    While his strategy is clever, it's not really that complicated. At the end of the day this strategy only works if you are more knowledgeable than your opponent. His breadth and depth of knowledge is really what is impressive to me.

      I mean, its just logic. Knowledge = more money. Betting on the big bucks and stuff, switching categories, and all of his tactic would mean absolutely nothing if he didnt spend a year learning trivial stuff.u can have and use all tactic u want, but if u aren't doing good with that trivial stuff, you'll just lose the game.

      I used his strategy for a jeopardy review game in science class, though I modified it so that I start at 600/800 and only go for 800/1000 that early in the game if I'm really that confident with the topic
      I feel like everyone caught on to what I was doing and was trying to emulate it themselves so it was basically fair game all around lol

    I found it strange how you mentioned his year-long, in-depth preparation routine prior to being on Jeopardy, and even his buzzer accuracy, but not how he trained for the buzzer. He has stated that he studied from a book written by a former Jeopardy contestant called “The Art of The Buzzer,” or something like that. What he learned from it was how to anticipate Alex’s speech pattern/ cadence at the end of a question reading to know exactly when to buzz in. He was also very careful to remain still and quick and not lose time by being over-animated or harsh when pressing the button.

      @GiftedContractor 4 года назад +50

      So I originally started this post with the sentence "The interesting thing is you don't need an encyclopedic knowledge of all topics for jeopardy." I read the phrase in your post metaphorically as it was probably meant - an in-depth repository of knowledge of an impossibly large number of things all in one place. Except now after writing the whole explanation as to why that's not necessary, it's now hit me that 'encyclopedic knowledge' is EXACTLY what you need for jeopardy, because encyclopedias actually don't go into a ton of detail. They are good sources for a wide amount of knowledge but don't really get super deep - and that's exactly what you want to be a jeopardy champion.
      I read a bit about it back when Ken Jennings was the god-tier jeopardy player people were discussing, but it turns out an in-depth knowledge of the topics would actually be detrimental. See since jeopardy is ultimately about getting ratings and keeping people watching they want to make the audience feel smart (but not too smart). Notice how when you're sitting watching a game of jeopardy you can usually answer two or three questions on the board? That's by design - they want EVERYONE to have that experience. From all walks of life. at least some of the time. The questions are thus tailored to what 'the average person might know' about that topic - since there's so many topics most people won't know most questions, but since the answers don't require super in-depth knowledge most people will know at least one of the questions. Jennings actually created an algorithm to quiz himself this way as preparation, to cover what 'average people know' about every topic under the sun. This is also hinted at in this video when MatPat mentiond James Holzhauer's method was studying childrens books. That is an AMAZING method of cutting through the nonsense extra technical knowledge to get only at stuff that might actually be quizzed on the show - no one is going to bore a child with the extra stuff, it'll be distilled to simple facts that everyone can understand. The exact kind of facts that'll be asked about on Jeopardy.
      TLDR: Jeopardy's not very deep. Focusing on casting your net of knowledge wide but shallow is the best way to become a god tier jeopardy player

    • @haseulslonglostseal2052

      @@GiftedContractor You absolutely hit the nail on the head. I do scholars bowl/quiz bowl at my high school (which is basically jeopardy but in a team of 4) and the parents marvel at how much everyone on these kinds of teams knows. But it's actually really easy if you cast your net wide, know the "bullet points"/"buzzwords" of topics, and systematically repeat things to get them in your head.

  • @JD-gk7eh
    @JD-gk7eh 3 года назад +51

    Re: Daily Doubles. There seems to be a difficult time separating the dollars of the show from the dollars of real life. The score a player has is not a dollar amount. It is a total of points with a dollar sign in front of it. Why is this? Because you ONLY get that money if you win, meaning that the goal is to win the game, not preserve or maximize one's dollar total. James was very good at understanding that, that money on his podium is not real until the game is over.

  • @kevinolsta9955
    @kevinolsta9955 3 года назад +31

    I think the going quickly and using abbreviations was more about making sure the time clock didn't run out before all of the clues were revealed than it was about trying to overrun his opponents. he would also sometimes cut off Trebek when he was quipping about something in between the clues to make sure to get to the next one as fast as possible.

  • @nickgriffin7710
    @nickgriffin7710 4 года назад +596

    Hey MatPat another reason James was so good was the way he hit the buzzer. Most players would spam the button before you were able to ring it, which would give a small penalty making the buzzer inactive for like half a second. James however, would time it up just right so as soon as you were able to hit the buzzer, he hit it, making him be the one to answer the questions.

    @justinssongsarehis2 2 года назад +20

    Another important aspect you might have looked over when it comes to speed is that I think James wanted to be sure that every question was answered. Jeopardy has strict time limits and even if the contestants don't get through every question or category, they automatically move onto a commercial break, then Double Jeopardy. I've seen nearly entire categories go untouched because of this.
    Though, with James playing there's low likelihood that he's not going to know the answer and he's probably not concerned if there's a $200 question left. It could still be something he kept in mind.

    The real theory should be: how does someone earn one million dollars off of reading children’s books?

    • @k-raemccormack1592
      @k-raemccormack1592 4 года назад +221

      Its actually much easier to learn from children's books as the information in them is written to be interesting, rather than reading an informational book on the same topic written for adults.

    • @An_Average_Idiot
      @An_Average_Idiot 4 года назад +184

      In children's books they tend to explain things in ways that are both memorable and informative. Like in a book for adults, it would explain the phases of the moon in long overly complicated sentences that are hard to remember and comprehend. Meanwhile in a children's book it would cut to the chase and just tell you what and how it happens in much less words and still make it memorable with pictures or fun descriptions.
      Lets think of it like this, are you going to remember a wall of text over-explaining how to tackle someone or would you remember a picture and simplified words better? Books for adults tend to over-explain the smallest of details and constantly leave you wanting instead of flat out saying what they mean. In other words, they use superfluous vocabulary that is inconsequential and does not pertain to the actual situation or subject at hand whatsoever. (They use pointless big words that are pretty much useless and doesn't actually help anyone.)

So they did that a bunch of times and eventually the dog gave up. Then they switched and had the rest of the floor in the kennel electrified and the dog didn't do anything because it knew that if it tried to leave it would get shocked so it just stayed in the kennel taking the shocks

    Back in 2012, I was a contestant. And I had the exact same strategy planned. But then the show started and it all became real very quickly, once I got control of the board, I ended up picking questions based upon the category more than the dollar value. I was up against a younger champion who was very good and very fadt on the button. I almost beat her in Final Jeopardy.
    Unless you have been there, you have no idea what the experience is like. The reason why a typical champion only lasts a few episodes is that it is exhausing, physically, mentslly and emotionally. Five shows are taped each day. The set is incredibly hot. Your brain is going 1000 miles an hour, nothing exists except the game. Every contestant gets a picture with Alex Trebek. It happens during a commercial break. One of the assistant producers had to tap me on the shoulder to tell me that Alex was standing right next to me for our photo, I was so involved, I didn’t see him.
    Every once in a while, someone with icewater in their veins becomes a contestant and goes on a run. They are not, necessarily, more knowledgeable, they just have a sort of detatchment that allows them to remain completely cool and get over the hump to the place where their experience becomes a formidable advantages over the challengers who are, basically, thrown into the deep end to either sink or swim.
    Is the show “rigged”. No, it is not, in my opinion. There are strict rules, the contestants have a lawyer who represents them, and the staff went put of their way to make us all comfortable and, in my opinion, showed no favoritism to anyone.

    • @bunkie2100

      Robert Chavez - I came in second. I “won” $2000. But since contestants have to pay their own expenses, I look at it this way: I won a vacation in LA and Las Vegas (where we went after the taping). Not a bad deal at all.

I will say that you can definitely tell when jeopardy is manipulating the game once someone has been on for awhile. It's not just Ken and James. Sometimes it seems like they make it really easy, like the first games of the college tournament, and then sometimes it's just impossible.
    (I'm also pretty sure categories are chosen based on statistical information about the player, though I doubt that would be provable because it's probably illegal.)

    They just started airing a version of Jeopardy here in the UK, and I am loving every second of it. So much so that I’m actually looking up when ITV are gonna start taking applications for the next series.
    I can really see why this show is so popular in the US.

  • @shawnheatherly

    Now this is surprising. As someone who watched James dominate Jeopardy and was shocked when he lost, I'm pretty interested in that second part.

      Shawn Heatherly I’m inclined to think it’s just clickbait and he’ll actually talk about the infamous case of 20 questions, a 1950s game show that did rig its games and how rigging games now a days is pretty hard to pull off.
