This really got me thinking about doing another video on the topic. There are things I miss about the dealer and so much more I learned... What do you think?
HumbleMechanic After leaving the dealership how do you stay up to date with the latest technology without having any hands on experience and factory training on new VW models? Btw awesome channel!
HumbleMechanic Here bud, Are mrk4 r32s chain driven? Going to start viewing a couple n one says it had it's chain n crackseal done in the description, They are going for 6/7k over here in Ireland I think that a good price like 😀 .. Was gonna Google it but rather jus ask someone that knows his stuff lol
I will always love how real you are. We need this a lot nowadays, in my opinion. Thank you for continuing your videos, it's the rare treat I get now and then, and I'm glad you can make it all work with your family and situation. Keep it up!
You're killing it dude! I'm so happy for you, your family, and all of your success this last year. I love your guts! I can't see a Volkswagen key chain or phone case on someone without telling them about you and your channel / journey and the things they can learn from you. You're a powerhouse. It was awesome being on your team for the Pull-A-Part challenge and hanging out at Road to SEMA. Both were HUGE highlights of my year! Thank you!
New VW owner... just bought a ‘03 GTI VR6 6 Spd and thanks to your channel got a lot information and on another note the dealership life sucks, don’t get me wrong I love working on cars but not at a dealership. We’ll keep up the good work and wish you all the best...
Awesome videos. Thank you for them. I have been only watching for a short time, but your's is one of my favorite channels. Thanks to you I went out and I am now doing what I love to do and what I have always been good at. Thanks again. For all others, trust me listen to this guy and get out there and do what you love. It is so rewarding and I couldn't be happier.
My point is learn as many trades as you can. Go to night school. Besides machine building learning how to weld opened up a whole new world for me. Remember when you learn more when you change jobs your education leaves with you.
One of the only regrets I have from leaving my dealership (MF Farm Equipment ) is that every year I fall further behind in schooling. Never regret'd it though.
So me and Deboss watch the same shit...hell yeah brother, not only do I have a Cummins but I just sold my VR6 before it got me into trouble... that fucker would spank Mustangs all day😂
I took one of first ASE (NIASE) tests in 1972 worked at Bob Hoy VW ElPaso Then Southwest VW Houston Tx in 1980. Just cleaned out my attic of old training manuals on AFC & CIS fuel injection. Tossed out a whole lot of manuals. In those days memorizing wiring schematics was easy. Opened up European repair shop in 1988 and ready to get out of the crazy repair business in the 21st century. Not fun anymore! All you used to need was a lot good hand tools, a test light, timing light a not much more. Can't keep up anymore with all the rigs, jigs, cables Cartridges and special tools that seemed to change every 6 months. Of course dealership labor rate was only $19.50 Hr. In 70s early 80s. A 15k service paid 3 hours on a type 1 or type 2 VW. Valve adj, points/condenser, plugs and carb adjustment. OF every 3k. Gravy job!
Hey bro twisted wrenches for 56 yrs 10 yrs on Benz and then 8 on bmw then built drag motors and general repairs in my garage just like the guy below said they were easy gravy cars on the 60 70 80s but I got tired too retired when I turned 65 never regretted a mlnute
I'm still working 4 days a week 11 months a year, however my sow had her first litter so I'm super excited about that and continue to develop my homestead. They ate one of my apple trees so I had to come up with another plan for the fruit trees and I'm looking forward to getting my beef production started. I have finished the plans for the smokehouse and cold storage / processing building so I will be building them this year. And I picked up the butcher knives when I was on vacation last month.
Glad that you are happy with how things are going! Your videos have helped me a ton with my 'new' '04 Golf in doing things I would never have had the confidence to do myself on my Jetta 10 years ago. As long as you keep putting out awesome quality videos, I'll keep watching them!
It was the BEST thing that ever happened to me, leaving a dealership after 17 years. I moved onto another career and retired with 20 years there. Happy for you.
Charles, glad to see that the year since leaving the dealership has been everything and more that you wished for. Keep up the good work. You may never know how much the information you share with the DIYs crowd has helped make a difference.
Love the fact that you are still doing good with your choice. It's hard to make a commitment sometimes to leave a secure paycheck and strike out on your own. I've been an owner operator for 32 years and it takes dedication and a will to be self motivated. Love your videos. I've been watching you a long time. You may have not even had a beard back then. Just kidding. LOL Well from one North Carolina native to another, I wish you well. P.S. Do a video on how to get your subs up. I could use some help on that. I'm a newbie on putting videos up.
"Time" is one our most precious commodities. I'm glad that you can spend more of it at home with family. I hope to retire in a few years and join you in doing other things beside work. :)
I didn't realize that was a year ago! Wow. Car repair videos is indeed my jam; I hope I'll be leaving my "dealership" in the not super distant future, too. Glad you've made it happen! Hopefully adapting to RUclips doesn't become the job instead of making your great videos. Rock on.
Thanks for the videos Charles. Besides saving me some money and interested in fixing and modifying my car, they really helped me gain interest in becoming a technician. You can expect a new crew member soon, keep on being a boss!
I admire your courage and the passion you have to pursue what you wanted to do and to share your knowledge you've accumulated over the years. You won't probably ever see most of your viewers but the knowledge shared will help many careers. Thanks so much and keep up the good work!
Such a huge fan! Your story is so cool to listen to and as a 1 year experienced mechanic myself, I just wanted to say thank you. I've found a lot of your information very useful or you predict future situations I run into. Keep them coming my man ✋👊
I left working at dealerships in the mid seventies because of low pay. I went to work as a machinist making more money than my two jobs did. I went from a machinest at the same company to building machine tools. When the machine tool business folded I went to a engineering group as a lead tech, they paid for my welding education. I’m retired now.
I can’t do all the jobs at home that I could do at the shop, but it’s nice to be picky and choosey. It’s been just over two years for me since bringing box home and I just finished one of the larger builds I’ve ever had the opportunity to do... at home.
I also broke away from the dealers and the big after market repair shops in the early 90s. I am now semi retired. I seem to remember a few people who predicted I would fail in a week. That was nearly 30 years ago. Best wishes. I admire your having the desire to make it on your own. Keep it up and have fun doing it.
Congrats on the one year anniversary of being your own boss. Still a great channel too btw. I look forward to the next year of the humble mechanic. Great job!
It has been an amazing year for you. I also used to think that the dealers way was the only way until I started working for myself. Aftermarket has so many positives but so many negatives as well. Best of luck with the coming years I know you will be successful.
Very happy you got things going the way you want. Best wishes and all the luck to you. I always watch as much as I can. You've helped out a lot on my car just trying to figure it out. 05 mk4 gli. Long story short plenty gasoline Just no matches. Hopefully I can figure it out. Enjoy your new found freedom. Enjoy the day.
I don't believe I've seen Charles without a hat, actually. And the way he is so passionate about his new hat forces me to think that it is actually a part of his body. And the new hat is like a new skin grown - you know like evolved to the next level!
Hahahaha. It’s a pretty rad hat! I actually don’t even love wearing hats. I started wearing them for the show so I didn’t have to mess around combing my hair. 😂
Great video I’m hoping to leave my nine to five job very soon and start working side hustle full time for myself! It’s really uplifting to see someone that has done it and had some much success 👍🏻
Charles I truly enjoy listening watching you and your buddy Paul at dap... inspired by you and Paul to buy that 35th anniversary edition GLI looking forward someday to drive down to visit you guys from LBNY
Super happy for you, while I dont know you, and probably never will get to know you, I feel like we where old friends. You have a great screen personality, and you deserve the success!
That was very inspirational I wasn't expecting that! I can't decide if I should try and be free and do what I want from the beginning or go straight into working for someone else and work for myself in a more stable future, that's the crossroads I'm at this year so it's great to see your journey and learn from it. Good luck Charles 🚗💨✌🏻
Hey, it sounds like you’re really happy with your decision and that’s what always matters. As long as you’re happy doing what you love. A lot of people wake up doing things they have to do to make ends meet but that’s life, right? I’m sure your wife and kid(s) are very happy also. When a fork in the road comes your way, don’t look at it with a wary eye but embrace the change of direction. The routes you take can bring amazing experiences, adventures and also new friends. It’s always unnerving to look into the abyss of uncertainty but whatever decision you make, put your heart into it and it’ll always pay off.
Charles I hear on the tool box. I still have my first Mac tool box I bought in 82. Yep been in the business awhile. That doesn't count my military carrer where I was also an instructor for the wheeled and tracked vehicle repair school
I wish I would have known about you a few days earlier than this. I just worked to diagnose and replace a water pump in a 1999 Beetle. I've replaced one other water pump in a VW, but the engine was not in the car.
Hey, i know this is a long one but I have a Nissan Sylphy 2006, and it does have a problem with power. First off, i do experience a delayed driving force when i step on the gas especially when the engine is hot and not in motion. This happens more so when a high torque is needed for the vehicle to move either foward or backwards. For instance when i come to a complete stop and i have to go over a bump or ramp of some sort, stepping on the gas wont make it go over immediately as i will have to deeply accelerate for a few seconds..say 7 sec..for it to even start moving. Its movement will be extremely slow until it gains momentum and after which everything works as its supposed to. Whilst all these happens, the rev conter on the dash stays stationery and does not act as though there’s no acceleration at all up until the vehicle moves. My Mech had to change the throttle sensor, had its transmission control unit replaced and also checked the exhaust system for any leakages but no show. I have constantly stayed dirty on it, moving shop to shop but it seems to prove a headache for everybody. Any help/suggestions will be highly appreciated.
That year flew, really glad for you Charles, it was a brave move and so happy that its all working out for you, keep up the great work, you are a great help to all your followers:):)
Thanks for all the awesome content, looking forward to more! You've opened my heart to VW/Audi and German vehicles in general, and I'm a better technician for it. Thank you very much
HumbleMechanic LOL if you only knew the list of cars I had in my head, Corrado, MK7 GTI, MK4 R32 (same blue as yours, I'm jealous honestly) BMW E46 330ci, E39 540I M package, E36 M3, B7 S4...... I'm going into heavy equipment repair to fund my addiction to cars, and since I wont be working on cars daily anymore, I wont be too tired or burnt out to do it!

@3:05. SOUTH OF THE BORDER !!!! LOVE IT. And Charles if you are there again. Go into the 24 hour cafe and get the fried chicken. It will take 20 minutes (cooked to order). But it is worth it.
Delighted it is going well for you Charles you have put in a lot to get to that stage of career choice, I couldn't Imagine stopping my workshop to focus solely on RUclips/content creator. On the tools has become ingrained in me and as bad as it can be to have an independent workshop, there is a lot of job satisfaction and learning new things pretty much daily/weekly, with the arrival at the weekend of my second child I can seriously relate to the more time with family, it means so much and they grow up fast. You had a great year and I suspect another one coming. Keep up the great work.
cool hat; the pattern would make a nice seat pattern. congrats on the 1 year; sounds like it was a blast despite the huge change and transition from your normal. Best of luck in your next year and can't wait for more videos. Speaking of which, now I'm off to that brake stiffening install on the .:R as everything you do helps me do on my mk4; it just takes me 2x - 3x as long. Again, congrats. Cheers.
I'll always support the humble mechanic! Giant red toolbox? Ya that's usually overkill! Even at shops where all the Tech's think it's a way to measure your manhood😂 I love the blue R32! Want one also! Every time I tell someone, there like you mean a skyline? Lmfao never gets old. Love your channel and content! Keep on keeping it real maing!
I'm at a dealership but working on all older toyotas making good money so I'm happy for this land job.hiring me to grow as a tech and make money for my family that grew to 3 kids
LOL "new hat." Those other things are cool too, haha. Appreciate the honesty and humility. Stick with your roots, that's why we started following you in the first place! Thanks for sharing your brains. KT
It is funny how quickly the "new normal" takes over. I have been retired (factory closed) from being a tool maker for Boeing for almost 3 years now. I can't fathom how I used to get up at 3 am for work while I now, much like you, stay UP to 3am LOL!
Left the car dealership world in 2007 and haven't looked back. Making double the money working for a large corporate fleet company. I'll never miss flatrate! I remember how on the Audi side we used to get double the flatrate time for the same jobs on the VW side. Flatrate is horrible.
I was offered a Dealership tech job at a Ford dealership said no thanks I didn't want to get into something I probably wouldn't like so I stick with independent. So those Dealership Tech's out there hats off and the most do respect, at that GREAT video Charles keep them coming.
Totally agree I'm 52 years old and I might have another 10 year's before I retire. I have special izing in Automatic Transmission rebuilding since the 80s right along everything else so I really appreciate you responding back brother, will keep watching those videos.PEACE.
I quit the dealer 23 years ago. I make four times the money as a heavy equipment operator at a union shop. Everything is paid for and Now cars are a hobby and fun again.
My last Dealership was a BMW Dealership. I have been gone a good while. The main thing I miss is being involved with the new models. I always wanted to be involved with electric and hybrid vehicles but I "timed out" (meaning I reached retirement before they became popular). I guess I am going to have to buy my own BMW now if I want to again enjoy the BMW driving experience (The Ultimate Driving Experience)
I can't believe you were at the ShellEco marathon. I was there too. I apart of Sullivan high schools team. We are 3 time national champions and hold the American record at 1899 mpg. Sadly we didn't do to well last year with some car troubles.
I never missed working at the dealer even though I liked fixing cars. At the same time I had a chance to open my own repair shop that I regret not doing. I was working at this place part time anyway fixing cars. I had the customers already. As far as dealers and other businesses losing knowledgeable help I seen this on my last job. They were hiring people within the same age group. Within a year and a half they will all be gone. I told them to get some young blood on the job to learn it. But that was on deaf ears. They don’t have a clue as to what you do till your gone.
This really got me thinking about doing another video on the topic. There are things I miss about the dealer and so much more I learned... What do you think?
HumbleMechanic yes I can’t wait for it glad everything went well on your new adventures
HumbleMechanic After leaving the dealership how do you stay up to date with the latest technology without having any hands on experience and factory training on new VW models? Btw awesome channel!

You're killing it dude! I'm so happy for you, your family, and all of your success this last year. I love your guts! It was awesome being on your team for the Pull-A-Part challenge and hanging out at Road to SEMA. Both were HUGE highlights of my year! Thank you!
One of the most memorable moments of my career..leaving the MB dealer, watching the box take a ride on the tow truck! Love the vids dude!
It really sticks with ya.
You have had a great year and I am happy you are so willing to share so much with your fans. Thank you!
Dave J I agree.. He's a great VW mechanic
My point is learn as many trades as you can. Go to night school. Besides machine building learning how to weld opened up a whole new world for me. Remember when you learn more when you change jobs your education leaves with you.
Yes yes yes
Definitely!
One of the only regrets I have from leaving my dealership (MF Farm Equipment ) is that every year I fall further behind in schooling. Never regret'd it though.

Been wrenching on VW for over 47 years like your channel. Almost retired, getting tired!! LOL
Wow that’s awesome! I bet you have some stories.

Yes, lets hear some of your stories while on the job! Thanks!

I'm still working 4 days a week 11 months a year, however my sow had her first litter so I'm super excited about that and continue to develop my homestead. Ted thank you so much!!!
I'm a newbie on putting videos up.
glad to see you're doing well, i stumbled across your videos when i started to get into basic car maintenance (and got a vw) and you've been big help
"Time" is one our most precious commodities. I'm glad that you can spend more of it at home with family. I hope to retire in a few years and join you in doing other things beside work. :)
I didn't realize that was a year ago! Wow.

Über glad it’s working out for you dude. You are 100% right about the dealer blinders, ditching those made working more fun
Still loving the videos Charles. Thanks again for all of the help you've provided with my Tiguan woes.
I admire your courage and the passion you have to pursue what you wanted to do and to share your knowledge you've accumulated over the years. You won't probably ever see most of your viewers but the knowledge shared will help many careers. Thanks so much and keep up the good work!
❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's been a year WOW man time flies love your vids. Keep it up
The one car RUclipsr I can't see sponsored by the doller shave club :-P
Hahahha. Maybe one day
dollar beard club brother ;)
That's funny.
Have you ever lost a wrench in there?
If the cash is ever in short supply, I bet they would sponsor a shaving video. "The Humble Mechanic - EXPOSED"
Thank you Charles. Congratulations.
This is the best video I have watched for a while, you are so upbeat. Happy for you. Inspired to follow and leave the dealership 👍
Thanks so much. :)
Such a huge fan! Your story is so cool to listen to and as a 1 year experienced mechanic myself, I just wanted to say thank you. I've found a lot of your information very useful or you predict future situations I run into. Keep them coming my man ✋👊

There is life after the dealership I don’t miss the stress and the fast pace work environment and I get to fix and pick what I want to do.
Respect man!
Keep up the good work!

Rock on!!! The ability to not be forced to do a job is awesome.
who would dislike a video this humble ?
18 people that are not fans. 😂😂
The parts department at his old dealership lol
I also broke away from the dealers and the big after market repair shops in the early 90s. I am now semi retired. I seem to remember a few people who predicted I would fail in a week. Bought the wife a 2015 VW golf sportwagen tdi, love the car. Can't wait for the first real road trip. Thankful for finding your page.
Hell yes. Been looking at a TDI myself
Notice that grey streak that’s on Charles’ beard? That’s what happens when all you spew is pure wisdom! Love your videos bro!
Hahahah. Thanks. It has grown for sure.
That's usually from marriage
Very happy you got things going the way you want. Best wishes and all the luck to you. I always watch as much as I can. You've helped out a lot on my car just trying to figure it out. 05 mk4 gli. Long story short plenty gasoline

Your the right guy for transmission.
Well done. Hope your channel grows more and you get some cool cars.
Boo in the tool box bro!! Gotta love the fam!!!

100% nailed it!!! While I miss things about working at the dealer I have not one regret about it.
Congrats on the 1st year man! I’m hoping to leave my job in the future as well. It’s really awesome to see someone who has achieved that. Rock on!

It really did fly by. Thanks for the kind words and support
No bother Charles, Thankyou:):)
What an amazing year! I'm hoping to move my side-hustle to full time and appreciate your encouragement in the video.
Hell yea Mark! Keep hustling man.
markthomasbuilder what is it
Tool reviews along with lawn care advice.
side hustle? seriously?
That's right!
Thanks for all the awesome content, looking forward to more!
You've opened my heart to VW/Audi and German vehicles in general, and I'm a better technician for it. Thank you very much
Careful it sucks you in. lol

Here's to the next year, and beyond.
Dig the hat :)
@3:05. SOUTH OF THE BORDER !!!! LOVE IT. And Charles if you are there again. Go into the 24 hour cafe and get the fried chicken. It will take 20 minutes (cooked to order). But it is worth it.
Thanks. I do love me some fried chicken
Congrats! Hope to see more videos and cool stuff in the coming years.
Thanks so much. Thinks are amazing.
CONGRATS on the little one!!! I appreciate the kind words. It was surely a shift when I left. Still have weird days. HAHA
BRAVO, Charles! Glad you're surviving and kickin' butt!
I just quit my dealer today 🤘🤘
Hell yeah dude
You deserved it Charles! Wish you only the best. Hugs from Italy!
cool hat; the pattern would make a nice seat pattern. congrats on the 1 year; sounds like it was a blast despite the huge change and transition from your normal. Best of luck in your next year and can't wait for more videos. Speaking of which, now I'm off to that brake stiffening install on the .:R as everything you do helps me do on my mk4; it just takes me 2x - 3x as long. Again, congrats. Cheers.
Hell yeah🤘🤘🤘
KT
Yea!! Don't worry we won't get away from the origin of the channel. We are still fixing plenty of cars, and talking about the industry.
Awesome, good to hear. Congrats on the anniversary and on 200K :-)
Congrats on the 1 yr anniversary, and going solo, it’s still a lot of work keep up the good work Brother, 👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
Thank you!
That's awesome. Keep going!
It’s been almost 3 years!!!
HumbleMechanic I take it you really like it!
It is funny how quickly the "new normal" takes over. I have been retired (factory closed) from being a tool maker for Boeing for almost 3 years now. I can't fathom how I used to get up at 3 am for work while I now, much like you, stay UP to 3am LOL!
"dealership blinders" I love it!!!!! also dig the positive vibes about the light at the end of the rat race lolol
Thank you! It’s funny about the blinders. It’s something that I began to see about a year before leaving. It’s fascinating really
Left the car dealership world in 2007 and haven't looked back. Making double the money working for a large corporate fleet company. I'll never miss flatrate! I remember how on the Audi side we used to get double the flatrate time for the same jobs on the VW side. Flatrate is horrible.
Right on! I love hanging out with your wife too!
I was offered a Dealership tech job at a Ford dealership said no thanks I didn't want to get into something I probably wouldn't like so I stick with independent. So those Dealership Tech's out there hats off and the most do respect, at that GREAT video Charles keep them coming.
NICE! Both have pros and cons for sure. I think it really depends on what you are looking to do and get out of the job.
Totally agree I'm 52 years old and I might have another 10 year's before I retire. I have special izing in Automatic Transmission rebuilding since the 80s right along everything else so I really appreciate you responding back brother, will keep watching those videos.PEACE.
Congratulations Charles, you certainly deserve the success!! I am grinding for the same goal myself @Jamison Auto Group
Keep at it man!!!
Can't wait to see what happens over the next 365!
glad to hear things are going well, always like this channel
Thank you.
I quit the dealer 23 years ago. I make four times the money as a heavy equipment operator at a union shop. Everything is paid for and Now cars are a hobby and fun again.
VW Golf IV R32 , it is an amazing car, incredible stabile around corners
Good update 👍
Congrats on 1 year of freedom!
Yea man!!!
I just got my 16v Scirroco up and running again after being down for 15 months
Nice!!!
Just curious how the last year with has been? It’s my dream car but I hear nightmare stories about its reliability. How has it been?
Awesome buddy.
Congrats Charles
My last Dealership was a BMW Dealership. I have been gone a good while. The main thing I miss is being involved with the new models. I always wanted to be involved with electric and hybrid vehicles but I "timed out" (meaning I reached retirement before they became popular). I guess I am going to have to buy my own BMW now if I want to again enjoy the BMW driving experience (The Ultimate Driving Experience)
Entrepreneurship works!!! Good for you!!
Good luck for the future m8😉
Yaaah, no boss apart from Mrs.More time for your kids.Less stress & more happy times.Go for it.Life is to live, not work to death.
less stress? in your dreams, you have a very rose coloured glasses view
I can't believe you were at the ShellEco marathon. I was there too. I apart of Sullivan high schools team. We are 3 time national champions and hold the American record at 1899 mpg. Sadly we didn't do to well last year with some car troubles.
Man I hate y’all didn’t do well. Last year was the first time I’ve been. What a cool event and I’m so jazzed to see so many kids doing cool stuff.
I am so glad that you now see the real world
It's a journey for sure. Still learning new stuff all the time. :)
God bless every step in U life.. U R AWESOME.. 👌👌👌
They don’t have a clue as to what you do till your gone.
much success to you...now you can use that most special word....NO! when u don't want to take a job.
That's a pretty sick hat bro
It really is. Lol
Looking forward to your fcpeuro build.
