      You followed the system, so you didn't steal. Don't feel bad about it at all.
      And, don't give them extra money. You paid for your items honestly. If they charged you less, that not your fault, and you get to keep the money and items.
      I think you made a big mistake giving the store additional money.

At that time, I seriously think someone was manually reviewing the footage to figure out what I grabbed. If it is computer vision and other technologies, it should not take that long to process.

    Humans are out of control. I have had a similar experience with the local Tide Cleaners wash and fold service. Sometimes they bring back all my clothes and sometimes they don't. One month they totally did not charge me for laundry. At all. I had to call them and paid the bill. If you have 2 bags of laundry, and one is not ready, they will deliver one and not charge you. When the second one is ready, it just shows up with no bill or explanation as to its whereabouts. I could go on but the point is the people who should be making the system work are incapable of understanding what is going on so they donot do anything. I'm surprised they are still in business.

  • @cloverlief

    In reality this happens when a store is new, and it is written in for the most part. This is why they typically don't have a case to report it.
    All of the data and descrepancies (hence the extra staff to scan and update inventory) are reviewed by a team who looks for these tech errors. From there it improves drastically and rapidly as they update the system, cameras, and software.
    These errors are considered the cost of deleveopment.
    I use an Amazon Fresh 1-2 times a week near me for most of my grocery shopping.
    During the 1st month it did make errors, always in my favor (almost like if in doubt they just mark it off).
    For the last 10 months it has been spot on accurate to a T regardless of which family member goes in or which kids I take with me.
    When new the system is in learning/debugging phase.
    After a bit it's fine tuned. Now the only mistake it makes is product variance (eg got a chocolate donut, and it thought I got sprinkles).

  • @Spacefish007
    @Spacefish007 2 года назад

    The camera system has to track your movement all the time, maybe due to your long stay, it lost you somewhere in the middle, that´s why it can´t assign the items you took to you, as you are an "unknown person" for what the system knows, at it can´t trace back your path too the scan during entering the store.
    Just my poor idea of how the system works: All the cameras know their location in space, they all run a neural network which detects people / persons. The info where a person is seen is relayed to a central programm/service, having all the infos, you can track the movement of persons over time by just doing nearest neighbor between frames + a majority vote between camera tracking info. Once you enter the shop, you are "identified" by your scan of the app / credit card, then your path is followed, if an item removal from a shelf is detected (scale underneath the shelf most of the time) that item is put on the receipt of the person standing next to that shelf.
    If your "path" is lost during your shopping tour, maybe because you left the cameras field of view, or were not detected as a person from the cameras angle (hat, sitting down on a table), all items taken after the "tracking loss" are not assigned to your receipt, as the system can´t be sure who you are, as it can´t trace back your path to the entrance where you scanned your app / card..

    If items not accounted for are less then conventional with cashiers (theft, not accounted for, etc) it’ll still be a success for Amazon/Starbucks. They won’t bother designing a way for you to report items not charged. It would cost them more then waiting for people to be honest (or notice) they were undercharged. 🤷‍♂️

  • @SteveRawlins
    @SteveRawlins 2 года назад +1

    I'm not as confident as you are, Uptin, that the technology will eventually "be fixed"; the format itself may just be asking for trouble: small snack items in a coffee shop? C'mon. Is machine vision supposed to have seen you slip those snack bars in your pocket and counted them accurately? I doubt that Kind bars are RFID tagged, so I don't believe any radio-frequency pairing (product-to-you) is happening. Most people are honest; I admire your approach - but I could see the result coming a mile off: Big Corporate is testing these ideas and calculating aggregate sales vs loss. They are hoping to avoid labor-intensive tasks such as reviewing receipts or ringing it up correctly in the first place. The format may never fly nationwide. Also: you shouldn't be eating Ferrerro Rocher for breakfeast. Too rich. Thanks, great video. I Subscribed.

    Just kidding... Under the legislation I am trained under you made all reasonable efforts to pay for the goods you had taken from the store. I wouldn't of been able to prosecute you because you were invited to pay in the chosen method by the retailer. It is not your fault the payment for the goods was 'interrupted' by a technical glitch. It would become a civil matter between you and the retailer if they wanted to obtain full payment.
    But since you were honest enough to go back/contact the retailer, if you made myself aware of it I'd put a note on your file so next time anything like this happened again it would stand you in good stead.
