  • For the United States, World War II started on December 7th, 1941 with a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. What many don't realize that the Japanese launched simultaneous attacks around the Pacific in near unison.
    The Philippines, a territory of the United States since 1898, were under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. He was tasked with preparing the islands should Japan attack. As much as he did, Japanese forces quickly overran defenses and US and Filipino armies retreated to the Bataan Peninsula.
    Here, the combined might of the US and Filipino armies held off the Imperial forces of Japan until April 1942. Once General King surrendered, those that remained alive were forced to march more than 100km in what is known as the Bataan Death March.
    My Great Uncle was stationed here prior to World War II and survived the march. Join me in this special QiRanger Adventure as Jo and I travel to Bataan. We start off at Mariveles, the sight of the first of two 00km Death March markers and make our way through the peninsula all the way to Tarlac and Camp O'Donnell.

    In the 1990's I was a US Army Captain and paratrooper and doctor just returned from deployment. I went into the ER exam room to see a new patient, a veteran, and he asked me about my deployment and I told him. Then I asked him where he served he replied Bataan and Corregidor then he was a POW. I was stunned and sat there in awe. Nothing I had ever done in the military before or after compared to what he endured. We kept in touch until I moved a few years later. He was very humble and I'll never forget him as he never asked for any appreciation. He hated the Japanese though..

    • @s.t.santos5928
      @s.t.santos5928 Год назад +2

      He had every reason to hate the Japanese. I once had an American boss in Saudi Arabia way back in the 1980s. He was a WW2 vet. He said that every time he saw a Japanese national, he couldn't help but relive Japan's brutality in that war. His face would turn red and his eyes, fierce. I guess he's dead by now. He most likely never recovered from that PTSD.

    Nice video!
    I had the opportunity to meet a number of Filipino-American veterans here in Los Angeles a few years ago - among them, many survivors of the march. They still meet periodically to remember and pass on the story. I was advising a young Filipino American filmmaker, and the vets were so incredibly grateful to see the young generation taking the time to learn about all they went through. It was a memorable day.

    Looking at the ratios of Filipino to American soldiers, it is suffice to say that it was the Filipinos who fought so bravely in the defense of the Nation, please give to them the credit they deserve.

      Thank u for the recognition as my grandfather has fought bravely side by side with the Americans during WWll. He was invited to migrate to the US in the late 80's but the dream was never realized until his death in 2009 nevertheless we received compensation from US government just in time before he died. As Filipinos we have huge respect for Americans. We owed our freedom from your people. We stood beside you in the quest of freedom, democracy and for a world free from aggression. God bless the United States of America and the Philippines.

    I was born in Mariveles Bataan in Balon Anito St. but grew up in Manila, every summer me and my family spent some time in Mariveles with my grandmother who lived in Mariveles. She passed away just a year ago, but she had some unbelievable stories during the war. she said that during the march she was trailing the soldiers beside the road and throwing bread and water, or ice water with the civilians who were watching the soldiers.

    Thanks for the video. I went to Bataan about 20 years ago with a vague idea of walking my own uncle’s root of the death march. It didn’t take me long to understand that it was no easy task in April weather. I ended up taking the bus for most of the way. My uncle, Louis Read, eventually was transferred to the home islands on one of the hell ships and finished out the war mining lead in Sendai. He died in 2011. Thanks again for your video. There is a mass grave which was uncovered during building of the Naval Radio Transmitter Facility Capas Tarlac which is not the actual site of the shrine you visited. The old US NRTF base after closing was opened for displaced Filipino’s after Mt. Pinatubo erupted and is now wall to wall squatters and the only thing left recognizable from the base is the small guard shack at the entrance. The shrine came after.I wanted to visit the actual grave site but feared for my safety. Nice video, thanks.
