Who else was today years old when they learned the thing about preheating ovens? 😂 I just made these and they are delicious. I never would have thought this recipe would showcase all of our farm ingredients! Eggs, milk, and maple syrup. I also added some vanilla that my friend gave me for Christmas!
I am 76 y/o and consider myself a fairly knowledgeable cook. I learn new things from you each time in your very new channel - tho I've followed R&R for some time. You are a great educator, thank you!
This channel is a game changer. I have relied on recipes for decades because I didn't feel confident that I could put together ingredients in "proper" ratios to taste good. You're opening up my mind to possibilities and making things look so simple. Thank you!
Oh my goodness! AGAIN, ANOTHER perfect timing recipe for me to make over Christmas! With 16 people staying overnight, 10 r grandkids, this sounds perfect!!! LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!! 👍👍🤩🤩
I make this all the time and we call them German pancakes and put fresh lemon juice and confectionary sugar on top. Great day or night. Love your channels.
half cup flour (I use spelt), half cup milk mix together add 3 eggs and real 1 tsp. vanilla mix together bake in a glass baking dish 8X8 with that has been in the oven melting about 2 Tbs of butter and bake about 20 minutes at 400 degrees F @@frasersgirl4383
I wrote it as you said it cuz i knew this would be a keeper. I like your point that it is protein and less carbs. The idea in a comment below is heating sliced apples in the butter while it melts is a great one. Actually any fruit. I enjoy the comments almost as much as the video
I make an "apple puffed pancake" which is the same thing except the batter is poured over apple slices sizzling in butter... and a half recipe works in a pie plate and it puffs up beautifully in a circle and the whole edge is yummy! (ETA it's like a magic trick because the apples end up on top!)
I sprinkle lemon juice over my Dutch baby after it is finished, then add fresh berries. My kids top it off with powdered sugar, but I top it with Greek yogurt, then the berries. Then top that with honey. I also substitute honey for sugar in the Dutch baby batter, using half the amount of honey than the sugar , since honey is sweeter than sugar in my opinion.
Hi! Very interested in your recipe. Do you peel the apples, do you put spices in? My husband loves all things apple, I would love to surprise him with this apple breakfast
@@carolgladney9890 in a blender I mix 6 eggs/1.5 cups whole milk/1 cup flour/3 Tbs sugar and some cinnamon and vanilla... meanwhile in a 9X13 in the oven I melt a stick of butter and peel and slice thin 2 large apples... when the butter melts lay the apple slices in a layer and pop back in the oven (425) until sizzling - around 7 minutes ... then pour the batter gently over the apples, sprinkle brown sugar on top and bake about 20-25 minutes until puffed and cooked through... it makes a lot so 1/2 the recipe in a pie plate is perfect! enjoy!
Jess, I'd love for you to try this recipe! We call it "Mountain Man Pancakes". You take regular pancake batter and add shredded potato, finely diced onion, and shredded cheese & cook like a regular pancake, enjoy with maple syrup. I know it sounds weird, but it is such a delectable combination of savory and sweet.
Wow Jess, I’m 65 years old and one of my passions is cooking and just learned something new. Didn’t realize the heating of an oven before. I’ll have to pass this information down to our 3 sons and daughter who also have a passion for cooking. I love learning new things! Thank you so much! Oh, as I’m watching this I’m sipping on a lovely Beulah cup of coffee.( Still morning here in North Idaho).
Jess any family make ahead breakfast casserole recipes, sweet ones or savory ones? I like that you go to organic ingredients in your cooking when you can.
Been making these for 12 years now and we always put the butter into the dish in the oven while it is preheating and once we have the mix ready to pour the butter is melted in the dish and ready. Works perfectly
Love Dutch baby pancakes! When I was in elementary school my mom bought a church congregation cookbook at a yard sale. It had this recipe in it and it was called “Swedish oven pancake.” It quickly became my family’s favorite breakfast dish. Yummy!
Swede here - we skip the Swedish part and call it just ugnspannkaka (oven pancake) or tjockpannkaka (thick pancake). My favourite way is to have bacon bits in it 😋
I love Dutch Babies. I've been making them for 50+ years. My recipe came from a 1970's Sunset Magazine. My e-z version is sprinkling of powdered sugar and a squirt of lemon juice, but my favorite way is topped with cottage cheese, fresh strawberries and garnished with a dusting of powdered sugar and a dash of cinnamon. To eliminate pockets of flour in the batter, start the blender with just eggs and milk then add flour through the top as you blend.
The Dutch baby is very similar to Yorkshire pudding……a traditional English dish that is never sweet but savory and usually served with roast beef and gravy. It’s delicious!
Haha! It used to get sweet in our nans house as left overs from a beef dinner - she would then sprinkle some sugar in them after and give us one of those 🤣🙌🏼 what a time to have been a kid back then!
If you start with a cold oven, the Dutch baby pancake will have a thicker custard layer. Try it!! All you need to do is put some melted butter in the pan, ( or melt the butter on the stove on light heat. Then pour in the batter. Put in a cold oven and immediately set to 375, cook about 30 minutes! Thick custard and nice puffy sides! 😊
I just have to say this...I am a pretty good cook but I am always interested in cooking shows because I often pick up little nuggets that I love and you have soo many little nuggets that I am incorporating in my cooking. Last week it was adding lemon juice to my homemade soup this week it's the tea leaf thingy that I never would have thought of using to sprinkle a dusting of sugar. Thanks, love it❤
I made this for breakfast this morning. My 16 year old son said if French toast and pancakes had a baby- this is it! Both kids want it every morning now so we can try different variations!
Jess, do you ever add fruit to the bottom of your Dutch Babies? That's our favorite way to make them. Apples are traditional, I think. But we love pears or peaches, too. And blueberries are fantastic! We've tried fresh, frozen, and even canned fruits, and they all turn out great. 🍎🍐🍑🫐
Our favorite is pears (raw), sliced thin, and layered over the top of the batter. They'll sink on their own. Sprinkle cinnamon on top, bake, drizzle a bit of lemon juice over the butter and powdered sugar when done.
@jamjar5716 Yep. Melt the butter. Then add the fruit. Back in the oven to heat the fruit for 3-5min and get the pan hot again. Then add the egg batter and finish cooking.
Dutch Baby is one of my go-to comfort foods. I make just for one person with a base of 1/4 cup of flour and 2 eggs in a pie size pan. It literally takes me like 5 mins since I put it in to a cold oven and set it to 500º and it’s ready in 18 mins. It’s delicious. I’ve never tried with nutmeg and cinnamon, I’ll try that next time.
Oh Jess I made it today on Christmas morning and everyone was unsure till they ate the first bite! Only made one pan. Will have to make three next Christmas! Thank you for giving us a recipe to add to our special Day. I thank the Lord for you and your family today. Blessings. 😊
Vanilla beans sliced down the length of them. Stick in a bottle of bourbon. (Or spiced rum or vodka) Let sit in a dark place for 8weeks or longer. You can leave the beans in and start using, or strain. I leave the beans in. Acre Homestead has a video on it/how many to use.
I'm very much enjoying the new channel. Thanks, Jess! I tried this Dutch Baby recipe last weekend, but used rolled oats I blended up into a coarse flour instead of all purpose flour. It turned out great! Not as fluffy coming out of the oven, but since any Dutch Baby deflates quickly, we didn't mind a flatter version at all. And it was delish with cooked apples and cinnamon.
I grew up calling those "German Pancakes" don't know how normal our name for it was but we make this for dinner if we need quick, but also feeling breakfast for dinner. I can mix it and get it in the oven help kids get ready for the day. Love it
Jess! You’ve just changed my life with the tea-ball strainer and powdered sugar!!!! We make dutch baby pancakes all the time. I never thought to use a strainer instead of my sifter. Way easier clean up! Thank you and god bless.
Just came back to say I made this for Christmas breakfast with blueberries and powdered sugar. Served it with scratch-made eggnog and orange juice 🤤 It was so good and will totally be a staple recipe for my family.
Before I stoped eating flour I used to make them for my family when the kids were small. With a squeeze of fresh lemon and some powdered sugar sifted over it SO good!!
Love this! Thanks for sharing ❤ I agree with cracking the egg into a little cup or bowl first so the whole batch isn't contaminated by ine possible bad egg. I did that once and it was a shame I had to throw the whole breakfast in the trash. Never again. Our hens work too hard to lay these beautiful eggs lol.
Thank you! This saved Christmas morning for me for various reasons. It was my first time making and quite frankly I would never have tried but I watched this the other day and you made it feel so approachable!
I just made these for breakfast with some partially thawed blueberries...yum! And, I didn't have any milk so I used coconut milk instead and they were still perfect! A new quick favorite.😊
Yes I make these too. Called German Apple Pancakes in this house and yes with apples (and whipped cream) & only on Christmas morning so it's special. 😁🎄
Jess, I LOVE this new channel!! Love R & R too, of course! I used to hate to cook but the more I learn, the more I enjoy it. Bless you for sharing your skills and beautiful heart with all of us!
Tried my first Dutch baby today... should have used a bigger pan. But my 16 month old and I enjoyed my first attempt without complaints with a little powdered sugar and bananas. Thank you for motivating me yo finally make one! I'll perfect it one day
This is absolutely one of my favorite ways to keep my kids full and happy. We started putting pumpkin in ours and putting a little pumpkin pie spice and dish of vanilla and it was a perfect fall treat.
Blueberries with lemon zest, fresh cranberries with orange zest, or apples and cinnamon. I LOVE Dutch babies. It’s my go to quick dinner in summer when i don’t feel like cooking or standing over the stove flipping pancakes. While it bakes, i can fry some bacon in our air fryer, dinner is done in no time!
I just found your channel and I LOVE IT!! I've always been really interested in cooking, but felt like there was so much to learn that I would never be a good instinctive cook, but your videos are so encouraging! You make it seem so possible and novice friendly, we're all constantly learning at the end of the day! God bless you, keep it up!
I love love love your site. You young lady are amazing, you are well spoken and know exactly what your doing. I have been in the food industry for over thirty years and girl you I would have you on my crew in a heart beat. Thank you and have a great day, you sure made mine
Always great to tune in Jess , the recipes are fun and easy for every body.. What I love the most about what you are cooking is the fact that you are making these simple recipes with the best and freshest ingredients that can be had, how lucky you are living the farm life..
Yay!! Im so glad you are making these for us!!! My grandma used to make them for us all the time and i absolutely loved them!!! Definitely one of my all time favorites! She always made them in individual pie pans so each person got their own perfectly round and plate sized portion. I was blessed enough to get her recipe before it was too late to get anymore and im the only one who still makes them for everyone. I have always had six pie pans available for them since i had my own kitchen. We like to make strawberry compote for the top but my favorite was grandmas favorite; just a squeeze of lemon and powdered sugar on top! Thanks for these memories and my warm heart along with this smile!! Love you Jess!
I started watching you last year on your other channel and learned so much about gardening. I am loving this new channel so much too! Thanks for sharing so much with us 😊
This is great Jess! Never heard of these before but will be Trying them soon. Loving your new channel!!! I'm southern (NC) and love your style of cooking. Like being in the kitchen with family!!
Another great basic recipe! Jess I noticed you are preheating the stoneware and putting cold ingredients into the hot pan. I love stoneware but I’m always scared to do that. You shared your egg nightmare story and here is mine. 😮 True story, when I was a young cook, I was following my mother in laws, recipe to make an oven omelet. I used the only pan I had in the size recommended and it was GLASS. The dish blew up when I poured the cold egg mixture into the preheated glass pan. (I know that’s basic science but I was just learning to cook) . Fortunately I never got hurt when the glass exploded but my oven and kitchen was covered in small shards of glass that took forever to clean up. Years later I would be spring clearing and still find shards of glass. 🤷🏼♀️ ⚠️ I invite you to consider adding a caution to the recipe for novice cooks like I was. This actually would be a great future topic. Baking in glass is different from cast iron or metal.
I grew up on a farm and as a kid I found it weird when people didn't first crack their eggs in a separate dish. 😆 Now I'm so thankful for that little habit.
I've made Dutch baby's for years - but have never tried the GF variation but certainly will - as I have a daughter recently diagnosed with celiac. Thank you! I usually top with a little butter, lemon juice and then dust with powdered sugar! So scrumptious.
I just made them for the second time using home ground whole wheat flour. The dozen eggs I used were ones I had experimented with dehydrating. Even using dehydrated eggs & home milled flour, this recipe still turned out amazing! So versatile & yummy with a little bit of strawberry jam ❤
Gosh, i found you for growing tomatoes and building trellises on the cheap and now I’m finally learning to cook real food! Late in life diagnosed with adhd, i feel like i coulda had a family if you were around when i needed to learn these things, buti was never brave enough to be a single, manic, working parent, and took the way of the childless artist. Whatever you want to teach, I’m here for, and i thank you deeply for your unending bravery.
I made dutch baby pancake for my step mom last weekend. She had never had one before. I also made a basic blueberry syrup to go on top. We were making blueberry preserves since she had gotten a large quantity of blueberries given to her recently. So good
Perfect timing…I have a cup of Beulah Loose Leaf Warm Spiced Orange Tea and bread rising. Sooooo here we go with another wonderful recipe for my family 🤍🤍🤍
How is the tea?? My husband got me some coffee for Christmas. It was unfortunately delivered while I was home, so the cat’s out of the bag, but I’m saving it for Christmas morning. I may have to make a Dutch baby too!
I discovered German Pancakes at a Smitty's Pancake House in Lewiston Idaho during the 1970's! I was so sad when one time I went in and it wasn't on the menus anymore.😕 Lucky for me the manager knew how to make them and he did for me! From there I learned to make them myself! I think every European country has some similar version of this recipe. My husband's family make Swedish pancakes. Very similar ingredients but they are fried like a crepe served, in his family, with brown sugar and butter. My heritage covers both these countries! Merry Christmas! 💛🎄💚🎄💜🎄💙🎄🐸😎
❤ Making for quick meal grabs in the refrigerator for the family since I’ll be working 6 days straight. Everyone says they heat up quickly in the microwave and are so filling that they can only eat one 3”x3” piece at a time. I skip the powder sugar because everyone seems to love the topped with jelly or syrup. THANK 😊YOU!
Been making these since I was 12 years old. 50 years… wow just calculated that. 🤪 I use a 10” cast iron pan for a 1/2 recipe. They can also be used for both sweet and savory. My family calls these oven pancakes. I also use 3T melted butter. Mixed into the batter.
Thank you so much for including a gluten free version. I haven't tried any gluten free baking but after a year of eating gluten free I kind of want to try baking some things. I'm loving this new channel!
Thank you for sharing. I have significant problem with gluten, so making this non-gluten was very informative. I made this , this morning and it was great. Appreciate you!😊
Oh my gosh, I've just never even thought about the coils in the oven being so hot to preheat. It makes sense, I've just never given it thought. Thanks for the tid bit!
I love Dutch Babies and will do a 1/2 recipe for myself. I will put some brown sugar and sliced apples in the bottom while the oven is heating and then add the batter for apple Dutch Baby. Or brown sugar and pecans. Blueberries work really well too. I will throw a handful of frozen blueberries in the bottom of the pan while heating.
Jess, I am gluten free and I added 2 tsp of baking soda to the batter. It rose nicely and has a great texture. I use the Pamala’s 1 to 1 gluten free flour.
This is filling my cup and making me jump for joy, Jess!!!! Thank you for adding in a GF version. So many recipes are not easily converted to GF and I can't wait to add this to my list! ❤
Jess, I am gluten free for health reasons since I was a kid. My granddaughter and daughter are GF as well. So life has been more scratch cooking than anything. GF baking is definitely challenging. My daughter is better at it than I am. Doing anything on this channel that is GF would be so awesome. maybe even a guest that can help support the process would be cool. Thanks for the bulk buying idea. My daughter does it on a monthly subscription, but this sounds like a better idea. She has gotten good at GF sour dough bread! Thanks💗
At 4500 ft altitude: Made this recipe in a 9 x 9 glass casserole dish, cut ingredients in half. Turned up the heat to 425 degrees and baked for 8 minutes. Perfection!
Yay! I’m on my first rise with your bread recipe right now and all of the sudden you upload a new video?!?! I’m gonna watch while I wait. Thank you for sharing the “waiting room classroom” outlook because I’ve been in my apartment for 4 years, ever since my pregnancy with my first baby, and only now in the last 6 months have been blessed to stay home and keep the house. I’ve learned so many skills in that short time that have already saved my kids from a lifetime of eating our old ways. I’m finally putting pen to paper to budget our first bulk buy ingredients and couldn’t be more excited to try all your recipes as this channel grows. again, Thank you thank you!
Yum! Going to have to put this in the rotation for quick suppers and try it sweet and savory to figure out my favorite. I do french toast a lot and this looks even easier
I've heard many people like to use powdered sugar and a squeeze of lemon. Sounds good to me! So glad you are showing how to do the gluten-free version! Lots of us out there! Now I can make a Dutch Baby GF! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing! Currently eating them and they are great! Added some berries on the bottom. My husband said it’s almost like a cross between pancake and French toast. We like it!
I made this after watching this video, we added in fresh blueberries then drizzled honey on top and it was amazing! And so simple, thanks for the inspiration Jess 😋
Jess, I am so thankful for your new channel and I spotted this one after finishing up my joyful responsibilities on my mini-farmstead. I just got my new grain mill and organic wheat berries and I’m so excited about this being the first thing I make with my fresh ground flour. Just so you know I love your Roots and Refuge channel and started following you on your AR farm. You have no idea how thankful to God I am that you moved to my state and look forward to your brick and mortar grand opening.
When my boys were growing up and had a friend spend the night, Dutch babies were always the request. I have never added any seasoning! What a great idea...might have to try it. We always use maple syrup

Yes I make these too. Called German Apple Pancakes in this house and yes with apples (and whipped cream) & only on Christmas morning so it's special. 😁🎄
Yummy 😋
Do you put fresh apples on top after it's baked, or do you bake the apples in?
I love making Dutch baby. They keep great in the fridge and then reheat in the air fryer
I have to say that in all my years of cooking, I had never heard of these.😢 Guess what this girl is gonna be trying!?!😁 Thanks Jess! YOU ROCK!!❤
I like your powdered sugar hack!!
Thanks for the dinner idea! Preheating the oven now
Jess, I LOVE this new channel!! Love R & R too, of course! I used to hate to cook but the more I learn, the more I enjoy it. Bless you for sharing your skills and beautiful heart with all of us!
I made this for my family this morning & it was a hit. I could not believe how easy it was. Thank you for sharing.
I would buy a cookbook from you so quick. I love that you have easy to remember measurements and you don't overcomplicate.
Watching this when you are hungry is not advised LOL I had a million ideas for 'things to add' running through my head.
Welcome!! Thank you so much!
Never heard of these before but will be
Trying them soon. Loving your new channel!!! I'm southern (NC) and love your style of cooking. Like being in the kitchen with family!!
Bless you.! I am not feeling great at the moment and it never occurred to me I could bake pancakes in a pan. This was so quick and easy today.
I do Sourdough Dutch Baby and my husband does regular Dutch Baby. It's our go to Friday morning breakfast. ☺️
Do they perform differentl?
Thank you for doing them side by side to see the GF results and making these look so easy.
Another great basic recipe!
Jess I noticed you are preheating the stoneware and putting cold ingredients into the hot pan. I love stoneware but I’m always scared to do that. You shared your egg nightmare story and here is mine. 😮
True story, when I was a young cook, I was following my mother in laws, recipe to make an oven omelet. 🤷🏼♀️
⚠️ I invite you to consider adding a caution to the recipe for novice cooks like I was.
This actually would be a great future topic. Baking in glass is different from cast iron or metal.
I grew up on a farm and as a kid I found it weird when people didn't first crack their eggs in a separate dish. 😆 Now I'm so thankful for that little habit.
I’ve made a similar recipe but put sautéed cinnamon apples as a filling❣️Yummy
I've made Dutch baby's for years - but have never tried the GF variation but certainly will - as I have a daughter recently diagnosed with celiac. Thank you! I usually top with a little butter, lemon juice and then dust with powdered sugar! So scrumptious.
We love Dutch baby! It’s a frequent flier for weekend breakfast.
I just made them for the second time using home ground whole wheat flour. The dozen eggs I used were ones I had experimented with dehydrating. Even using dehydrated eggs & home milled flour, this recipe still turned out amazing! So versatile & yummy with a little bit of strawberry jam ❤
Love that you did a gluten free recipe! Would love to see more! - Leona
So good
I came back to this video to comment that I’ve made these so many times and they are so delicious and easy to make!!!! Thankkkkssss !!!
@@ErinCrooks-vw3ig the tea is absolutely wonderful! I make a lot of my tea’s from my kitchen garden but this tea is one of my all time favorites 🤍
I use a 10” cast iron pan for a 1/2 recipe.
Jess, I love your tips, great information!
That simple ratio will help save me so much time from looking specific recipes online every time! Thank you
Thank you!
Oh how I love learning from and watching you!! Love Dutch pancakes so so good
Thank you for sharing!
I've always called them popovers, and I love them!!! It would be fun to watch you cook a beef roast and make Yorkshire Pudding on the side😊
Thank you for this yummy recipe! Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
I made this today for Christmas brunch. It was hit!! Thank you, and Merry Christmas!!
Jess, we make these! Our favorite topping is homemade apple butter! Soooo good! Thanks for sharing!
