- KTM 500 EXC - When I asked KTM if I could borrow an enduro bike the conversation went along the lines of "Well what do you want, 250, 350, 450 or..... The 500?" Well what would you have said?
The Enduro Noob returns for the Winter and this time he's on some serious hardware!! :-)

This has been my dream bike for several years and I finally got to ride it last month. It was literally unbelievable. I couldn't believe that a bike like it could even exist. Compared to my WR426 sumo it was a rocket.
lol , it hammers alright , i had 3 of them . rip it and grip it ,!
I got one for myself for Christmas, God I love it. The power is great, they ride is great, and of road it's incredibly.
Its great isnt it, my favorite Enduro currently!
I know quite a few Yanks who change oil every 1200 to 1500 miles and have more than 12,000 miles without a piston change. Valves hardly ever actually need adjustment so a much m,ore practical bike than you might think.Buying one myself very soon to replace a 690 ER. Same power but at least 80 pounds lighter, what is not to love about that?
just bought one of these today, love it!
How much
Being from Australia I always find it funny how British people just can’t off-road, basically because there isn’t any...
We can’t because the grass is pretty much always wet and there are walls absolutely everywhere
Corbin Danylycha we can but the only people who post on RUclips can’t ride
Richard Dye he must be the only one 😂
There’s loads of places to “off-road” in the uk but like the guy said above, there’s literally walls/fences everywhere lol
I wish I still had my bike so I could post decent videos off-roading where I am😩
Why are there so many walls or fences? Lol. What about just open untouched forest with trails going thru it? Or not really close by to most?
My 2019 KTM 500 EXC F sounds a lot more aggressive, loud and snappy then this when you give it more throttle. But on that all restrictions in the air intake and exhaust have been removed and that made a huge difference (ECU was already programmed for that). The 500 is a beast and it feels a lot more powerful then my old Yamaha WR450 while power comes on more controllable and it feels more light and have better breaks. It is scary powerful and I love it :)
Rondo Cat I rode my neighbors and that thing power wheelied so hard. He popped a wheelie and ripped past me on a gravel road while I was almost maxed out at 75 on my crf250l. That bike is insane and super loud
How is it on the pavement?
You covered the important information - the service interval is way too short for this bike to be used for me as a dual sport. That's an oil change and valve adjustment every other day. No thanks. Good review.
dahveed284 See my comments above.
Same thing happened to me twice on my 2017 KTM the exceed 500, when the gas light comes on it’s basically empty😳 Great video, have fun on your new bike.
I have 67 hours on mine and I've done 1 service never checked the valves. I'm doing it different on this one as my other bikes I've done the services on time and under. I want to see if it gets to 200 hours with very basic 3 services and strip the engine to see how that's impacted on the engine compared to the my well serviced bikes.
Lay the bike to left on the ground letting the fuel move down to the bottom left hand side of tank and stand it up and ride off. Fuel tank is designed lower on the left then right to give you that little bit more fuel for moments like this.

Bought the 2019 KTM 500 after test driving the 2 stroke 2017 KTM 300. The 300 was very nice with no vibrations but it had very little power compared to my old Yamaha WR450 and I could not make the 300 do any power wheelies... It has become apparent I am a torque power junky so I did go for the 500 even if it is pretty much way to much power for me :)
same here, I bought the 6 days 500 EXC in the end for the same reasons :-)
I was sold until you mentioned the service every 15 hours. Wish someone would make something as light as this designed to daily.
but a service is a bottle of oil and 20 mins of your time - it is nothing and in fairness the intervals rated are for hardcore riding - you can easily double them with ZERO worry, my sxf 450 as an example gets a service every 10 rides and that might be 35-45 hours, it is 100% and i have had it since 2013... 🙂
62HP !! ... :) The Yamaha WR450 I used to have had 42hp and bottom end torque that was scary at times when going offroad and it did power wheelies in 1, 2 and 3rd gear with supermotard road tires on. Think when I get a new dirtbike I will get the KTM 500, it has same weight as the 50CCM moped I had when I was 16 lol.
pretty sure he was fumbling with the numbers when he said that.
AFAIK the 500 excs usually have about 45-48 hp or so, which seem to be closer to just above 50 hp when you fix the mapping and airflow on it from what ive read.
the only lightweight SM bike i know of that pulls 60+ hp numbers is the Aprilia SXV 550 (which ppl claim actually pulls 70(!) hp, in addition to weighing less than the exc?)
You should try the husky 450 or ktm 450 6 days. They have the same power but weigh even less! You also get the map switch, which can turn the traction control on/off.
Side note - I ran my 450 out of fuel just after attending a bike meet and leaving spiritedly. The fuel light means you basically have no fuel left lol!
tom pearce my tuned 17 excf 450 six days is a beast. Crazy power. And yeah the light comes on when your basically out of fuel.
5:58 "what have I done!! Why am I doing it!? Why do I keep doing it?!? What have I done AGAIN!?! WHAT DO I STILL CONTINUE TO DO!!!!!! LOL
the bike is awesome but when you said maintenance every 15 hours that brought me down.
It's a racing machine what do you expect my ktm 125 has a new piston every 30 hours
My dads got one of these they wheelie off the power so easily If you open it up 😂 savage machines
Gotta aim the bike, high center of gravity and stay in the powerband. Let the back tire follow the front. Trust your equipment. Offroad in a snap
he was a nice guy offering petrol straight away
+frozen he was, I did know him it wasn't offered until he recognised me hehe. Still he wouldn't take any money for it so top fella 👍👍
The way that he is riding this bike there is no need for such short intervals for maintenance. Change the oil before it starts to look black and ride the shit out a it my wr250f has 50 hour intervals for valve checks it now has 13000 kms on it and only one valve adjustment since brand new as long as it starts and idles fine then valves are prly still good
This could be a new series, just borrow a different bike every month and ride around until you're out of petrol, great fun had by all!
What camera are you using?! The picture quality is exceptional!
Service on the 2019 is 150 hours for valve inspection not 15 when not racing (if I remember correctly, but it is for sure not that often)... Service intervals on the KTM 500 at leas on the 2019 is not that close according to what it say in manual, mostly only oil changes that is done often :) If you are not riding hard at high revs valves usually do not need adjusting for a long time.
In my service book (2017 model) valve check every 30 hours and oil change every 15 hours. Ive done one valve inspection and nothing had moved, its very quick to do anyway so no biggy
Having ridden motorcross most of my life I decided three months ago to do my bike test, once I passed I decided to buy a ktm smc 690 supermoto and love every minute of it however it's useless off road, I don't think there is a happy medium when it comes to on/off road
U just have to decide what ur going to be riding more, just glad I kept the motorcross bike 👍
Your are correct, people used to say take the 701 offroad get some different wheels. I would say nah its too heavy, after taking this 500 greenlaning sunday I,m loving how capable it is offroad, very impressive bike
I agree. I had a 690 Enduro and 500 EXC. The Enduro is pretty damned capable, but it's no 500. If the 500 falls upside down in a ditch, just pick it up and keep going. The 690's extra ~70lb and lack of a handhold is a problem.
Pistol wip Danger get a 19" front wheel and some 50 50 tires then you have a mediocre offroader and an ok road bike.
I just got a husqvarna 501 :O Can't wait to run out of petrol in the middle of nowhere me too
happen to me on my first ride ,had to push 5 miles ,then i got a 19 liter tank harhar 375klm range now 016 ktm 500
It weighs 100 kg? Fuck me that front wheel must come up nicely
You should ride the 2018 300 next! Nice video 👍🏼
Already planned :-)
Debating on getting the 500 exc-f or 350 exc-f but I’m concerned I’m going to be making a bad choice. I want to go on the road regularly so the 500 might be better but on the dirt I feel like it would be too much, the 350 would be better on dirt for me, but I don’t know if it’s going to be enough to ride on the street.
The 500 is a pussy cat lower down the rev range if need be. Very smooth power delivery. I now have a 500 as a supermoto build. If you check out the off-road test of the bike you will see it's very easy to ride off-road 👍
Jack Z what did you end up getting? I have a 500 and it is a tame beast, the power is there when you want to use it. The thing I love about my 500 is you just point it up a hill, pick a gear, and just go!
Hey guys, can anyone comment on how well the 500exc bike does on the pavement? Ill most likely be riding 65/35 road/dirt. Is the 500exc a good option? Thanks
Miss the 701 already 😭 ??? Wish to put 17" rims, big brakes & slicks ? 😈... Go for it !!! You'll have then 3 real monsters in your garage... Nice vid as always LCR, thx !!! 👌✌️✌️✌️
+nemesis haha yeah I could be seriously tempted with that have to be honest 😎😎
As an added bonus you can scare people because the tyres sound like an air raid siren lol. Also that skid tho
Power is nothing without.......... fuel! Lol 👍
+longkeith diablo haha too true!
great video im after the KTM 250 as my next bike as never been off road and and looks like fun and with weather that we have it would get used more than my other bikes
Absolutely agreed!
Lamb Chop Rides just brought the Ducati V4s so maybe end of year look at one if the wife will let me fingers crossed 🤞🏻
Very nice! Looking forward to trying the V4 😍😍
Nice! How are the vibes on this bike?
Hardly any vibes CC, I would buy this over the 701 next time 👍
Thanks LCR! I put in a BYOB order for a 2018 beta 300rr 2 stroke with plans on using it as a supermoto and dirt bike. Some people say the vibes are bad on the 300rr on street but I figure Flexx bars can help with that. However, I'm also throwing around the idea of getting a 18' 500 EXC but the 15 hr valve adjustments turn me off but most people say it's fairly easy and the valves are usually always in spec. What I like about the 300rr 2 stroke is it's simple maintenance, oil injection (no mixing oil and fuel), just an easy top end every 150 hrs, that 2 stroke hit of power, unique sound and super lightweight bike. What do you think? The 2 stroke will not be used for the highway but local roads and backroads. Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it.
I borrowed the ktm 250 tpi, I have a review on the channel. It's an incredible bike and so light. Even though curb weight isn't that different between the 500 exc and 250 tpi the two stroke feels so much lighter as engine rotating mass is so much less so changes direction quicker. But your right so many people told me forget the 15 hour vavle check on the 500 it's allways in spec just change the oil and check valves every 6 months. I think the job is pretty quick too.. it's seriously tough call between the tpi and 500 fours, two strokes do sound lovely though and probably thier days are numbered as they will never be able to meet emissions law in a few years so buy one while you can I recon 😎😎
CycleCruza I was looking at this as well bro but damn!! The 15hr maintenance killed it. I wish we could get this power in the WR with the WR250R schedule. Is it really that hard for the manufacturers to come through on that? Need that fuel injection too where I'll be traveling. Cali coast to the Sequioas in one day without re-jetting..
@@sheepdog819 Id rather have it in like a 2015 Honda CRF250X Aluminum Frame..
My kind of bike , I also like the 2018 free ride 250 four stroke more of a useable bike on road
There's a reason why they fitted it with a clear plastic fuel tank
+Paul Harrison yeah... light came on and thought I had 20 or so miles to play with.. only did 5 haha
You always seem to come up smelling of roses! Good on ya! And remember me when you win the lotto lol. What a beast that ktm is! Shame its not 2 stroke ;)
+2Stroke Squashie it was a stroke of luck! Was just settling in to the idea of having to push it 5 miles.... wasn't keen haha. If I win the lotto will get you one 😉😉
Only Chops can run out of petrol on a bike with a see through petrol tank ha
+Lee Howling haha well when you put it like that 😂😂
i was wondering when the light came on how long it would last lol
+Stuart Dickson yeah not long! About 5 miles!!
Brill vid. Offroad. Like walking on my carpet in my slippers .hahaha.
Chops you do get yourself into some mad situations, which is great for our viewing pleasure. It could be worse you could be riding a GSXR down a green lane and dropping it in the deep muddy puddles. Who would do such a thing!
+Dougie haha yeah at least it's the right bike for it! 😂😂
What a cracking bike, looks like loads of fun! I'd love a off roader but think I'll end up hurting myself a lot & seeing you ride around that field confirmed my thoughts lol You were so lucky to bump into the land owner & getting fuel like that, bloody funny though! Keep it up mate, great work! :)
+Sixth Gear Motorcycles haha thanks mate, yeah I do really really like them and so much fun. Out tomorrow with the old enduro crew for some proper green lane action on it. Have to say I'm a little worried 😓😓
I've never tried one, I dunno what I'm missing to be honest... lol oh dear, i foresee trouble ahead, look forward to the vid! hehe
+Sixth Gear Motorcycles thanks mate! Non stop rain today too so going to be super slippy! 😣😣 the thing I like the most is the extreme low weight, it's like a heavy pushbike haha
Opsy, haha I think I might get on with it, I used to do a lot of mountain bike riding but I was a lot younger and fitter back then, I'd probably run out of puff now. For now I'll sit back & watch you :)
+Sixth Gear Motorcycles haha very sensible 😂😂😂
I wanna be your neighbor!!! We would shred dirt/ pavement everywhere, everyday!!!!!
Another entertaining vid Chops. Pheasants are a bloody nuisance, particularly when you realise they were only brought here because they're stupid and therefore very easy to shoot.
I defintley getting might take a while to save up for one this bike is defintley mine
How much for this bike
Could of sworn heard you say you needed fuel right at the beginning
+Jay B yeah I did Jay but thought the light would give me 20 miles or so... only did about 5 😣😣
Hilarious, good entertainment.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 Awesome as always chops 😉😉👏👏👏👏
Wow chops, I want one. Now. That is awesome. Work better with petrol though, lol.🏍😂😂
+Mike Stewart yeah it's rather special indeed.. I'm seriously wanting one too now 😍😍
what a gent!
did it have a tire left on it after the test run lol , harhar funny , gotta love the kato 500
I would actually choose the 350 or 250 2T
It sounds like she is not allowed to give her full power is that true?
Hambledon and denmead, what an area!
I know those roads! 👍
Tell me what bush you chuck your bikes in 😂😂
Quite a few of my friends sold their sports bikes a few years ago, as they were too dangerous on the road. They brought dirt bikes instead........didn't work out so well!
+Paul Ford haha lots of injuries? Been out today on some proper green lanes and just about survived 😎😎
A few injuries. Enough that one of them got a warning from his boss about all the time he was having off work lol
+Paul Ford haha yeah I can imagine! That's the trouble with them you need to be able to bounce!
That’s hilarious, haven’t laughed that much for a while…..onya Chopsy
I would’ve said...Husqvarna 701SM please
Phew, I thought it's going to be a long vid if we had to watch you push for 5 miles. Great vid.
Is the 690 a wheelie monster?
+Richard Walmsley thanks Matey, my 701 was a wheelie monster with power commander. They are standard but need some clutch to get the best wheelies out of them
I think the fuel indicator light was a tell tale sign that was on for a while. That said.... You was buzzing lol
+Nick sowter it wasn't on very long at all, about 5 miles 😂😂 learned my lesson, it's less of a fuel light more a panic light!
Please chops can you review an z1000 as you've done all the naked bikes apart from the Japanese ones
+Dave Moran yes hoping kawaski will respond to me eventually so I can borrow one.. 👍
Haha that was the best review ever top marks Chops! Need to get you a plate for that bike that reads PEN15 in case it happens again hahaha. Top stuff mate keep em coming!
+Revs'N'Reps haha thanks very much dude 👍👍
+Lamb Chop Rides hehe no worries buddy. Oh and I can relate to the "oh f**k what have I done feeling on a bike" back in 2010 when I only had my full license a year and jumped on an S1000RR for the first time haha..
fuck that 15h valve check just do it like every 50h, oil change is every 15h but its really not hard at all takes like 15min. the maintenance is totally worth it! so much fun
+suomiman100 yeah I thought for normal road and enduro 15 hours for valves is over cautious.. perhaps if your competing!
Lamb Chop Rides long as u keep changing the oil and keep the air filter clean valves will stay in spec for ever
my 2017 has valve checks:
- Once after 1 operating hour
- Every 30 operating hours/after every race
I doubt the 2018 changed that
Eric i was talking about road use
Well its ktm it will probably blow up after 60 hours
Hi chops
Slightly off topic, can I ask, what is your tactical vest & where did you get it 😃
Loving the review as always 😂😂
+TheGray1967 yes sure, it's an Ogio flight vest. Really for mountain biking as comes with removable hydration bladder but drone fits in that pouch perfect 😎😎
How LUCKY was that fuel
If power is what you want get a 500 two stroke
+Happy grower Chris I have a CR500 VS 500 EXC vid coming 😎
Lamb Chop Rides make sure the gearing is the same on both bikes 😊
Took the motorbike training course one weekend, all little 125 and 200cc road bikes. my buddy gives me his Honda 450 for a spin.. I was driving much like this, if I had not taken that course I would have eaten some serious shit haha
You gotta start somewhere..
Was that Alan Partridge i heard @ 5:47
5:56 - it took me couple seconds to understand, that he is going down the hill. :D
Curious what you think compared to your 701, obviously the 500 is the better off-road bike, but if you had Sumo tires how would you describe the two? I almost bought a 17 501/500 before deciding the 701 was a better fit for my personal riding style(long rides, dual sporting, commuting.)
+MotardSteve yeah it's tough... by the time you get a smaller rear sprocket I don't think speed wise will be much in it... 500 is lighter of course but it's not as powerful as the 701, I think as a road sumo 701 makes more sense 👍
Lamb Chop Rides Yeah that's why I went with it. Thanks for the reply. Pretty much said the same thing I did when deciding to buy mine.
Hey. Quit driving on the wrong side of the road.
Edit: It's a joke. I realize this is not the United States....
INSANEREINDEER its england
I'd have sold you a gallon for £100
I think I'd be safer on a SuperDuke. I'd just want to take my it off and see how far I could push it.. 😂 Straight to A&E
Bro that’s a decent field, abit bumpy just rag the shit out of it man. Don’t be scared if you fall you fall lol
Nice vids, only just found this channel 😀 shame Dave's not the Game keeper any more, he's a great chap
If you run of petrol there again my uncle lives in the white house just by that barn you filled up by 😀😀
wheres a baron with a gixer when u need him
In a puddle
I’ve just bought a 500 and this made me laugh…
Watch this space and I bet I make the same mistakes
that's Jammie
What's the difference with the exc-f compared to the exc
One is two stroke the other is 4 stroke
@@Greggss9 one is fuel injected one is carbed*
both 4 stroke ones fuel injected ones carbed
@@tinylittlebill1 ExCF is 4-stroke, the Exc is 2
Same with the SX and SX-F. Not sure where people are getting the carbed/FI thing; it’s 2 and 4 stroke.
Asif u didnt even fuel up before u went out hahaha what a spoon u got a big tank u can see inbetween your legs weather there is much in or not 👊🏽 i have the 500 exc f six days not bad be unreal for green laneing and long moors driving on and of roads not good on tight play areas is good but deffoes not made for like private lands were u pay and play in and out of treese and small hill climbs here and there but great on long stretches and adventures!
Sounds like clutch slipping
Haha I bought a Husqvarna and ran out of squirt the first day I got it as well. Top tip mine only done 40 miles per TANK 😳😳 😂😂
+Psycho Paul haha, must be something only the cool kids do 😎😎
Keep your electronics out of my off rd vehicles. Next year it’ll come with wifi and Bluetooth and nobody will rightfully reject KTM for it.
ktm claims 63hp at the crank but it's nowhere near that, dyno runs i've seen put it in the high 40s stock.
Low 50s can be achieved with the 450 sxf exhaust, a minor airbox mod and a fuel injection tune (JD jetting efi tuner).
10babiscar not really a stock husqvarna fe 450 has 53ponies stock with slight modification on the 500 ypu can get around 57-59ponies
jurcek 000 in austria its illegal to lie about technical datas. Socthe 63hp is true
Why do ALL dual-sport bikes have such low-boggy sounding exhausts?
High maintainance bikes usually mean cashgrab $$$$$ think low Honda civic verses high performance Ferrari.
Wow chopsy I know this is an old video but damn that sweet bike has attracted all the foreigners and bombarded your channel with some shitty comments. Ignore the trolls they're not your real fans. So what you aint going balls out on a borrowed 500 4stroke ! Main thing is you're having fun and that's what it's all about.
I’ve heard the 450 feels faster. It revs better apparently
+brokenlegz ok interesting... maybe borrow one of them next time 👍
Pack Of Lies that’s what I meant lol 😋
LCR go ride it!! Let us know. I seen some magazine took the stickers off and got some riders to ride both and then guess what bike was what, they got it wrong. I’ve never ridden a 500
Where do you wear your gopro/camera and what mount do you use?
Don't buy a bike like this if you can't ride in a field without shitting it. Your road skills on that bike scare me dude.
After how many moto/h or km need change oil and check valves ??
This or the 701 supermoto?
That's the exact dilemma I'm in now.. my blade is for sale and when it goes I think I'm going for the 500 over the 701.. All depends if you want to go offroad as the 500 is way better
Lamb Chop Rides 701 Enduro is a bit quicker.
Don't be fooled by the 106kg figure. It's 109kg without fuel for the 2019 as per the KTM website.
thats still 239lbs what else to be a good off-road oriented dual-sport.... (thats legal from the factory) can't plate a wr450 here in Québec.. Crf450L is like 289pound for 38,2hp
what camera you using here chops? Your last couple of vids have been way clearer
Its the GoPro Hero 4 Silver, but secret is redering the video in 2.7k, youtube then doesnt compress the vid as much and you end up with better quality even on the 1080p version.
Cheers chops! Keep up the good content.
How are you liking the bike? Do you think there Enough power?
Good 👍👍👍👍
Hows the power difference between that and your old 701? I hears the 5 actually had more power to weight ratio. Thinking about build a sumo over buy a sumo
+dr. Doeslittle yeah that's an interesting one as if you consider the 500 is geared much lower than the 701.. my old 701 with the power commander felt almost as quick as was geared for 115 mph! The 500 would probably do 90... but it's how light and nimble the 500 feels compared to the 701 which feels like a super sport bike in comparison. But yes out and out performance and power feel maybe not a huge amount in it..
I've never ridden a 500 but I have a '17 smc-r with the stage 1 kit on it, holy shit it's fast and loud. It's probably the best handling bike I've ever ridden, sticks in the corners like shit on a blanket
Chaz Boner thats the ktm. Ive been looking at the 701. Whats the difference do you know? I have heard the 701 has fine differences like the tank size. Im not even sure if the smc (r) is still in production in the us...
+dr. Doeslittle it's the exact same engine on the 2016 701 and 690. There are suttle differences, the 2017 701 has the new duke 690 engine and that does make more power..
Lamb Chop Rides ok confirms i still need that damn 701. Im not familiar with the stage kit hes refuring to. Didnt know they made stage kits. Anythings gotta be lighter and more powerful then my adventure pig (klr).
😆OH goodness Chops. Been there re:running out of fuel 🐵. Though I had too phone my missus. To bring some out. Not impressed 😂🙍
+mac46rr yeah missus would have not been impressed... would rather push than face an ear bashing haha
Mate have go
