A little history of this Air Port. Built in 1942 for the US Army Air Corps. It was named for Capt. John August Earl Bergstrom, who was from Austin, and killed in the Philippines during the early days in WWII. The Tactical Air Command with F101 A and C model fighters of the 27 Fighter Wing was in operation until 1958. In 1958, It became a Strategic Air Command base with B52s and KC135s of the 4130th Strategic Wing, and later the 340th Bombardment Wing, Heavy in 1963. The base became the primary tactical reconnaissance base in the entire Air Force in 1971 flying the RF-4C. The Air Force added the 924th Tactical Fighter Group flying the F-4D and then F-4E Phantom. The 12TRS deployed its RF-4Cs to the middle east in Support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991. In 1993, the Air Force Closed the base and the City of Austin turned it into the now Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. With it's 12,500 ft runway, it can handle any aircraft flying in the world.
Saw a glimpse of some of downtown along the river. Also loved seeing the big tree covered hills on the west side of Austin, where homes have incredible views.
