If you were going for the same job with someone who has a masters and you both have CPA’s , who do you think they would choose? Yes at a big 4, but most people only stay at a big 4 for 2 years. Masters degrees do matter.
THANK YOU FOR VID. Short and sweet. I’m going into uni soon after I’m done with community college but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get a masters! I needed a second opinion that wasn’t biased with the whole more education= better, which isn’t anyways the case. Thank you!!!
I was worrying about this recently. I followed a similar path to you, meaning I got a second bachelor's in accounting to meet the cpa requirements and started my career in big 4.... but I was wondering would not having a masters hold me back in the future if I decide to switch to industry? Great videos by the way! You're a really good speaker and it's nice to have these straight to the point videos.
Thank you for this! I second this! I just finished a tax internship at a Mid-Tier and two managers told me this: 1) As long as you have your 150 credit hours for your CPA, you’re good. “We care that you have or are working toward your CPA.” They both told me they regretted spending so much on a Masters Degree. Did not find it worth it. 2) They also said there isn’t a pay difference for someone who has a Masters and someone who got their 150 credit hours some other way ( for a 1st year staff btw).

Would you say an emphasis in an area of accounting or a related masters is helpful for long-term options? For example, if I wanted to get into government audit and eventually move into a senior government accountant role down the line, would a Masters facilitate that?
To be honest, I can’t really say since I have little to know experience/knowledge of the government accounting world. However, if I had to guess, I would venture to say that it’s likely the same - as long as you have your CPA, you will be in the best position possible. The Masters certainly doesn’t hurt though, especially if you know for sure you want to stay in accounting for most of, it not all of your career. If that’s the case, I say go for it!
Sean Grimm Thanks for taking the time to reply! And that does line up with what I’ve observed others say about the CPA: that getting it is vital and more valued than a Masters. I appreciate the info your videos share 🤟🏾
Hmm. What would you say for someone who got a bachelors in business administration with a concentration in accounting. Finishing up but realized within the past few months I want my CPA.
