This is so interesting to listen to. Despite missing its core the theme is still very distinct and you can tell it’s FFX’s instantly. Not only that, it has a new kind of charm to it, a novelty, a refreshing side. And yet with half of its entity stripped, this song still beats many other JRPG’s combat themes. I love it.
The thing that these videos wind up highlighting is just how interesting uematsu's arrangements are - every attempt to strip "main melodies" will be seriously difficult because there's a lot of countermelodies going on which presents a challenge to sort one out as "main" - and all the different melodic lines engage you, asking you to pay attention to a different phrase once the song loops. I think Uematsu does this super well, and it's what I like about Yasutaka Nakata's production, too. Every time you re-listen, you're led to pay attention to a melodic line you hadn't noticed before - either one that's a good candidate for an alternate "main" melody, or one that's tucked under layers or production - or even one that is born from call and response from different instruments with different timbres and pans
I really enjoyed listening to the music this way! The concept of your channel is very interesting, keep up the great work. I think if you get more views and more songs, you can go further! Keep up the good work!
I don't know, I still hear the main melody a little. I am not educated in music at all. Maybe it's hard to digitally remove it? Maybe it's just how the rest of the song is structured around it and you can hear it through remaining parts? Or it could just be I've listened to this theme SO much that my brain is automatically filling in the missing parts because they are engrained in the fibers of my being.
Such an amazing composition and composer
