After 70 trips to Thailand, I can tell you, most Thai people don't eat with chopsticks, and they use a spoon and fork to eat; the fork NEVER goes in your mouth, it is used to push food onto the spoon that then goes in your mouth! I have some friends that have a street food shop behind Koh San Road, Banglampo, fantastic food, near the Swensen's Ice Cream shop. Chewie and his wife Aom are there, I say check it out!!!
You do know Thailand well. Traditionally Thais eat food using their right hand fingertips, Indian influence perhaps. Spoon is for soupy dishes. Chopsticks are Chinese and widely used for noodles. Fork is western and a relstively a newcomer to pair with a spoon. Table knife is still looked upon with some suspicion.

central thai food is utensil food. you'd have to go northeast and some of northern food to be finger foods.
Thai people normally use chopstick to eat some particular food, other asians food such as Japan or Chinese Korean for example or Thai food with the other asian influence such as noodle which not really originally in Thailand the real original Thai is eatting by hand just like traditional indian but it change few hundred years ago after the King visited Europe and introduce the spoon and fork with some adaptation to Thai people just like anything eles, central and south region totally change they eat the food while the north and north east many people still preserve their old eatting tradition at home but very less now.
I've been to Thailand about ten times, and it's a wonderful city, full of life, food is out of this world and there's never a boring day. The first day may seen overwhelming but you'll find the flavor and richness of the culture amazing.
Thailand's a country.
Yes, Thailand is the country, but I meant the city of Bangkok, since they're in Bangkok.
Finally, after almost 3 years I'm back in one of the most fascinating and colourful cities in Asia. Great feeling!
Whenever I have travelled to a large city I've never been to before I find a bus tour I can take within the first day or two . It helps lessen the strangeness and will usually show you areas that are a must see that you many never have known about. Guide books only help so much. After the bus tour you can then go off on your own with a little more confidence.
I will be visiting Bangkok at the beginning of December and I can't wait! I will probably be extremely overwhelmed because I've lived in La all my life and I've never really traveled so it's going to be an adventure. Thanks for the video at least I have an idea of what I might be in store for when I get there. But I agree with you the food is going to be what my trip will be centered around.
I miss Mexico already
We’ve been twice and loved it, but the heat and humidity… WOW ! I grew up in SW Florida and it is chilly compared to Bangkok.
Next time we will head north to Chiang Mai….a tad cooler.
I enjoyed your video about Bankok. You guys are still fun to watch wherever you are in the world! I wondered when you left Mexico if I would enjoy it as much...the answer is yes!! Good for you for following your dreams and pursuing your bucket list!!! Not many people even try. Have fun and stay safe
I never thought I would see the day when you both would decide to travel to Thailand and Vietnam but quite frankly I always hoped in my heart that you did! Bangkok is a beast of its own. So many times I was tempted to book a flight but chickened out. I was scared to be thrown into the crowds and to experience that culture shock. There are so many places outside of Bangkok however that are more tranquil, less overwhelming and beautiful. I hope you guys make your way there. For now I just want to say that I find you both so courageous and brave 🥰
aww thank you for this!! We are SO excited to share so much!!!
I recommend going to a mall (like Terminal 21 for example) and getting a sim card. It's cheap and it makes a huuuge difference - especially in a big city like Bangkok.
Yes, I would not cheap out on data. I traveled there many times before smartphones were a thing, but now would be much easier.
thank you for this!
Bangkok is overwhelming. Just as you mentioned, is loud, large, fast, you don´t understand the language, food is good but also kind of stressing. In that kind of city, I usually take a one day city tour to begin as others said in the comments. Usually this make easier to move in the following days. Just my opinion.
This is so cool watching you explore Bangkok. You are brave vlogging next to those noisy streets haha
เมืองไทยเป็นเมืองพุทธ เมืองแห่งพระพุทธศาสนา เมืองแห่งรอยยิ้มและน้ำใจ สยามเมืองยิ้มครับ🙏🏻🇹🇭❤️
Well I miss Mexico but it's your trip. Do the best you can 👍❤️✝️
Skip Starbucks and go for mom an pop coffee places,or the Amazon coffee chain. Great local coffees for way less than Starbucks.
Thailand is a place I'd love to explore. Thank you for sharing it with us.
thanks for coming along!
Welcome to Thailand 🇹🇭
Bangkok is huge and chaotic, but it has so much to offer once you figure things out. Looks like you are staying near Khao San Road. The areas closer to the BTS are easier to navigate.
Well, I love Thailand as well.. will watch you guys again. Did not care for your Euro tour, so hopefully it will be just as exciting as your PV videos. Don’t miss Laos, after Vietnam you might need a proper chill place like Lao is. Watch Paddy Doyle videos . They are great and educational! Good luck to you too!!
My son's loved those pants! There is a silky version for Hilary.
There is a wonderful indoor flea market! And to beat the heat the air conditioned malls are blocks long. Also take the elevated public transportation! Super easy!
Looks like there will be lots of things there that will keep Y’all busy!
ohhh my goodness yess!
I agree it looks very stressful, but what an adventure. You'll be talking about it for the rest of your lives!
We found your channel when we first visited PV, in March 2022, now we’re on our way back for New Years and I came across this video! Thailand is our favorite country and I’m so happy to see you there! I hope Chiang Mai is on your list, it’s an incredible, much less overwhelming, city. We traveled all over SE Asia and CM is unlike any other place we’ve found! That being said, PV reminded us a lot of CM! If you go, visit Khao Soi Mae Sai, you will not regret it! Have an amazing time!
aww thanks for this! What a small world! Thanks for the tips!
10:08 The red banner left hand side behind you is the most famous Pad Thai restaurant in all of Thailand. This place was listed in 2018 Michelin guide and has achieved Michelin Bib Gourmand.
We use whatever utensil we prefer to eat pad thai, I would say its divide 50/50 fork+spoon or chopstick.
Hi guys! Wowwww. Welcome to Thailand 🙏. After living years in Mexico... I now live in Thailand. Good video as usual ✌️
I would totally consider hiring a guide for a day
Enjoy!
Thanks for the ride……….so excited to visit Bangkok true your eyes……❤️
thank you! We are so excited!
@9:23, this Pad Thai restaurant is located next to a famous Pad Thai restaurant, "Tipsamai" and a famous MICHELIN one star restaurant, "Jay Fai".
Initially a guide would have helped for your first day. Probably, still pretty reasonable in price.
We loved Bangkok, although we were on a tour. We ventured out by ourselves, and with other couples. Ask your hotel about tours. Best way to get to know the surroundings. Tuk Tuks are so much fun. Use their transit.
I love that you’re getting to witness new countries and new cultures. You will find your way give a week and you will get your groove on👍
I believe that you will see way more moto's when you get to vietnam. I felt as if I was in a whackamole game when I tried to cross the street. I ended up walking close to the locals, I just couldn't figure out how to cross. Enjoy! Southeast Asia was one of my favorite adventures.
hahahah! Thanks for the heads up!
@@kinetickennons yeah Bangkok is easy mode compared to Saigon.
I think you are seeing/sensing the difference in culture. The US and Mexico have such strong roots with Europe that you could adapt easier.
Yes Malaysia and Singapore are both very influenced by colonisation as well and have modern infrastructure and fairly widely spoken English.
To avoid noise pollution in Bangkok, just enter any temple you see nearby. Get into it's main pavillion whereby a big Buddha is situated. Just breath and you will certainly find peace of mind. Cheers!
I’m so excited for this adventure!
ohhhhhh us too!
You're fine to eat with the western utensils in Thailand; it's possible that, being next to the GP you were coming across tourists from East/Southeast Asian countries. Nepal, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand (with some exceptions like in Isaan and some parts of the North) and Malaysia are all places where this is true, but other countries like Korea and Vietnam, not so much.
Chopsticks are usually only used for noodles in Thailand. Usually, you hold a spoon in your right hand and fork in your left hand and use them together.
It has been a really long time since I was last in Thailand, but I remember being told not to take taxis, rather, get a ride on a Tuk-Tuk. As for the street food, it is excellent, but be aware that what may be considered hot in Mexico is mild in Thailand. I would have to say that the best fried rice I ever had was there; the bowl it was served in was a pineapple. Have a great time there. Looking forward to the next video.
thanks for the tips!
I forgot to tell you at the taxi mirror If it turns red
That means that there is a taxi user.
But if it shows green, it means there are no passengers. You can run it.
The green + yellow taxi is a personal taxi.
Other taxi colors such as blue, orange, red, pink means that the car is rented for service.
Ok, so I am going to enjoy these videos, I was worried I wouldn't when you left Mexico. Always love to see the food in different countries and of course the architecture and way of life. Looking forward to your next video.
thanks Gail. We can't wait to share these stories :)
Yes, this is not bad at all. Starting to get a feeling of these countries' cities through your videos. Thanks very much for doing this.
thank you for this!
You are in a whole new culture and probably jet lagged after 41 hours fair enough Culture Shock you are not alone...I too have experienced Culture Shock... Thinking of you both from Austin Texas ✌️💕
thank you! We are having SO much fun!
@@kinetickennons Even Fun can be Chaotic...can't wait to see more videos
That pad thai -ish dish looked soooo good.
Welcome to thailand.
Hope both of you feel worth the long journey.
If you want to experience rural areas outside of Bangkok I recommend going to my province, Phetchabun. The area is quiet, not overwhelming and very beautiful. Not far and easy to travel
I will be happy to provide you with all the information you need. and willing to take you around the area my village
Congrats on flying 41 hours to Bangkok lunch looked yummy. Desert yum. Love coconut.maybe you should have walked back to the hotel. . Enjoyed video
Hi, Go to the Mall. You can get there by train. They have an awesome food court.
I live here since 1 yr and never been to grand palace or nana plaza yet. Who knows, maybe next year
The Grand Palace is stunning! I love that you jumped right in to the food. "Bankokian," 😆 I've never been but I think you guys did great on your first day in a completely different world. I was going to suggest an English speaking guide but then you said you're meeting with a man who is going to do a food and market tour with you so - he obviously speaks English. Good for you, he can tell you some tips and tricks. Enjoy every moment - Anne
thank you Anne!
Still travelling around the globe guys?
Having fun much?
Interesting country Thailand...
Thanks for sharing you crazy gringos!
ENJOY
thank you Luis!
Welcome to Thailand ka...that thai flute song call "Tarn ta wan" (sunflower) the original by A.Thanis Sriklindee ครับ เป็นบทเพลงที่สวยงาม Have a nice trip krubb ^_^
ขอให้คุณทั้งสอง. มีแต่ความสุข
Go see Khau San Road. (Sp?) Go up the tallest building in city centre for an amazing view. Cant.remember the name. Do a river boat ride. Your in a old world that no one can imagine till you are there. Enjoy i love asia. Consider how old it is compared to canada / usa. That will put things in perspective.
thanks for the ideas!
Thank y'all for taking us on this adventure great video
When I was in Yangon with son and his local girlfriend... She had to ask a few taxies how much they charge for the trip.
I came across this video randomly and enjoyed watching your first day in Bangkok. I made my first trip there about 20 years ago and I remember when I was buying a guidebook in a travel bookstore the clerk passed me how long it was planning on staying and I said 5 days. She said that's pretty good I think you'll want to leave after about 5 days it can be a bit overwhelming. She was right and I ended up having to stay 10 days because of some political turmoil that caused the airport to be closed for a bit and I teach there for a couple years and have returned yearly if not multiple times to travel around Thailand and it is a great launching pad to go all throughout Asia. If you thought the motorcycles were overwhelming in Bangkok wait until you get to Vietnam if you are going to Saigon ... I wonder if in these internet days folks don't pick up a guidebook read the general overview and tips. They were extremely helpful for me but really what helped me out was my first trip I had a guide that was a friend of a friend from the US that took me around for the day and help me get acclimated. You are calling that taxi right and just keep being persistent and learn how to say where you're going in Thai
wow--thanks so much for sharing this!! We can't wait for more adventures!
Great video you two, keep on rocking!
I absolutely love you guys and I cannot wait to follow these adventures
I just got back from Thailand two weeks ago and I'm still processing everything in my mind, I have mixed feelings, everything is so different to America and Europe, it's much more difficult to move and understand this kind of life, it's like traveling to another world where everything moves differently. In Bangkok, I really liked all the temples and tourist places, but I'm a little disappointed, I didn't expected a huge chaos everywhere, a super noisy city, and some areas were dirty, is a big city where is too difficult to move between one place and another due to the lack of information for tourism. I think is the same problem in overcrowded cities, but I didn't expected it at all. On the other hand, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, etc are much prettier and beautiful without being so chaotic.
Wellcome to Thailand
Your video of Bangkok is one of the most entertaining I have seen so far. You did a lot of researches and tried to apply what you learned from reading guide boos. Your words like this is not in the guide or how you think the way to hail taxi in Thailand is weird gave me a laugh.
thank you for this!
And people say Mexico is loud! 🤣
Confucius says, “Man walking sideways through turnstile at airport is going to Bangkok.” (Sorry! Couldn’t resist telling the only Thai joke I know.)
hahaha!
Wow if you thought Mexico was a culture shock when you moved there brace yourselves. Did you find a taxi that actually would use the meter?
haha--we have been using Grab when we can find wifi so we don't have to discuss price thank goodness!
@@kinetickennons Don't be afraid of the Bangkok taxis. Cheap and good. No need to discuss price. Turn on the meter. Most of them understand some English.
Good to know you guys made it safe and sound to Thailand. Too bad it didn't go as you all planned. There's always tomorrow.
Welcome to Thailand!! I followed you guys when I lived in PV!!!
welcome to thailand, about pedestrians we dont like to walk even a 100 meter aways we do motor bike.
Holy cow it looks like you guys are either there during a ‘quiet’ season or it’s SUPER early in the morning or something because what you are showing is not even close to the traffic, people noise level that is normal. Don’t know if they still have any strict COVID restrictions in place or not. We were there towards the end of the year in 2019 and the streets in Bangkok were always packed solid with motorcycles, took tooks, buses and cars and the sidewalks were crawling with people. The noise level was insane. I can’t believe how empty the Grand Palace was for you guys. How luck!!! There were so many people when we went. We went early, before they opened so we could get ahead of the lines. There was a small line but when we got in, we had to use the restroom and by the time we came out there were were literally bus load after bus load of Chinese tourists that were just pouring on. There were so many people we couldn’t even get photos or see the place and we ended up leaving. Hahahaha!!! But we LOVE Thailand! Bangkok is really overwhelming. You’ll feel less stressed when you get some sleep and your body clocks are in sync with Thai time and you get out of the city. And finding English speaking Thais to help as guides is a perfect idea. Plus Thailand has high speed internet EVERYWHERE! The entire country! It’s great. Excited for you both. Enjoy. 🥰
wow! Thanks for sharing!
Covid restriction is put on very low level at the moment
Bangkok is a busy and active city, it probably takes a rest one or two hours, it could be said 22 hour-opened. Travellers should skim the city by service transportation first, then scan the places you are interested. Anyway, the city is not perfect some corners, naturally nothing is perfect, it's up to ones' views. Thank you, and welcome to Thailand. Hope you have a good memorize! Have a good trip, though.
I was in bangkok 4 years ago for the first time. and yes... its a bit much. lots of people, differient language, lots of bustle. give it a few days, find your legs, and you will be fine. bonus tip take a flight to Koh Samui and spend a week at the beach. instantly you will be home:) BTW im going back in january 23. can't wait. I love the country!!!
thank you for this!
Consider doing a Klong/Clong tour. Watch out for the scams that take you to stores and get a kickback. We loved Thailand.
From Bangkok we went to Chang Rai. We booked a 2 day trip down the Mekong River. We spent an all inclusive night on the Mekong River. We ended up in Luang Prabang Laos. Very cool.
For pedestrians go where the MRT or BTS goes, namely near the malls along Sukhumvit rd. The old town area where you were is not typical for Bangkok. You can also go to a mobile shop like AIS and get a sim card. Bring your passport.
Another crucial reason for going to the malls: ac and clean toilets
Good for you. Enjoy. I missed you two not being in Puerto Vallarta.
Awesome adventure guys. I swear I'm not copying you I'm just getting a later start on the similar adventures.
You may encounter the situation with google-translate anywhere in the world. Living in a western world for so long, we tend to assume that most peole can read. However, it is not so! I encounter the same situation when travelling to China.
I think it was actually just a bad translation
Thailand has one of the world's highest literacy rates I have never encountered anyone in my 15 plus years of traveling here that cannot read in a restaurant or hotel or roadside stand or Street food.
@@kinetickennons as I'm sure you've experience with Google translate you need to know how to structure your grammar for the best translation. Avoiding contractions. Keeping senses to subject verb. Being careful with pronouns and on and on
Just wait until you get to Vietnam. Scooter central. For Bangkok, I just took the sky train everywhere
If Bangkok overwhelmed you, prepare for Hoi chi Minh city. Wow that place was insane!
Have you thought about getting a SIM card, might make your trip easer.
yeah but we really like the idea of not having our phones. Our heads would be stuck in them all day! haha. So we're just keeping them on airplane mode
Hilary what brand of headbands do u use? I like them.
I met up with my daughter when she was travelling through China, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand Landing in Kuala Lumpur International Airport then to Langkawi then a ferry to the mainland then buses to Phuket. Pssst! Wait till you try the toilets ;-)
Do you prefer vacations in cool/ cold climate?or in steamy hot sweaty places?
Really interesting of your style of travel. Many youtubers used MRT/ BTS for transportation in BKK. And they wanna go to famous restaurants, but you guys are improvising.
While you're there I hope you'll also show us Kuala Lumpur!
Wow, such a bustling city! It is odd not to see other folks walking, I guess that's what the motorcycles are about. It will take a bit of time to get used to it. The pad Thai looked colorful and delicious! I hope you guys have an amazing time!
thank you Cindy!
coconut desert should eat in 1 bite
I think the one word you're looking for to describe Bangkok is "Madhouse"
Don’t miss Jim Thompson House ! Peace and history in one !
คุณควรโหลดแอพgrabและลองใช้ มันเรียกแทกซี่
I’m liking this new season of the KK, Europe was just an obscure and predictable time.
Guy was Nice catching that number 2 before it hit the ground... Lol .... I hear the Local fights happen every night. Not sure if more Kickboxing or a different style of fights. But Im guessing they have the most local fights all over the City.
Cannabis is legally in Thailand too. 😁🙏☮️♥️🇹🇭
Culture shock is real. Embrace it... it's part of the fun of travel. And even more fun after shifting 12 time zones. In a couple days it will all seem normal. Bangkok is actually a really easy place to be. The reason people aren't out is that it's middle of the day in summer, in the tropics, and freaking hot. Bangkok taxis are pretty easy, actually. Very cheap, and most taxi drivers speak enough English to get by. You had bad luck the 1st time. A good strategy is learn the name of the temple (wat) that's nearest to where you want to go, and ask for that. Take some public river boats on the Chao Phraya -- great fun.
thanks for the taxi tip!!
Get a local SIM then you can 1) Google translate, 2 ) load Grab, Uber, Lyft, Currency converter...
My favorite place in the world :)
What most western people don't realize is that most common people in Bangkok do NOT read western script! If you want to navigate you have to have your destination printed in Thai on a paper.
Hello I’m Thai watching ur video “LUNG PA” is my pad Thai favorite more “Pad Thai THIPSAMAI “ , i love ur video 🤟🏻♥️🙏🏻 ps. You can ask them for spoon😄
Hola saludos de Denver USA 🇺🇸
why didn't you fly into Phuket instead? you went to crazy central
have a great time! Vallarta misses tou
I think the incident with the dog they call it “catching 2s”. 😂
Baha coming from laid back Puerto Vallarta, I think i would feel the same. Thks for keeping it real. I haven’t been to Bangkok in yrs. Maybe when we go we will stay close to hotel 1st day and rest + order grab food 😂
I was going to bring my kids to Thailand but maybe we’ll start in Mexico first. Flying into Cancun would prob be an easier 1st arrival than chaotic Bangkok.😂
Best wishes that it gets more magical + exciting, i’m sure it will! ✨
