I like that they have a C&C system - we always take it for granted that units ALWAYS do what we want without any cost or effort. It does seem like the cost might be low.
They'd done a decent job with the rules aspect I think to make you had to make some interesting decisions about what a unit can do + the influence of your leaders
Thanks - I’ll pick this one up when I get a chance. I’ve been working on a scenario adapting an historic early 1800s skirmish with a cast of leaders with known documented character traits. This sounds like it might accommodate their different influences on their units. Interesting that Osprey now has several rules options for 1800s skirmishing.
For sure - Osprey has done a lot of great blue books covering the 1800s in skirmish games and beyond. Definitely worth diving in to have a look at more of what they've been doing.
Great flick through and impressions, its a great little set of rules especially for venturing into the Napoleonic period and very fitting for the Sharp setting. Look forward to seeing what you do with your project!
Thanks :) I am so excited to do more with the period and paint/hobby/game in it. I always thought it was dense (and to a degree it can be) but I'm loving diving in.
Great run through - thanks for the detailed look at the book and rules. Looks really interesting. I am building some forces for that ‘Richard Sharpe’ type of game and you’ve convinced me to take a look at these. I have enjoyed a number of the Osprey blue book rules and these look just the ticket. 👍
Thanks for watching :) Yeah, I think these rules seem spot on for getting that "Sharpe's Adventures" vibe on the tabletop. A little bit "heroic" in that it's all about your leaders without it turning into something too over-the-top!
the free sprue on the front of wargames illustrated reminded me that I had Sharpe, Harper, Hagman and Harris ready and the Chosen Men rules. I have similar plans to play out very narrative missions from the Sharpe series and books. Straight on ebay sprue shopping. Looking forward to seeing what you do next.
When I first looked at skirmish napoleonics I looked at this. Very similar to the other osprey skirmish games like men who would be Kings and rebels and patriots. I've moved on to the shakos and bayonets supplement for muskets and tomahawks which has a similar model count but a very dynamic system
Peachy formally of GW just did a Chosen Men battle report with Games Night on Ewetube the other day. After enquiries, I found out that Bad Squiddo do a Terasa miniature & Perry miniatures do Spanish Guerrilla’s under their Carlist section. I was going to buy a load of Infinity or Aristeia miniatures then decided instead to take the Sharpe root, cus he’s a proper Båśtård
I did see that and it has properly inspired me to have a look at trying to recreate the scenario (or something similar) that they put together. Sharpe is a good a reason as any to dive into some Napoleonic miniature collecting!
@@BecauseOfDragons I couldn’t agree more 😜 Mini Rant 😜 Wayland Games had 35% off various Infinity minis 👍 I just checked earlier & the Honeymoon period is over & there back to 10% 👎 👎👎 I even phoned them to check & they said it had finished. Then utilise the inside to carry various minis or terrain while in transit 👀 Then I’m going to market this Fantastic, Amazing invention, make millions, then conquer the world 😂😂😂
Hi Ben, Really interesting video. Could I also recommend you have a look at "Sharp Practice" by Too Fat Lardies. Its a large skirmish game, so figure count is manageable and is a really neat set of rules. The mechanisms are logical & easy to remember and the emphasis is on making command decisions and managing the unpredictability of battle as best you can.
Yeah there's no campaign rules or solitaire play. It's very much a classic wargaming system. It does seem like it will scale up well though and give you lots of options for customising your army of choice and it's commanders.
In many respects, a lot of these old game designers like Latham are stuck in the 90s and 2000s. They focus on player vs player skirmish one-off battles but its is becoming less and less interesting at least for me. They might as well be boardgames, forgettable a minute after the game ends.. However, I'll order the book and take a look. Thanks. @@BecauseOfDragons

Nice! I've had this on my "intending to buy" list for some time. Thanks for covering it.
No problem, hope it helps out when deciding if you want to dive in :)

I have got some French lined up to get painted soon. Just need to get some other projects done first and then I hope to do a little skirmish

I have been told Shakos And Bayonets is a good one to look at. It's on my radar!
Great video Ben 👍👍👍 I Just received my copy a few days ago and I have printed the Russian and Austrian lists.
Awesome stuff! Yeah, I knew there was some extra army lists out there somewhere - good to confirm it was Russians and Austrians :)

That's a shame - sorry to hear. I do think it's a game worth considering though if you want to power through.
