- I am raising Luna moths for the first time!
I love these moths and I have been wanting to raise them for so long!
So I decided to buy eggs online
Firstly I need to hatch the eggs! I have previously said to spray eggs with water but this is incorrect!
Instead keep them in an airtight tub and open the lid daily for fresh air
This seems to work a lot better!
Next I need to make sure all the caterpillar’s stay alive!
I find this part the most nerve wracking
After a week or so the caterpillars will shed and grow bigger called the next instar
Once they are a lot bigger I keep them in a vivarium so there not overcrowded but I know other people will use large tubs too, just make sure theirs plenty of ventilation in at this later stage
The caterpillar’s will spin a silk cocoon after 1-2 months of munching leaves and they will spend a few weeks pupating
Once the moth hatched he is the most beautiful moth! A tiny moth with a white fluffy body!
I did some macro photography with the caterpillars and the moths which I hope you enjoy
I love seeing close up images of these amazing moths
I used Laowa macro lens 65mm x2 magnification and a canon m50
For light diffusion I use a Cygnustech diffuser (search them on Instagram)
I am also raising loads of other moths as well as keeping jumping spiders
I have loads of attacus atlas moth caterpillars at the moment and some cocoons I have waiting to hatch such as the African moon moth and elephant hawk moths and deaths head hawk moths!
Please check out my other videos to see more of these

Caterpillars are such cute babies 🖤 I live rising bugs in general but I am eager to rise moths again
@sad loves to keep caterpillars!
Wow, beautiful luna moths. I hope I'll be able to find some of their cocoons one day
I hope you find some 🥰
I've been doing Polyphemus moths overwintering starting 2022, and I love Polyphemus moths, but I also thought it would be nice to overwinter luna moths and Cecropia moths too. I heard luna moths were in leaf litter to overwinter, is that why they're harder to find? I see lots of Polyphemus cocoons in the trees. The cecropia cocoons we ordered online arrived healthy but died and never hatched 😔
So, I think the reason you lost a few are because of the enclosures you keep them in. They need much more air than that. They don't do well in humidity. So open mesh enclosure are best once they get bigger ❤
Keeping them in plastic/ glass isn't a good idea.
And if you use flea treatment on any pets make sure you thoroughly wash your hands before feeeding/handling. I also rinse their food no matter what as well.
Goodluck on your next batch!
@@jjmarie3472 yeah I did end up changing them up to a mesh pop up net and it seemed to help 😊
@@Jumpingspiderlife Awesome!!
