    oh my gosh, Mostly I hear/read only gay shippers, that find them cute, but percive good omens as queer baiting, but it in not and I am so endlessly glad, that you called it out! It is a asexual love story!
    In the book it is even explicitly pointed out, that Zira is not gay, though everyone who meets him assumes that, but not because he is straight, but because angels are sexless/asexual being and even him having a clear gender is up to debate (which is also why I absolutly love fem Crowley).
    They love eachother, but that means something different for everyone and it is oh so sweet to see a portrail that showes my reality ^^

      it is just, they so clearly love eachother and sadly, almost all portrails of love kind of hinge on sexual attraction and infectuation with a first impression over genuine care for eachother. Good omens is so touching and refreshing to watch (and read) in contrast.
      even more, getting aknowlagement, than not everything has to be sexual or even outright romantic, and that that is not at all a dismisal of their love is god damned rare so I am really greatful for you to shine a light on that ^^

Maybe some chaste physical affection, but nothing beyond that. Contrary to what the media and general society tells us, you do not have to experience sexual attraction to someone to still be deeply in love with them.

    So, I would actually respectfully disagree with the assessment on God. In the book, God only pops in to narrate certain pages and never stays for long. It's supposed to be this nonchalant omnipotent being who knows all, sees all, and expects all. So, I actually quite liked the nonchalance that Frances McDormand implemented. I think it kind of fits a being who is as old, if not older, than time itself and has retreated back to let the angels and demons handle things.

    I saw the show before reading the book. I didn’t grow up with the book. However, I DID grow up with Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series-my parents would play the audiobooks in our car on trips. We rewatched the Hogfather miniseries every couple years. Seeing and hearing Terry’s distinct style of satirical fantasy in a modern TV series felt both new and nostalgic at the same time. and seeing that series become very popular with people my age-and then finding out how and why the series was made in the first place-really warmed my heart.

    I was born in Wincanton, a small town in Somerset, which is officially twinned with Ankh Morpork. There's a shop that sells officially licensed merchandise based on Pratchett's various works, and a local fan club/nerd gathering which Pratchett occasionally attended and dubbed The Loonies. I went to a few Loonies meet ups, however Terry died before I got the chance to meet him. The Good Omens show seems like a truly faithful adaptation, maintaining his ironic creativity. I highly recommend looking up some quotes from Pratchett's other works if you don't want to read the whole books, especially anything said by Vimes or Granny.

    • @skywritingstories17
      @skywritingstories17  Год назад +1

      I love Discworld and beyond a few of the Tiffany Aching books, I think Ive read most of them. Sam Vimes is a great character study in so many of the watch books and he, along with granny and death, feel like the heart and soul of Discworld.

  • @Sabbathtage
    @Sabbathtage Год назад +24

    I think you have some misunderstanding about Death. Does Good Omens use the Death from the Discworld series? Yes and no.
    The characterization of Death in Discworld changed a lot over the series. In the early books he's a cold and arrogant. The way he treats humanity and the way chases Rincewind is as a scary, more traditional version of the Grim Reaper. He had changed so much people either forget this or never knew.
    The Good Omen's Death is faithful to the interpretation the authors originally used at the time. The kindly Discworld Death was never meant to fit into this story. I personally believe the gentle, later version of Death would not belong here.

    • @skywritingstories17
      @skywritingstories17  Год назад +3

      I think you’re right in that the Disc World death wouldn’t fit in GO very well but like I said he does have some humorous lines that were either cut or stepped on by Brian Cox. Like the GO death is maybe a bit more sassy/ dramatic with his characterisation. Like in the book someone mentions Elvis working in fast food kitchen and death claims that no matter what anyone says he never came for him. Like that’s pretty sassy. I think with Pratchett’s death still really fresh in people’s hearts there was just a lot of expectation on the character and it under delivered.

    I'm eagerly anticipating season 2 because despite the few shortcomings of this show I feel like Crowley and Aziraphale are the heart of it, even if the story isn't all about them the way they have a montage of scenes where they run into each other in the past, the escaping and unlearning the status quo of their worlds, enjoying being on earth and being in a type of LGBT relationship you don't normally see is beautiful and could be a story on it's own (which is what season 2 is for)

    I'm gonna make a confession: When the 1st TV miniseries of Good Omens came out, I had never read the book. I'm not sure I knew it existed. I tend to hyperfocus on one favorite thing in the media for years, and I've had a cycle of Star Trek/Lord of the Rings/Doctor Who going for at least three decades. Now Good Omens has squeezed itself into the cycle, very much helped by the fact that David Tennant is my favorite actor ever. (I'm sure Michael Sheen will also be top rank if I ever find any of his other stuff). I now have the book and yes, I've finally read it, and it will definitely join the cycle. I've got the DVD of the first series and I will get the 2nd series when it comes out, and the 3rd (which HAS TO HAPPEN, quick as you can, Neil, if you don't mind). And I'm reading fanfic too and might start writing it if I'm not careful. Oh no whatever shall I do?! 😜

    i honestly wish that the tv show hadn’t been so hyper focused on aziraphale and crowley. like you can tell that they were given the most attention by the team who created the show, which is sad to me, because good omens isn’t JUST about az and crowley’s love story; it’s about adam and the Them just trying to be normal little kids while the world is ending, it’s about newton helping anathema adjust to a different lifestyle where she isn’t dependent on agnes’ prophecies, it’s about madam tracy taking care of shadwell. and i really wish that the show had taken these things to heart and give some more love to the other characters.
    also, THANK YOU for talking about how az and crowley ARE asexual, because i think that’s something that people in the fandom always forget, that their love for each other is meant to go beyond normal human romance. like, c’mon, they’ve known each other for thousands of years, so their relationship is going to be VERY different from any of ours.

    • @skywritingstories17
      @skywritingstories17  Год назад +2

      So I can see where the show was lacking in terms of the Them storyline, as well as Newton and Anathema could use more character development, but I think the way Neil had to sell it to Amazon was by focusing on the AZ and Crowley storyline. Especially once Tennet and Sheen signed on. But I can see where more focus could’ve been given to enrich the show overall.
      And you’re welcome about mentioning the Asexual nature of their relationship. Representation matters and I think it does the world good to see different kinds of relationships.

Every Good Omens or Neil/Pratchett fan should see this video, I'm one of them and if this series wasn't the most beautiful love letter to a friend, I don't know what it is.

    This is an excellent video, but I disagree on one point. Pratchett and Gaiman each have a very unique version of Death in their most famous works, Discworld and Sandman respectively. Having the version of Death in the Good Omens show be differentiated from both of them, I think, works in the shows favor.

    • @skywritingstories17
      @skywritingstories17  Год назад +1

      That’s true that the death’s should be considered different. I think I was just upset that the GO death had its role cut down significantly from the book for what I imagine were time/budget constraints and Brian Cox’s performance was pretty lacklustre. Which normally would be fine but when Death is such a famous character from both writers AND the fact that Pratchett had recently passed a few years earlier probably set expectations for the character higher than Gaiman or anyone could’ve expected.

    Sir Terry Pratchett awakens. A skeleton stands at his bedside, wearing a long black robe. He sits up. “Hang on, let me get my hat,” he tells it.
    The skeleton reaches into its robe. From abyssal depths it produces a heavy book bound in sheets of lead and night. It is the kind of book that gets stolen by a rugged adventurer from a temple with more spike traps than the average house of worship contains. It’s the kind of book to which the word “tome” might probably be applied. Frost forms on its pages from the lingering chill of the void.
    The skeleton coughs once and holds the book out to the man sitting on the bed.
    *WOULD YOU SIGN THIS?* It asks. *I’M A BIG FAN* .

    Beautiful video! You really do manage to put the finger on the strengths AND the weaknesses of this series!
    I, also, was a bit disappointed with Adam, and the kids' part in general. In the book, they tend to be much more interesting and captivating, which is somehow lost in the adaptation (due to maybe average acting, or shortening of the dialogues? Not sure about that). And right, some jokes just feel awkward.
    However! The show is so wholesome and adorable that you cannot help falling in love with it... Those parallels one can draw between Terry and Niel's friendship and Aziraphale and Crowly's are almost heartbreaking, and love is everywhere to be found in this production. Could have done without the cringy cosplay and fan art though 😂, but I do LOVE this fandom!

    Couple of things:
    Pratchett and Gaiman both explicitly said they don't know who wrote what by the end,
    so no idea where you're getting this 66-33% divide from
    Second, you can't criticise the show version of Death as being different from the Death of Discworld when the character in the Good Omens book is markedly different. That's comparing apples to oranges.

    • @skywritingstories17
      @skywritingstories17  Год назад +3

      There’s a quote on the Good Omens wiki from Neil Gaiman that says Pratchett wrote about 65,000 raw words and Gaiman wrote about 45,000. They then obviously went over each others work during the editing process.
      As I mentioned in the video, the GO death isn’t the Disc world death but they do both have a lot of the same characteristics i.e. sarcasm, sassiness, great one liners. So instead of comparing apples to oranges it’s more like comparing Fuji Apples to Red Delicious ones. And honestly It’s more of a criticism of Brian Cox’s performance than anything.

      Kind of…Gaiman came up with the opening chapter idea first then started Sandman. Pratchett then wanted to write GO which meant Gaiman had to write Sandman and GO simultaneously and because it takes longer to edit a whole book than a few issues of a comic book, Sandman came out first.

      @Sky Writing Stories I agree Crowley and Aziraphael and their associates worked fine as they were meant to be out of place in anytime period. But the other characters were trying to stay faithful to their original personalities and quirks, but being surrounded by a different environment which stopped them fitting in. Also, Famine in the 80s as a hovering presence made sense when we saw it on our nightly news in other parts of the world and people living in poverty in out own part of the world. Where as these days we have the opposite problem with people consuming too much, and often of low nutritional quality but high in calories. Reframing this one Horseman like the book did already with Pestilence being replaced with Pollution, might have made more sense for our modern world.

    Angels and demons are not human. Human categories of identity and orientation don't apply, by definition. This shows the danger of "reading into" a book. (It's a thoroughly democratic risk, applying to everyone of any persuasion at any time. )
    In my experience and reading, humans are messy, full of changes, contradictions and nuances. Here we elevate our messiness to an art form.

    They aren't ACE, they appear to be more 'demi sexual'. Considering that the smooch at the end. At first Aziraphale pulls him close, then pushes him away. He does it more out of fear and confusion than anything else. Yes they are queer (like I am), but that's all we know for now. They even said that angels are 'genderless' unless they "Try very hard". Because they don't have physical bodies unless granted them. Crowley obviously desires Aziraphale, but Aziraphale doesn't seem to understand yet, or is afraid to give in. Crowley seems to be genderfluid like me, but I'm stuck between female and unisex, but never go more male than that, but I've been called male on multiple occasions. So I fall under the very edge of the transgender umbrella.
