    This is one of the easiest to follow series of tutorials I have found for Fusion 360. I went from no idea to drawing and printing working parts in two days. Thanks for taking the time to produce these, your technique for instructing what is quite a complex subject is brilliant.

    For those of you who were having problems getting the angled plane sketch to connect to the source line, I went into my preferences and fixed it... Click on your name > Preferences > General > Design and select "Auto project edges on reference." There may be another way to do it manually, but I don't know how.

    Hello Arnold. Thank-you for the time you've taken to make these tutorials! This one made my brain hurt a little - I had the same collinear constraint problem that others seem to have had with the angled plane sketch. The only way I could get around it was to add a dimensional constraint of 7.5 between the side and the origin. That centered it up properly but I never did figure out what I was doing wrong.

      Ward, You're welcome.
      I've been thinking of a few methods of achieving the same result and yours is better than a few I've come up with. In fact yours is better than my original way and I'll use your idea when I re-do them.

    • @silvermediastudio
      @silvermediastudio 3 года назад +1

      Ward, as long as you get the result, there is no "wrong." At least not until you get into serious best practices for professional use. There are multiple ways to do a lot of the creations and operations within CAD, the more you explore the better you'll get. Avoid the mental trap of "there's a right and wrong way to do this" because eventually, that "wrong" way will help you do something that you couldn't have done another way. Over time, you will find faster and more efficient ways. Regardless, have fun with it!

    Great job on the videos. I have been learning a lot from your videos. I do have a couple of questions about the part.
    Where did you get the dimension for the length of the slot on the back of the part?
    Where did you get the dimension for the depth of the 7.5mm hole from since it does not have a dimension?
    Also, the 2mm radius should have been called out as 2mm radius 4 places, or each radius should have had a dimension on them.
    I realize I might be a little picky about some of this, but I work on rotating parts for aircraft engines where a single part can up to 300 dimensions, 15 cross sections, & 2 pages of notes.

    • @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
      @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360  4 года назад +2

      That's three more to you Donald.
      It was an oversight on the slot even though I put a centre mark on the end radius. I missed the 2mm radius, sometimes I might put "typ" after the R2 but I'm not sure how that would go down in the aerospace industry. As for the depth of that hole, I was a bit jaded when I got to that part of it, since it not really manufacturable by conventional methods, however it is an interesting part to demonstrate angled extrusions as well as how to read auxiliary drawing views.

    Awesome videos. Thank you much for putting these together. Am at the 14th lesson in 3 days and I cannot believe being 'hooked' on to it. Your teaching style is very articulate.
    Have a few questions:
    1. At time 5:03 - You say '5 mm' is the size of the notch? It is not clear from the drawings.
    2. When pressing on E the extrude view does not automatically change. I found an answer but couldn't find it in the latest software version I downloaded a few days back.
    3. Can I re-orient the part to a different plane? Meaning can I rotate the entire part around a particular axis? How to do that?
    4. In the projects folder where all the parts are stored - the default isometric orientation is different from the ones shown in the drawings.
    5. How to draw a dome/sphere? - I should google search this before asking I suppose :-)
    Apologies for the newbie questions.

    • @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
      @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360  4 года назад

      Rajesh, for Q1 the main orthogonal view shows a dimension for the width of the main body of the part, 15mm. There is one other dimension nested within it, 5mm for the width of one of the sides of the notch. You should assume symmetry in this part and so two times 5 is 10 which you subtract from the overall 15 leaving 5 for the notch.
      Q2 Click on your name in the top right of your screen, Preferences, General - Design, find the one named 'Auto look at sketch' tick it and click Apply below and then OK.

    • @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
      @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360  4 года назад

      Further to Q2, while you're there on that page in Preferences, also tick 'Scale entire sketch at first dimension'.
      Q3 With some model in the main window, find the MODIFY toolbar next to the CREATE toolbar, find the MOVE/COPY tool, click it and the MOVE/COPY dialog will open. Have Bodies selected in the Move Object drop down, click 'Selection' so it turns blue, click on your model, it will turn blue and you will see a complex triad attached to your model. Experiment with this until you work out how to move and how to rotate your model around either of three axes.
      Q4. It could be a quirk of the drawing environment, I'll look into this if its important to you?
      Q5 You've pointed out a missing feature in my 16 part tutorial. I should have included somewhere a revolve-extrude example which is the best way to make a dome or sphere. Thanks, I'll make a plan to correct that.

    • @hugobravo4484
      @hugobravo4484 4 года назад +1

      @@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Regarding Q1, this is still not clear on the sketch. The answer provided refers to the width of the notch which is the main body width minus the two sides. This information IS provided, however the measurement in question is the actual length of the notch, or how far into the part it goes from center to end. I cannot find this information on the sketch either. Is symmetry of depth, width and height always assumed when only 2 of the measurements are given?

    I will preface this with I am a complete beginner with Fusion 360 though a very quick learner. I've run through your tutorial set now 2 times and I can honestly say it has been the most helpful set of tutorials I have used yet. Each time I run through I bump into the same problem and it's probably a very simple fix. At 6:58 you make the vertical lines colinear and they bump right into place, every time I try this I get a "Sketch geometry is over constrained" error and I cannot seem to find the fault, everything looks great but won't snap to the colinear line. Any tips?

    • @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
      @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360  2 года назад +1

      That's very kind _Stevenson_ thanks. That trick with the sketch and lines from a previous feature has proven to be a difficulty for many and its usually due to preference settings. If you downloaded the PDF with the drawings in recent weeks you'll find screenshots of my preference settings for the purpose of being sure your settings are like mine. Pay particular attention to the General > Design page and anything with the word "project" in it. There is also another video on my channel where I've paged through the preferences so that you can stop the player and screen capture the video. ruclips.net/video/UVwJJvQR1fc/видео.html

    One more - @ 7:05 , collinear constraint. Makes the sketch flatten on the object and collinear, rather than make it stay in the 45 deg plane.

    • @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
      @ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360  4 года назад

      Rajesh, the more I think about this the more I suspect there is a mixup with your sketch. The constraint tools will only work within one sketch unless there is some confusion with the initial selection of the sketch plane. This probably doesn't sound very helpful but can I ask you to try stepping through again from the creation of the angled plane (which is a feature) after that, create a new sketch and draw the sketch lines again, be careful not to delete and redraw, especially if you make a mistake. If you do mess up, delete everything back to that base shape and step through the procedure again from the angled plane. If you are getting everything done in the right sequence and it still happens let me know.

      Yes it's true Johnny, one step in the hole tool does the job. However the hole tool has more complex features than any other and I'll never forget trying to simplify it in the class room. Mature age tradesmen brought the discussion to all the complexities they deal with everyday; standards and nomenclature alone are very big topics which I will have to address but just not in a beginners video. Nevertheless the revised version will be quite different.

    6:58 I could not get those two lines colinear. It kept erroring out with overconstrained but I don't see how. I had not put any other dimensions on that sketch yet. On the construction plane that he creates at 45 degrees. If your camera view isn't aligned correctly.
    Click on Constrained Orbit at the bottom.
    Then a circle will appear around the object. Mouse over the circle until you see the small circular arrow. Hold left click and move it left or right and you can rotate the object but stay on the correct plane.
    If you lose the plane and it gets all fucked up. Click on construction to the left. Then the little eye next to the pane to make it visible. Then go to the bottom again and click Look At and click on the new pane.

    Hey Arnold! I've been working through this series and love your teaching style. This model is the only one I got hung up on. When adding the dimension from the origin of the curve to the end of the part it doesn't extend my lines, it moves the part so it's floating/not connected to the 1st sketch. I manually extended the lines back to the end of the part but then when I highlight both edges to use the collinear constraint, nothing happens. I started the sketch over thinking I missed something but got the the same results. I am familiar with autocad so I was able to draw it correctly from the start without having to dim or constrain it but I would like to know what I'm doing wrong. Thanks!

However, when I selected centre of the arc and one of the principal coordinate lines falling in the middle, everything moved to the desired location.
      Are you able to imagine where I could be going wrong?

    Just some minor problems i have...
    Done this part about 15 times, same problem occurs...
    When i start modelling at the "plane of angle" at the angle of 45, it looks great.
    At a given moment it jumped from the 45 angle to being flat at the model (hope you understand what i mean, as english is not my 1st language...)it happens when i put the two lines
    Another problem i have with every video... : when you go from 2 dimensional to extrude, in the video the model turns into 3d mode... not on my fusion 360... it stays flat... i have to turn it manual by hand..
    example: at 6 min.05 when you jump to create sketch, the model tuns... in the video... not on my model...
    So i must do something very wrong... or i am just very stubborn...
    Hope you can give me some advice...

      Rob, both of these problems might be due to settings in Preferences.
      Click on your picture in the top left of the screen, Preferences in the little flyout menu.
      Go to the General > Design page
      Tick the one that says "Auto look at sketch"

      Tick "Auto project edges on reference"
      Tick "Scale entire sketch at first dimension"

      Yes Andy, anything on a right click menu or the 's' key shortcuts dialog or any kind of shortcut can always be found the slow and boring way:- trawl through the menus in the toolbar above. Trap for young players (and us old fuddy duddys if you're grey like me) there is a different main toolbar when you're in sketch mode or feature mode or if you're in one of the other 'Workspaces' such as Surface or Sheet Metal etc. in which case you just need to check to see if you're in sketch mode or feature mode.
      So for the angled plane, look in the CONSTRUCT menu in the toolbar above after you've clicked FINISH SKETCH.

    Good day sir! I really enjoyed watching your tutorials. You have explained very well the basics of the Fusion 360. It helped me a lot to understand different key terms and tricks to sketch different objects. However, I find this part of the tutorial to be tricky when constructing and sketching in an angled plane. I was following your video and I found out that my drawing is upside down. Because of this, I cannot make the sketch in the angled plane to be collinear with the sketch in the previous plane. Instead of making the angle of the plane to be -45deg, I had to make it -135deg to match yours. Only then I can make it collinear after flipping the sketch upside down. I think this is because we have different preferences but I'm not sure. I noticed that your Pan, Zoom, and Orbit is set to SolidWorks and your Default Orbit Type setting is set to Free Orbit. Is this so?

I'll be revising this tutorial sometime soon and I'll try to simplify the sketching procedure. In the meantime please don't waste too much time, if you've come this far you have already learned a lot and there are some neat intermediate tutorials to do when you're ready.

      Hi Joao, I've just done the angled plane myself one more time. I wonder if there is some reason for the difficulty? Have you got the angled plane touching the part along that edge? If its not touching there will be nothing for the line tool to pick up. Another thing you might try is to drop down the 'Create' menu in the tool palette, go down to the second last line 'Project / Include' then click on the first line of the fly-out - Project. Then you should be able to pick that line and it will jump onto the sketch plane. Does this work at all?

      Andreas, a couple of things to try: first, redrawing the sketch, it will change colour when it is extrudable. All the corners have to be watertight, I mean there could be a microscopic gap somewhere. That's always my first thing I check on a problem sketch. Next, try putting a line across the bottom, don't presume it will close the sketch outline by itself (where the sketch touches the base feature of the part) although usually you don't have to.

In other words I would consider my view as showing the negative portion of the xy axis. Is there a way to permanently get these axis to what I see in your videos when starting a sketch? Thanks. There is an Align tool which will allow you to control where things sit as well as the Move tool. A quick search of RUclips will get you some good stuff to go on. I recommend John Hackney's channel for these kinds of questions. - Put things where you want them and give yourself some time to gain confidence about where things will be on creation. ruclips.net/user/hackneyjr

      You're thinking Terry. Usually your very first sketch orients the model to the point of origin. You can roll back your model to the first sketch, go into "edit sketch" and make changes. If your sketch is fixed in place with constraints you may have to delete one or more of them but if you have used dimensions to locate the sketch to the origin you can edit those dimensions and then roll the history timeline forward again. Now you've got me thinking, this would be a nifty video idea.

      Douglas, there are a few people having the same problem. I expect that I'm confusing the program by referencing the side of the part on a different plane. Here's an idea for achieving the result an alternative way. Rather than use a co-linear constraint, draw a construction line from the point of origin of the curve in the sketch to the edge which was used to create the angled plane. That construction line only needs to be constrained 'vertical' and you can use a coincident constraint to move the end of the construction line to the point of origin of the document. Does that help?
