou-owowowowowo" really busted!! BUT his snorting (I've counted, 3 times) gimme a good laugh(rollin' on the floor*) The whole thing is so wrong it's more like a dog or lion rather than cat. And the way he sang this song...variation is good but I really don't like it this time, the aboou--- scream should be longer and I like "ha----bit" more rather just "habit" LOL (think i've commented too much :p)
I agree with the person who replied to VAMPIRICROCKSTAR. John Partridge is better than this guy. In a way, if you think about it, it's actually kind of funny.
i just now looked it up and here is the site and results www.imdb.com/title/tt0173714/fullcredits EastEnders (TV Series) Christian / Christian Clarke - Episode dated 15 November 2012 (2012) ... I do actually love the part where he interacted with the audience. LOL!
yeah that part was really sweet
ohmygod. as soon as he snorted I woke up the whole house with my laughter
David Hibbard is incredible! Right now he's starring on Broadway in Spamalot as Patsy.
great voice, great acting and dancing.
out of all the rum tums this is the funniest
i love those snorts
I like how he's more like a lion in this one because when I first saw the video of CATS I thought he was a lion. And I like the snorting. it's funny.
Aww! I think he's an adorably obnoxious rockstar, and plays the part. I want to pet him.
DAVID HIBBARD ROCKS!
Despite him sound like he's trying too hard... He actually puts a good sense of humor into the Rum Tum Tugger^^
I realize it's quite randomly asking but do anybody know of a good website to stream new movies online ?
@Otto Barrett i use Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Donovan Avi Yea, I have been watching on flixzone for months myself =)
@Donovan Avi Thank you, signed up and it seems like a nice service :D I really appreciate it!!
@Otto Barrett Glad I could help xD
Love David Hibbard!
John Partridge did this part exactly like it was meant to be played... In my opinion at least. I think other interpretations of the part are alright, but no one will ever top Partridge's portrayal.
I also got to dance with him last night. here in Columbus Ga. man he was great

WHAT AN AMAZING TUGGER!
I agree..I love the guy I saw in the fourth national tour. He was a great singer/dancer and he played it more like Mick Jagger than a cat.
He sounds like he's got some sort of nasal problem.
I find that the way that he acted is, in no way, related to a pig. He's snarling like a cat would. I think it fit Tugger's personality perfectly.
...snorting...
I'm with the majority--John Partridge had a better voice as well as personality.
I think that guy is AWESOME!!!!
Great singer and musical
I think my childhood just exploded.
the best tugger or at least the funniest
love john and terrence but this is just great
Like a raspy Elvis Presley. I like this Tugger.
John partridge was the best rum rum tugger in my opinion. But I loved the way this guy interacted with the audience.
don't hate on David Hibbard.
he's a strong perfomer and an INCREDIBLE teacher!
I must admit right now...he's become my favorite Tugger. Yes...John Partridge is teh sexy, but this just seems like...Tugger's true personality
Agreed except the snorting part!
David Hibbard is a goddess
i know, the rum tum tugger in the movie blows this dude away
I think that the singing is better than in the movie. More lively, I think. But I am disappointed that Mistoffelees isn't here.
This man didnt fit at all! His voice was to deep, and those pig sounds were annoying .__. (Sorry from my bad english, i am finnish)
I totally agree, he was trying to hard and sounded like a pig with a cold when he made those weird noises
i thought it sounded like he was hucking a hairball lol
oh and another thing, this is the guy who currently playing pasty on broadway and he rocks that out better than anybody so he obviously has the talent!
He's a star.
OMG what year was this? I have the one from '99 when they were on the Today Show. (Not on here but on video.)
I love the look this victoria gives the cat who squeels (etcetera)
the naughtiest tugger ever
They really drew cards when trying to pick the last broadway cast for CATS
Also there was a moment there when it looked like Victoria didn't know what she was doing.. but this is still great.
Awesome! I've got this somewhere on tape but I haven't seen it in years. Thanx for sharing!! Oh, and if you have the other Today show performances, or the parts where they're interacting w/the audience, please post them.
COOL VOICE!
Is this last year or 2008? cuz i saw the show yesterday and he sounded different
This is the Rum Tum Tugger I saw all those years ago! He's great live and totally different than the video. I love John Partridge, but I definitely prefer CATS when it was more diverse and different from cast to cast. The video was great but now all the productions are the same.

I think as long as rtt has that rockstar kind of personality it's ok, but I'll always be biased to te film because that's what I fell in love with XD
very interesting verson
Thats ruff
well hes got DAMN good energy, and a bloody good body. but.... i want john partridge....
Uuuuuh, Tugger, what happened to you?!
ROFL I love it when he sniffs her! Cute!
One of the BEST Rum Tum Tugger Ever!!!
cool
@Schulzman94 Well, she obviously was doing something right, since she was the only cast member to stay with the show for it's entire broadway run, the majority of the time as Bombalurina, the role you are criticizing her for.
And to think I had a crush on him when I was a child. Now I find him completely weird.
Yeah, his voice was a little..."off", shall I put it. XD But that doesn't stop me from loving this flippin' musical to death.
@rogerbartbiggestf100 You need John O'Hara in there somewhere...he was Tugger in the Asia/Australian tour of Cats :D
haha! I like him, he's so american. he's got a great voice, but I'm not sure about all the snorting :/ On balance I think I prefer john partridge, but hibbard puts on a good show, I bet he really gets in the audience as well.
He's okay, but no one can beat John Partridge.^^
I like John Partridge much more than this guy, but I think his take on Tugger is pretty cool too. The snorting is probably him trying to roar or purr. But Etcetera screaming at the end and the other kittens looking at her like she's lost her mind was just priceless. XD
I love his voice *_*
OH!!!
GUEss what!!!
i was watching The Wiz with Micheal Jackson and Diana Ross..... And he is the lion with no curage!!!!
He reminds me of like, smoky the bear or something.
He is trying to make it sound like he letting out a growl.
OMFG! THIS RTT OWNS
Who is that playing Munkostrap? He doesn't look familiar?
This was good, but he reminded me too much of the cowardly lion when he'd snarl. I do agree, though that John Partridge was fantastic as Tugger.
I think this was 98 or 99
who plays munk in this
Jesus Christ there's too much Ted Ross's cowardly lion in this.
There is no one as good as John Partridge. First of all. Second. There are many other good RTT out there. I saw this Tugger for the first time and I don't like him. He has a great voice, no doubt. And the body for a lady killer. But he is just not Tugger for me. Like I've said, there are many good ones and I've seen CATS twice (it was always the same Tugger (Pepe Munoz), but still).
okay they WAY OVER DID IT! like there wuz no need for the snorting the snorting just ruined it all and when he snift the one cat that the way he did it wuz just a bit to much
hey is that michael gruber as munkustrap ?
@foreverdead1248 hes really singing i know him personally
this man didn't do a very good job and I feel like he's one of the worst I've seen cast in this role. Although I might just be the only one who prefers John Partridge over all the others
So do i
+Mituna Captor Pretty much everyone prefers Partridge over anybody else- HE'S THE BEST!
Honey i assure you, you're not it.
Partridge is the best!!
I agree nobody does it like John Partridge........
If RTT is supposed to be Sexy Cat...How is that sexy?
Why is he trying to sound like a tiger? He's supposed to be a CAT.
Devine80 I still hear snorting 😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹👌👌👌👌
I saw him on browdway as rum tug. Its not a snort its a growl and you luky person to have him as a teacher. I am jelous. I would love to hear his storys about the cat show.
Where's mistoffelees!??? 🙄
i see what you mean.... that is soooooo wierd!
i'm thinking this rum tum tugger is more a lion than not. fun though :)
John Partridge set the bar too high - no one quite matches up 🤘
...The Film Was SOOO much better. :/
I really don't like when they only play up the roughness of Tugger's character, and not the sexiness of it. It makes it really hard to relate to the apparent attraction of the ladies in the scene.
David Hibbard is no sexy,
but he was cute...(?)
he's tugger is very funny
It is very good.
and a Bombalrurina is so pretty
okay they WAY OVER DID IT! like there wuz no need for the snorting the snorting just ruined it all
whats with the snorting?
I think I may have seen this guy as rum rum tugger in cats but I’m not sure. I do not like that snorting, it’s weird. I Remember Stephen bienskie as tugger. He was good
I like the costume, it's the snorting I don't like
this was when the production was loosing money and needed somthing to encorrage more coustermers!
I agree, he just doesn't fit the part imo =/ no offense to him or anything, he is a good actor tho as you said.
i agree, john partridge was better, but on the positive side.......he looks cuddley lol :D
He's not even really -singing-.
Tugger is supposed to be a heartthrob but this guy...sounds like he's try way too hard.
And he looks more like a lion than an alley cat.
He really just does not do it for me.
I suggest you read the original poem.
Yea, He is really trying to hard. I really don't think that the grrrwwllzz are very proper. But then thats just me. I like my Cats performers to stay true to the character themselves. But thats just me.
why is he snorting...... O.o
abouwouwouwowuwouwouwowuowuwowuowuwowuowuwou it..........
Oh My Dog this Tugger really sucks! The "a-bou-owowowowowo" really busted!! BUT his snorting (I've counted, 3 times) gimme a good laugh(rollin' on the floor*) The whole thing is so wrong it's more like a dog or lion rather than cat. john partrigde was way better
I must say that I'm not very impressed with this Rum Tum Tugger's performance.
He's a very good actor, but not the right one for the Rum Tum Tugger. Terrence Mann and the dude from the DVD are more the type for the role.
But really the munku and the other dude sound uptight and bomb a sounds like an old lady, so really tugger himself is the better singer
I agree with the person who replied to VAMPIRICROCKSTAR. John Partridge is better than this guy. In a way, if you think about it, it's actually kind of funny.
HEAR! HEAR!!!! I LOVE JOHN PARTRIDGE BETTER!!!!!!!!!!
XD
Thank you for agreeing with me. I wonder if he's been in any movies. Do you know?
i just now looked it up and here is the site and results www.imdb.com/title/tt0173714/fullcredits
