  • With its length of 361 meters, width of 66 meters and height of 72 meters, the Symphony of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world. The 228,081 ton giant has space for more than 6,680 passengers who can enjoy themselves on the longest slide at sea or in one of two surf pools, among other things. The report accompanies the luxury liner on its maiden voyage.

    Imagine having to evacuate this ship in an emergency

    • @jereking254
      @jereking254 8 месяцев назад +7

      Well taken care of. The evacuation plan is amazing - 6,300 people can be evacuated in an emergency.

    • @felipecardoza9967
      @felipecardoza9967 8 месяцев назад +7

      @jereking254 it's good that a plan exists and is practiced regularly but the video didn't say if the ship has a system to counteract listing if the hull should be breached. Listing beyond a certain amount of degrees will make loading rescue boats on the lower side difficult and prevent rescue boats from being lowered safely on the high side so the ship would need some kind of system to pump seawater into tanks on the high side to prevent this issue.
      The other issue is panic, which is hard to predict and control. More people are lost because of panic, and having 6,000 guests increases the chances that some will. Plus, this ship is ENORMOUS. A thorough search of the entire ship would be daunting. Hopefully the plan has a method to achieve this quickly.

    • @fidel6573
      @fidel6573 8 месяцев назад +2

      It is way easier than it sounds. All the crew members have their duties in case of an emergency, and they have drills on every cruise to remind them what to do in an emergency. Everyone onboard is assigned to a lifeboat or raft and all you have to do is show up to your station and you're safe.
      Also, the ship has mechanisms that help and give enough time for evacuation. For example, there are water tight doors where when flooding happens, two floors would be submerged, and the ship would still remain afloat.

    a lot of cruise ships that are tied up to cities of Alaska ports often dump gray waters into the sea undetected and health authorities found popular beaches in the summer contaminated and often closed to swimmers and beachgoers. and one city reports the beach was closed for two years, newspapers report. Commercial fisherman and sports fisherman also had a poor run that summer.

      As an old rag sailor I wouldn't go near that monstrosity. The ocean isn't a peaceful place. If it gets nasty, (been there: done that) your big playground will be covered with vomit from the seasick passengers, and if there is a real emergency you have thousands of passengers who don't have a clue. It's another TITANIC looking for a place to happen.

    I wonder when they will transition to cruise ships that have near-zero carbon ocean operations? Massive containerships are starting the transition using green methanol (because big engines for it are readily available), and other possible fuels include ammonia made via hydrogen electrolysis, or even using hydrogen directly. Maersk received its first green methanol ship this year, it has 25 bigger ones on order for delivery over the next two years, and has secured suppliers for green methanol (arguably the hardest part of this transition). They expect 25% of their ocean operations to be on green methanol by 2030, and other shipping lines are also ordering ships designed for methanol or other near-zero carbon fuels.
    It is helpful that the drive train to the propellers (screws?) is already 29:11 electric motors. Perhaps there is also some room for fuel-cell technology (no more combustion), at least for certain auxiliary power requirements.

When you consider that this is a vessel that carries millions in cargo and priceless with passengers... You would ask your self, in the event something like that happens and you don't have a compass or binoculars that is chump change in cost, it just make sense to have it.
