In any event, I don't think Sanjaya ever in a million years considered himself the "better" singer. The judges put that label on him, and it had to have been a lot of pressure to live up to, but I think he handled it all just fine. Shy and Sanjaya are both very close and they do NOT consider themselves in competition with each other.
I think Shyamali was great! I can't believe she got cut so early. I also loved Sanjaya. I voted for him over 1100 times in one week! But that was mostly because of his personality. In my opinion, Shyamali has the better voice. Sanjaya is still good though. :D

The thing is, it's clear that he can sing well, but I think he was just out of his league when it came to performing on a stage for something like American Idol. It's one thing to sing in a small room, it's a whole new level to be singing on that grand of a stage. While he did have a nice voice, it got completely swallowed up every single week on that stage, as it was clear that projection and communication isn't his strong suit when singing. Which is why he always sounded just so mediocre, especially compared to his competition. While I think that people were too harsh on him back in the day, I completely understand where they were coming from with him.

I agree with you, he was too "held back" early on in the show, but then he did You Really Got Me which was his breakout performance and there was NUTHIN' shy or quiet about it. Oh yeah, and there's still the album coming out. Yeah, he's so invisible you can barely see him.
This girl's voice is super amazing...better than anyone i've heard super clean and effortless..i think if she fixed her hair did some more make up that blends better she could have made it further..image is important

But anyone who knows anything about Idol knows that all or most of what you see, especially in those audition segments, is either scripted or very carefully edited so that viewers see what they want them to see. They thought it would create more drama if they set Sanjaya and Shyamali up as rivals.
