The Beatitudes in Matthew 5

  • The Beatitudes are a radically bold statement of Jesus’ intent to establish the kingdom of heaven on earth, which will bring true peace and freedom for all who dare to follow him as his disciples. It is through those disciples that his kingdom will bring blessing to all of the peoples of the earth.
The Beatitudes serve as a sort of preamble to the Sermon on the Mount, but they are an even more memorable treasure for humanity. The Beatitudes give a succinct statement of the ethos of the kingdom of heaven that Jesus has announced and summarize the principles of kingdom life that he will articulate in the Sermon that follows. We find in them an abstract of Jesus’ history-altering intention for establishing the kingdom of heaven as well as a clue to Matthew’s organization of his Gospel.
Eight primary statements of blessing make up the Beatitudes, with the ninth statement of blessing (5:11-12) being an extension and personalization of the eighth beatitude for Jesus’ disciples who experience persecution:
    1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
    2. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
    3. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
    4. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
    5. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
    6. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
    7. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
    8. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus elaborates in his follow-up statement-"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me…”-looking down the long corridor of time until the kingdom is established on earth in its final form and offers hope during those times when it seems doubtful that his kingdom will ever arrive. It may not look like it from a religious, economic, or social perspective, but the kingdom is theirs nonetheless-and in this they will truly rejoice.

Our Lord delivered me from a 30 year crack cocaine addiction systematically over a period 9 years (in a round and round process of; sin, consequence, guilt, confession, forgiveness)
And unless the modification process is activated in her automatically, this is the only other alternative to bring about her sanctification!
Give it time....... God was able break David and Paul and myself (and if she's really His lamb) Carlis next! 🙏😣

What a great introduction to what the kingdom of God and creation were intended to be. Because of Adams sin and consequent separation humanity has become inhuman without Him. The beatitudes are what our inner soul desires and without Christ in us to make that change we will never achieve. As a young child I marveled at creation and my greatest joy was always being outside to enjoy it. As I studied it’s beauty and its purpose, the only evil I saw was the evil of mankind. We are the problem, the conundrum of creation. Jesus is the only solution and I am forever grateful Jesus pursued me and saved me. He is the only pure joy and King of my life. Thankyou for the power of your testimony and truth of His gospel.

A Journey to the Top of Mt. Zion
When I focus on Zion, at first my glasses are dark; in the distance it seems dim
He opened His mouth and began to speak blessings; I learn to be a beggar from every breath of my mouth, convicted of my sins
Desiring to achieve and reach up to Zion, the first step I took, He heard my cry
My cries turned to wailing, wailing to great anguish, but I heard Him say, “Draw Near”, and I was comforted, now on the second step I stood, with wind beneath my wings I feel I can fly
A 3rd step I took, but really there have been many in between; I humbly bow to my King, and now I’m beginning to be carried, inheriting the earth
Bold to tell of His Truth, my feet start to move, but sorrow felt for those below me, will they stay the course, will they hear my joy that draws me closer in this new birth
Encouragement came from those in front of me, so I encourage and pray for those behind me
Heaven His throne and earth His footstool, as I draw near I begin to see more clearly, the flesh in which I flee
Fatigue of this journey I’m getting hungry and thirsty, He set a table of righteousness before me and a fountain of living water for my thirst
I feast on His bread, and fully drink of His water; the 4th step becomes excitement, with great joy and satisfaction to my spirit and soul at first
The 5th step or more like a thousand steps from plateau to plateau, now seeking to be filled with His love and compassion I continue to go
Once again I’m filled with His mercy, receiving mercy for me, I know
The 6th step I start casting off all that is unclean, finding filth I’ve never seen, my heart is broken, and I think of how unsearchable are all the riches of my Lord, I look and see the purity of His Kingdom and all His glory
If I can reach to the top of Zion I will be His son, seeking peace to find rest, now at the 7th step my feet no longer touching the ground, going all the way, if in Him I be found, telling my story
I’ve now reached a new level, persecuted and suffering tribulation I feel His Joy, because I’m in Him, and every assault He has taken for me, for He is my righteous armor, and for Him I do strive. This 8th step is by full faith and no fear of this world, but to fear God I will respond
The final step is true death, for you will be hated by this world, but it’s not you they hate, but the Son of God, Jesus Christ, that you put on
This 9th step is where one knows intimately the meaning of denying ones flesh and the baptism of a worldly death, raised as a new man in newness of life One day to meet the Bridegroom, dressed in white, His wife
Blessed, I’m poor and begging for His spirit
Connecting to His kingdom, He hears it
Blessed, mourning over my sins I grieve
His comforter with joy I soon received
Blessed, meek and humble, but in spirit and truth I’m bold
    Inheriting the earth I’m told
Blessed, I’m thirsty and starving for His righteousness
Filled and fully satisfied with my Christ Jesus
Blessed, having mercy and compassion for all
His mercy on me begins to fall
Blessed, having a pure and clean heart to grow
Fixing my gaze upon Him, I now know
Blessed, pursuing the Prince of Peace
A child of God, a peacemaker, I will not cease
Blessed, persecuted for His righteousness in me
The Kingdom of Heaven, His face I can see
My persecution makes me exceedingly glad
Making it to the top of the mountain, just like the prophets had
    For great is my reward
In heaven are all my treasures stored
Mat 5:1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
    The Beatitudes
Mat 5:2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Mat 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Mat 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Mat 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Mat 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Mat @ Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat @ Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Mat @ Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Psa 119:142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.
Psa 119:143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.
Psa 119:144 The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live.
Psa 119:145 KOPH. I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O LORD: I will keep thy statutes.
Psa 119:146 I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies.

well said Christian. a strong man starts as a frail vulnerable baby, and a strong man will if blessed exit life at an old age frail and vulnerable. what should a strong society of humans do the frail and vulnerable. the meek shall inherit the earth. for when we are at our strongest which can only happen with the brightest light of the heavens, protect that which is frail and vulnerable. we take turns at it. i am grateful for the USA the land i grew up in, fellow members took care of me when i was down, and i tried my best to help those that need help. we all need help at times. thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. thank you

The first time I ever heard of Matheww 5:5 was in a Communist Christianity class last semester. "0:46 Who really wants to be poor, to mourn, to be weak?" was exactly the definition that we learned. Jesus was talking to a lot of villagers ready and agitated go to war with the awful Roman empire that taking over everything. He was telling them to wait and bide their time, not to actually be weak. He did not like rich people as they put profit over people, and would not change their paths or give up their wealth to do so.

It is now believed by some great thinkers that the term ‘Meek’ is not a really good translation as it appears to teach us to be mild and tame….but it should be more closely translated as…’One Whom has great capacity to deal harm to others….but choose to Sheath their Swords’. If we look at it as those Powerful men and women, whom choose peace and diplomacy over war and division….will inherit the earth. Not so much that we should be mild and dull.

Meek or: "Having a sword and knowing how to use it, but to keep it sheathed."Because Jesus had said, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'"
Was it for self protection which Jesus later changed his mind about, or was it because Jesus needed the persecutors to see him as a threat? It is hard to tell. Probably the latter.

To support the video's exposition of Mat5, I share the following.
Mat5:3-16 revealed so much, and, tragically, the Christian world has not given it due emphasis.
Mat5:12 reveals the pathway to heavenly rewards. Nowhere in the New Testament exists such a comprehensive list (narrated in Mat5:3-11) and directly connects them to eternal rewards. The basis of these rewards in Jesus' words is grounded in suffering persecutions as one pattern their life after Mat5:3-11 that is low in social power as social pariahs of the world.
These rewards are very significant as Jesus placed them on the same standing as the prophets of God.
Mat5:13-16 revealed that such a person (that lives in the order of Mat5:3-11) qualifies as being the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Jesus is essentially saying you will become like me, conform to my image. This claim is apparent because Jesus later revealed Himself as the Light of the world in John8:12.
This knowledge defines the amorphous desires professed by Christians that desire to be like Jesus.
And Lastly, Jesus defined good works in Mat5:16. This good work is a source of glory for Father God. Suffering, according to Mat5:3-11, is the very definition of Good works according to God's yardstick.
Missing the above knowledge has been causing fruitless pursuits of other lesser forms of good works. It is also a source of many versions of what it means to be transformed into Christ's likeness.
It is a tragedy not knowing and living the above truths as a Christian.
To close this reflection, what kind of Christian would one be, if that Christian does not desire, value or ignorant of what it means to be salt of the earth and light of the world?

Very well done, but, Jesus taught "the Kingdom (of God) is at hand", in fact his entire ministry pointed at the kingdom of God/heaven, NOT as a place you go when you die, but to be accessible NOW, with the assistance of the Holy Spirit.
When one adopts the beatitudes, he/she finds themselves in the Holy of Holy with their joint heir and High Priest, Jesus Yeshua. In those moments they are kingdom-dwellers. Sadly we work our way back out again, but that's the dynamic essentially.

Revelation 1:14 and Matthew 5:36 ( oaths, hair being white like wool, white as snow, thou can't make one hair white)Speaking about Jesus here being white is about his oath under God because God has Dominion. It's not about the color of his hair like a lot of people use systematic theology for. If this is correct please respond?
    Revelation 1:14, KJV: His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
Matthew 5:36, KJV: Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

Blessed are those with peaceful hearts for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are you when you hunger and thirst for goodness and for contact with the Father within you, because then you will surely be filled up a hundred times over.
Blessed are you when you are attacked and robbed because you will see God-in-action when you stand still in perfect trust and see deliverance taking place.
Blessed are you when you are caught up in conflict, yet you can still care about your fellow man and be the peace maker. You carry the Love in your heart which is of the Father and you are truly a child of the Father.
Blessed are you when you have been deeply wronged by another yet can forgive and can show mercy, abstaining from seeking justice or the means to persecute him. You put yourself directly in harmony with the Love which is God-active-within you and even so will you be spared in times of trouble.
Most blessed of all are the pure in heart, for such as these have rid themselves of all anger, hatred, vindictiveness, unkindness, envy, hardness of heart and stand before the world as Love-made-visible. They will know the Reality of God and they will know the Reality is the Father within them.
