- The Toyota Supra has been known and a staple in the JDM car community due to its sporty coupe look, and ability to make TONS of power on the stock block. The Mk4 Supra was known for this with its iconic 2JZ GTE motor. Well, the new kid on the block, the BMW developed B58, has certainly been holding its own in the same category.
Our resident Toyota Supra expert Connor is here today to break down the cost of modifying our A90 Supra as well as what it costs to make some big power.

I have a $400 catless DP and $1200 in custom tuning. On E40 my car made 515whp and 551wtq. I slapped a set of Nitto NT555RIIs on it which cost about $900 for the rear. Now it hooks at all rpm and speeds. So that's 515whp, 551wtq, and running the quarter in the high 10s, for roughly $2500 for performance mods. In my opinion, there's probably not another car on the market at the moment that reacts this well to mods for such a little amount of money.
I would say audi rs3 competes, slightly more expensive but you get awd traction and amazing engine note. Both great in my opinion
My tuner is a good friend of mine and my DP plus tune was $800 on 91 map making 440hp 485tq. Went back for more power and switch to an E50 map, found a faulty spark plug and a missing table in the map. Re-installed 91 map and tuned an E50 map. Car makes 540hp and 570tq. I have nitto 555rIIs as well but only on the rears. This setup is awesome and I have only paid about a grand in engine mods. I want to go pure800 but there's so much involved in getting into 650-700hp 700+tq.
Atsv does tune , dp and hpfp over 600 wheel . And the ability to run 9s with a tire .
@@svt89 Very similar to the Supra then in how well it responds to such little in the way of mods. My friend really wants one of those.
What DP are you running? Any other mods to start off with that you’d recommend?
The B58 is such a great engine choice for this car
The B58 is a great successor to the 2JZ. It outperforms the 2JZ in nearly every category. Such a fun car to drive.
DID YOU JUST SAY A 2JZ ISN'T THE BEST MOTOR OF ALL TIME?!!?
YOU'RE GONNA HEAR FROM MY ATTORNEY FOR THAT!
Well except in appearance I think 2JZ looks better but that’s probably because engines In general are covered up nowadays
I still believe toyota could made there own engine honestly the yaris was a prime example there made the most power engine per litre. Yeah the b58 is amazing but I feel like toyota probably let smdown the real toyota fans by not producing there own motor
@@EngineBoiz I feel that the amount of R&D that would go into that is a little much, they were looking to put a worthy inline 6 as the successor rather than what would probably be a trd camry motor or something to that effect, honestly bmw was the best decision they could have made
Ours is actually close to about 620-640 whp :)
I wish I had 800 tho. Lol
Oops! Haha. We'll be sure to let Connor know!
I'm not even a JDM / Import guy but I'm glad more people are coming around to the mkv supra. It's a fantastic car and gets stupid hate.
Anybody that knows Toyota knows that they wouldn't have used BMW's engine if it didn't live up to Toyota standards. This is the same company that'll shut down an assembly line for a warped lugnut.
True, I work for a supplier for toyota they will shut down the line lol
@@fabianhoffman1615 I have never worked with em but I use to deliver there, it's pretty cool/bizarre to watch when it does happen. They'll literally pause everything and gather around the one car the defect is on. Next thing you know they start taking apart pretty much every car they made that day to check over again. Incredible work ethic/quality control.
Toyota actually had quite a few changes made to the B58 for the Supra ... these cars are underrated and they're only going to get more support from the aftermarket ... great vid!
Couldn't agree more! Thanks!
Short, concise, to the point and effective. Video well informative and done right. 😎👍
Thank you! We appreciate the support 🔥
You guys are awesome I bought Whitline adjustable font swaybar and endlinks for my MKV and some SPL parts. Fast shipping and great pricing. Thanks for posting, I'm loving that Rexspeed CF aero kit... Might be my next purchase.
Heck yeah man! Like we stated in the video, the aero kit just looks fantastic with those stock body lines!
Nice job cousin 👍 pretty freakin dope
Oh dang! Didn't realize you guys were super local to me! Hopefully I can learn my car enough to get into the power mods soon!
Love the thought of an adjustable drop spring.
The only thing missing from this build, is Family.

For even > 600whp You still keep the OEM Mahle Pistons and charge air cooler ?
Impressive OEM Parts
Question you said ceramic coating the downpipes help keep the intake temps up ,odd high intakes temps definitely kills hp I was thinking
Ive got a Stage 2 tune (DME by far the best, piggy back is a joke). It got FBO gets me close to 500 whp on gas. Ready to see what the pure 800 turbo does. E85 could destroy all your lines be careful unless you're a seasoned pro.
Love the wheels
Still waiting for one about my Ls1 GTO lol.
You didn't mention an intake or exhaust. What did yall use?
what Weld wheel and tire combo is that?
I'm happy with my Evo 9 build. I paid $21k several years ago and with roughly $13k invested I have done all kind of maintenance over the span of 7+ years and upped the whp over 450whp along with cosmetic upgrades. $6k more and I'll be in the 550-580whp on stock block and under $40k.
Personal preference. The video wasn't talking about an "Evo Build". Next time pay attention youngin 😒😒
@@350z33hr congratulations you stated something obvious and yet failed to see that I did a comparison between two JDM platforms for those who didn't think of an Evo as an option.
When did Jackie make 800? I swore his overkill was in the 650 range? And he’s running a gtx3076….not sure that turbo flows enough for 800
Well it’s already fast , this is how to make it even faster
We like to think of it as "Redefining Fast" 😉
Just wait for the manual, if rumors prove true - interest in the car might just get reinvigorated
I’m hoping for a manual
Boy do i have news for yall 😂
@@supanjibobu6132It's not really news at this point, I mean I've been following this since day one.
@@supanjibobu6132 this aged.. Well.
You’re forgetting a major cost of unlocking the ecu if it’s June 2021 or later
Can you do 2022 Honda Civic si?
Once more parts become available, we got you!
@@maperformance thank you!
900 for a downpipe 🤣🤣🤣
It's a shame all this is irrelevant now due to the locked ECU's if you buy a new Supra. Unless I'm missing something, you can go ahead and add another 5-6K to get it unlocked before you can even start tuning.
Why are we only seeing 600-800 hp range is it because the b58 isn't capable or it's still new that we aren't seeing 1000+ hp like the 2jz
Probably due to the 2jz being over 20 years old, while the B58 hasn't had that same amount of time for R&D!
Plenty of power stock.
There are going to be a ton of Automatic Supras for sale cheap once manual Supra is released.
You underestimate the market. All the Supras currently sold, the buyers know full well it's an automatic. People love the ZF 8speed. The manual could probably take about 20% if it does come out. So no, there are not going to be a bunch of "Automatic Supras for sale cheap"
We hope that the words "cheap" and "Supra" can be used in the same sentence some day!
I doubt it because the ZF is paired so well with the B58 I suspect a manual will give up performance. There are rumors of a manual MKV Supra, but we will see, I do hope they offer it to those that want it but the ZF is no joke.
@@thillyard1 Yeah, also to add I think people keep assuming the automatic is the old traditional slow shifting econoboxes. When in reality, once you drive with one it alters your perception of what automatics can do. I've owned manuals most of my life, and love how fast mine shifts and wouldn't even care to trade for a manual supra.
@@soapa4279 100% agree. The MKV Supra is my first automatic sports car, I’ve probably owned 15 manuals over the years from RX7 to C7 to GT350. I didn’t know if I would l would like the ZF but I love it. I manual/paddle shift in sport mode + about 99% if the time. Car still feels engaging but I’m focusing more of my effort on driving than shifting.
....I paid close to 70k$ for my 2.0 model....a prayer goes out for the rest of my eastern eurobros
dang!
jesus.... Im in the US and i paid less than that for my 3.0 premium
@@ultimatesin5 the 2020 base 3.0 costs about 95kUSD here in the Philippines. I'd rather buy a 2nd hand GTR if the prices keeps increasing 📶
@@yuunatica9136 JHC that is ridiculous i agree with your sentiment
Ouch
or just ride stock
600 plus whp for 11k not bad actually.
Until it runs lean and melts a hole in the piston.
@@foam27 should be tuned... by someone reputable.
Yall still using port injection instead of just upgrading the high pressure fuel pump? Pure laziness
A 2jz
Gg
It makes me so sad that there is no stick shift. Why Toyota, Why
cuz they know rich boys will buy the first generation no matter what, then they later release the manual to get them to buy again. like how apple makes the iphone just a little better year after year.
Tune it and say goodbye to your warranty if you have an engine failure!
B58s are well proven with making power reliably, but the loss of warranty is the price you pay to be faster!
@@maperformance Or you can just buy a faster stock car in the first place and maintain the warranty!
@@dontcare563 Where's the fun in that :). You also are talking about speding a lot of $$ to get reliable 600-800whp on another stock car.
@@thillyard1 Your right, it's a lot more fun spending thousands for the engine mods and pay the $10K-$15K more to rebuild/replace the blown engine! What was I thinking!
@@dontcare563 I’m curious what $70-75K stock new car can put down 600-700whp legitimately. Not crank, wheel.
80k and at that point buy a porsche
What Porsche can you get for 80K out the door? 718? That thing only has 394HP
@@Mike604 but it's way lighter then the bmw mk5. It all comes down to weight.
80k into your Supra and you will blow the doors off any equivalently-priced Porsche, which is the goal here.
$50k for a stock Miata??!! We're threw as a species....
Call me a Luddite, but I'll stick with the 1G Neon, a built big turbo SRT-4 swap, and keep the left over $38k for hook-ears and be-low...
miata?!?!?!
The poor spelling and odd grammar of this comment makes it hard to understand if it's a troll post.
@@maperformance check out the Miata RF, BRZ, 400z, Alpha 4c, "Supra" ECT... Side by side. Sure, they may have not all that different body plastics, not too dissimilar suspension, different power plant layout's, badge's ECT... And calling them a (Insert brand name here). But there is no denying there's a eerie resemblance. Almost like all manufacturers are using the exact same, *slightly* modified unibody. Maybe my expectations are too high?
@@soapa4279 uh oh.. someone may have found a grammatical or spelling error in a Yutoobe comment...? Now how about you find some critical thinking skills and priorities?
@@yubentrolled7097 That's golden, you talking about critical thinking skills when you're trying to downplay a Supra to being the same as a miata, and then proceed to hype up a Neon SRT-4 from the early 2000s. lmao.
Just get a used plaid with a remainder of an 8-year warranty and slaughter everything and enjoy 80% cheaper fuel and awd.
Used Plaids r like 135k 🤦🏽♂️
Plaids are easily $100k+ used, heavy as crap, overheat after just a couple laps on track day.
The plaid will beat this in a straight line sure but the supra will eat it alive in the corners.
Tesla is gay brother. We like real cars.
You would also enjoy having to go home to charge after 3 hot laps around the track.
