This game's opening FMV is the epitome of the meme with a crackhead Dave Chappelle saying "y'all got anymore of them pixels" I have never seen more compression artifacts. The Shrek 2/Shark Tale GBA video had better quality... Video Now had a sharper image. I love you had a reference to Omishi Magical Theater: Risky Safety. Anyways i'll stop before this gets comment even more 2000s.
Long tangent here: I’ve gotten about halfway through this video now and I wrote this all before watching but I really feel the need to get this off my chest even if no one else sees this. I really loved the anime adaptation of this game, I grew up on it actually. I heard people saying the video game was better so I went and watched an entire playthrough on it on RUclips and God were they wrong. The story and characters train wrecks. *Especially Morte*. If I can just absolutely fly off the handle here in a RUclips comments section for a moment: I have absolutely no idea what anyone sees in this woman, she’s an unredeemable and manipulative murderer. Granted the anime adaptation of her was no saint either but she never did anything particularly villainous, it was clear she was just lashing out at a world that hurt her. Video Game Morte couldn’t be any more different in this way. Sure both Mortes act similarly but it’s like video game Morte is wearing the anime Morte like a skinsuit. Same could be said for Kyrie too. They took all his agency and turned him into a mindless simp in the video games The Kyrie resurrection scene and the Labyrinth of Memories are probably the worst scenes in the game for me. Morte beating Kyrie after bringing him back and playing it off for laughs just…rubs me the wrong way. Obviously Morte isn’t one to be genuine with herself but they absolutely went overboard with this scene and the fact that everyone except Naja (god bless the only good thing in the video game) is like “lmao that’s Morte for you. What did you expect a hug?” I just vile?!? I might be going overboard but the group just normalizes abuse?! Imagine if the genders were swapped-wait no I’ve seen enough plot synopsises of smutty romance to know that’s actually hot now. Still this scene is what made me realize that the video game was a dumpster fire, especially in comparison to the anime. Anime Morte would absolutely never do anything like this to Kyrie. The labyrinth of memories scene is even worse in my opinion. When we finally get to Morte, whom is saved for the very last, it’s revealed that she has no traumatic backstory. However the game furthers this by saying that not only has she never encountered no tragedy in her life but it is also explicitly stated that Morte has no regrets either. At first it comes across as a poorly crafted attempt to prop up Morte and make her seem cooler than she already is but the implications of this are actually absurd. So VG Morte just wants to destroy the world for what? Shits and giggles? She woke up and chose violence? VG Morte has absolutely no regrets, which means she never accidentally hurt the wrong person or bore witness to an injustice she couldn’t help. This means that she doesn’t even slightly feel bad for beating Kyrie senseless when he was brought back. So then why is she even bothering to end the world?! She briefly mentions how “oH wEll the inJustice” YEAH BITCH IT MUST BOTHER YOU A WHOLE LOT WHEN YOU SLEEP LIKE A BABY AT NIGHT. I don’t think a Freudian excuse wouldn’t forgiven anything for me but it certainly would’ve given the audience something anything to latch onto and at least added some amount of depth to her character. In contrast anime Morte is very defined by her backstory. It’s nothing groundbreaking, she lost her parents to feral/beastfolk cruelty and her younger brother died in a rebellion against them, but it gives you at least an insight into her nihilism and it’s something that’s relatively built up well in the anime. I’m also gonna rant about the ending because it’s just awful. Essentially Morte gets exactly what she wants via Kyrie and her literally killing God and recreating a “better” world. But as idealistic as this ending is it just doesn’t feel right. What’s the lesson to be learned here? That if you’re unhappy with the way the world is you shouldn’t try to change it and instead should just give up on it because it’s already too forgone. Yes the world Kyrie and Morte lived in was a flawed one but what world isn’t? There will always be pain and injustice in some form as long as any sort of sentence exists. But that’s no reason to give up on the world or anything else. That’s what change is for. Which is exactly the moral the anime settles on as well. Instead of opting to destroy the world, anime Morte, in a cheesy twist realizes that the true perfect world was the friends she made along the way and she finally gives up on her goal of world destruction, realizing that it wouldn’t change anything in the end. I can’t help but imagine that in the new world VG Kyrie and VG Morte create, someone almost immediately destroys the world they created, thus creating a cycle. (especially considering the psychopath Morte is made out to be). Admittedly the anime isn’t the definitive peak of fiction either. It was very clearly made to promote the video game and a lot of it’s characters and plots are cookie cutter and the animation budget fades in and out of existence. But for all its flaws, it’s still a franchise I hold rather dearly and I think of it as a diamond in the rough and I strongly disagree with the people hail the video game as the superior adaptation when I believe it to have many shortcomings in comparison to the anime. So in conclusion video game Morte can suck an egg. Thanks for reading this stroke personified into a RUclips comment I needed to get this out of my system. you can't just put the Chrono Cross opening over Xenogears animation man!! that's too peak! the world is not ready for that!!! (just so you know that by doing that you make me think this is either a new favourite for me or an incredible disappointment lol) edit: Ok yeah I think I should play this for myself before watching this video, it looks really cool.
After just recently playing and enjoying chrono cross it sucks to hear that there writing didn't really improve because the was one of the weakest parts of the game

I really love this game and the battle system, i don't understand why but the game make me feel playing to Grandia/Xenogears mix.
