The deputy mayor was a true hero that night. He put his own life at risk to save the lives of people he didn't even know. This was shortly after the incident all over the news that he had refused the help of the Italian Coast Guard when called back. He was downright lying when he said "it is just a black out", he KNEW that the ship was doomed. And he was again when called by the CG commander/harbour master from Livorno, that he was heading back to the ship "organizing the rescue" and instead heading for land to save his own little dick. He should spend the rest of his life in jail, and I hope he doesn't even get to command a rubber dingy when ever he is finally going to be released...

So sad. What an incredible feat of engineering to move the massive ship though. What an amazing man that mayor was. Yes. No reason anyone should've died in this horrific accident. As a 23 year merchant mariner myself, how the capt handled this is disgraceful. He clearly knew what was going in from the engineers telling him. His pride cost 35 lives.
He lied because for years he had been told what a fantastic person he was. He was in charge, and thus considered always right. When it was clear he was wrong and going to lose his career, he was unwilling to accept that reality. The dead people paid for his cowardice with their lives.
I remember that the media claimed that the one thing the "captain" did right, after the incident, was beach the ship, so that it wouldn't sink entirely. Turns out he didn't even get THAT right! It was pure dumb luck. What an idiot and coward!
All I can say is that I am in awe of the engineer, Nick Sloane, for what he was able to accomplish. As intense as this story was, Mr. Sloane gave immense relief and closure for the horrific ordeal. BRAVO! - Mr. Sloane is not only an absolute genius, but he's a man of great determination and leadership upon bringing resolve to the impossible.
The captain made a serious error in navigation, lied to the coastguard, delayed the rescue process, then fled the ship when passengers still needed assistance.
Not just an error - it said that he intentionally deviated the ship from it's planned course. He did this simply to make a show for the people on the island (and probably to impress the staff on the ship)... except it failed and he killed 32 people.
Okay. So some info which was missed out in this documentary. 1- The fly-by salute was very commonplace, and had been done several times before. In fact, there was a previous captain on the island, who came up with it, and who they were actively communicating with to decide upon safe distances, etc. So in theory, it was fairly safe. 2- Pretty much the whole bridge was at fault. They were heading way too fast, weren't bothering to relay coordinates (so basically had no idea where they were), and actually had guests. The captain's mistress was on deck apparently. They also broke out in an argument, and overall weren't behaving very professionally prior to the accident. 3- The helmsman: he was Indonesian, and didn't speak English or Italian (or at least very poorly). This was more or less his first time at the helm of a ship, and his previous profession was a painter. So not only did he fail to understand many of the commands given, simply because of the language barrier, but he didn't even have the experience to know what to do. Several simulations have proven that they would have missed the rocks, or at least had a survivable collision, were it not for the communication difficulties. Yes, he was hired to cut costs. Whilst he was found guilty, he fled to Indonesia and never actually carried out his sentence.
Incroyable !
Airliners can’t hover, but I understand what you mean. It would be like a pair of airline pilots deciding to dive and do a “low pass” over a bunch of aviation staff.
Your comment ironically relates to a related tragedy, referred to as the "Quiberon Bay mid-air collision". This happened after a commercial pilot deviated from his flight plan to give his passengers a view of a famous ocean liner, the SS Norway (previously the SS France, at the time the largest ship ever built in France). He began descending and turning. Meanwhile, a private aircraft took off from a nearby field and also decided to take a look at the nearby ocean liner. Their paths met, unfortunately.
Great work by this entire team for the mammoth, almost impossible, task of salvaging the ship. I'm particularly proud of my country man from South Africa!
I chuckled at first when i recognized his accent then beamed with pride and wasn't surprised at all when i heard one of our local geniuses solved the problem! Proudly South African all the way. Also awesome documentary!
That so-called captain should have been given 32 years; 16 was a slap on the wrist. Regardless of what he does for the remainder of his life, he shall NEVER forget the harm he's done. At least the captain of the Titanic, went down with his vessel. RIP to the 32.
I don't expect a captain to sacrifice himself bc of a accidental tragedy. However, I do expect him to help everyone off board his ship and THEN he can flee!!
That captain no doubt believes it was not all his fault, that there were circumstances, that he was made a scapegoat, that it was too harsh of a punishment, that there was nothing more he could have done, that it could have happened to anyone, etc, etc. Shit like that ALWAYS find ways to blame anything but themselves. He isn;t losing any sleep over the victims, I can guarantee you that much.

I don’t understand why he didn’t order immediate abandon ship as soon as it became clear that the damage was fatal to the ship. Get everyone out into life rafts, tell them about the island. Call the Coastguard. Get on the radio and beg any little boat captain to come out and help. I’m not even a freaking captain. I’ve been on a cruise ship (smaller river cruise twice) and any other boats maybe even twice more-and I knew better!

Excellent documentary. What about the rumor that the captain's girlfriend was on the bridge and the captain wanted to impress her by passing close to the island?
That rumor was never confirmed and moreover, doing “sail bys” was pretty a common practice. Captain just fucked up because he turned slightly to avoid one rock, while being totally oblivious to the second rock until it was too late.

I genuinely don’t understand him. The freaking ship itself very, very clearly told him and the crew “I’m fatally wounded. I’m going to sink and there’s nothing that can be done to stop it.” Within minutes of taking that mighty gouge. He had ample opportunity and plenty of time to order an immediate evacuation using the life rafts and call the coastguard to immediately assist. Heck he probably could have gotten on the local radio and pleaded for anyone with a boat to come and help. I don’t understand why he not only delayed but actually lied to the coastguard after relatives of the passengers contacted them. This didn’t have to be a tragedy. Even if he’d done the bare minimum of immediately calling the coastguard and ordering an evacuation as soon as he understood the ship was a goner before bailing, everyone would have very likely survived.
April 12,1912: Titanic hits an iceberg in the middle of the frigid Atlantic. Engineers fight to the bitter end to keep the lights on as water crashes through the hull. Only Woman and children are loaded into lifeboats in an orderly manner. The men put on a brave face knowing that death is but a few minutes away. The band plays on as the ship disappears beneath the waves. January 12, 2012: The Concordia hits a rock a mile from shore, everyone panics, and the captain bails.
Not exactly … one thing I’ve noticed from the 1912 Titanic to the 2012 Concordia and many shipwrecks in between is that we still haven’t figured out how to properly and orderly launch a lifeboat…. 😵💫😖

That captain should have been jailed on the coast and forced to watch every single moment of recovery. How could such an unethical coward have slipped through years of being captain? People had to have seen signs. I haven't seen the ending yet, but I definitely think something is buried here. Like residential school abuse. These people are known as risky by those working with them. 16 years in prison. I really hope this leads to systemic investigations and changes so no other captain will take his boat on a joy ride while drunk. That wasn’t mentioned, but I explained why he ducked of sight for fear of a sobriety check. I hope maritime law prevents him from commanding anything other than a kayak, with safety bumpers surrounding his new assignment. A LOT more details could have been summarized at the doc's conclusion.
Excellent documentary. I’m amazed by how steady the passengers are in the interviews. I’d be traumatized for life. Are my eyes playing tricks on me 18:15 was that a family of mice running through the dining room?
No, they were small white porcelain plates sliding across the carpeted floor, as the ship was listing. You can hear other plates falling and smashing in the background.

Very fortunate tho that it didnt happen in the middle of the ocean, or even just a short distance from where it was. Would have been so much worse......
When you deliberately lie about the situation and then leave without ensuring the passengers were vacated safely, that's premeditated. He knew the severity and he was responsible for those lives yet he chose to leave them to die. The value of life means nothing to him, he only asked "how many?". That's more than manslaughter. Disgusting that he got away with mass murder.
L hypothermie ceux qui ne savent pas nager ceux qui ont été heurtés par les canots et l obscurité totale et de plus pas de coordination de sauvetage cela aurait pu être pire
Interior passengers and others below decks were no doubt surprised in pitch blackness when it became increasingly hard to walk or even stand when the ship began listing. They may have headed the wrong way and then been trapped by the water rushing in. Many people's first reaction may have been to try to get to their cabins which, if on the starboard side, would have been a death sentence. Had they known how close the shore was they could have gone up to the top deck, worked their way starboard, and swam 20 meters to shore. They were so close the stacks were almost overhanging the land. There was precious little communication. People were trying to escape down the port side which was too high up also.
If the wind had been blowing the other way that niight we might have had a death toll higher than the titanic. I think its a miracle that so few were lost, no thanks to the captain.

@@Nicole-vh8xf fear Allah unseen

@@Nicole-vh8xf very true. Bad decisions all around. Pilots aren't allowed to fly off their authorized course on a whim, why are ship captains?

When you deliberately lie about the situation and then leave without ensuring the passengers were vacated safely, that's premeditated.
I wonder if the audio was somehow edited after upload because half the comments say the music is too loud but I can barely hear it.
If the wind had been blowing the other way that niight we might have had a death toll higher than the titanic. I think its a miracle that so few were lost, no thanks to the captain.
