That's great. Glad you found them here. I am also glad that once I started listening to these shows I never stopped. Great for the imagination. Our grandparents had it good!
Love these programs. I only started finding these radio shows a few years back and so happy I did! My grandpa had great memories of growing up around the radio.
Shows allow you to use your imagination and that is what makes me keep listening to this day. Our grandparents had it good with these shows. Could only imagine coming home and putting on the radio instead of the TV.
Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce , I dare say, it's as if, A.Conan Doyle penned his great detective story characters, Holmes and Watson , specifically around these two actors. As a kid, I read the novels long before ever watching any of the cinematic portrayals and while seldom does the film industry ever begin to match the generosity of my imagination , Rathbone and Bruce are the exact mental image my imagination conjured up for the great detective and his sidekick roommate and biographer . Not only are the physical features dead on, but the voices are also a spectacular match . Over the years I've probably seen all the various portrayals of the Holmes character , but none , by far, were as ludicrous and miscast as the Morton Downey Jr. portrayal ! This is as bad , if not worse, then Hollywood casting Tom Cruise for the , Jack Reacher, character from the Lee Childs series of novels.
@@Ihatewater9000 I prefer Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke. The latter knew Nigel Bruce when Edward wasboy and Nigel Bruce a friend of Sir Cecil Hardwicke's, Edward's father. During WW2 the Hardwicke family was living in California, whilst the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce stories were being filmed. Merry Christmas one and all.
I couldn't agree more!! So nice to come across a kindred spirit. My father introduced me to everything Sherlock Holmes. He grew up listening to the radio in the 30's and 40's and had also read all the books. We used to watch all the black and white movies with Rathbone & Bruce. I even got him his own deerstalker hat for Christmas one year. 💛 😊
That may have been something you heard southern Irish or catholics saying as they call their male clerge father and their nuns, sister or mother. Or their big mama their call mother superior. But they went through a bit of a dubious phase of molestation charges so it be came that people went off those fiddlers trying to call themselves mother and father. So likely any trend may have just faded.
Basil Rathbone's voice ... now that's what you call class.
I need a classy voice like that!
@@OTRHALLOWEENHOLIDAZE Indubitably!
@@Offshoreorganbuilder That word was used in Christmas In Connecticut if I am correct. The magazine paper owner used it in that movie.
@@OTRHALLOWEENHOLIDAZE Quite so!
He was the best person to play Holmes
Loved this including the ads very nostalgic - Nigel Bruce is great as Dr Watson - a real character- Merry Christmas!
With great programs such as this, we all win.
Just for that, another one coming tomorrow! Thanks for listening!
love the radio shows and it brings back the stories of my grandparents Thank you so much

@@OTRHALLOWEENHOLIDAZE I love these shows when traveling by car. They keep me awake since I am usually the driver, and kill time between pitstops.
This one is always sweet. Thanks!
Don't you just love the subtle sound of that electric organ?
(Like nails on a slate.)

I have worse casting and that is Will Ferrell. Even worse than Peter Cook doing Holmes.
Basil & Bruce are my very favorite Sherlock & Dr Watson ever! 🧐👨🏻⚕️🤗🕵🏼

That's the organ music I want when I'm cremated... That should give the ceremony the touch of jovial absurdity such occasions demand...
"Love that Petri Wine"...
Bet it was a blended mess that you could use to strip wallpaper with...
love Basil Rathbone .

"Won't be worth a tinker's damn!"
'Safe space' needed here, I think.
I thought the British called Santa, Father Christmas.
Ha! So true!
i'm sure they changed it to Sanity Clause (oops, Chico got his two cents in :), cause this was for the American audience
