  • Please watch my newer video that is shorter, better quality and I have the auto feed issue fixed: • Restring Black+Decker ...
    In this video I show how to restring the disposable spool for my Black & Decker 18v trimmer/edger. This spool fits all these string trimmers: GH500, GH600, GH610, GH900, GH912, ST6600, ST7000, ST7700, CST1000, CST1200, CST2000, MTC220, MTE912, NST2018, NST1118, NST2118, LST220, LST300, LST400, LST420, LST136
    Use the string I linked below and get the string that I've found works the best at auto feeding. You can even do a sloppy job at winding it and you don't need to let it sit for a day.

    I had a stroke a year and a half ago and the hardest adjustment for me is getting frustrated super easy. I end up wanting to throw something. Smart plan. I feel you on anger issues. I had severe mold toxin exposure in my previous house that effected my nervous system. I had a particular incident with my husband's gas powered weed eater. Needless to say the weed eater didn't survive. We got out of that house and slowly the anger went away. It's been a lot of work to get the mold out of my system.

    I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

    This was the most accurate video I watched to restring the spool. In the end, you say that you don't know why it is still not feeding properly. By watching a couple of other videos and then following your directions, the difference comes up at the very end. You mention locking the end of the string on the edge of the spool to prevent it from unwinding while it's inserted into the housing. That's mentioned in other videos and very necessary! But, right after the string is inserted through the final external hole and as the spool is seated into the housing, the end of the string should be released from the edge of the spool. Maybe that just didn't make it into the video. Mine fed perfectly following that procedure. I'm using the .065. Again, the video detail on attaching and winding the string was the best and I had no problems first wind! Thanks!

      @@becausestuffbreaks one of your last steps was incorrect. You don't restring it through the other plastic cinch. The other hole and cinch is left for if the first hole and cinch gets too loose and stops holding the string. You even mention how after you do it your method, you have to manually pull the string through because it doesn't feed anymore. That's because after you wind it up you are just supposed to put through the final metal hole that feeds out and click it in. I actually wasted 2 spools on your method, the tension of threading it through the second plastic conch at the end made those areas ragged. It gave me the same problem where it wouldn't auto-feed. I had to watch other videos to realize you aren't supposed to have it feeding out of the backup plastic cinch.
      If anybody sees my comment, please refer to other references because he messes up a step. With all respect and fairness, I had to point it out.

    Just spent a couple of hours trying to figure out feed issues with my B&D weed whacker. So frustrating. So "line feed" success of the weed whacker is impacted by the flexibility of the line. Who knew?! So if the manufacturers change the specs of the line itself, the performance of the weed whacker is impacted. I never would have guessed that I would have to let the line sit wound on the spool for a day before operating the machine. I wonder if that has always been the case. It would have been a long time before I figured it out. I've used weed whackers for years and never had much trouble until recently. I don't shop Amazon, so I hope I can find the line you are recommending elsewhere. Thanks for the tips. Very helpful. I don't know how we ever got along without RUclips.

    I guess this is cheaper? My b&d quit auto feeding so I bought a ryobi that’s similar. I wonder if I could do the same thing with their spool that comes with it? What ya think?

    • @becausestuffbreaks
      @becausestuffbreaks  5 лет назад

      I bet you can. Just match the size of the string. After you string the spool, let it sit for a day so it holds in place and doesn't unwind too much when it auto feeds. Let me know how it goes.

  • @nonebusiness6583

    Thanks for the tips. I was hoping you had a faster way to string it. It's quite tedious. If you don't get the rows level, I think this is why it stops continually and I have to remove the cap and reset the string. Yes. You can buy pre strung spools and move on smoothly but they are expensive compared to re stringing your own. Plus if you have a large job, they don't last long.

    I needed the hole adjustment tip (despite what John Fuller says. LOL). The hardware nearest me only stocks thicker lines for gas trimmers. And the other one a little further away had for electric trimmers but they buy giant reels and pre-cut them in shorter lengths for sale. And the sales lady had no info on what thickness it actually was. So I had a hell of a time trying to thread the thing. A comparison between what the trimmer came with and what I got now doesn't seem too great - since I had a hell of a time trying to get out the previous bit too - haha.

    • @toastrecon
      @toastrecon 6 лет назад +1

      Mine fed okay with the original spool, but when I went to re-wind it with replacement string (same diameter as original), it feeds like crazy, and throws little bits of string everywhere. The only thing I can do is stop when it does that (usually after 20 seconds) and turn the spool back a bit. Pretty useless. I may try winding the string in the "wrong" direction, or move up to another size. I also didn't wind it as tightly as Justin did, but I figured that it wouldn't make that big of a difference once the spool wasn't full, anyway?

    Okay I just tried the .080 Grass Gator and is working pretty well vs. the .065 string Black and Decker calls for of the same brand doesn't work, just feeds though fast. The Grass Gator is 3d and might weight less than the solid equivalent , or equal to .065 at .080. How ever that system works it must work off the weight of the line

    • @jackcollins77
      @jackcollins77 5 лет назад

      Right, the string has to be reloaded so that it unspools easily, not, as shown here, with the end of the string forced into the slot in the spool. The wound string SHOULDN'T be kept from unspooling. Weird.

  • @johnfuller2874
    @johnfuller2874 6 лет назад +21

    The string you are using is too big if enlarging the hole in the first step is necessary. Also, you didn't remove the end of the string from the slot to temporarily hold it from unraveling before inserting the disc into trimmer base. That, along with using a string too big keeps it from auto feeding.
