This is one of the finest documentaries about the entertainment biz ever produced. Growing up in L.A, I can't think of a time in my life when I didn't know who Rodney was, listening to Rodney on the Rock on KROQ, seeing him pop up on TV or in rock mags. Rodney is a good example of a person trapped by Hollywood, and their past. It's just very difficult to know your best days are behind you, because nothing can top those years. He deserves greater recognition. He was one of those key people who could break a band by breaking them in the L.A. market. He genuinely loves music and brought a lot of it to our attention.

Rodney is the Warhol of the west coast. I remember in the 80s staying up late to hear his show on KROQ. Rodney introduced me to so many cool bands like Unit 3 With Venus, Agent Orange and of course Annette Funicello and the Monkees. Rodney had amazing instincts and always bridged old 60s music, such as the Monkees, with new punk rock like Circle Jerks or Celebrity Skin. This documentary does a great job of capturing Rodney's essence with a star-studded cast including Bowie, Gwen Stefani, Johnny Marr, Joan Jett, and Kim Fowley.

Been there. Dramarama were my high school buds and I lived with them for 7 years from 87-94. Met Rodney many, many, many times. Shy guy, very nice. Best 7 years of my life as I was backstage for all the concerts when they played LA, San Diego, Irvine, Ventura. Lots of stories, met many rockers and celebrities. Rodney, you will always ROCK.

Well were to start, Met Rodney when he was D.J at the Starwood around 1979-81 ish. My 2 girl friends Mickey, Wendy, And I am Cindy, we were always on Rodneys guest list. It was Punk Rock times and we were were pretty wild. We are from Huntington Beach. And would go to the Starwood arleast 2x a weeek for afew years. Rodney is and always will be a star to Hollywood. We used to get these 2 Ballet Dancers in there and they were fabulous, and Rodney would be playing the music for all of us lil Punk Rockers. and everyone else to enjoy. Those ar esome Major times in our lives T.Y Rodney we all love you../.

I remember turning on Rodney's show on night in 79 and being ELECTRIFIED when he put Black Flag on (Keith singing)
made me a Punk that very moment
must say this is one very depressing movie.
Rodney has taken his interest and made it into a career
    good for him
seems to have done Some people some good along the way
    again, good for him
doesn't seem to be treated very well by KROQ
    he's an origional

the man is appreciated by millions but yet loved by no one. hope one day he may feel the joy he has given others. it seemed he was ready to love after years of pain caused by the ones he loved prevented him to be acceptable to it. but his love for music led to the influence of the music of today- that may be his greatest gift of all. kroq is rodney on the rock and rodney on the roq is kroq. he should have been paid like other L.A. djs like rick dees or that goof seacrest.

I grew up in L.A. and just moved to Cleveland area. My introduction to punk as a middle-school kid in 1980 was a Rodney on the ROQ cassette that a friend had. I later listened to him occasionally on the radio, but not nearly as much as the other DJ's at that station. I had no idea then that he was already sort of a legend. I learned just as much from this documentary as you did.

Yep that's a sad thing. I had a good childhood growing up with the music that I did which is definitely different than most junk on today's L.A. radio. 😔 Many people will drool over a talentless artist like Billie Eilish or "Alternative" band/duo/group with the next, best new-wave, pop-ish sound then move on to the next one.

I started listening to music pretty seriously from about age 5 and beyond. Rodney changed my life as a kid growing up in SoCal in the late 70s and early 80s. My dad would be listening to the King Bisquit Flower Hour on 95.5 KLOS while I was kind of secretely gravitating more and more over to Rodney on the ROQ. Then in early grade school, 3rd and 4th grade, this kid came to school, we became friends and his older brother was drumming in a local band that Rodney helped break at the time, Agent Orange. It was great because as I became more aware of and interested in the timeless new wave and punk music that Rodney brought to the airwaves I also gradually started to realize and experience that I was living in a very punk rock town and time. Rodney's contribution changed me and my whole direction as a young drummer and future musician myself that's for damn sure and still to this day. Interesting film. Thanks for posting and thank you Rodney! Maybe I should have tried to shop my band's album to you in the 90s, what was I thinking? Lol

Met Rodney a couple of times over the years..once back stage with Echo & The Bunnymen, and then once at his club in LA. He was not too nice the 2nd time..but I don't care. This guy turned me on to great Punk Rock, 60's Garage, and Brit-rock/pop. Always a legend for The Southern Ca music scene.

Booked them and it was ahead of their 'official' LA debut later that night at the Roxy.

You know, you would think with all these big-time celebrities out there from the past if that is still alive waiting for their death. You would think one of them would come forward, maybe gather a group of them together and put a place on the Sunset strip for a club that Rodney could run the way he wants to run it with a museum with all the cool stuff that he’s come up with throughout this amazing career of just being a bad ass. So if you know anyone that he knows, give them a good pat on the back and say, it’s your time to shine there Jack. Spread the news. And with any luck at all, something amazing will happen once again in this man’s life. Because everything he’s done, he’s given to us. All of it. He missed nothing. Everything that he got, he just threw it right in our laps like it was free. And you know what, it was. God bless Rodney.

I greatly enjoyed witnessing the entire process of this DOC, from its inception of what might’ve just been a coffee table book -via Producer/Sirius XM DJ Chris Carter-into a incredibly interesting documentary about the life and Times of one of the most important influencers in modern music. in full disc closure. I have a song in the closing credits “for…the time being” by my band like experience Cosmo Topper. that said, there’s an extremely happy ending to what might be deemed a bitter, sweet movie,
and that is Little Steven sought out Rodney and with the help of a lot of his dear friends, Rodney now has a permanent home on Little Steven’s underground garage, channel 21 on SiriusXM every Sunday night primetime. so this bittersweet story has an extremely happy ending and somehow they should re release this doc with bonus footage that illustrates just how happy Rodney is with the next chapter of his life that took place after this film was released mb

I know, that's very sad that his dad and family pretty much treated him as some kind of outcast. What's interesting is that Rodney had a much more interesting and fulfilling life in doing everything he did and getting to know so many interesting and creative people. I feel that he should have been paid more for all that he did for all those bands, but he is such a humble, honest, and honorable guy that he was happy with helping to boost so many bands' careers in airing their music which he genuinely enjoyed listening to. Rock on Rodney as you will always be known as The Mayor of the Sunset Strip!

I sure hope he had some kind of retirement package or a pension of some sort from KROQ, though I tend to doubt it. I really hate to think of him being destitute somewhere in LA. Especially after he had done so much to bring some great artists into the American music scene.

This documentary is very interesting! It started with Rodney's parents, who both had an infatuation with Hollywood/celebrities, teaching him the foundation for what was to become of his future! It’s cool to see such a person have so much influence on music and that many close relationships with famous musical artists! Very cool, I want to wish the Mayor of the Sunset strip all my best! In my young years it was the 18 and under clubs like the starwood, gazarris, whisky, Roxy and l.a. cubs in general.
All the years and the people and band members have known i have realised.
No mater how beautiful or handsome or rich and successful the people out there are just scratch the surface and you will find pain, fear, anger, and family rejection.
Hollywood is the land of the broken people I've seen it all.

Rodney could have been a concert promoter, like a Bill Graham, but then he WOULD have had an ulterior motive. It was not in Rodney to do that, and now I guess KROQ has finally fired him and he will go to satellite radio.
