I am still skeptical. Dr Nathan Bryan (nitric oxide scientist) says that test strip isn't always accurate and you do need a test that actually measures it in your arm, with a machine. Forgot what it's called... it's called an Endopat. Also, he says it takes 4 days for the mouth to repopulate after stopping long term mouthwash use. Yet, I've heard from another dentist, Dr. Burhenne who is against mouthwash too, say whatever mouthwash kills in free floating bacteria is useless because they can repopulate again in 30 minutes.
Thank you for the video though.
I am in full support of xylitol and gum massage and closys seems milder than listerine.
Edit: If water is same as mouthwash, then why bother buying extra mouthwashes in first place? i.e. could use plain water then or even bit of salt to enhance slightly.

    • @ReligionAndMaterialismDebunked
      @ReligionAndMaterialismDebunked 4 месяца назад

First. Yes, I've seen people challenging mouthwashes, and one dentist using the original Listerine for the first time, hating the taste, and saying the strip says it ruined here nitric oxide levels.

    • @dr.elliephillips
      @dr.elliephillips  4 месяца назад +1

@@ReligionAndMaterialismDebunked You will "ruin" nitric oxide levels with a glass of water if you test immediately after drinking the water.
You need to allow an hour after any eating or drinking of anything - otherwise you will get a false result.
Chlorhexidine is the only mouthrinse than has the antiseptic power to damage the oral biofilm.
As mentioned - it is easy to get salivary testing confused if you miss this important point:
80% of the mouth bacteria are woven into an oral biofilm
20% are planktonic and are easily swallowed, washed away and float about the mouth.
The bacteria in the biofilm behave as a community.
Healthy biofilm is very resilient. 40% of the composition of an adult biofilm develops before the age of 4 and remains throughout life.

I was wondering about this very thing because many claim mouthwash destroys the bad bacteria And also the good bacteria that is responsible for the nitrate >nitric oxide pathway

I love your protocol. Just did it 2 weeks when I went for my 6 month cleaning and my teeth had lost all the terrible sensitivity I had from receded gums and hygienist remarked on how much less plaque I had than usual (and I'm a diligent brush and floss person). Excited to see what happens at my next dental check up. By the way, just wanted to comment that from what I've gleaned from her videos (50 years in dentistry), I'm guessing Dr Ellie is about my age (possibly a few years younger) but she just radiates a healthy energy and enthusiasm which shows a healthy mouth is the key to overall health. Hi Dr. Phillips. First thank you for showing me (through RUclips videos) just how to take care of my teeth. I have been using your systems and recommended products for 6 months now and the results have been extraordinary. My teeth had been getting a translucent quality (thinning) and easily stained even with one cup of coffee HOWEVER, the one change I did have to make was to drop the recommended Listerine out of the process. After much testing with and without the Listerine, the Listerine was leaving my gums somewhat red and definitely sensitive. I am more than willing to concede that this may be something unique to the bacteria in my mouth but the Listerine was definetely causing problems. I knew this (based on experience) prior to using your system but thought maybe the reaction would be different in tandem with your system (turns out Listerine is a problem for my gums no matter how its used). With the exception of the Listerine recommendation, your system has given me stellar results for my gums to the point that my wife has on multiple occasions remarked just how good my teeth look now compared to what they had been! Thanks again!

So I went to a new dental hygiene spa today. What a wonderful experience ! I have been doing the full mouth care for about a month….best I can with the available products. (Canada) . The first thing offered in the waiting room was listerine cool mint zero from a big dispenser bottle. The last thing given leaving was a xylitol sample. ! She was impressed that I was already a xylitol user. I chuckled at the big pump bottle of mouth wash , i put mine in a pump bottle too, and I can’t believe how many of my friends criticize it and tell me to stop using it! The hygienist claims they promote the cool mint zero , . Flossing was still recommended. My gums are clean and in good health but lots of staining and some plaque on teeth. Now I am cleaned up and ready to continue the program with a fresh mouth. It has been over 4 years since I seen a dentist or hygienist. Thank you.

I have to say, Dr. Ellie, you're a mind-reader :) I was just thinking about this question this morning. I appreciate your mentioning the test strips. I've been following your protocol for a while, but I was starting to get concerned about whether the original formula Listerine might be killing off the beneficial bacteria needed to produce nitric oxide; it's good to know that from your perspective this is a non-issue.
Something funny: After I'd been following your protocol for a couple of months, I went into the dentist for a checkup. She did the usual exam and took a little sample looking for Streptococcus mutans and couldn't find any; all she saw were the healthy bacteria. She gushed about how better my teeth and gums were looking, and added, "Wow, your gums look so healthy. I can see you've been flossing! I wish every patient flossed twice a day like you." I told her tthat I hadn't been flossing for a couple of months; she was dumbfounded and said, "Oh, but you have to floss." It's funny how stuck people in the profession get on some old ideas.
I'm curious what you think about the oral probiotic chewable supplements some people use. Do you look at them as good? Bad? Harmless but irrelevant?

    • @dr.elliephillips
      @dr.elliephillips  Год назад +6

I cannot believe any scientist would use the term "mouthwash" without defining which liquid he or she is talking about.
People love to hate Listerine - so usually Listerine is targeted - and the myth about Listerine exploded years ago.
Listerine's active ingredients are three essential oils (eucalyptus, menthol, and thymol).
Recently -with more interest in NO - this crazy nonsense got to the point where I decided I had to make this video.
NO production is vital for health - and mouth health is key.
I hope you may consider my Complete Mouth Care System - DrEllie.com for more information about my strategy for mouth health :)

    • @SunrayStar
      @SunrayStar 3 месяца назад +1

If by "rinse" you mean that you place 1 gram (about 1/4 teaspoon) of crystals in your mouth and swish around for a couple of minutes (2-5), then yes you can. I only mention that to confirm that you aren't mixing the xylitol into water first to make a rinse, because mixing xylitol into foods or drinks will be way less effective for oral health and won't work too well. You can either spit it out or swallow it when you're done, and swallowing isn't necessary for improving your oral health, but your gut microbiome won't get the benefit of it if you spit it out. Xylitol serves as a prebiotic for your beneficial gut bacteria, but it has to be swallowed to reach them.

Xylitol helps to promote butyrate in the digestive tract - which is foundational for good digestive health.
In Europe xylitol is consumed to prevent osteoporosis - and it has been used as a diabetic baking sugar for over 150 years.
There are books with recipes for the use of xylitol in baking and cooking - but this is not how I recommend xylitol for oral health - so generally I don't talk about it.

The oxygen boosting wash at the start of your system and then the xylitol during the day will boost nitric oxide. Just using alcohol-based mouth washes can hurt nitric oxide without the system, tho. They're not nuts (the ones alerting ppl re: importance of nitric oxide generation in the mouth). They care, ... and I'm glad for it. And, now I know your system, as well, which I am also very glad about!

Yes.... though are you sure closys boosts nitric oxide? or simply not affect it either way? I think closys may be much better than listerine, the active ingredient, chlorine dioxide, works to kill anaerobic (without oxygen) bacteria that are bad. Whilst good bacteria can survive the Cloysys, switching from anaerobic to aerobic.

Transparency is a sign that you have lost minerals from your front teeth.
Healthy mouth saliva contains the minerals that teeth need.
Please do not get sucked into the "nano-hydroxyapatite" marketing lies - because this creates a fake outer "shell" over your teeth - that can oppose the re-mineralization that occurs in the natural way.
Better to focus on these things:
Be sure not to eat or drink between meals.
Ensure your front teeth are "coated" with saliva often during this period of fasting between meals.
Saliva mineral concentration varies with a Circadian (24 hour) Rhythm - and the concentration of minerals is highest during the afternoon hours and lowest during the night and when we lie down to sleep. Ensure you do not drink anything after using my system of care before sleeping at night.
What we eat affects the concentration of minerals in our saliva.
Salad and leaf veggies are very good sources of minerals if you can include some at most meals.
Ideally always have a good lunch with leafy green veggies or salad greens ( lettuce , celery, sprouts, mushrooms, onions, garlic, beets etc) .
You don' need to eat a lot for this to work - but ensure you have SOME every day - and this will elevate the minerals in saliva during the afternoon.
End your meal with some xylitol /Zellies and then fast after lunch till dinner - ensuring saliva coats your front teeth (you may want to remember to lick your front teeth every half hour - coating them with your saliva) . This may be a habit you do for a month or two - until the problem has been solved.

I also have a chapter in my book Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye.
My advice is to try this out for yourself. Become empowered.
Become your own advocate - and don't listen to other who simply listen to each other!
Women have far more problems with their teeth than men - and much of this current info comes from men who have never experienced hormonal mouth problems - that do not respond to "brush and floss" advice.
I am sick and tired of the ":mouthwash" stupidity.
Every liquid you drink - washes your mouth - but you simply swallow it.
Yes, this will change your NO levels for a while - but this does not damage your mouth microbiome.
40% of an adult microbiome develops IN CHILDHOOD - so how could such a thing damage it?
In many cases it survives constant dental cleanings every 6 months - which I view as FAR more damaging!

I just started your system yesterday after visiting my Dentist and having my teeth cleaned but I was wondering if your system would remove plaque without getting a cleaning?

    • @dr.elliephillips
      @dr.elliephillips  Год назад +1

If you use this system x2 daily and always last thing at night...combined with the xylitol/zellies after meals....and don't eat or drink between meals.....yes.
If you forget the xylitol - or only use the system once a day - I am not sure it will work effectively enough for that.
Yes, when used routinely, my system is able to dissolve sub-gingival calculus.
The gum massage I suggest, using the correct kind of brush, will heal up pockets.
The usual time needed ( for a systemically healthy person who is eating a healthy diet, has healthy digestion and non smokers etc) is 12 weeks to heal.
For anyone who has diabetes, chronic health issues and is a smoker etc - this can still work but the time for healing may be protracted and take up to two years.
This is why I encourage most people to use my system 3-6 months BEFORE having a periodontal cleaning.
We have seen time and time again that individuals are able to severely reduce the amount of pain and trauma from these cleanings- and possibly (in many cases) get their money back as they avoid the need for cleanings altogether!
If you can tolerate the original flavor Listerine (in place of the Cool Mint) it appears to be even more effective for this purpose.
Have you been to my oral health bootcamp at DrEllie.com to ensure you know how to do the gum massage?

@dr.elliephillips Hello Dr Phillips. I'm certain you've addressed this question previously, but I've recently embarked on your home care system. I'm keen to understand the advantages and potential drawbacks of incorporating xylitol mouthwash in the home care routine?? My second inquiry pertains specifically to males. In the event that a male is grappling with erectile dysfunction (ED), does the use of mouthwash exacerbate this condition by further diminishing nitric oxide levels, especially when coupled with the presence of periodontal disease? Thank you again for your help and can't wait to report back good results to you

    • @dr.elliephillips
      @dr.elliephillips  Год назад +1

I believe poor oral health has tremendous systemic health implications and that periodontal disease disarms our systemic health, with many problematic influences.
I suggest you begin with my Complete Mouth Care System for at least 8 weeks - taking care to brush with the correct brushes, allow them to dry safely between uses (away from any toilet area in the bathroom) and be careful to end every meal with some Zellies mints - (then do not eat or drink anything for at least 1-2 hours).
The goal is to allow healthy bacteria to populate your mouth, while they are also discouraging periodontal pathogens.
Don't use a water flosser or floss - except to remove bits of stuck food - the act of flossing can push bacteria into your blood.
If you need to floss - do this at the toothpaste stage of the system.
Ensure you have the exact products for the system as small variations will change the outcome.
If you haven't got a booklet to follow - there is a free booklet available on my website at D.Ellit.com and also an oral health bootcamp for more details about how to use the system.
There is no xylitol "mouthwash" in my system.
There is the use of a xylitol mint at the end of meals - to stimulate a flow of saliva - as saliva has many immune cells and other "ingredients" that help fight this disease naturally.
As mentioned. xylitol will also feed the good mouth bacteria - if you stop eating and drinking between meals.
I believe that in 6 weeks your mouth will notice a difference.
You may want to do some NO testing for yourself (test kits are available on the shopping cart at my website - DrEllie.com)
Berkeley life do sell NO supplements - but I recommend you begin by having more salads and incorporate a few organic beets in your salad each day.
Maybe consider how improved oral health will assist your body - and my system of care will definitely decrease pathogens and increase healthy bacteria in your mouth - within 8-12 weeks.
When you test to see your NO levels - always wait before doing this test - at least an hour after cleaning your teeth or having a meal.

I'm going to go with someone more than twice his age and experience who has great teeth though because I was overly confident at his age that non-fluoride toothpaste and stopping mouthwash was the way to go... and that's when I started getting loads of cavities despite brushing, rigorous flossing and using electric toothbrush. Your dentist is correct as both Listerine and ACT are, in fact, acidic.
But the irony is that acidity is good in the presence of 0.05% sodium fluoride as it enhances the mineralization process. This is one of the attributes that occurs when we use the Listerine prior to the use of ACT.

What I would find interesting, is what is the rate in time (mins) that the microbiome in the mouth returns to "normal" after the water mouthwash vs Listerine mouthwash. Similar to monitoring your blood glucose after eating a steak vs a bake potato. 🤔

Listerine zero alcohol is the wrong product. The Listerine she recommends that will work is the original Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash (with alcohol in it) in either Original or Cool Mint flavor. Ultradex is an acceptable substitute for Closys if you cannot find Closys, per Dr. Ellie.

Thank you so much for this video. But I’m a little concerned because about 4:00 you talk about mouth rinses and then you compare Avion water with a mouth rinse/wash? As you say, not all mouthwashes / rinse are created equal. The ones that say they kill 99.9% of the germs are the ones you those internet peeps say you need to avoid. Other mouth rinses / washes may be perfectly fine.
Also, I drink a lot of distilled water all day long and thankfully I’m using a straw so I’m really not rinsing my mouth but I may have to start drinking all my water in different doses instead of sipping it all day long. That could be a disaster. Thank you again for the video.

You cannot kill the bacteria in oral biofilm.
Its built /formed to be resilient - and over a third of bacteria in oral biofilm were first incorporated during childhood.
It's impossible to wipe out the biofilm bacteria - that's the confusion.
Prescription Chlorhexidine is the ONLY rinse when used regularly that may damage it.
The bacteria floating in saliva (planktonic) are "washed" away by any liquid - every time you drink or rinse....even water
The only difference, when you drink water is you will swallow them.
      This NO myth is ridiculous.
I've been rinsing with this system for over 45++ years and I have amazing NO levels.
Test your own. I sell NO testing kits on my website if you want one....drElile.com

It takes about an hour to 90 minutes...
This is why mouth resting for 1-2 hours between meals -(when you do not eat or drink) is so important for health.

@@lpg12338 The other test you can do is a comprehensive bacterial test to see the full range of bacteria in your saliva.
      Bristle offers such a test.
The results show the overall picture of bacteria floating in our mouth - but they also specifically measure plaque/decay forming ones and also nitric oxide forming bacteria.
I have done this test and shown my collection of "denitrifying' bacteria (which live on the back of your tongue) is optimal despite being 75.
I believe that this is an important conversation - and many foods FEED denitrifying bacteria ( salads, celery, beets etc)
We also produce a lot of nitric oxide in our nose and it is stored in our sinuses.
I believe chronic nasal infection and our methods for treating allergies and sinus by shrinking the tissues is wrong and detrimental to nitric oxide levels...
Yes, a lot to process :)

Is it ok to get a dental cleaning before starting your protocol, because i haven't had a cleaning in years and while i dont think my teeth are too bad, there is some plaque on my lower front teeth, so will the protocol get rid of that or should i get the cleaning?

    • @dr.elliephillips

I’d suggest that you use my protocol for at least 8 to 12 weeks before you have a dental appointment.
For a free downloadable booklets in more information, you can go to my website DrEllie.com
It is far better to go to your dentist with an ultimately healthy mouth and ask them if you NEED a dental cleaning.

Hi, Dr. Phillips. I was wondering if you could comment on two techniques featured on RUclips for restoring receding gums. One is the Laser Cleaning technique which apparently gets rid of plaque and bacteria below the gumline and helps gums regrow and reattach to the tooth and the second surgical technique is discussed by Dr. Joseph Nemeth and called the "Pinhole Technique". Thanks!
