Just found out you are right down the street from me! Chapman College! I would like to hear what you think of this idea: America HAS TO HAVE a 2-year vetting system that makes it mandatory for ANY person who wishes to enter public office at ANY level. This would consist of a curriculum of study including American History, world history, civics and constitutional law. How to represent ALL Americans and not just your party. Secular law with an emphasis on separation of church and state. Scientific method and WHY it works. What a FACT is. Advanced economics (if you're voting on money matters you should understand what you're voting for!) If they can pass this course, then they will receive FREE media coverage and campaign support. ALL donations eliminated as well as Lobbyists GONE! This way you know they want to help Americans and not just the people who want to buy them. Give Americans their political FREEDOM from self interest groups! STOP the "Pay to Play Politics" Money should never be the deciding factor in a political race - America deserves intelligent leadership.
Any testing involving history justice, civics etc. Is either going to be trivial or biased. Your idea of economics may seem to be absolutely logical and based on the best available data while someone else may se it as propaganda. While it is shocking that for many local judges there is no education requirement and just a short course in things like me not taking bribes in order o be elected judge. On the other hand making the local animal control officer understand the inner workings of the stock market and the writings of John Locke may be overkill. In an ideal world people should be completely knowledgeable and competent to do a job being firm but fair and always avoiding corruption. If such people exist they are not likely to gravitate to public service. You may find a local mayor or two that comes close. I doubt such a person has the kind of training you suggest. Just my opinion.
Excellent. Since The Scientific American changed its name to Unscientific - and Dr. Shermer was canceled - Skeptic magazine remains one of the few places to go to for the real deal cerebral content.
Racism always gets poorly understood; it's caused by logical fallacies, not hatred. Hate is often a consequence of a racist belief, not the cause of it. Fallacies such as hasty generalization which is used in collectivizing guilt leading victims of crime to blame innocent people for the actions of others just because they look similar to them. Often it's about using the most accurate description they're able to in absence of being able to individually identify the culprit.
Check the statistics in The Bell Curve book,. You will not believe so many of them are so wrong. Never seen anything that sloppy, yet some (including the authors) still think there is a merit in it.
Will humans every stop being tribalistic? No. Tribalism is hardwired through eons of evolution. The best we can do is mitigate our baser instincts, but that's nearly impossible when our ruling class uses them against us.
Dear Michael, Thank you for all your excellent interviews. Thoroughly enjoyable. On the issue of race and cognitive ability, though, your sceptical antennae seemed to lose some of their usual acuity. Those who deny that there are genetic differences between groups like to suggest that it’s all environment, that human evolutionary history is too short to allow for such differences; and, anyway, differences within groups are much greater than between groups. They use inappropriate analogies, such as plants growing in fertile as compared to infertile soil or, in the case of Richard Nesbitt, to basketball. You would be the first, I would imagine, to point out the logical fallacies and deficiencies in scientific methods and reasoning. Since she started working on genome-wide association studies to help disentangle genetic and environment effects, Paige Harden seems to have tried to distance herself from the Vox article she wrote with Nesbitt and her supervisor, Eric Turkheimer, criticising Charles Murray. (I might add that Nesbitt’s woeful comment - that he ‘despised’ Murray - is unworthy of the mutual respect expected in academia.) In my search for a better understanding, I came across a 2020 article by Nathan Cofnas of Cambridge University in the journal Philosophical Psychology, titled ‘Research on group differences in intelligence: A defence of free inquiry’. If you have not already read it, I think he makes an excellent case in support of both science and liberalism in the pursuit of truth, however painful. One of the references on Nathan’s CV is none other than the leading public intellectual (in my view) and your good friend, Steven Pinker. Best wishes, Dale Doré
Historical trends tell us it's inevitable that EVENTUALLY all humans will be racially, linguistically, and culturally homogenous. All human history, as human population has grown, intelligence has climbed, and tech (esp transport and communication tech) has improved, we've trend from many small, genetically/physically isolated groups, to a few large groups, in constant genetic/linguistic/cultural/racial exchange with the OTHER large groups. Unless we nuke ourselves back into the stone-age, there will EVENTUALLY (several centuries, maybe millennia hence) be virtually total racial (and linguistic, and cutural) homogeneity. We aren't TOO far from linguistic homogeneity, today; A few centuries ago, there were tens of thousands of languages used daily. Today, with maybe a dozen languages, you can communicate enough to get by, virtually anywhere on earth. And the trend continues for small languages to die out, and get assimilated into bigger linguistic groups. Same is true of race, but genes travel and mix, slower than words do.
18:40 genetic plays a main role in the formation of personal identity but it’s subject to change and adaptation (personal identity is subject to change in case of self-understanding and the mechanism of brain functioning).

Therefore, if you compare people of different cultural groups, genetic factor of IQ becomes meaningless. So, there is no nature v nurture debate. Look, just like a Brazilian soccer player, these guys were playing and pushing each other to a level I had never seen, and you get loads of high-level players coming out of there. Think of the concept of "human capital," but with a minus sign in front of it, and you'll understand why one racial group in the world is a real problem for the rest of us who want nice things.
I’m so glad Michael has tackled the question of racial prejudice. I wonder if other animal species put such a high emphasis on outward appearances and colour - perhaps for mating purposes, I think Michael alluded to. I would think that religion also has a heck of a lot to do with how we regard and perceive fellow human beings. For one, many Christians believe that humans were created by their god - in the image of their god, no less, which for Westerners is white, blonde and blue-eyed - perceived as the “perfect” human being (according to the Arians) Christians are also greatly affronted when scientists say that we are apes! If we’re created in their god’s image then we have special status above the rest of the animal kingdom. Some go as far as explaining that according to the bible, dark skin came about because of Ham’s “sin”of seeing his father (Noah)naked and being banished to the heat of Africa! This therefore justifies prejudice, tribalism or racism, as god himself decreed that the different “races” or tribes were not to intermarry.
